''I like beautiful melodies telling me terrible things.'' - Tom Waits
The Absolutely Greatest Poet, Singer, Actor of the gone century. Hopefully His Kind of Culture and Art will continue and help us to survive the next may be hard decades for mankind. Tom W. you did all to help us away!
My late husband was a singer/songwriter/ keyboard player. We drank a lot of bourbon, and smoked a lot of weed to the great Tom Waits, but I don't think I understood until years later what a genius he is.
I see Tom Waits. I hit the like button.
It's not rocket appliances.
I wish I could like this comment more than once. Oh wait, I just did.
I once went to a piano bar tribute night to Tom Waits and fortunately/unfortunately ran into some friends and it became a night from a Tom Waits song! Wish I could go back and sit closer to the piano!
King of cool. Never listened to music the same way after hearing Tom.
No, Dean Martin was and always will be the king of cool. Mr Waits is much more than that few words could ever describe.
saw him twice too young to see him in this era but thanks to UA-cam I can go back in time
*I've just come here to join the crowd, 'cause I have some time to... kkkkk kiiill !!!!*
Genius performance. Crazy poetry ✨
I was there... I was 15... really impressed.
was there as well but I was 24
I'm glad to know that fourteen days before I was born, this man was grooving so hard.
He looks so young. I saw him in Sydney, got given a ticket for my birthday. Best present ever. he had base and sax with him.
"I'm getting harder than Chinese algebra." I've been using that line for 45 years.
Friend, I hope it always works for you.
This was absolutely amazing. I also have a lot of admiration for the artists that work with Waits, who often get a bit buried behind his wonderful crazy voice.
I thought Teddy Edwards absolutely killed in this. I was really amazed by his playing. And Greg Cohen's bass was really intelligently played, understated, and unobtrusive. These players really boosted the act.
Agree the bass walks like a strange dance perfectly under Waits, not clashing whatsoever
Thanks for sparing me having to look up who the bassist was
I can't be the only s.o.b round these here parts who wishesTom would go thru his god-damn archives and release all such classic live performances on dawg-gone CD and vinyl, dagnabbit!
Damn. Must have been in the air then. A few months before this performance my high school mate and I threw down the most abstract maniacal poetry we could come up with, pounded at a recoiling upright with ferocity, screeching to the limits of our falsettos, etc etc. Tom, our spirit animal, though we didn't know him at the time.
Saw him at Olympia in Dublin on the 81 tour.Been a fan ever since.A wonderful genius.
This era of Tom was the best.
I experienced a show of that tour in NZ 1981/82 it was a mind-blowing experience, unforgettable. And the saxophone oozed the bluesiest lines.
Tom - my friend when i really need one
One of the greatest musicians and entertainers!
I saw this show in Cleveland, I believe it was the same year. Great memories
That transition from 'Invitation To The Blues' to 'Eggs and Sausage' is one of my favourite things in music.
What a trenendous artist, my God, he is a giant!! I`m argentinian and believe me I got just crazy!
Blame God for being crazy. Thank Tom for his music.
Te quiero ahre
It helps if you are crazy to appreciate Tom.
I believe you
Oh my!
What a performance.
Would have loved to have attended, and my Gratitude
with Much Respect to Jan Doets for posting.
My world is a much better place with this video in it.
it's a pleasure, W.L. !
I was at this performance since I live in Montreal and the jazz fest is such a huge thing here.....outdoors and free to walk around and have beer after beer....he was great!!
Tom channels Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, Jack Kerouac and Thomas Pynchon along with his own deep blues funk. There is sill hope for the American narrative... How he is so dark and so light at the same time still amazes and delights me. I have been a devoted fan since the late 70s and he never fails to inspire me.
Thanks to him and Kathleen cuz they are are great partnership.
Have you read “Trout Fishing in America”? It’s the same kinda dark portrait of the underbelly with the same irreverent tone.
Bukowski comes to mind
yes absolutely true@@TheRealTomWendel
Saw him in Winnipeg '76 and Miami, this tour right here. Winnipeg just flat loved him and Miami was struck dumb. Double delight.
I have a soundboard recording -- absolutely gem quality -- of a Tom Waits concert from 1977 in Willimantic CT that was supposed to have been broadcast on the radio and never was. I copied the tape from a radio station I worked at in 1977. It is, far and away, the best concert he ever gave, and I have heard a lot of his concerts. He told little stories in between each song and each one was hysterical. I have the concert on two cassette tapes. I must upload it some day.
PLEASE do !!
I second that, I'd love to hear it!!
OH DEAR LORD PLEASE DO THAT (would you mind messaging me if you do?)
Dude, don't hesitate come on ;)
ukkfayooyay please
I love Tom Waits your voice your songs are thoughtful full of life and originality. I am from Brazil I rarely like white north American music but this is outstanding art. I apreciatte it.
Saw him on this tour in Dublin '81. I was a Waits addict and this was a dream gig. Double Bass, sax and the genius in person.
