Hey Scotty, what happened to your G Wagon?
I learned in school that the drums are self energized and are better in stoping is that true?
Just discovered your outstanding original channel yesterday and now I'm overjoyed to find out you have another channel too! Great educational and interesting content for me to watch :-) Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us! :-)
“Just ignore the dent. That’s not the car’s fault!”
True Scotty wisdom. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I used to say that, that dent saved me $1,000 dollars. I bought a good car for $1,000 dollars cheaper than it was worth due to that dent.
Unless it's a PT Cruiser, i'm fine with the dent being on that car (and only that car).
Super thin metal, it's typical for Asian cars.

I have a 98 Honda CR-V. I love my baby❤️ She’s got 267k miles and ice cold ac, damn good heat too.
Sweet. My 97 has 244,000. Keep valves adjusted every 30,000. Otherwise too tight and pressure on valve seats and can break.
I have a 2001 with 99k on it. It's my baby too, I'm using it until the wheels fall off. And yeah, whenever I turn the heat on I can't believe how damn good it is for a 20 year old car! My parent's 2013 Pathfinder has arguably worse heat than my CRV.

If you buy/drive a crv of this era, take the plunge and replace all the suspension bushings, they ride amazing when working right. Get the valves adjusted. Change fluids. (Honda MTF for good manuals, GM Syncro-mesh only if its grinding. Use the honda stuff for the rear diff if a 4wd) You can get a disc conversion for these as well using prelude parts. CEL codes at this point are going to be p0420 for old cat (you can use a defouler if not EPA). Most go about 250k before needing major work. The 99-01 models are more desirable with more horsepower, and slightly better interior plastics. Relays are the most common no crank fix irl. These 1st gen crvs are the only ones with double-wishbone suspension, (almost) the same as the integra. Which is why fixing the handling is so worthwhile. Hope this helps someone.
I prefer the 2003+ CRV's. The engine has a timing chain, which means no maintenance except on time quality oil changes. Those older CRV have belts with interference engines, if it breaks, get ready for a engine swap.
The valves are scheduled for adjustment like every 30k or something. You can still find 1st gen 5speed AWD crvs for cheap and theyre super fun in winter.
@@mediaguy4037even new ones?

Got a 97 CRV in my family. 390,000 miles! It has never been babied and never been garbage kept. Swapped out the transmission around 5,000 miles ago. The family goal is to reach 500,000 thousand miles in that car. These really are great cars.
Was it expensive?

Oh a little trick I used on my 98 CRV to fix a worn keyhole. Take a pencil and scratch off some graphite flakes onto a piece of paper. Then try to get the graphite flakes into the keyhole. In fact put some on the key while your at it. Insert the key and remove it a couple of times to get the graphite to settle in all the nooks and crannies. Turn the key too a couple of times. And viola! The key works like new! I only had to do it once too, so it works as a long term if not permanent fix!
I learned it from my aunt's husband who taught me a lot about how to fix my own cars. Any problem I ever had somehow he knew exactly how to fix it.

BMW: Bloody Money Waster
In 1996 I was in the market for a small SUV. I looked at what I thought was the 2 most viable options, the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. After test driving both, I chose the Honda. It is the best vehicle I ever had! I still have it and it's my daily driver. It has over 289k miles and still runs smooth. I do most of the maintenance because the engineering of this vehicle made it easy to access all drainage and refill points, for oil and fluids. Just like the vehicle Scott featured, my CR-V interior, especially the seats is like new. Scott knows good engineered vehicles.
2001 Honda CRV owner, 136,592 miles, runs like a beast! I love this thing, definitely gonna drive until the wheels fall off!
BMW cars are like celebrities in Hollywood, all made of plastic.
Cheap plastic, expensive to maintain.
This is one of the better car comparisons I’ve seen.

Yeah, I own a 1999 Honda CR-V, now with 182,000 miles on it. I bought 8 years ago from a family friend for $2,500 when it had 125,000 miles. It runs well but I did need to replace a few things ... radiator, catalytic converter, rear struts. Yes, it's got a few dings and the paint is fading, but I expect to get my money out of that car for years to come.
My 2001 CRV has 369,000 miles on it, including a lot of road trips with my kids. Still fun to drive. It’s now a dedicated dog car, so the back seats are always down.
Loving my 1999 crv almost 300,000 miles still drives like new.

I had the same 2001 CR-V. Broken door handle, drivers side window didn't work. 5 speed and I loved it. As long as you do regular maintenance, it will run forever.
I wrapped mine around a lightpole on a winter afternoon, and my insurance company cashed it out.
This is why I grow to love my ‘92 Accord the more I have it! Sure its exterior is rough around the edges but the seat fabric is still pristine even at 28 years old! Although I’ve redone the front end, it’s real fun to drive especially with the manual transmission
367,985 miles on my 1999 CR-V and still going strong. Replaced timing belt 3 times so far, water pump, fuel pump, CV axles, radiator. Maintenance cost for the last 10 years I have owned it is less than $2000. but I do a majority of the repairs myself. BTW, label on the door post say "Made in Japan"!! Looking to go at least 500,000 miles...

