Tinnitus | Hyperacusis | Sound sensitivity | Tinnitus after Vaccine | Tinnitus after Covid | Story
Tinnitus is a condition in which you hear a sharp "beep" in your ears. Hyperacusis is one in which ears become sensitive and sounds of regular environment become painful.
It's been almost a year since I got Tinnitus & Hyperacusis. It all began after I got my first shot last year (July 2021). The going has been difficult, but my situation has gotten better and I was advised to share my story so others could possibly learn from it.
Here's is a couple of articles I wrote about it:
    www.nishantmit...
    www.nishantmit...
You can ask your questions in comments and I'd try to earnestly answer them all. If you're in the same boat, I wish you all the luck in the world. My only hope is that you get absolutely okay, very soon!
Here's my genuine thanks and recommendation for Dr. Ram Pravesh (Dwarka Sec 6, New Delhi, India). He's a really nice person and a genuine audiologist who could help you in your journey. I'd also like to thank Dr. Munish Taneja for being sincere and honest in his approach, and connecting me to Dr. Ram Pravesh.
To support my music, you could go to my website (www.nishantmit...) and download my songs. You could also find "Nishant Mittal" on the streaming platform of your choice and check out my music.
    All the best!

Ever since I've uploaded this video, I've received over 1000 comments and 100s of personal messages. People suffering from this condition often ask for help and treatments they could follow to get better. I try to help everyone to the best of my abilities and my suggestions have also helped a large number of people feel significantly better. I'm writing it here so it could help everyone:
    Please take:
    Neubion Forte, thrice a day
Vitamin D3, once a day (with milk)
    Gingko Biloba, once a day.
Taking the above for a couple of weeks should make you feel better significantly. Post that, reduce the Vitamin D intake to once in 3 days, and then to once a week. Avoiding Caffeine, spicy food and Sodium is also very important for your recovery. It's very important for you to protect yourself from loud noises. People dealing with hyperacusis could definitely try going to an audiologist as that helped me significantly. I'm feeling better, touch wood. Quite recently I was dealing with fullness in my ears, which was really bothersome. But then I resumed taking the above meds once again and felt better. I must note that I feel scared of the fact that my hearing is at constant risk, and for good reason. To avoid any further sad outcomes, I wear ear plugs whenever I'm at the risk of getting exposed to loud sounds. They help. I hope you feel better soon. All the best.
I make music with a lot of heart. If you wish to support my music, you could visit my website (linked in description) and buy my songs. Alternatively, you could support with your likes, comments, shares, reels, etc. on my music. I'll appreciate that.
Thank you. And once again, all the best.

I came back to see how you are doing today. I'm glad you were able to go back on supplements and get relief again. I also wear ear protection on me. I keep a headset. I got Skullcandy brand. I keep small pieces of cotton in my ears. Not pushed inside. It helps a lot too. Thanks for the update.

Tinnitus and Hyperacusis should really be cured soon because they are terrible conditions. They are such terrible conditions, probably related to the brain. Modern medicine is still completely underdeveloped. We need to keep raising awareness, like this young man did in this excellent video, and give money to research labs if we can afford it.

I've had tinnitus for many years, which I've become accustomed to. But one day I just woke up with hyperacusis and my whole life just changed. My ENT just treated me for hearing loss and didn't take the noise sensitivity seriously. I had an MRI scheduled, but I've since postponed it after hearing all the horror stories. My volume threshold improved quickly over about 2 weeks, and I thought it would be okay to hang out with friends again, but that was a huge mistake. We were just watching TV, chatting, loud ac and a fan in the room. It wasn't all that uncomfortable, but the extended exposure to all that noise for an extended period of time set me all the way back to square one. I think finding an audiologist that truly understands what we're going through is very important. Finding support for this condition is tough because most will not understand what you're going through, or think you're exaggerating. It's frustrating and tiresome to always have to remind people of your situation. I'm glad you found help and hope I can get through this as well.

So sorry to hear that this has happened to you. I also have tinnitus and hyperacusis, and I've had the hyperacusis for about 5 years now. I developed it after a period of emotional abuse by my dad. It has only gotten worse with time and it's been really hard to accept that this is just my life now. And just coping with the fact that I feel like my life ended at 19. I also have a lot of other disabling health conditions. I'm unable to work and I stay home most of the time. It's really isolating and almost nobody can understand. But somehow I still have hope. Best wishes.

