a couple of the women i was working with back in the day bought a CRV, and a RAV four. there was almost no difference in the practicality, and both vehicles did over 350,000 miles, almost trouble free. Created A lot of brand loyalty, sold several other people by example. Not many makers could say that now.

Best car I've owned. I went from a very unreliable SEAT to a 99 build CRV. Owned it for 10 years from new. Not one issue, well except for a faulty thermostat at 188000klms. A very easy replacement normally. The issue with the CRV was we got the the old thermostat and the new one mixed up the old one was that clean. Based on this incident my mechanic father sold his Toyota and bought Honda's from then on, only just swapping over to KIA as Honda has lost its mojo so he says. I've owned 2 CRVs with the later version being less quirky and interesting even with the table in the boot. I currently own a Japanese build Mitsubishi Outlander Diesel which is one of the better SUVs off road, being able to lock 4wd in is a real bonus and with a 2000kg towing ability makes it very useful. You could call me an early SUV adopter. 23 years and counting. They suit my needs perfectly.

What a surviver of a CRV. Previous owner clearly cared for it.
Most mk1s in my area have become dog/tip/field cars and general neglected and rust ridden around the sills and arches.
Crvs seem to be a bit more 'surprise and delight' feature rich compared to the equivalent Rav4.

I had one of these back in 2018, bought for £400 but it was in need of some work and high mileage but nevertheless it was 100% reliable.
Mine was a 5 speed manual with the gear change on the floor, I think the column lever was on the automatics like that one is.
    Great cars, and very durable.
It’s suprising that late 90’s cars have become “of interest” in recent times, when just 5 years ago they were cheap cars that were being used abused and thrown away.
It’s nice to see one in such good condition though, and credit to its former keepers for keeping up the care and attention in it.
Great vid once again Matt, thanks.

one major flaw Matt, the crv is not a 4x4 !
it's front wheel drive with a fluid clutch that only ever kicks in when front wheel slip is detected.
I had the same year model in manual.
a very practical and cheap at the time vehicle. I paid £650 for mine with over 142k on the clock.
As said ultea reliable and cheap to run however NO match off road to a Freelander.

Matt, back in 1998 I was looking for a car with some off-road capabilities because I was planning to take my family on a big Aussie road trip. I considered the CR-V, the Toyota RAV-4, the Kia Sportage, and eventually I bought a Suzuki Grand Vitara five door, which had selectable four wheel drive with low range, and was built on a ladder frame chassis. It was an excellent car, but as it turned out any of the others I considered would have handled the trip. What they wouldn't have handled was some of the real off-road work that later on the Suzuki handled no problem!

Somewhere on UA-cam the other day someone said "when did you last see one of these?" Strangely, here in Sussex, I seem to see several every day (not the same ones!) and they are mostly in excellent condition. Their owners tend to annoy me by not putting the spare wheel covers on straight.

Best car I've ever had. Been running a 1997 JDM C-RV ( auto, satnav, aircon, CD player AND cassette deck ! ) for 12 years and can't imagine letting it go. It's a comfortable, reliable workhorse with that sweet B20B engine. Sweet but a bit thirsty. Well done for featuring a real classic.

I wish I had asked to purchase my previous neighbour's MK1 CRV. It may have required a bit of tidying up though. My dad has the 2010 CRV with the diesel engine and that is a excellent car and its been a great vehicle and it has been off road a few times. Off road wise it doesn't get stuck much in wet conditions and has actually put Land Rover's to shame especially Land Rover's with silly low profile tyres. His car is now getting a bit clunky on the suspension, gear gator has started to wear and the headlight fade has begun which I hope to cure with a headlight restore kit. All CRV owners will tell you that the driving position is perfectly aligned as that is how Honda wanted the formula to be.

  • @MrCHrisfj
    @MrCHrisfj Рік тому

My Dad had one from 99-04. Very comfy for long distance driving and you can walk from the front seats to the back with the picnic table stowed so keeping yourself dry in wet weather! 😃
About the only downside to the automatic gearbox and 2.0l petrol engine combination was the terrible fuel economy, typically 30mpg on a long run but most of the time low 20's.... I can't remember the tank size but I think the range was about 250 miles, maybe 300 at a stretch. I used to have a 2.0LS Accord of the same generation and could get 35-40mpg on a long run keeping up with the traffic and never less than 30mpg in around town driving.
If you want a recommendation of a more modern Honda to test as a comparison I can recommend the MK2 HR-V, based on the Jazz it is a big improvement especially with the 1.6L diesel. About the only downside is the lack of rear visibility... But nowadays 'they all do that sir' 😉

Interesting to compare the Mk1 with whatever Mark would have been on sale in 2015 when we got ours (4WD 1.6 diesel). I prefer the dashboard gear lever (like the Civic) on ours to the column gearchange of this one. Ours is a nice car to drive, with one proviso: the diesel engine has bugger-all torque at low revs (I'm used to my Peugeot 306 1.6 HDi) so you have to change down a *lot* further when turning into a side road, going round a roundabout or climbing a slight hill - which rather spoils the big advantage of a diesel :-( As long as you humour the gearbox, it has tremendous acceleration. Even when I know about this quirk and make allowances for it, I *still* find it catches me out occasionally and the engine fails to pull in a gear and at an engine and road speed where my Pug would pull very easily.

