February 19, 1987 in class with Mr. Patton, I had 3 bucks and 2 quarters in my pocket, we learned this and this.... lol some of us probably did learn that stuff but forgot. they spend maybe a day or a week teaching us stuff that we never use again for the rest of our lives. Just like Joe Rogan here running into these terms maybe 40+ years after hearing something like that, if at all.

      One of my favourite nerd bits was when he used a phrase something like "popping a few off the stack" when he caught himself going off on a tangent. Programmer lingo that there was almost zero chance of Joe knowing the literal meaning of. But the meaning in the context of how he used it was perfectly clear.

      If you look at his QuakeCon talks, he was similar there as well. I always found it fascinating to listen to. I never found him to be condescending either, he really tries to explain what he's talking about.

      Good news doesn't sell well, but there's actually a lot of it. Extreme poverty is on track to be virtually gone by 2030, and electric cars will likely replace gas cars by 2050 for example.

    John Carmack delivers talks on programming for 3 hour straight talk standing still. He thinks so clearly the words just flows without rephrasing or using filler words. Its hard to stop watching his 3 hour video presentations once it starts playing. Love you John. You are an very inspiring, not just for your mastery over computer science and programming but for the things you supported like donating to the free software foundation, etc.

Few modern games have made any real technical improvement on FPS competitive gameplay in the last 20 years. Carmack's games are simultaneously the godfather of FPS and the greatest yet made.

    Carmack is a legend. Can't believe the dude isn't even 50. Created Wolfenstein at like 20. Doom inspired all FPSes after in single and in multiplayer. Quake was amazing. All experienced before I was a teenager in early 2000s. Great guy and a nerds nerd.

      Poppe Monk I stopped watching that episode about 30 minutes in because Neil was ranting about intro level physical chemistry and geology like he was blowing Joe and the listener’s minds. It can’t across very condescending at a point and Neil was really jerking himself off to the virtues of science. The dude is really just an Internet personality, a meme and a decent voice actor (cosmos Netflix special). He doesn’t touch Carmack in terms of obvious intelligence. I be Neil probably struggles with changing the input on his television or downloading apps on his phone.

      He's really good at maintaining a conversation based around a core idea that he's familiar with that he can use as a guide or touchstone. When in doubt he can return to the original idea and use it to renew the conversation or steer it in a new direction while staying on topic.

As awesome as John is, I sometimes wonder how much they abuse his creations. John creates stuff because he loves it, his masters care about the money and not the product, let alone the people.

      Being able to channel your strengths in a way that overshadows your weaknesses is the mark of a true leader. John Carmack pioneered modern gaming as far as technical workings is concerned, but more than that he applied his leadership skills to his craft. That let him create truly amazing experiences despite the limitations of the technology at his fingertips. The technology became a medium for him and not simply a means to an end.

      Carmack is a genius and he seems to have a really hard time to explain to people that aren't having at least a strong fundamental understanding of the subject at hand. There's a video on YT where he tries to explain VR to kids and the little ones are just getting blasted with terminology they can't put into any context. I love his clear, precise thinking though.

      This is exactly what gaming is now. You can’t really modify any of the games that come out these days besides a handful all because the companies don’t want their assets to be used to make something better that they can’t then profit off of. It’s why things like map development in the first person shooter genre has almost entirely disappeared because of companies like Activision and EA closing those avenues off. It’s fucking bullshit

I stopped buying games. these new generations don't understand how fucking GREAT we had it back in the day. remember all of the different maps and weapons on COD1? fighting Shrek with the Shrek theme on Killing Floor 1? it's pretty bad nowadays and the games are made to make max profit for low effort. :( I wish EA would die.

    When John Carmack was in middle school, he used his chemistry lab to create thermite to burn his way into the computer lab to steal a computer.

    John Carmack is programming Jesus.
    The engines he worked on are the best in the business.
    Doom 3 is still impressive to this day.
    (He also managed to get an open world game running at 60fps on 2005 console hardware)

      @@liquidzen906 The way shadows and lights work is impressive. It's outdated, but the lighting looks more appealing than many games I see on the market now.
      The fact that something this good came out in 2004 is incredible.
      I literally just finished playing the original on PC and BFG edition on Nintendo switch. It looks really good.
      There's also a lot of atmosphere and little details.
      The audio logs and GUI surfaces really helped with immersion.

      It is still impressive because all the rendering and lighting/shader effects can scale well with todays tec. Not many games have such good effects to begin with so they dont age well.
      I replay old games all the time and doom 3 is one of the games that looks great, many other games from the same time are not even playable without mods that swap out the renderer's for newer ones.

      @@abeidiot Today Id software isn't really living up to what it was at Carmack time, thanks to Bethesda. Just look what they did with the "every game engine getting replaced will be open-sourced", someone at Bethesda said "hum no, that's not the optimal way to make money on the very short term, stop doing that already".
      I think most of the reason Carmack left Id Soft for Occulus was that kind of big company bs.

    For a senior project in high school, my group of friends re-did Quake as our campus with the teachers as the mobs. Changed the armor to letter-mans jackets and the nails to pencils, good times. It went over well but I feel it wouldn't these days. We had the teacher that everyone hated the most as the Shambler.

      @Phil Ill I agree that such terms get thrown about a lot, but there's a real case for this guy being one of the smartest people alive. He isn't some theoretical mastermind like someone like Roger Penrose, and he doesn't exactly invent new theories for anything. But if you simply look at the amount and depth of top-quality work this guy puts out, it's actually insane. He is an absolute master enginner, in the sense that he applies everything that's known and actually makes it work in practice. He's also well versed in a ton of subjects, and has a truely inspiring no-nonsense workethic and general approach to innovation. If you want to look for someone who knows about and developed high-efficiency computing in real world applications, this is your guy.

      @dubnstuf They always underestimate the amount of players and fix it within the first day, but the problems have always been minor on expansion releases, this release will take weeks to balance out. Ive read estimates that 24 million people tried to play on launch.