Hi Martin. Thank you for your comment. My 19 yr old daughter started to have extreme hyperacusis at the age of 8. In her case it was due to Marfan Syndrome, which means she is genetically missing collagen, so the connective tissue throughout her body is loose. The bones and tendons in her ears are loose and vibrate more and she can feel vibrations more through her body. We slowly learned how to live a sound-sensitive lifestyle and concentrate on what we can do, instead of what we can't do. We came up with routines and hand-signals. She reads, socializes on Discord, and is learning GIS to have an online job. It's not the end, it's just different.

Suffering from Hyperacusis and Tinnitus since June 2021, right after my first Covid shot (Pfizer in this case) - seen doctors across Canada and India, umpteen tests and they can’t find anything except that I’m a positive case of hyperacusis. Cognitive behavioural therapy and meditation hasn’t helped either. The tinnitus measured by the audiologist is a grade 4. This video and the comment section only helped reaffirm that I’m not alone in battling this.. nobody can hear or feel what I hear and go thru. And the only sound I wish to hear is that of silence..
Among half a dozen specialists there was just one, Dr. Sumeet a neurosurgeon at Lilavati Hosp. Bombay who could identify my illness. I live in Canada.

Been there brother! That too a few months before my final prof exams!! Mine was mostly noise induced and I even made it worse by attending a concert without wearing earmuffs. I was suicidal just like most of the sufferers in the beginning. Whenever I searched on internet with this regard, all I used to find was nothing but suicidal stories and dark memes. ENT people were of no help and trust me they have no clue about this f***ing condition!!! Habituation is something one should aim for rather than waiting for a miraculous cure. Tinnitus forum helped me a lot in coping up with my stress and anxiety. Your brain will eventually figure out ways and divert your attention from this annoying noise. Habituation is real and have faith in yourself. ❤️❤️

I agree with the thought that ENTs have no fucking clue about this. Which is strange because what else do they do?
I also agree with habituation. We learn to live with things, just as is the case for many other ailments. But I do believe this particular condition can get better from the roots, if we follow the few pointers I shared.
But yes, there's no miracle, only gradual recovery.

Part of that was letting go of things she could not do and concentrating on things she can do. It is a different lifestyle but it is not all bad. Some moments of hearing things other people miss are wonderful. Do not worry about being a burden on anyone. Just try to work out a system for now. Thank you for sharing... I have had tinnitus as I could remember and I treated it as a normal phenomenon especially since I only hear it super loud when it is really silent... Hyperacusis is a different story... It is so depressing... I got hyperacusis after I recovered from covid... My life and the way I see things changed... Being isolated from the world because of covid and after that another isolation has to be forced upon me... It's somehow debilitating, coz normal everyday sounds hurt my left ear so much and causes me a headache that won't go away with pain medication... Music has always been my solace... Whenever I am sad and needed to calm myself down i immerse myself in some good music... My hobbies are always playing musical instruments and I also sing in a church choir... I stopped listening and playing music and even singing coz whenever I hear a thing, the ringing starts and then later it'll feel like a pointed object is piercing inside my left ear and the pain will project to my left temple and the torture will start and will never go away for days... Yeah it is literally torture - a physical and mental torture that even wearing earphones terrify me... Sad part is, from where I came from, nobody really understands my condition coz it is not like any other common illness... Doctors misdiagnose and people see it as if it'll just disappear overnight after I think of it as nothing but the works of the brain... Thanks... At least I felt that I am not alone... I am trying to recover on my own coz audiologists here in our place are super rare and if there is one, I bet the treatment will be too expensive...

Speaking as someone who has has experienced hyperacusis and tinnitus one of the hardest thing is not being able to get through to other people just what its like , most people know and have experienced tinnitus even if its just for 24 hours but hyperacusis is just on another level stresswise ,more so for music lovers and musicians of which I am one ; i also resorted to noise cancelling headphones ; what a lifeline. Good luck Nishant.

Hey ... Can you tell me how you cured your hyperacusis ?

