The way he turns up the corners of his mouth when he's addressing Spock is literally the most subtle sinister gesture I've ever seen.
It's a smile of disrespect!!
Didn't even know such thing even existed.
Cumberbatch is such a great KHAN!!
He moves around that cell like a caged animal, never skipping a beat on his lines and it just adds to his menace. Masterclass acting folks!
Read my mind. He seemed like a lantern fish and shark combined. Swimming around the tank with a angered menacing look on his face, with a look like he wants to kill anybody who views him
@@martialartssoldier249 He was like a SHARK with ICE in its veins. An APEX predator. Efficient. Merciless. the rawest of raw power.
This just goes to show that Benedict Cumberbatch would have been amazing in the cast of scar for the lion king reboot.
Jay Jacob You have seen Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle haven’t you? Cumberbatch played Shere Khan Perfectly!
Yeah seriously where th was he when they were casting the lion king???
Nailed it.
I was surprised they didn't ask him.
I mean, it's Hamlet. haha
The slight tilting of his head down after he says "Khan" is such a small but powerful gesture.
That's what I've been saying! It's an insane attitude shift, like he knows his name has meaning, no bullshit, no facade, no pretending to help, pure Khan leaked through.
My name...is...Khaaan.... ....
Highlights his pride and superiority. Also a great example of a classically trained actor whose physical gestures and motions complement his performance. The rest of the scene showcases it well (the pacing, the turning of his head, the way he looks Spock up and down while insulting him, etc.).
Khaaaaaaaaannn?????
Ben @ Khan is deadly drop dead damn good looking..every breathe every word he utter are like melting butter..satiny silky smoooooth..i could die
Benedict has the touch that old actors have, to change a scene with a simple gesture.
I don’t care what the critics say; Benedict Cumberbatch DOMINATED as Khan
This movie was critically acclaimed
Cumberbatch dominates in pretty much everything he is in.
Yeah actually critics totally dug his performance. This movie was actually praised widely by critics and audiences, but now it's cool to hate on the movie now for some odd reason.
He dominates as everything
Tobytyty101 I still love the film, it’s my favourite Star Trek film and I only was aware that some didn’t like this film last week
This was the first time I saw Benedict cumberbatch and he stole every moment he was on the screen. What an actor 👍
Cam Novak : 👍👍👏👏❗️. I couldn’t agree with you more. He is superb in a great way.
Me too, this was the first time seeing Benedict and he immediately gained my attention and respect. Dude out acted everyone. He stole every scene he was in
*He looks Scary & he just looks like normal Cumberbatch.. But he's his acting carries it all..*
*No makeup no prosthetic..*
*Just brilliant acting*
Such a bold move opting not to use makeup. Im still am in disbelief that what I am seeing an Northern Indian Sikh appear effortlessly & naturally as an European Saxon white person.
I was on the edge of my seat hoping he breakout singing Camptown races and start cakewalking around the cell like the masters before him.
@@acidBONEZ the british colonized India, I think the intent to have him be a british actor who is playing a violent genocidal tyrant from the eugenics wars is right on the money.

That sounds... oddly specific.

Captain Kirk, I've come to bargain
lol
My favorite line from Khan in that movie was "my crew is my family...is there anything you would not do for your family?"
MoltenUprising MK4000 : but he takes that feeling to another level entirely, a really menacing level!
Damn he fights for his family and still lost the fight, he should take notes from Vin...
That was meant to manipulate Kirk into showing compassion toward Khan
Ohh man, I love Benedict's acting....
HulkVahkiin : he is superb! His ‘Kahn’ is so very menacing!
The only thing better than Benedict Cumberbatch's acting is his voice.

