I’m 56. I heard Midnight Mushrumps when it came out and it’s been one of my most important musical touchstones ever since. Thank you, this means a lot a lot to some of us.
The juxtaposition of music so wonderfully eclectic and medieval sounding with the musicians reading their music off iPads and MacBooks. Who said young and old can’t co-exist? They should listen to Gryphon often. Great gig.
When you are normally going to a record store looking for hard rock/Metal albums but happen across a Treason LP and buy it thinking it looks like a hard rock album cover for a band you never heard of. An unexpected expansion of music taste but a welcomed one.
Absolutely extraordinary and completely unique, they are truly one of a kind.I first heard this back in 75 when I was 14 years old.Couldn't believe it then and still can't now.Where in the world do you learn how to play a krummhorn anyway? I couldn't think of anything sounding more authentically medieval.Anyone who doesn't believe in time travel has never heard these amazing gentlemen play.
I think that they (or some of them at least) are Royal College of Music graduates. I would imagine they studied Renaissance instruments and music. There was a bit of Tielman Susato influence there. I had their album ( I may still have it) Midnight Mushrumps. One of the tracks was the backing music for the Old Vic production of The Tempest with Gielgud as Prospero. It was a magical performance. I won't forget it. It was 1975. I was a fifth former.
First heard Gryphon in my UK university days in the 1970s. Was sad when they first broke up, but never knew they had re-formed, and certainly never expected to find this gem here in Australia so many years later. An absolute joy to see and hear. Wonderful music
Hearing Kemp's Jig in the late 70s, I think, turned me on to medieval music. I then went on to study the lute for 10 years. It was all a joy! Thanks, guys. Do you still drink down 'the dog'!
First heard albums of Gryphon as a teenager back in the late 70s. Have played their albums to anyone who would listen Never thought I’d get to see them ‘live’. What a treat.
Gosh, this YT discovery sends one of the biggest smiles, biggest crops in my throat and such a sheer BIG delight of joy through my musical veins. Never expected to see this by one of my alltime cult fav bands ever.
I loved Gryphon alongside David Munrow and the Consort of Musicke, who were more on the "classical" side of things. Musicianship wise, there was nothing in it. The early 70s was a great time for British folk and folk rock, Fairport, Steeleye, Lindisfarne etc. Gryphon fitted in there somewhere.
BTW Does Graeme Taylor still appear with the Albion Band, and Ashley Hutchings ? Does the Albion Band still exist ? ( I'm a bit out of touch, here in France. )
I was 17 in 1979, huge fan. I saw the name Dave Oberlé in Melody Maker ads dept. I rang him, can we do an interview for our 'school magazine'? Met him in Hyde Park, lovely fella, great interview. Gave me Richard Harvey's number. Rang him, went to his house in Surbiton, interviewed him, most gracious too and still a mighty recorder player. Hryphon were always unique
Here we all are, fans and group alike, all these years later. A real pleasure as always to hear tracks that coloured my long-lost teen years, alongside the more commercial stuff of the day. Thanks to you the band for sharing this marvellous performance.
What a great surprise!! First time I see a good quality video of a concert from Gryphon; delicious!! I love and still hear often their classic albums from the 70s, all of them master works; even when my favorite is "Red Queen to Gryphon Three". And their most recent album "Reinvention" is also very good. Hopefully they will keep playing and making wonderful music as they do. Please, publish this material in a bluray or dvd... Thanks a lot for so much marvelous music!
i had this on the tip of my tongue!!! my first time hearing this (am a fan of "Gentle Giant", "Jethro Tull", "Renaissance" early "Genesis" (P.G. era) and i am absolutely in love with this!
Me and my friend met both Dave Oberle and then Richard Harvey when producing a prog rock magazine. We met Dave Oberle in Hyde Park in the gentle year of 1979. I doubt that either of them will remember... the magazine had two outings ! Happy, happier days.