He Always gets the Best Bands...That Says Something about his Musicianship...and a Respect Level...He is Awesome!!!
Tom Waits Rain Dogs
Long time overlooked artist for me finally explored in his beauty and agony, soulfull elegy to jazz poetry and performance brilliance. Thanks God for him and you for this video.🎷🤩
That's a beautiful thing to say.
The best show I ever saw was Leon Redbone opening for Tom Waits-never heard of either of'em. Changed my life...
Santa Cruz 1978?...
@@ronzbronz6043 Dallas, the time frame sounds just about right. Saw Leon a couple more times but never Tom.
ohhhh.... that lucky audience! Superb tapestry of poetry, rhythm, melody!
Wow! Always just ‘wow!’
I'm 85 years into this adventure. Went down the waits long ago and can't 37:26 find the way out.
I'd love to see him in concert again.
What a show.
Makes me calm
Jealous
Mike O'Flannigan
You'll see him
Как же он крут! Он ведь не только гениальный музыкант, но и потрясающий актер.❤❤❤
thank god for tom waits the soundtrack of my dark lfe
My late husband and I fell in love listening to Waits. He is an incomparable and mysterious. We saw him at Massey Hall in Toronto. We brought our own furniture.
Absolut genial der Künstler. Bin schon 30 Jahre ein fan von Ihm.
I saw Tom at the Convocation Hall, in Toronto just a few months before this performance. Been a total fan ever since....
Mesmerising genius. Timeless giant.
1st time watching this show&.... I'm speechless....wow.
That tango though. Loving that tango ❤️
Made me cry. especially "waltzing matilda". Hope I see him before I die.
+Steve Carr; Go and Do just that! Chase that idea SC; you will tear up and let go for pure joy and appreciation of this legend. I did and his advice to me was "Don't Let It Get To YOU!" (typical)
Few things are as beautiful as that song. On the Nickle is another one.
@@musicloverkathy I like that tune too. You have great taste in music. My favorite from heartattack and vine is Ruby's Arms. Call me an old softie. I don't give a shit.
@@normanwebb3806 He already got to me. I bought a couple of CD's in the early 90's namely John Lee Hooker and Tom Waits and the guy at the counter said " you ain't gonna buy no whiskey tonignt are ya??.
Thank the Gods for his music. Damn it was cool.
try as they might, no one will ever be this cool
Kieth Richards gets somewhat close to him
As good as gets - A very soulful performance as only Tom can do it. "A wound that will never heal" - Thanks for the music - Juiceman
a pleasure !
Wow, he's really kicking ass on that tango. Fantastic set. Genius delivery of song, poetry and character.
Thanks for sharing, really good, I ❤️Jazz ‼️The place I went out for a beer in the 90s, often had Tom Waits on their stereo, he's one of a kind ‼️
Waits: "Anyone who has ever played a piano would really like to hear how it sounds when dropped from a 12th-floor window."
You're an idiot if you dont like this.
Thanks an blast from the past. 😮❤
Simply amazing. I'm awed.
I"m going to watch this over and over again. ty for posting and ty Tom Waits.
god i wish i was older than 1 year old when that happened so i could have been there...
and I wish i was born
awesome, a century artist
Amazing Tom!
That's the best version of Tom Traubert's blues I've heard yet
Very unique and beautiful voice
+lillovebuglily you CAN NOT modify "unique" with an adjective!
+Jeff .WEISS I just did so..
Great performance!
There's a time at a inferior bar in Beijing I lighted a cigg and sang ol' 55 just like him. I still remember that moment when no one understood what I was doing but I know that's the thing.
Did Dylan or Waits ever pass comment about the other's poetry? We sure can't compare their musical styles, but their lyrics are both very special.
Best video on youtube .......ever
Thank you 54
This was done 2 days before i was born...Crazy..
happy birthday !
wow, thank you for sharing this friend
A major 20th Century American poet.
I saw this tour at The Victoria Apollo, London. Apparently he left the drummer behind after a fall out. It was the most amazing show. Still have my ticket stub.
Today is my birthday and its also tom waits im from montreal so this feels feeting
Waits in transition, in total command of everything he accomplished before and demonstrating hints of what was to come. Obviously his later stylistics had been brewing all along. Originally Waits was seen as a throwback, a guy just trying to resurrect dead styles, but he was an iconoclast and visionary all along, assembling a mulligan stew of various elements, continually adding new ones to taste, never the same thing all the time. Pinning Waits down to any preconceived notion is futile. This is one of the most interesting and most telling live performances of his I’ve seen.
Saw Tom Waits perform around this time at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto. Had the same hat and the same commitment to smoking cigarettes throughout the show. Might have been the same tour. Just amazing to hear him live. Caught two more shows from him after that including the Franks Wild Years show at Massey Hall. Absolute musical genius.
At that show as well buddy
Fantastic
Nice upload
Well done J. D. Thanks for putting together a wonderful set of videos by my favourite artist The Great Tom Waits!