    • @allex1309
      @allex1309 11 місяців тому +1

I didnt actually cure it , it just lessoned as time went on . I was driving to work one morning and I just lost any sound in my left ear over maybe a couple of minutes , an hour later I was in pain which got worse as time went on ; i think it was fluid or something .managed to see a doctor same day and he gave antibiotics which didnt make any difference . It took three days before the pain subsided and then the hyperacusis developed . I had my daughter and two children living with us and it was one of the most difficult times of my life . I learnt that stress ,tiredness lack of sleep etc all make it far worse and most importantly how you respond to everyday situations ; the headphones were the only way i could cope initially and i still use ear defenders on occasion ; im in the building trade so power tools can be tricky . So now I do breathing exercises and the cold shower thing which i find helps and thats it .

    • @allex1309
      @allex1309 11 місяців тому +1

oh yeah I had an mri scan which was horrendous ; they asked if i wanted the radio in the headphones while im getting scanned so I thought that might be all I would hear , well it just made things worse and I nearly had to get them to stop ! but just managed to hold it together..

I suffer for over 15yrs now and my left ear is still ringing till today but I’m getting use to it. My case is different, for me whenever my body is feeling low or required attention my ear starts to ring more louder for example when I am hungry or sick etc. I will try to check on those medicines you’ve listed….thanks

    TW: suicidal
Hi, I am a fellow person who deals with Hyperacusis and Tinnitus. Ex-musician and artist manager as well. Based in India
So my story is that I have Tinnitus with Tmj disorder for 6 years. I was dealing fine until two years I developed Pulsatile Tinnitus. I also developed dual tonal tinnitus.
I had a couple of incidents where I could feel my sound sensitivity had increased, but I attended a friend's wedding last July, which was the biggest mistake of my life. It was an indoor wedding, and the music messed up my ears. This happened around the same time when you developed it as well. July 2021. Over time I noticed I couldn't bear any sounds from my right ear. I already knew that ENTs and conventional doctors are useless in this condition. I thought maybe this was happening because of TMJ disorder as well. I got costly treatment from a doctor in Mumbai, but my sensitivity never improved. Luckily it was mostly only in my right ear, and I was using my left ear at low volumes with my job. So much so that I can't even deal with people and myself talking slightly loudly.
I never went to an audiologist with the fear of getting an audiometry test (I have gotten them various times before pre hyperacusis) because of the loud tones they use in their examination.
Fast forward to yesterday; while working, a loud notification sound messed up my left ear. Now I feel doomed, that the only way out of this is to kill myself, and that there is no way this can get better as there is no cure. My high-stress desk job doesn't help this situation as well. Right now, my left ear is paining with any slight sound. I knew about the risks of MRIs, so I never got them done.
Early in the morning, I was looking for something on this condition, and your video popped up. Thank you for posting this, as it gives me up. I fear that my deliberate delay in visiting an audiologist must have worsened my condition. Still, before my recent incident, I was dealing okay with it, but yes, my quality of life has been drastically reduced. I have listened to music since this incident. Let me know if you are okay with getting in touch with me.

Hi Nishant, good video. I am a tinnitus/hyperacusis suffering musician and sound engineer and I have been studying hyperacusis for over a year now. I am interested to know if your LDLs were 50db at all frequencies or was it just at a specific range?
It may also interest you to know that I tried many different types of noise cancelling headphones trying to find ones that didn't sound painfully harsh. In the end I settled on soundcore Q30 which seemed much smoother than the others I tried, had good noise cancelling and a really good app that had several EQ presets and the ability to create your own with a graphic equalizer.
As you will know good noise cancelling is really helpful for listening to music as it allows you to turn the level down low without it being drowned out by background noise. That being said it is important not to isolate yourself from sound altogether as that can just make things worse. The key as you said is to very slowly, over many months increase the sound volume that you are exposed to. My therapist said to try to listen through speakers as well as headphones.
    Hope someone finds this helpful.

@@aniruddha12345678 Yes l do feel that my hyperacusis is slowly improving, I am certainly not feeling as stressed by it as I used to be.
The change is gradual so it's not easy to notice it but I am now doing things now like flying and exploring cities which I found very challenging 18 months ago. I'm not using hearing protection very much now and I'm also able to use my hearing aids now which I couldn't do before. I am. producing and mixing music now which I wasn't able to do 18 months ago.
I'm not sure that my hyperacusis will ever fully resolve but I notice it less and less as time goes on and I can't really remember how my hearing used to sound before I had it.
Many accounts I've seen say that it takes 18 months to 2 years before hyperacusis starts to get better, in my case this does ring true.
I think that gradually increasing exposure to sound and trying not to get obsessed with hearing seems to be working for me.