I swapped a Honda CR-V engine into my 98 integra and it moves 🔥
Just got a 2005 CRV SE for $3000. Hoping she lasts.
My first vehicle was a 2000 Honda CR-V in green. Had a lot of great memories with this vehicle and miss it to this day!
My 1997 CR-V with pretty much the same mileage (480,000 km) is 3 years older and is still working perfectly fine. Changed rotors, calipers, resonator mid-pipe, mufflers, starter, etc. like what I had expected from a 23 year-young SUV but nothing else unexpected went wrong, except the ignition switch that caused it to stall while on the road. Not even that, I just got a letter from Honda Canada saying that there is a pending recall on the airbag so I'll be getting a brand airbag soon :)
How is it doing now?

Hi Scotty, I'm a recent subscriber to your excellent channel. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us! A family friend of ours is an old school mechanic like yourself and he has a 1990's Honda Civic as his daily driver. He keeps performing standard maintenance on it and has also completed some performance upgrades over the years like boring out the cylinders. It has well over 300,000 miles on it, gets close to 50mpg and I believe he said it ran 12 second quarter miles at our local drag strip when he brought it there on a whim. To further illustrate your points, several other people I know have had Honda's and Toyota's with 250+k to 300k miles before they got rid of their vehicles. Awesome channel and thanks again!
I have a 99 crv, absolutely love it, runs great still, The paints I’m still good shape so difference there, I’m going on 220,000 miles no problems since I replaced the tire rods, it even still has some pretty decent power, love the AWD in the winter

Wash the car ?
I paid $3,200 for a 2006 Civic with 205,000 miles on it. The engine was replaced at 81,000 miles by Honda due to a recall. So, the motor had 124,000 on it and pretty much everything had 205,000. I've had it almost 4 years and put 60,000 miles on it. The only repair so far is a new starter (which was a PITA). If it blows up tomorrow, I got my money's worth on it.
Still going?
I have a '99 CR-V with 361,000 on it. Still my daily driver. The only major work I've done to it was a valve job. Those 1st gen. engines had soft valve seats, and if you didn't keep the lash adjusted, it would decrease until the exhaust valve(s) burned. Even if you did, you would eventually run out of adjustment. To compound this problem, the owner's manual states the adjustment interval as "100,000 miles". Come to find out, it only states this in the U.S. version. All others say 30,000 if memory serves. Anyway I've had it for 15 years and it's been a great car, and since I hit a deer 2 years ago (right after cancelling my comprehensive insurance), it's officially a beater! Love your channel Scotty!
Same for my '01. Dealer serviced, never a value lashing adjustment despite service bulletins advising every 30K. Honda wouldn't fix it, said the car was too old. Found a independent Honda shop that took care of it. After the rebuild, she's a keeper.
She has more keys than a medieval dungeon keeper. That's why the ignition is so worn.
Got myself a 2001 automatic Honda CR-V over here in the UK, I absolutely love it.
The last owner seemed to look after it mostly except a few dents here and there but it is an excellent car and I've been really enjoying it.
I've spent a fair amount getting it serviced and things fixed but it's an awesome car, simple interior which is light and not dark and oppressive which is great.
Definitely a car I want to keep for years to come 😁
I have a 2005 CR-V with 184,000 miles. Runs great. AC and heat works fine. Power locks don't work, but I don't mind using the key. This video may have saved me from spending $$$ on another used car.
My mom was going to trade in her 2008 CRV towards a newer car, so I swooped in a bought it off her. Super glad I did, it's been a great daily driver and it never breaks the bank when it comes to having it serviced or replacing parts. It's also pretty easy to work on at home.

I love this thing and if anything ever happened to it I'd probably just get another one. I wonder if this model is a sweet spot or if a later model might be better. I could honestly use something with a little more towing capacity.
Sure its been upside down a few times, and totaled and flooded. And theres no windows or wheels. But HEY its a HONDA.
This is so great to hear some more info on older vehicles before buying one!
I just passed our 2005 CR-V 4wd with 276k miles on to my dad. The worst issues we had with that car were connected to the a/c. They had a design flaw with that generation CR-V’s a/c. We drove it nearly 400 miles from our house to his and it ran like a champ. It was the 2nd of 3 CR-V’s we have owned in the past 20+ years. Our son now drives our 2013. We have since moved on to the Pilot.
I bought a 2000 cr-v for $500. I had to spent $300 more on a new power steering and I'm slowly fixing some other minor problems, but it's a great car for under $1000. Thanks for your advice, Scotty!
I just bought a very nice one for a garage kept one….4750$ total and the owner had done over 2000$ work on it and just surface rust, all functional and a Check engine just popped up, 145k miles 4x4.
Not the smartest financial choose but I love how well the car is.

