What an honor it is to have John Romero on this channel! As the Legendary Game Developer and Co-Founder of id Software, John Romero shares the history of the game industry and the behind-the-scenes of DOOM, Quake, Commander Keen. John's autobiography DOOM Guy: Life in First Person is coming out today! Check out this interview -- and check out John's book! And leave a comment below to let me know what you think.
Amazin interview and video, thank you so much for interviewing with such a gaming legend! John Romero and John Carmack are my heroes from the 90's. I'm 40 years old and i grew up with Doom and Quake games. John Romero and John Carmack were my heroes back in those days when i was a kind and then a teenager, they are still my heroes!
John Romero is so cool. I used to draw scenes from Doom in class during early elementary school. Not having access to the game myself, I’d play it on my neighbors dad’s work laptop, whenever he was down.
Great interview! Those early eras of gaming were such a unique time. It's cool how a small group of very talented guys determined the direction of fps gaming for decades. Half life was the title that took me on my game dev journey and owed lot of that modding community ethos to the quake days and produced many amazing mods that themselves changed the face fps. There's a river of inspiration and creativity energy that flowed through the titles and people from Romero's era. It's incredible how impactful it was for so many people.
John is always the most interesting game developer to listen to. Too bad he betrayed the moment, he said sometime ago in a stream that "we are long past the time of making our own engine". Like bro, I'm still making my game in C. You are wrong on that, John!
Interesting! Yeah I’ve thought a lot about the monopoly on game engines now. There’s only a handful commercial ones and most are great. But doesn’t mean there’s not room to develop new tech from scratch and try to introduce your own spin on things. Thanks for sharing!
As much as John Romero's reputation has been distorted trough the years, i still respect him as a game designer and programmer alongside Carmack, we should give both the respect that they need
@@buriedbones-nh9xr he does talk about that in the book that it was more perceived that he was the big ego from id because he would do all these interviews, the long hair etc. whether that’s true or he just outgrew all that, who knows. But yeah his and Carmack’s contributions were huge, modding Doom and Quake was how I got my first job in the game industry, I was always inspired by those guys all those years ago. I’d love to get John back on for another, his waiting for the right time when there’s perhaps a few new directions we could take the conversation
Thanks big eye guy yeah I really enjoyed the interview definitely want to have him back. And removed music from upcoming videos so won’t be an issue in the future. Thanks for your input!
I bought ‘Doomguy’. And in all honestey. It reads like a dream. I read like 3-4 pages everyday. Because I don’t want it to be over. Id Software is such an important peace of history, especially for gamers and people alike. Read it !
@yeah, I’m at the Ion Storm part now. (Spoiler). Never knew about the ‘bitch’ add. I never knew John wasn’t fond about it. And the backlash ooh man. Amazing guy, he should write more books!
I just finished it - masters of doom Carmack, Romero a lot of people have said there’s a lot of things that aren’t completely factually accurate. It’s still a great read, I’ve read it a few times. I loved Romeros book. And it goes into a lot of detail on things that MOD just glazed over. I’d read both but doom guy is definitely a great read!
@@AllanMcKay i enjoyed MOD too, sounds like this one will be a great read being more direct by comparison from romero. dont think its out here in australia til sept 21 , but will grab a copy for sure!
@@palmvegas7878 awesome yeah great read and I’d recommend both, wish there were more books like this detailing people’s production experiences on such iconic games. Let me know what you think when it comes out back home!
@@AllanMcKay indeed. id also like to see some good new documentary style treatments of it. theres been a few lately in the game dev/it startup world and doom story would be a great story telling. indie game docco the dropout (theranos) super pumped (uber) billion dollar code (google earth story) etc etc
Any idea if Romero's book is coming really globally? I want to buy it but I'm from a Spanish speaking country. I guess I can get it in my Kindle but I wanted the physical stuff. I don't care if it's in English.
@@AllanMcKay that would be so cool. I don't mind reading in English, but considering how important this book and Romero itself is to the world of gaming I'm sure translations should be coming out in the future. It sucks that sometimes this happens with these kinds of works.
id games got less fun as they bled the rest of the team, I think 90% is an overstatement. I think Romero's game design deserves a lot of credit for early id games' success.

John romero seems like such a cool down to earth guy.
I've bought both Masters of Doom and Doom Guy, and i'll read them sometime in the future. I wish John Carmack also writes a book too.
Loved this interview!❤
