I was just about to tear down the engine to diagnose this same noise on my girlfriends car and possibly replace the timing chain and tensioner today. This video has just saved me a whole lot of work. I can't thank you enough. Great video!
I had a problem with the chain. It was hanging loose. . I flushed the engine with forte . . And the problem is gone. I think the tensioner was stuck . Now the engine is clean inside everything works as it should be 👌👌
Bought my daughter a 1krfe yaris 9 yrs ago. Rattles when cold, dont like it but this makes me feel better. Done 80k now used your channel to change coolant, changed oil yearly, and filters when required. Changed front discs once and pads and shoes. Iridium plugs at 50k. It will happily cruise at 70 and regularly gives 55-60mpg on a true 5 seater with sliding back seat. If revved it is quite nippy. If not revved it has loads torque. No other maintenance at all and drives as good as it did when i picked it up at 19k miles. Cannot think of better combination for a learner car or someone who wants cheap reliable motoring. Channels like this are superb. Thank you sir, i would never have found the water pump drain plug. And ticking noise explanation great. When i bought it toyota diagnosed the timing chain, that was 60k miles ago!! Indeed the college i worked at the motor vehicle teachers said the same when in fact it is not at all. @@aaanton11 hi aanton, still loving the channel, love the peugeot van. Daughters car just done 100k. Had to clean pcv valve, throttle body, and map or maf sensor. Running beautifully still
I love my Aygo and I love this engine. Simple, economic and surprisingly powerful as I embarrassed few BMW's on the traffic lights already 🤣 especially 2nd gear. It's insane that it goes up to 65mph on 2nd gear and it's asking for more. I've done in my Aygo 50k in 18 months and now it has 125k on the clock. Oil and filters with no delay, brakes tyres and bulbs. That's what this car is asking for. Together with tiny request of petrol. Non stop on deliveries and I do 400 miles before it starts beeping and the last bar is flashing. Aygo ♥️♥️♥️
Just bought a 2013 107 today - love the car, and reckoned the noise was normal for a 3 cyl engine, but had a slight niggling doubt. Thanks very much for your excellent explanation- so glad I found it on UA-cam ! 👍

Just bought a Peugeot 107, got worried I had piston slap or rod knock, but you've put my mind at ease. You should do a video with audio of the difference between these 3 noises as no one else has
Big thumbs up from me anton 👍🏼 I bought my 107 beginning of November (private buy) I test drove it all sounded great. So I pop by my local garage and he said the same as anton an that my 107 was in great shape for it’s age an mileage. It’s how I found this channel looking for advice about this noise plus found some great advice about a small boot leak I had an fixed on my own ☺️ fantastic channel 🙌🏻
I have this sound even when im not accelerating , should i try to clean the sensor? . I am having this sound even on low gear going downhill. I didnt have this sound untill last oil changing . Im worrying this is the type of oil or something i did worng. What should i do?
Phew, I'm glad I watched your video. I've recently bought a 2008 107 with just 49000 on the clock and heard this ticking. Panic mode! That's put my mind at rest thanks 😊
I have the same engine in my Toyota Yaris XP13 from 2013 and was wondering about that noise for a long time. Especially in the cold days, it takes a while until the noise disappears. After a long motorway run the noise is nearly gone. You can barely hear it when hitting 4000-5000rpm. What I also suspect is that the engine runs best on 0W20 oil, as it is the recommended oil from Toyota. My engine is running on 5W30 from Shell, which is a quite good oil. I will try a 0W20 with the next inspection. Your explanation was spot on. Thanks for that!