Who compares a honda to a bmw?
scotty thats who
For smart people who value reliability.
Rob Basque I’ve had more problems with my 2008 crv then my bmw
I'm glad there's Honda and Toyota that stick for us common peasants
wholeNwon poor people.
Yeah but for the time that bmw works you won’t miss that shitty Honda
Thanks Scotty. I'm looking for A CRV to have as my daily and this answered my questions.
I bought a Prelude at an auction for pretty cheap. Only needed a timing belt change and wheel bearing. It was pretty reliable.
Thank you Scotty! I’m going to try that Lysol in the air-conditioning to get rid of mold and bacteria and see what happens! You’re the best!
Haven't seen a can of Lysol in months...those were the days.😆
I love that car I have one with over 300000 miles on it and it’s still really smooth and reliable
@The Muckler Rude
What year is yours?
I have a 97 Honda CRV paid $550 off my neighbour been driving it for 6 years now, and I made a snow plow for it😁
The Muckler Hey Karen, the sentence only needs a .or, to make it complete, what didn’t you understand?

I got so lucky, I got one that had been in the same family since new. The father of the person I bought it from is a retired mechanic who looked after it. It has zero mechanical issues, no scratches or dents, Absolutely everything works as it should. They even added an aftermarket stereo, a remote starter and an LED bar to it a few years ago. When I bought it, the timing belt had been replaced only 5K ago! It was great in the snow already then I put a set of studded Nokians on it and now it's Canadian winter beast! I sometimes can't believe my CRV is 24 years old.
I can't say enough good things about these CRVs, they are definitively among the best AWD cheap cars you can get.
I bought a 2010 Civic in 2015 with 72k miles on it. Fast forward to 2023 & I have the same car with 337k on it (175k from driving for Uber & Lyft).. Car is a beast. Still drives like a champ. Daily driver in Los Angeles. Sips fuel as well. Love my little Honda.
My dad had one of these which was in very good condition with just 180k km driven. Sadly last month the car got into an accident and the repairs were not worth it for the age of it. Now we have a new CR-V. I do miss the old one though it was really nice.
This channel's vibe is very Better Call Saul meets Trailer Park Boys (bc kitties). I love it.
I have the same vehicle. I had the same window problem, the same antenna problem etc... This car is super easy to prepare, super reliable, and an amazing first car for a teenager.
I've put about 50,000 miles on her and I have had not one problem other than the ones I set out to fix when I got it at first.
9.5/10 for reliability, efficiency, and convenience.
Thanks for the tip about cleaning mold
Bought my 2009 vibe at an auction 3 years ago. Has been a fantastic vehicle.
That's cuz it's a rebadged Toyota
Hi Scotty! I really loved your recent videos featuring old Honda CRV's. Those Honda's run forever. I myself own a 2002 (2nd gen) Honda CRV with 150k+ miles that is still in very good condition; basically, everything works. I live in Houston as well. If you are interested in producing another video on Honda CRV, I'll be happy to lend you my car :)
Garage kept?
Love this dude. I went from knowing nothing to becoming a mechanic over night. Aye I need help with my car I don’t have a mechanical license. U make everything u do look so easy lol. Tried to change out my dashboard speakers and now my turning signal don’t work
Yeah. I've had to replace all doorlock actuators and rebuild the key ignition on my crv. Great beater car I've had since 85k miles in 2011. At 225 now.
1st gen CRVs(RD1) are the most fun, reliable, and capable small SUVs in my opinion. they are extremely easy to work on, also have a big aftermarket parts support. Give them a 2" lift and AT tires, they'd be ready to explore.
Hi Scotty
Waiting patiently to be a tester for your new APP👍👍
hello, me too!
I recently saw a first-gen CRV restored to show-room quality and it was a head-turner. I'm holding on to my '01.
Wow, that is one of the cleanest engines in an RD1 I've seen. Mine just hit 220, looking to push 300+ if I can.
I can remember my uncle told me you drive a car until the wheel falls off. Yep it was older and finally a wheel fell off and he went out and got another used one. I am sure he really didn't think it would happen.
Seriously😂
Just repair it. Probably it had very bad shaped ball joints.
Yeah, I remember when I was 16, front tire fell off my Pontiac, a flaming red wheel into oncoming traffic, didnt take long to drive until the tires fall off, problem was I just bought the dang thing
Owned 3 CRV's over the years. Great cars! Best was our 2006 with 5 speed MANUAL transmission. Sadly 2006 was last year for manual transmission CRV.
Those MK11 were the best in the Range they upgraded same with a face lift range... our second one of that Model... Cruse Control, Leather Seats / Steering Wheel, New Shaped Alloy Wheels, New Front Light Cluster with light levelling ....We have one great Yoke...would like a Five speed manual but my partner has got so used to Automatic... she won't go back... There's even an overdrive/ shift down button that shifts down into a higher revving mode for overtaking...Lol...
Great video. Im on my 3rd honda... 1 accord, and 2 oddyseys now that we have kids. My hubby owned an accord and gave it to his dad.