Hi, I was searching for another person's video, only to find out how long this has been going on for me, but I found your message of hope. I'm glad I found it, even though it's been hard to have hope.
Unlike you and some others, I'm having to guess as to cause. While I didn't get the vaccine (my health condition made my herbalist and me decide not to), I'm nearly certain this is rooted in Covid 19 infection and/or viral infection. The timing fits and I've never had an issue exactly like this before. I've been to some bad places too (physically and emotionally). Oddly, I'm taking the same supplements and a few others (minus the Ginkgo which I might add but I have to consult first).
I am a vocalist so this has been very difficult. Sometimes, singing helps me even with this, but I've had to change habits like even listening to music, talking on phone, etc.
I'm glad you saw change. Much of your story is like mine. I had to listen again, because I must have been in too much pain the first time I listened. I'm so sorry about the MRI. That's brutal. Even with the protection, it kills. I love the way you told them off in here. I feel that! I'm in a lot of pain, but you got me to laugh with that profanity. They had it coming.
Oddly, I have been sensitive to sound, and I think I might have the same 3M ear covering headphones. They don't have any battery. Do yours use a battery? I'm trying to hold on, because many times, I don't want to be here anymore.
By the way, even with my ears in pain (loud hissing), I am listening your song, Sahi. It's quite beautiful. Nice guitar work and vocals! My father was born in India, and much of my family still lives in Kerala.
What supplements did you take exactly? I know you aren't a doctor, but I wanted to try what another has done who had success. Oddly, I think I'm taking nearly what you ended up taking.
    Regards, Cheryl

      Dear Cheryl,
I'm so sorry to hear about your pain and sincerely hope that you feel better real soon.
I also believe that there's something to do with Covid and have read a lot of studies concurring with the hypothesis.
I'm glad to hear about your music. Hope it keeps growing with time. My life as a musician got an excruciating blow because of all this, but I'm trying my best to hang on. And of course, music aside, life has become "difficult" as well. Hoping that it gets better, that's all.
I hope to sue the hell out of that hospital for that terrible negligence. Let's see how that pans out. I'm glad you found it funny, it came from the heart. :)
Not at all, the 3M headphones don't come with any battery. They're just ear muffs. I forgot to share in the video that I'm now using ear plugs by Phonak (Serenity Choice) which are even more convenient. My audiologist sold them to me and they work really well and are much more handy.
I can't thank you enough for listening to Sahi and for your kind appreciation. It means a lot to me. The song holds a special place in my heart because it came out all while I was forced to deal with this ordeal. Hope that it goes somewhere. Godspeed!
I take Vitamin B12 tablets (in the form of Neurobion), Vitamin D (Uprise D3) and Gingko Biloba extract. Those two are really important. For Vitamin C, I eat a fruit called Amla (Indian Gooseberry). These supplements, more than anything, made me feel a bit better. I'd wholeheartedly recommend that you take them as well. There's nothing to lose with those.
Wishing you a lot of luck.
      Best wishes and regards,
      Nishant

Hey man, I am in a similar position to you. I have tinnitus and hyperacusis and am a producer. Did you find that your hyperacusis triggered your tinnitus to be louder? I find that sounds from speakers at 60db SPL make my tinnitus louder. It's like the tinnitus baseline increases every time I listen to sounds from speakers or any volume with headphones. If you had a similar experience, did you find that when you treated the hyperacusis, that the tinnitus wouldn't be spiked and triggered anymore?

Hey. Sorry to hear it, man. Yes, my tinnitus also got worse due to exposure to high volumes. And of course, the ears pained due to Hyperacusis.
The therapy for hyperacusis helped because it trains you to tolerate sounds a little better. So you could definitely try that.
Unfortunately, I can't recommend you ear plugs, etc. Ad a producer, you need to hear sounds as they are.