Really helpful video. My Ex-wife said her 107 sounded tappy and when I drove it, it sounded almost diesel like from cold which now makes sense with the way you have explained these are designed to run. Thanks 👍
1,5 year I drive my Aygo and worried about this sound. I visited many maintenance stations , including Toyota and they all told to visit doctor. And now my doctor is Anton !!! Problem is solved !!! Thanks 👍❤️🇺🇦
I got my 107 for service. I asked about that noise and they told me something about the valves and it costs a lot to repair. You just save me from that liars and thives . Thanks man
My P107 from 2006 makes exactly the same noise, as long as it is not warmed up. The noise is louder at cold winter days than in summer, and it vanishes after a few kilometers driving, then it runs quite smooth. Good to hear that it is nothing to worry about. From another source I have read, that it is generally impossible or at least very difficult, to create any engine that is powerful, fuel efficient and really smooth running at the same time. So in the case of the 1kr-fe engine, a bit of harshness would be just a trade-off for its good fuel efficiency and its good torque in relation to its small displacement. Thank you very much for your explaining!
Thanks very much for that video. My dad's hung up his keys and given me his very shiny low mileage C1 to sell. I was very worried about the noise, being unfamiliar. The noise does indeed tail off a bit after warm up but never goes away. Now I can sell with confidence, this vid will be worth a good few quid to me. Thanks.
I bought an aygo about half a year ago and i couldn't place where this sound is comming from and whether it causes any damage. Now after this video i am relieved that it doesn't deal any real damage to the engine. I can now also pick out the sound from these engines when i'm walking down the street and it's always a citybug of some kind. All and all, great video and a great explanation of the ticking noise on my Aygo. Cheers!
Dude thank you ❤❤, recently just got a 2013 C1 120K on the clock. Drove to work this morning early (0500) and haven’t used it once in the cold etc. I was worried she was done but everything you’ve pointed out makes sense and does what she’s doing. It got less noisy as I got into the trip and tonight same home. So happy it’s a feature and just gotta use to of it. Plus too use to the BMW 8 did have. Thank you again dude. Too info and great demo, explanation.
Thanks for the explanation on this. My wife’s C1 is making this sound and it’s just hit 26000 miles before I noticed it. The ticking sound does go away after the engine has warmed up. Your video has put my mind at rest regarding the health of the engine. Thank you so much as I can now try to explain to my wife what the sound is and she will think I’m clever for working out what I noticed and she hadn’t lol. 👍
i read somewhere that only the exhaust side is variable on valve timing, i only use Shell, it sound horrible on other petrol station fuels, especially on supermarket fuel, there must be a difference, touch wood at 88k nothing has gone bad with my Aygo, regular oil changes have avoided any sludge build up in the engine, as these are built like swiss watches, i bought it during scrappage in 2008 / 2009 brand new for £6k Have a look how much they want now for them now new... the new Aygo Compact Cross Over was £17k the last time i checked, dealerships are price gouging again. and have found if you use supermarket fuel the Aygo will make far more noise than Shell fuel.
I have a Yaris with this 1KR-FE engine, had a friend of mine who's a seasoned mechanic point me to this video when i asked him about that sound. Have heard it from the moment i brought it home from the dealer.
My Mk5 Mondeo 2.0 diesel ticks on cold start until the engine reaches temperature, sounds like lifters, really annoying and everyone who hears it, straight away ask what's wrong with your car 😂 the dealership I purchased the car from has always said this is normal and I've always argued it's not, I've already been confused how a modern car with only 50k miles can sound so crap and you have just answered it, thanks mate this video has been really helpful
I've put a couple of videos on my channel to show this noise I'm having, unfortunately my curiosity gets the better of me 😂 it would be awesome if you could have a listen to let me know if this is as you explain in your video, there are no obvious problems with the car just a ticking noise. Thanks again
Morning Ant.... This is why us subscriber's love ya channel. A mind of information. Knowledge & well explained. I'm beginning to like the "DINKY TOYS" too. Great video as always. Fantastic range of subjects on the channel. Stay safe. Stay healthy to yourself & the gang. Alan L200
Thanks for that explanation of the ticking noise, I've just taken my daughters C1 to the shops when I heard a ticking sound...... Then I thought..... Oh noooo, what's that. You have suitably reassured me.
I have the same engine in my Yaris. My mechanic told me that the sound is very normal in this engine. After I watch your video I became totally relieved!! Thank you!
Glad I watched this, just noticed mine doing this over 3000 rpm yesterday, or more prominent anyway. Only has 23k on the clock as well but has been sat around a bit, thought it was pinging and something was up, glad to hear its normal!
