    We know that cancer diagnosis in younger patients under 50 years of age is problematic because of the fact that cancer is less common. For some GPs the criteria are very firm, so they wouldn't consider referring a patient presenting below those age criteria, while others they see those criteria as a much more flexible guidance. And some of them even said they never actually look at the guidelines and they refer patients based on their clinical judgment. So one of the recommendations from this study is that GPs' awareness of the fact that there is some inbuilt flexibility in NICE guidelines is raised, and is also matched by referral systems that allow that clinical judgment of GPs to be applied.