Wow! What a great concert! "Tango" is now #1 on my earworm list. Thanks so much for posting this, Jan, you're a solid dude.
... What about 29 Dollars? - My favorite....
A lot of it sounded like tango till they're sore to me (wouldn't be recorded for another 4 years)... wonder if he'd been working on it then
Thanks for posting. Tom helped teddy Edwards get an album released by singing a couple of songs on it. Worth checking out. Mississippi Lad
Only one: Tom Waits.
Absolutely incredible
I love this. Thank you for uploading, Jan.
Waits is the man. Great lyrics an always a great band with him
+Mike O'Flannigan Lyrics.. `The Piano has Been Drinking` still makes me chuckle!
That version of Tom Traubert's Blues is incredible.
Thanks, Callum, I have added to the title.
a Tom Waits tune is alike a little movie
Man the tango
******* When you talk to someone about music and mention Tom Waits and they say "Who?" and you just smile & leave.
+GuildF40 Or... perhaps you could use that as an opportunity to share the magic that is Tom Waits with that person? :) (Relevant comic - xkcd.com/1053/ )
Right? Smiling and leaving is a hipster thing to do, man. There was a time you didn't know Tom Waits, Guild. You aren't somehow "better" for being in love with Grandaddy Tom.
Whenever I mention Tom, and someone says "Who's that?" Tom's face is everywhere in film. So I pull out my phone and go to Google Images. Everyone always goes "Oh, HIM! He's a musician?"
Then it's just a matter of picking the song Tom used to catch you. "Blue Valentines" is the one Tom used to shoot a hole through my skull.
"You smile and leave." What a hipster thing to do. Condescending jerk.
don't call him a jerk, plz. I agree with u, a 100 %. But I'm sure there was some little second u thought the same way as he did, just because u were proud of knowing "the magic, that is tom waits" while someone else didn't. don't run the risk of being a condescending jerk yourself, bro. ;-) and @ GuildF40: listen, to what they have to say! showing and sharing is better than leaving and just smiling 4 yourself! Smile together with other people to his beautiful music and the vibes he communicates. I'm sure you understood that by now, I mean, your comment is from two years ago ...
Have a good one, guys!
@Alfadason, I agree, that is exactly the way I took it to mean. I've asked many (everyone) and they didn't know the name, I do know they have to know the song covered by the "Eagles" written and performed by Mr Waits. I am 67 and believe he deserves the Mr in front of his name lol. Such a mind he has, "Ole 55" is my favorite and "Saturday Night".
I kinda get a kick cu he's the coolest fuckin thing ever, and im cool enough to know to be in the fandom
Greg, you are my hero! I love all those 'little' things you do that are lost on most.
Genius
¡Espléndido! Gran músico y excepcional intérprete.
13:55
Tom: **Writes romantic piano song for girl**
Girl: "I think it's missing something.."
Tom: **THUD** "Will this do?"
How has this video only 337.387 views?! How is it that people don't just blast it out their stereo via youtube every (other) day? If I was in the worst mood in the world: it would'nt be anything, "Mr. Seigal" couldn't get me out of... especially with that Invitation to the Blues/ Eggs and Sausage Medley before that. Or the "Pasties and a G-string"-song... man just SO cuttin' right to the chase (hopin' I used that right, English is my second language)... but HELL yeah ... abso-f**kin-lutely amazing, the whole thing. I'm overwhelmed, just every single time....!
AWESOME!!!
23:15 Best version of Eggs and Sausage
Oh yes
best video online
This is fucking great!
too cool !!!!!
When I was 16 living in Montreal, I recorded the audio of this show from a TV show after my friend's sister saw it Live and loved it. Listened to this tape literally hundreds of time on my Sony Walkman. If you have the whole video please please upload it. One of my favorites from that show is Annie's back in town. I honestly don't know many of the studio versions of these songs LOL. Carl.
I just died and went to heaven!
oh, AND he's an incredible actor, just so ye know
I think this show was on Dutch tv by the VPRO boadcasting company a long time ago. I used to have it on VHS tape, but it's been long lost. Thank you. :-)
Coolest person on the planet!
3 song in is pasties and a g string, not till the money runs out
Thanks, Tony !
+Tony Leachman may as well be....Think about it it ya been to a strip club.
I always used to wonder how he got the pianos perfectly out of tune on his records, turns out he just beats the hell of them. Lol. I all seriousness though, it's mesmerizing to watch him play the piano.
That's entertainment!
Clive Richardson thats a show man ;tango cabaret circus .....the arena for a musical beast...... greatness.
my BBQ smells like his voice
His voice sounds like it was soaked in bourbon, dragged through gravel and sat in a smoke house overnight... (Not my words but I love it)
THAT is BBQ that I would enjoy! (I worked with Bill Arnold (Perry,Missouri/ Blues Hog BBQ).HIS BBQ SINGS TOO!!!
Mike O'Flannigan z
Joe Sanderson ....ah! you use "napalm bbq"??