I describe it as a warbling noise as if a little bird 🐦 is under the bonnet. It's quite a pleasant sound but only usually get it from cold uphill. The exhaust rattle is more through lower gears. Its fun whizzing round in second and third. Interesting you were a Honda mechanic. My other car is a Jazz. Both great cars. C1 and Jazz.
Brilliant thank you, i actually thought mine was slightly loose auxiliary belt due to the chirpy squealing noise, it sounds identical to yours thanks for great info 👍
Great video i thought id bought a lemon i have bought a 60 plate c1 and when engine is cold its very ticky under load it does quieten down ince ive driven for 5 mins or so but never completely goes away ,i have peace of mind now knowing its normal ,THANK YOU
Great video mate . Low oil ! I think i cant get clear reading on my dip-stick ! As soon has I hear that ticking clanking sounds I full her up and it gos always ! I ran my 1st car out off oil so I can tell Thanks for your videos
I let my bug warm up if I can before I leave work for home. I'd always thought it was just noise from the cam followers when the engine was cold. Thanks for the explanation.
@@aaanton11 question,. My clutch biting point is always high, standard for these little cars, but from time to time the clutch false bites much lower down, kinda like it bites a little and then stops until I get to the regular biting point, any ideas? Clutch sticking and on its way out maybe?
Hi Anton, very interesting video indeed. Someone did tell me that adjusting the valve clearances helps but its apparently a very tricky thing to do on these cars. I have an 07 Aygo on 191600 miles and as it got to over 100k it stated using oil (about a litre every 2k miles) I changed the PCV valve and I haven't used any oil for last 1500 miles and improved my mpg from averaging 54mpg to 59.9mpg (tested over about a 1000 miles) It could be an interesting little video for you to make?? I had to buy the part from Japan as I couldn't locate one in UK. Keep up the great videos mate.
@@aaanton11 If you are at all interested I have a FB page for these cars I would be honoured if you would like to join The Bug 3 Zone (Toyota Aygo/Citroen C1/Peugeot 107/108) and promote your videos there Regards - Colin
@@MrEnigma64 they’re an impressive engine. I’ve only just bought mine as a temp vehicle. It’s done 165k miles. It sounds horrible when it’s cold, but once warmed up it sounds fine. I don’t think it’s been serviced as often as it should’ve been, but it goes well for what it is and seems to sip fuel compared to my Golf Gti 😄
Glad you enjoyed it! hope yours is still sounding superb with the sportex hanging of the back, Hope you and yours are all well, Thanks Derek for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
So if you're arguing it's the feature of this engine, then any aygo running off the production facility would have piston slap? With ours I THINK it started this noise approx. 10/15.000km ago, or I never noticed it before. Apart from the start it disappears within minutes though after getting hot and still runs smoothly after 170.000 km. Here in the Netherlands I read threads where engines are replaced under warranty over this, or that it is at least a defect causing piston/bore wear resulting in e.g. high oil usage. So you're positive it isn't? It at least seems by the many accounts of people it's quite common and the aygo can get old with it. But yeah, I'm about to sell it and it's not really a USP when a buyer hears it. Perhaps I should refer your link.
I have owned 2 low mileage 1KR-FE engines, both made the noise when cold. Once engine more than another, I just went easy with the throttle until warm (and the pistons have expanded slightly).
This is crazy. I have a Subaru Justy IV with the 1KR-FE engine and it does tick only when I accelerate under load and it’s the loudest at 2k RPM and it goes away or become more silent when it gets up to temp. I was wondering why it does that and I was suspecting the timing chain being worn out and/or the clutch or transmission…so this video was really useful for me😁
Same here lol! Loud at acceleration and deceleration at about 2200 to 2500 RPM. Gets better after warmed up. 160.000 km. Took me 2 weeks to find someone with the same "Problem". Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much for explaining this! My 107 also makes a ticking noise sometimes when the engine is cold. This ticking disappears when the engine is getting warm. I think it’s gone after 5 to 10 minutes.
