Hi Quin, just curious, why did you not try the fly on these Coho's? That's all I ever use, the toughest fighting fish I ever caught was a 14lb Coho on a polar shrimp fly. Stripped me down to the backing three times on a 13ft Spey rod.I would sure enjoy a day on the river with you guys. Good banter, no guides, just make your own day out on the river. That's all I've ever done myself for sixty year. Still doing it.

Hey captain Quinn, I ran into your videos today through auto play while tying up some roe for the morning and I have to tell you, they are amazing. The fishing is one thing but your outlook on life and metaphors are just unreal. The world would be better off if there was more people like you living in it. Keep on being you man!

Hey Quinn! This is actually my favorite video of yours. I'm a 24 year old avid fisherman in the lower wasteland (Vancouver) and can only dream of going on adventures like this. My hope is that I can find a career that will enable me to live up there in the north one day and truly enjoy life out in nature like you do. Getting skunked for Steel on a remote little flow or Coho fishing in the boat on that beautiful brown river looks like an absolute doosy! Keep up the good work and good vibes.

Wow I never knew about crabs like that!
Always wondered why so many crab shells are at the beaches when i'm fishing. Of course the full dead on armored crab = dead one. hahaha
Even in the winter or early spring i see crabs crawling out of the sand! Not sure which season but sure was my first seeing them like that!

I've been waiting for this! Thank you, Captain, I love your work.
You inspired me when I first discovered your channel.
I was a bass fisherman and now I can't imagine how I lived without feeling a salmonid shaking on the end of my fly rod.
    Thank you.
And please, PLEASE, don't stop what you're doing.
P.S. If you don't tell me the song playing at the beginning I'm going to cry. I listen to your videos through my phone while I drive to my fishing spots, I want to put together a playlist and I want to use a lot of the songs you put on your videos, but have trouble finding them.

In what way does catching Coho kill them?

    • @TheCaptainQuinn
      @TheCaptainQuinn  8 років тому +20

+Tristan duck Hey Tristan, great question! So...without getting into it too much, I will outline the issue: I am assuming that you are familiar with the biology and life cycle of pacific salmon. Coho are typically around 18 moths old when they return to spawn, the last phase of their lives and the one that likely puts the most stress on the fish and during which they exert the most energy all while relying strictly stored fat reserves.
They do not take any energy in during this phase but have to compete with others for a mate, escape the countless predators, dig their redds, release thousands of eggs and sperm at the exact right moment, cover their fertilized eggs with substrate, protect their redds from predators and competitors. This is all assuming that they have enough energy to make it to suitable spawning habitat up river.
When we catch a fish, they literally fight for their lives and consume an enormous amount of energy in the process. With all salmon once they enter fresh water, they are not going to get a chance to restore the energy that they have consumed while being caught and released so they will be tapping into energy supplies that they desperately need to successfully reproduce. Even the best handled salmon have a diminished chance at spawning when in the rivers once released. A poorly handled salmon chances are reduced even more. However, this doesn't mean that all salmon caught and released wont spawn but some wont and their chances are reduced.
There is some research that has been done that strongly supports this argument and I encourage you to dig around and find it.
Thanks for the awesome question and let me know if you have anymore,
      Take care,
      Captain Quinn

bbq has it's rewards , lots of Coho, so don't worry about keeping a few, "use the two stick nets" & release gently while still close to water.

Coho is the hardest hitting species of Pacific Salmon, ---go with flys always if you can unless your a meat fisher, which is cool, however to have a nice Coho on your fly is the ultimate in Salmon fishing, maybe all fishing.. Cheers --PS-- they are delicious (do not over cook , bbq rare & OH MY ! )

Hey captain Quinn, I have never fly fished but I've wanted to get try it, since I live here in Florida the majority of the fish I catch are bass and snakeheads is there any fly rod and reel that you can recommend that would be under 50 usd?

There isn't too much that you can buy for 50$. Typically a fly setup with a good disc drag reel will cost you 200-300$ at the lower quality end. Really good rods will be upwards of 1 grand.
