- Quick video showing the highly successful snare pole set-up that Tier 1 Trapper uses to snare beaver under the ice.
Step by step instructions for a simple, yet effective snare pole. Added footage shows the employment and emplacement of snare pole in the middle of a small clearing in a beaver feed bed, just a few feet from the beaver lodge.
Equipment needed:
2 x beaver snares
40" aspen stick, about 1 1/2" in diameter
8" piece of 12 gauge wire
36" piece of 12 gauge wire

Using Southern Snare & Supply beaver snares have been very effective and I recommend trying them out.

Awesome video
i really like that setup makes it very easy. not having to carry a bunch of 8 foot poles to make sure to anchor to the bottom. I'm certainly going to give this a try in February!!!!
nice snare poles
Thanks. I used to make them more complicated, but I have refined them over the past few years to be simpler to make and emplace,, and also more effective.
Have you ever had one pulled under? Do the beavers struggle so much they make break the support peice? What is the minimum size cross peice you use. Thanks great idea. I have a perfect place for a few of these.
Good questions. I had one pull the snare pole through the ice a couple years ago. As a result, I no longer set snares when its above freezing (preferably below 25 degrees) so the snare pole freezes solid in place. once its frozen, they cannot move it and they drown within a few minutes. Also, once frozen , there is no chance of the beaver breaking the support cross piece. it needs to be wide enough to span the hole and just hold it in place until it freezes (usually within 30 minutes). I usually cut my holes in the ice about 6" x 24". If you don't have cold enough temperatures where you're at, then personally, I wouldn't use snares. I know a lot of southern trappers do, and they are successful, but if the beaver doesn't drown right away, they will thrash around enough that the snare will damage the hide. Good luck!
What's the tubing you use at 4:22? Does that come with the snare?
Yes. The snares come with a plastic tubing or metal ring called a "whammy" to attach snare to support wire.
If your ice is a foot or more in depth, one would have to readjust the height of the snares, correct? Cause the bait pole would be too short…..
Yes, as the season gets later, and the ice gets thicker, I attach snares about 18" from the top . I still use the same length of pole (about 4')
You have to use dead wood😮
Thanks Bro.. you do you, and I'll continue using green wood for bait. Good luck.
@tier1trapper747 it look like you were using the poles to stable the330
This is a video on snaring beaver using snare poles. There isn't a single 330 anywhere in the video.
But, yes, correct. You want to use only dead stakes for your 330s.
What was your UDT class number?
I'm not a SEAL. I was a US Army Green Beret.