We got a c1 with that same anoying sound,i do hate it😅 we bought it with 90.000km. now at 170.000 km. Still the same sound. Nothing broke. Tried thicker oil, nothing helps. The only " bad" thing it consumes some oil!! 1 liter at 3000 km. Thats VAG style😅 Maybe a option to get rid of the thicking noise is to let the ignition tune at a good shop. Change the ignition timing? Thoughts 😊 Thanks for your vids, Greetz from the Netherlands ✌️🎉
Dimitri, Athens, Greece. about a month ago l bought a second hand 2012 citroen c1 1.0 68 hp. with 91200 km clocked which had been imported from Germany. lt was tested by a friend mechanic but it was hot and we had the windows down and didn't notice the ticking sound. Once l drove it, the ticking sound would appear when accelerating and above 1700 revs and initially l thought that it was "pinking" noise from bad petrol. l used this petrol and then filled it up with 100 octane petrol. Nothing changed so at the next fill-up l added a little bottle of Redex, engine and injector cleaner ( l think it was 90 ml ) and left for a short trip of about 350 km. and then started using it again in the city. After doing another 100 km and 3 of 6 tank bars down, l then noticed that the ticking had been reduced considerably. lf the noise was rated a 10 level, it now was down to about 3 to 4. Doing another 100 km and accelerating normally in the city, no noise is heard at all. l floor and accelerate now hard and maybe you hear a 1 or 2 level compared to the initial 10 level of ticking. L searched the internet on engine and injector cleaners and they say that it takes a while and after about 500 to 600 km for the additive to do its job. l wonder if this is all that had to be done to get rid of the ticking noise. i initially had changed the engine oil from regular to synthetic just in case the cylinders weren't oiled well and was the culprit of this piston slap but nothing happened. Reading on the internet, they say that Lucus engine and injector cleaner is the top cleaner and if l can find it, l intend to give a try once l use all the current gasoline in my tank. l can only think that there was dirt or carbon deposits in the injectors which gave maybe a one sided "spray" and after combustion, it gave a not even push but rather a one sided push to the piston and likewise, a side push to the piston which in turn created the piston slap. Since l'm not a mechanic l'd appreciate your thoughts. Kind Regards from Athens, Greece.
Great video I was worrying about this as the noise does change also I found using super unleaded petrol it's getting better MPG . Thanks I can hold off on the garage visit 👍🏻
Thank you so much very interesting, I have a Citroen C1 love it but has this little tick tick noise you have put my mind a rest it’s not a massive problem thank you 😊
Tbh I’d like to get your opinion on this subject I’ve noticed the classic tick from the vvti at around 3k I’ve noticed a hollow chatter / ticking noise which comes from quite low revs when the car is pulling quite noticeable around 40mph in 5th when the engine is at full working temp I did notice it a lot when the rear silencer on the exhaust was shot had that replaced and slowly it’s seemed to have come back I’m not sure if it’s a faulty rear back box or maybe a catalyst the car runs faultless pulls well starts runs drives as it should regular service Castrol 5/30 fully synth and man oil filter done about every 5k or when the oil is going dark and ran on e5 I’m no mechanic it just sounds odd Tia Lee
So glad I found this channel, recently picked up an aygo ice blue, great little car, since its got a lot colder its definitely noisy and worried me till I seen your videos, less so now as a good run really helps it, would love to know if you have a video up for some plastic trim around the radiator, as I've a broken piece on the side that I assume is creating a tapping noise when driving above 35mph, the number has taken a small hit somewhere in its time but had no cat against it and I paid a decent price for it, rev counter is next but I can't seem to get a good price and I've a leak on the left side of the inner boot, I assume is probably the rear light. Thanks for the videos and hopefully you have an answer to the loose plastic behind the bumper
The loose plastic can normally be drilled and cable tied together, the rev counters are always for sale on the city bug Facebook group, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Omg so glad iv seen this video I just thought it was my car didnt think that’s how it was ment to sound lol as changed oils spark plug and everything but still sounded like it so glad I know why as my partner says it’s sounds like a lawnmower lol it’s my first car
When do the timing chains need doing on these mines got a slight vibrate on idle and same thing test drive it it was fine next morning tap tap tap mines on 112k
My car is a Yaris (2009) with a 1KR-FE engine onboard. In the first year after purchase it was not producing ticking noises. Also this car makes the described noise which is particularly loud in the first few seconds after starting. After about 5 seconds it already gets more quiet, but is still audible when accelerating with a cold engine which is unavoidable. With a warm engine it is audible under heavy load. The fact that it is loudest in the first few seconds after starting made me think that it has to do with oil pressure and perhaps conrod bearing issues, can that not be the case ? T.b.h., I was planning to have another engine put in because of the noise. What are recommendations to follow in the case of the mentioned piston slap ? Maybe use 0W30 instead of the prescribed 5W30 to get the oil quicker around when cold ?