So true anything he says sounds like a poetry ✨
"Intellect alone is useless in a fight, Mr. Spock. You you couldn't break a rule. How would you be expected to break bone?"
You're going to wish you hadn't said that later Khan.
Let's be real though. Khan was beating the living crap out of Spock before Uhura distracted him.
Like Khan wasn't about to squash Spock's head before Uhura came
yeah, that comment aged poorly.
I do agree. People think genius equals intellect, but extreme high IQ makes you 100% HALF genius. I don't remember what I did 22 days ago, but I remember what I did 10 years ago on a xmas party. I don't remember 5 number 1 hit songs from 2 years ago, but I remember that song from childhood over 2 decades ago. I remember because these memories are laced with an emotion. Athletes break records not just by muscle, but willpower, hope believe, determination, these are all emotions. A human being is at it's strongest when cognition, emotions and the body are in balance. The ancient greeks already figured this out 2000 years ago, which is why not only did they philosophize and 'think all day' but spend great amount on balancing emotions through catharsis, and training their body and respect it. We emphasized our pre-frontal cortex in modern times, which is special yes, but it's pushing our emotions aside. You will see the greatest minds of our times are not just thinkers, but more often than not optimists and people that are also in tune with their emotions. Intellect is not what defines a person, it's a tool. A sharp knife will be a better tool than a dull knife yes, but a chef that is focused and emotionally stable, will make the best cut either way.
In context, Khan was imbalanced eventually in the inverse. He biased towards emotion, namely pride, which was his downfall. Balance is key. In the same way Spock succeeded, because he let his vulcan bias towards cognition drop in favor of emotion, which made him more balanced. Kirk and Spock are eventually each other's yin and yang, where they both balance out each other's bias (kirk being naturally biased to emotion and impulse)
@@xdarrenx you are confusing definitions of a genius and a professional.

Cumberbatch should’ve won multiple awards for this masterful portrayal. Probably the best scene in the entire film. 👌🏽
Probably the dumbest scene in any Star Trek movie ever... and that is saying something.
Honestly he was just telling the truth:

I really badly wanted Kirk to say “Khan, I’ve come to bargain.”
The only problem was the Doctor Strange movie didn’t came out yet.
Lame
yeah super lame. this Khan performance of his deserve an Oscar, Dr Strange, No.

1:06 i vividly remember a wave of gasps in the theater.
jeff lockaby : love your description, so very accurate.
John Harrison: My Name is Kahn!
Kirk: Oh we're using our made up names, then i'm Peter Parker...
Lol
This scene and revelation was so unexpected that it really thrilled me to the bone when I saw it the first time. It was at the movie theater watching it with my teenage son. At that very moment when Benedict Cumberbatch said the name Khan I said "Oh my God! It's Khan!" My son heard me, but since he was young and not knowing the history looked at me and and asked "what is it dad?" I was so into the movie that wasn't able to answer him until it was over. That moment was awesome, and sharing it with my son made it extra special.
Kirk: Who?
Khan: Khan man, legendary tyrant. Guys?
Jordan Herkowski i see what you did there.....GOTG anyone?
Forget it.
Starlord man.....
Khan: “What should we do next? Something good? Something bad? Bit of both? Something bad.”
Benedict can deliver his lines just perfectly whatever he does and in many accents too
"You Mr. Spock, you can't even break a rule, how would you be expected to break bone?" - You will soon find out.
After Uhura helps Spock you mean? Because looking at the movie Khan was 5 seconds away from cracking Spock's head open before Uhura came in to save him
“You can’t break a rule how can you break bone?”
You’re gonna regret that later Khan
I swear Benedict Cumberbatch is good in any role.
Damn.....acting
I'm in here for "The Voice".... :-)
Khan,your Sherlock is showing
I remember this scene at the theaters. The audience went crazy when he said his name was Kahn. I asked someone about it after the movie and he told me to watch Star Trek 2. When I saw the actual title, I was like “ok”. After watching it, I understood why the older people were so in an uproar about it. Nostalgia.
That......and the fact that this movie was written by children that know nothing about creative writing.
Nostalgia. That's it.
According to the official novelisation, Khan's overall muscle density is at least 131 pounds per cubic foot which is almost the same density as concrete; little wonder then that he could crush a man's skull with his bare hands; not to mention the fact that his heart and lungs would have to be abnormally large and strong in order to be able to supply enough blood and oxygen to his muscles
A genetically engineered mutate Human psychopath from the Eugenic Wars. Designed to become the perfect weapon.
Why would they have to be larger? That's only if they're the same quality meat as our meat. By definition, his meat is more advanced, so it can perform better using the same amount of mass.
Masterful display of feral body language contrasted with cultured speech, layered over barely-restrained savagery. Such command of subtle nuance.
Hm.
He did really amazing as doctor strange and Sherlock but this is on a whole other level
My name is KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!
Pleased to meet you. Khan. My name is Kirk and this is Spock. And since this is an "alternate universe," where we've never met before, your delivery of that line seems unnecessarily dramatic. .
Well he was the evil dictator of millions back in the past. Back then his name meant something. It's kind of tough to let go...
*I've ... hurt you.*
@@oxmys I much prefer Montalban's straightforward delivery in "Space Seed." He says it like its his name. He doesn't feel the need to attach melodramatic significance to the name. It is a pretty common name, after all.
Benjamin Fitzgerald : everyone feels strongly about this; in one way or another, but when I watched his original appearance on TOS back in the 1960s with my dad.....he seemed more in control than he did in the movie: ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn”. In that movie he let the taunting words of Kirk drive out his superior knowledge, making him a chump! Nope didn’t like that. I can’t see Kirk (Chris Pine) doing that to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Kahn. That new Kahn would have just looked at Kirk as if he were a flea.
1:19 "Because I am better."
"At what?"
"Everything."
I dunno why, but that cracks me up 🤣🤣🤣
Kirk: Why would a Starfleet Admiral go to a three hundred year old frozen man for help?
Khan: Because I'm better...
Kirk: At what?
Khan: Everything.
Me: That is such a Sherlock comment!
Smaug: But it Matters not. Marcus's war will be his failure. The darkness is coming. It will spread to every corner of the universe