Brilliant! A bunch of us were into Gryphon mid-70's when I was at Uni and they performed for us at (what was then) Lanchester Polytechnic in Rugby, either 1976 or 77. Sadly, the same night Kratwerk were playing at our Coventry site and most of the campus went. There were only about 50 of us to see Gryphon, but they put on a fantastic show and we had space to jig around the floor and really enjoy it. The next day, everyone who went to see Kraftwerk said it was terrible lol! Saw Gryphon again supporting Yes in Stoke On Trent in the 70's. Must try and get to a concert if you are still performing, once COVID-19 is over of course. Shame I just lived off Chapel Market in Islington in the late 70's too!
I remember my brother coming home from a Steeleye gig raving that the support band had blown them away. Yes, laydeezgemmun, that band was none other than a lil English band called… GRYPHON! Mushrumps will be playing at my funeral, but good luck collecting the royalties.
I stumbled upon Gryphon in 1982 as a 23 year old; too late then to have seen the band in all their youthful vitality. Until that is I found them on UA-cam, albeit a little further on in life! What an utter joy! For a non-musician like me, I can only marvel at the beauty of the sound that you guys create. You prove that recreating a sound live is a rare and difficult skill that few can achieve. You are masters of this skill! Thank you so much for making an old (young) man very happy. My sincere gratitude to you all.x
I will admit to being something of a Gryphon virgin, although I do know Graeme from one of his ventures in the past. I am staggered. This is musical magic. I missed it all. To be rectified extremely quickly.
First time I saw Gryphon was after they appeared on Magpie at East Mein pub....Have the first two LP's,the third one on cassette and now this latest one on CD.A bit of a change since 1973.....👍🇪🇦🇬🇧

This is quality guys and what a GREAT! treat to all Gryphonites! That was a spectacular performance by you all and I only got to see you at the Robin 2 in this year and the year before. Really enjoyed watching this just and will watch a lot more times too and Thank You...
Awesome! My brother sent this link to me. We were both fans back in the day. Unfortunately, we didn't discover the band until after their US tour. I gave them a fair bit of radio play at WUVT (Virginia Tech's station).
Thank you gentlemen for the lovely and masterful songs! I am thoroughly enjoying them in America, and wish I could come see you in England! Your music has been a constant companion for me while i work on editing my novel!
I was walking my dog few weeks ago and a house had put some old cassettes out front for people to have.. The only interesting looking one was Gryphon, Red Queen to Gryphon Three so I took it and lo and behold its in Spotify and sounds great on Echo Dot 5 speaker. I hadnt heard of Gryphon before and to me it sounded like Gong/King Crimson early stuff.. 👍👍👍
So great to be able to enjoy this concert, thank you for putting it up. I've been listening to you since my childhood in the '70's, I remember having a pretend medieval disco to your first album! Took my young ones to see you at Southampton a few years back, my son now has a crumhorn... :)
Joyful and life-affirming. And as if this gift of a film weren’t enough, I find on Wikipedia that Harvey and Davie were also ‘The Banned’, whose great punk-riff single ‘Little Girl’ was always a favourite. Talk about versatility. It’s taken me 43 years to make that connection. Isn’t the internet wonderful!
This is everything! I've stumbled across Gryphon only 6 months ago through progressive rock group on fb. Wish I knew about them earlier but glad I'm here
The last time I saw Gryphon performing was nearly 46 years ago, supporting Yes, and they seem to have matured well without any loss of dexterity. A masterful and delightful performance!
And what a wonderful gift this is! Since early seventies I've been a big fan of progrock, but for unclear reasons missed Gryphon in those earlier years. By pure coincidence I stumbled into your beautiful music when, earlier this century, I visited Burman's Musik, a very old (almost 100 years) music shop in Umea, North Sweden. This guy was selling second hand albums and convinced me to take the "Gryphon" album home. It proves you're never too old to learn about more good music. I really loved your performance, you all look great (and well dressed :-)) and I can see that you still love what you have been - still are - doing. Hopefully next time I will be there as well. A wholehearted thanks, keep it up, stay well and warm greetings from another old guy from Leiden the Netherlands.

If you like this, might I recommend a foray into the back-catalogues of the French prog-folk band Malicorne, with whom Brian Gulland appeared from time to time (beware, though; I love most of their stuff, but their style developed broadly over time)? Also, the band Pyewackett, who also used a range of instruments to preserve renaissance, early baroque and folk song in the early 80s.