I get a similar very subtle ticking/ringing, most pronounced under load from low revs, in my 2001 Yaris. Given the 1SZ-FE engine in this car was kind of the predecessor to the 1KR-FE and shares a lot its features, this makes sense. Although it does have an extra cylinder, which totally changes the engine note 🤣.
I have 2 Aygo. First, for my daughter but the engine is so cool (90Km/h in 2nd, 140 in 3rd & more than 170km/h in 4th) than i decide to buy one for me ! But one my daughter's Aygo make this noise when cold. Next time, i'll trying Shell V power to see. Thanks for your video !
I also experience differences with different oil levels. When it's near the maximum level, it's noticeably less than if it's halfway (or one-thirds) between min and max. I always assumed that whenever it's between min and max it should be fine, regardless of ticking. However, when I found out the difference between min and max is 1,5 lt (according to owners manual) instead of 1 lt on a total volume of 3,1 l, I check it a bit more often as it means that the oil quality degrades quicker than with other cars as the content percentage of pollutants probably will be more significant than with cars having larger oil volumes.
Thank you. I have a peugeut 108 2014 1.0 and i've got the same noise, which is mainly when is cold outside and almost dissapears as i keep driving for few miles, like the engine is getting heated and almost fixes the noise. Few years ago this noise wasn't really there, but now, even after engine getting heated after long driving, if listened carefully ,noise is still there. People keep saying is the alternator belt but i don't really think so..i also saw a video that the crankshaft forced vebtilation valve might need cleaning..what do you think?
The oil must be 15W40 if it is ok for your winter temp...and original oil filter. This is the way my noise gone. Peugeot 107 first owner. Noise start at about 50000 km. Then i change the oil viscosity to 15w40 noise gone and now car is 98000 km. On low milage car noise is from timng chain tensioner. This hidraulic tensioner dont like thin oils i think. On Citroen C1 there is service document about use 15W40 oil if winter temp is above - 10deg.
Than you for this! really took my mind off of it... I intend doing a rebuild of the engine (174.655 Km) because I have a sense of power loss since the days I picked it up (around 84.000ish).
It's hard to sense something this car doesn't have (power) xD. Sometimes I feel like mines slower but sometimes wonder if it's because on some days the traffic around you are trying to progress faster for what ever reason (maybe they just finished work and want to get home)
why might my aygo burning more oil, 2012 iv cleaned the pcv valve with carb cleaner and changed spark plugs but still burns oil, every 2 weeks im adding oil, there is no leaks whatsoever, i used for deliveries fast food, i have searched and found piston rings and worn valve seals, could be the culprit, can you confirm this is the case if so can you do a video on how to replace these, i cant find anything on youtube on these cars showing how to replace.. many many thanks in advance
@@aaanton11 using far more than that also iv seen no leaks visible so it’s burning in combustion chamber I think today iv put lucas oil seal in it and will see how I get on
Wow thank you so much for this info.... Does the type of oil have anything to do with this ? I'm using Kroon Oil 0W30 with the thought that thinner oil at start will lubricate faster.
I noticed it on mine usually when the engine is cold, I always thought it was injector tick because you can only hear it when you're using the injectors, once your take your foot off the throttle the noise disappears. My partner's stepdad tried telling me it was a worn camshaft but surely that wouldn't be effected by the throttle position. Which is why I thought it might be injector tick.