Just like every comment here, I will give props to benedict, he did a fantastic job. Despite the movies poor cohesiveness and direction he was genuinely the star of the movie. His portrayal and his emotion and temperance really brought out the idea of khan. He will never replaced the original khan of course but this portrayal is very unique. After seeing this film and twist multiple times now, I am curious about what it would have been like if they'd done an original film with him as John Harrison instead of a WoK reboot/redo
God, watching this now and only just realizing how the entire movie has shaky cam, even the dialogue scenes.
If Benedict Cumberbatch, was playing any other character than Khan Noonien Singh, this would be considered a very good performance. As it is, he’s always going to come up second best to Ricardo Montalban
Yeah, there's a part of me that wished he really was just John Harrison. He was already intriguing before the Khan reveal.
Indeed.
damn that voice. powerful AF
They explained in the comic that, as part of the whole "John Harrison" identity, Admiral Marcus had Khan's face & voice surgically altered so that he wouldn't match historical records. All they needed was a single line in the movie pointing that out and it would have avoided all the negative comparisons to Ricardo Montalban. Just a slight change to the dialogue in this scene, for example, would have explained everything seamlessly:
KHAN: John Harrison is a fiction your Admiral Marcus came up with with he revived me. My NAME is Khan. Khan Noonien Singh.
KIRK: We have records of Khan Noonien Singh. You look nothing like him.
KHAN: Marcus had my appearance and voice altered so that your precious Federation computers would not recognize me.
KIRK: What would Admiral Marcus want with a 300-year-old tyrant?
BAM! Continue dialogue as before, done deal... PLUS you just explained away one of the biggest criticisms we fans could come up with.
0megacron : 👍👍👏👏❗️. what a marvelous way to have explained that (for those who were so bothered about his appearance). I am an original fan of TOS, as I watched the series in the 1960s with my dad. It didn’t bother me because not everyone looks like what their ethnic background would indicate. Recessive DNA/genes can pop up in any ethnic background. Plus, he stated that he (and the others like him) had been created to be ‘superior in all ways’. If those that tampered with his genetic/DNA profile were of the belief that they were better than other ‘Earthlings’, wouldn’t they have given him their own idea of superiority?!
That is very clever. Makes me wonder why they didn't do it, either, and save all fans, young and old, the trouble. As for negative comparisons to Ricardo Montalban - different moviemaking eras. That's about it. Though I was like "that's taking it too far" when some other commenter said something to the effect of 'take the role the great Ricardo Montalban immortalized and give it to Benedict Cumberbatch, the whitest boy in England.' That's going too far.
I think we all already predicted that Benedict Cumberbatch is going to be playing Khan before this movie ever came out. Sure JJ Abrams kept denying it saying they were false rumors, but that's just so he doesn't have to admit we were all right with our prediction!
I loved this movie
Star Trek will alway's live on
Ivan Z : I certainly hope so.......but only if they don’t turn it into some dark, depressing crap. If it’s to go to the ‘Mirror’ universe, that might be fun to watch! Especially if there are some quick peeks at what is happening at the same time in our universe!
I know this movie is a Swiss cheese mess of a screenplay but I genuinely love his performance and always have
“You can even break a rule, how can you expect to break bone.” Damn.
Benedict was so delicious in this movie. That stare, that prowl, wow
How did Marcus know the exact cryotube to open?
Mike Van Roy : uhm, good question!

Into Darkness is in my top 10 all time fave movie list.

Me and one of my best mates from school were forced to sit through Star Trek as kids by our dads, it’s something we had in common and always used to joke about.

Very good memory
Never watched the original series or movies. Knew very little about characters except for some names. Saw the new movie in theaters when it first came out in 2009 and enjoyed it.
