Nicola Sturgeon regrets not locking down Scotland earlier, defends her record to UK Covid Inquiry

- Nicola Sturgeon has said that regrets over some of the decisions she took during the pandemic will be with her as long as she lives - as she defended her government's record to the UK Covid inquiry.

She admitted there was a "large part" of her who wished she hadn't been Scotland's First Minister during the pandemic - but said it was up to others to judge how well she'd done.
Most of today's questions focused on the Scottish government's strategy and decision making - including the use of Whatsapp messages.

I have a friend who's husband had terminal cancer, his one pleasure was being taken to a local beach and parking so he could watch the sea and breath the ozone... when lockdown began, his wife took him to the beach and they were turned away by the police who told them they couldn't park ...

I don't think Nicola Sturgeon comes out of this spotless, but we need to show some balance in our comments. Compare her answers to Johnson, Hancock, Gove or even Sunak's - no use of 'recall' / 'recollection', no evasiveness in her answers. She gave proper answers and did not play games with the QCs. I believe the display of remorse from her as well - not because she cried but the conviction in her voice in regretting being a leader during a pandemic and in trying to do her best throughout.
It's clear that out of this enquiry a gold standard for information-keeping on personal phones and Whatsapp will be laid out, and that near enough everyone in power is in deficit on that issue.
What --- lock down earlier and for longer, when it does not work and would have cost even more.

I don't get it, why is she being treated like Borris? Yes, she was unclear and broke the trust, and she shouldn't have deleted WhatsApp. But there was no outright lying and parties while everyone was on lockdown. It's nowhere near the same.

Her government were also using some decisions for political gain at a time of crisis.

But you just saw her actually lie. She told the journalist everything would be available for looking at, knowing that she'd actually already deleted them. The problem with the deletion is that she can say they weren't relevant but how do we know? That's why everything should be kept and the enquiry decides what's relevant. She knew that. But deleted things anyway.

The reason England has not got the goodies you mention is because if England had the highest budget deficit in Europe (as Scotland has) there would be dire consequences. But Scotland with it's population half that of London and with an economy even smaller can hide under the skirt of the UK and the pound.Which is why the SNP were so keen to keep the pound.
The Scots receive £126 per person from the UK government for every £100 that the English receive.

Under Section 148 (2) (a) it is an offence for a person to destroy or otherwise dispose of, conceal, block or (where relevant) falsify all or part of the information, document, equipment or material. Section 148 (2) (b) makes to cause or permit the actions set pout in the previous subsection. Whatsapp messages are official records. The test is met. I believe Ms Sturgeon has committed a crime.