Great information, I bought a Citroen c1 a few days ago... I really like the car but I've been really worried about the ticking noise when cold, my car still has has the noise when it's warmed up but it's much quieter than when cold! Is it okay that it still does slightly when warm??
What do you think if I pour Liqui Moly Cera Tec in the oil could it sound any better,on the commercial says no friction and smoother engine sound. Excuse my English
Hello, my wife's 3 cylinder 2010 seat ibiza(timing chain, with hydraulic tensioner) also had a ticking/rattling noise, especially when it was cold. It became worse and at some point she had a damaged engine that she had to replace. the timing chain was broken and damaged the engine severely. So i think the tensioner got clogged/ couldn't put the right tension on the chain, whereas the chain jumped the cam/ snap/jam and cause the valves to hit the pistons. So i wouldn't just sit and wait for the noise to go away, i would run a cleaner, put in new/right grade oil. Regards
These are totally different engines, The Toyota unit is bomb proof. But there is a difference between a ticking sound and a big rattle, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Thanks man
Thanks for the info, & Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
They would be suggesting valve clearances which are shims in these. Big job and should be done every 60k. Mine has 142k without it done so far
Everything you say is very true, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
thankyou thankyou thankyou, that sound has been driving me nuts by not knowing what it is. But now, thanks to you, I can rest easy. cheers mate

Anton, I have a 2006 Aygo and haven't noticed the ticking sound...but boy the engine sounds fantastic when accelerating in low gear. Love the growl!
Yes it does, both the 3 cylinder and 6 cylinder engines have a similar tone, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
i read somewhere that only the exhaust side is variable on valve timing,
i only use Shell, it sound horrible on other petrol station fuels, especially on supermarket fuel,
there must be a difference, touch wood at 88k nothing has gone bad with my Aygo,
regular oil changes have avoided any sludge build up in the engine, as these are built like swiss watches,
i bought it during scrappage in 2008 / 2009 brand new for £6k
Have a look how much they want now for them now new...
the new Aygo Compact Cross Over was £17k the last time i checked, dealerships are price gouging again.
and have found if you use supermarket fuel the Aygo will make far more noise than Shell fuel.
You grabbed a bargain, Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
On the advice of a good mechanic, I got my engine oil hot and then did an oil change. This has cured my ticking noise for now.

Thanks for this, thought I had a loose valve, but that is exactly what our C1 sounds like and behaves.

I describe it as a warbling noise as if a little bird 🐦 is under the bonnet. It's quite a pleasant sound but only usually get it from cold uphill. The exhaust rattle is more through lower gears.

Brilliant , I always thought it was like a valve tappet noise , but I've heard it on many kr1fe engines so I just assumed it was normal 👍👍
Yes, exactly, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
They are all the same and it’s a fantastic engine Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

The only " bad" thing it consumes some oil!! 1 liter at 3000 km. Thats VAG style😅 Maybe a option to get rid of the thicking noise is to let the ignition tune at a good shop. Kind Regards from Athens, Greece.
additives can always make a difference, it will also alter the burn, the flame front on the piston, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Don't worry about it, they just sound this way, You can use different oils some have had success. Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
😂 great engine Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Don't worry as long as there is oil in the engine, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Wow thank you so much for this info.... Does the type of oil have anything to do with this ? I'm using Kroon Oil 0W30 with the thought that thinner oil at start will lubricate faster.
Oils definitely make a difference, some have used 10w 40 with good results, but I stick to the 5w 30, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
These engines are really reliable I have never seen a camshaft wear, Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠

They all have the same distinctive sound, the aygo is still going strong with 175000 miles on the clock, it sounds identical to the 107 with 75000 miles on the clock, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@@aaanton11 what about one with 22k on the clock?
I have a 60 plate. 107. Great car like you say.. I use ya videos all time. Water leaks in boot sorted..disc and pads change. New back box replaced. Need to do anti roll bar links but not sure am confident enough to do that?
Generally it’s a nice easy fix just a case of un doing the bolts, holding the centre if it swivels with a Allen key Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