    Hey guys
My Tinnitus started almost 1 year back (no hearing
loss) and after almost 4-5 months it almost
disappeared (95% decreased). And now a month
back it started again but quieter than the previous
episode and now I am hearing tinnitus over sounds
(Reactive Tinnitus) and sometimes distortions over
specific frequencies. It worsened in these 3 days, I
ve started a 5 day course of steroids and take nasal
drop twice or thrice a day. I dont really have
sensitivity to loudness but I just dont like it now or
maybe I psychologically think it may harm my ears
    more.
Guys please suggest what is it Hyperacusis or just a variant of tinnitus

Tinnitus and Hyperacusis are linked to the brain, and 99,99% of ENT from all over the world are completely clueless and incompetent regarding these terrible issues. The brain is still a complex organ and they still in 2023 don't understand fully how these conditions originate, and how to treat them. That's a shame. Modern medicine is still completely underdeveloped.
Thus, We need to keep raising awareness, like this young lad did in this excellent video, and give money to research labs if we can afford it. I wish you the very best, and a full recovery (sometimes the brain does recover by its own, but it takes time; mostly true for hyperacusis, a bit less true for tinnitus).

I cried watching this. I think I have mild tinnitus but the sound tends to get louder when any background sound is loud. My family, though agrees to take me to doctor, but doesn't take it seriously nor do they even think it can get depressing. They think that I am making a big issue out of it. At the end of the video when you said it can get depressing, just hang on and try staying positive, I burst crying. I felt validated for what I was feeling for the first time because I am tired explaining to my family that this is indeed serious that's been happening with me. They never approved my emotions or validated.
I am still just 24 and I cant imagine having this for my entire life. I hope it just goes away. I am still trying to find a place in my career, havent reached where I want to and everyone amongst my peers has, makes me feel more depressing, and tinnitus is just acting as a catalyst to make me feel more hopeless.

Kitne bhi mri, scan, test, audiogram kro kuch bhi fayda nhi..paisa toh jayega proper tratment nhi hogi kyuki iska ellaj hi nahi hai sirf thodasa relax hoga lekin pura cure nhi hoga.. Abhi mai batata hu kya krna hai.. Mujhe tinnitus 6years se hai.. Sirf ye karo
    1.avoid ringing, buzzing noise
2.jo hua hai usse ladna sikho
    3.stress mat lo
    4.coffee, drink mat kro
5.dolby dj ke noise se dur raho
    6.always be happy
7.yoga karo agar aata hai toh

Nishant, thanks for the video. Did you get back to music and if yes, do you play as usual or in different settings / a bit less than before, etc. ? What are your tips for an acoustic guitarist with tinnitus ?

Hello, Florian. Yes, I'm still at it (touch wood). It's basically a low volume affair now. I keep my ear plugs on, but it becomes difficult when I have to sing because of occlusion. Instruments aren't a problem at studio sessions/live because all I have to do is just wear my ear plugs and then the headphones (if I'm playing drums). Singing is hard, so I take off the ear plugs when I have to sing. Singing live is very difficult and I'm trying to find ways to get around it. I'll let you know if I'm able to find something.
If you're playing acoustic guitar (without singing), it's no problem. Just keep your ear plugs on. It'll not be as great as playing naturally because the sound gets muffled, but it'll be better than not playing at all. All the best, mate.

@@NishantMittalVideos Cheers mate, thanks sooo much for the detailed answer ! And yeah, I already noticed that singing would be a bit more complicated... I intend to focus on guitar anyway. All the best 🙏

Hi, hope you are sound and well. This video was really heartwarming. Thank you so much. But you didn't say anything about Sound therapy as the main and only treatment available out thete. Have you ever used Pink or White noise?

Hello. I mentioned sound therapy. As I said, when I went to the audiologist, he gave me sessions of sound therapy which helped me a lot. And that therapy is different from listening to white and/or pink noise. Listening to those sounds is just a way of distracting yourself and hopefully training your mind. Audiologist's therapy which I got for hyperacusis was a little different.

@@NishantMittalVideos thanx for answering my questions. I don't really wana bother you with too many questions but would you plz say what kind of sound therapy it was? I downloded some pink noise and listened to it and it really worked but hyperacusis came back again. I don't really know what to do or what not to do. ENTs are ignorant unfortunatly.

@@arminoraee2508 So in sound therapy for Hyperacusis, they play pure tones at particular decibels, and periodically raise the levels. While they're doing that, they have you perform breathing exercises, etc. They stop raising the levels (of a pure tone of a particular frequency) when it becomes unbearable for you. They then repeat this process for all frequencies in one session.
Gradually, after a 7-8 sessions, my Loudness Discomfort Level (LDL) improved from being at 50-60 Db to 70-80 Db for most frequencies.
This is the process in a nutshell. Hope it helps.