I liked those back when they were new and didn’t appeal to everyone. They had a certain charm that truly set the apart from regular cars. They were not just glorified tall cars, they looked like a miniature off roader, similar to competitors like the Freelander, Vitara, and Rav4 (never liked the Rav4, probably the ugliest in its class). Unfortunately that charm wasn’t passed onto its successors; with every new generation the CRV has become more generic to the point is just another crossover that only sells because is a Honda. Take the badge off and no one will even look at it!

It does have issues like driver side wiring harness is broken so window doesn't roll down, locks don't work, and speaker is broken, but that's fine I can get that fixed. It's long overdue for SUV's to go back to their roots. Those were very capable family cars if one had a caravan, with the right tyres one often did not need assistance to get in or out of a farmers field that he turned into a campsite in the summer. That was the problem of having a proper off roader and camping, the hours spent towing other camper's in and out the field in a then normal summer.

These were pretty interesting vehicles at launch and I think if manufacturers would have stayed making just one or two SUV's in their range and not binned off hatches, saloons, estates , they wouldn't be viewed with the contempt they are by people who prefer more conventional vehicles.
The CRV had the right idea as did the Freelander, decent to drive, comfortable, extra ground clearance and 4WD, unlike todays jacked up 2WD SUV blobs that offer less economy, less storage space and poorer handling than the standard cars they're platformed from.
The one that started it all off for me though was the Cherokee XJ , only available in UK from 1993 but sold in USA a decade earlier. Jeep could go back even further to the 60's Grand Waggoner but that wasn't sold in UK.

You're right about current SUV's being a saloon on stilts. If you want something to lug all your stuff about, get an estate - better mpg and better handling. However, my son's friend has a massive St Bernard dog, and the only vehicle which will accomodate this dog comfortably is an Audi Q7. So it's a case of horses for courses really.

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc Рік тому

Thats what stuff like minvans are made for. Lots of them out there with better interior space than a q7, whilst still being lower and more economical. If you want markedly more space inside than a q7, thats what for example VW Caravelles are made for. Need even more space than that? There are Transit vans made these days with full interior that drive just about as well and comfortably as a normal car.
As you can see, there are tons of choices that dont necessitate putting the car on stilts, and fitting it with large tires that rob space from the interior, when most of them will never go offroad. A van will do well on enough on anything that might be reasonably called a road, the large wheels and tires of cars these days are to mask how large and slab sided they are compared to older cars. The Long wheel base, 8 feet roof height Transit I use to drive uses smaller tires than a modern Golf! And it works just fine.
SUVs are a fashion choice for most people, thats all there is to it. Perhaps inclding your sons friend as well, since, from your comment, it seems he hadnt even considered anything but an SUV, or he would have realised that its far from the only vehicle capable of hauling his dog, any van offers more space in the same size bodyshell?
Dont get me started on pick up trucks.... A Van will do just about everything most people use their pick ups for, and better...

As a footnote, 1990s Japanese cars, still feel very modern and fresh when you hop inside. In my opinion, Euros, American, and Australian cars from the 90s look and smell dated when you hop inside them these days.

I love hearing you speak, but see your lips not moving through the window. Always surprises me how a lot of the cars you review, which at the time were kind of mundane, but now rare as hens teeth kept in such remarkable condition. Mind boggling!

Suprised to see Romford on the dealer plates considering being "OO" on the end signifies Birmingham registered with "O" being the middle letter

I wouldn't of Minded a CRV for Load space as always picking up big Items like Arcade Machines but Didnt want 2.0L Drinking Fuel doing 10k yearly. HRV Which i prefer Styling Of had Done the Job, Modified with 1.5L Lean Burn Civic Engine its now pefect with near Diesel Economy Cheaper Tax and Reliable

Were the Jeep Cherokee and Ford Explorer not exported to the UK? I really don't know, so I'm asking. If not, then, yeah, you can be forgiven for thinking that the Honda CRV was one of the first SUVs (but it's actually much more like what became known as a crossover).

Back then each crossover offering had something a little different whether in purpose or design. Today it's just cookie cutter. That's what makes this CR-V and it's contemporaries of the time cool and not faux.

The spare wheel on the tailgate of early SUVs often had another reason. Many SUVs of this time were based on a front-wheel drive platform. Adding a driven rear axle meant there was no space at the back to stow the spare wheel under the trunk. In the trunk, the spare wheel would have taken up too much space and reduced it considerably. So they took up the off-roaders' solution and mounted the spare wheel at the rear.

Good point, they wouldnt have had space with the rear diff added
