  • Disney has kinda sucked for years. I'll say it. Sure, Marvel is doing great! Pixar's wonderful! And Disney+ is a growing success. But as for the Disney Original core... I feel it leaves something to be desired. With crappy remakes, flopping sequels and unforgettable fluff. So now with the relatively new release of Raya and The Last Dragon, has Disney proven they still have SOME magic remaining? Let's see...

Beauty and the Beast were the best if the bunch since it literally just copies the original plot with minor adjustments and no major deviations...
Aladdin was good I heard but I haven't watched it yet so I can't judge...
Mulan didn't even carry a single tone from the progress they have been making into how they did in other Live-Action Remakes...
They started with Cinderalla and it was good since it just added more drama instead to the story without changing much of the story...
No major plots being changed and the only change was more details, the King dying and the Chancellor being an antagonist.
And giving motivation for Lady Tremaine on why she was cruel to Cinderalla.
Maleficent is more of a Spin-off that's totally different in a way since it's not really the princess who us the protagonist but Maleficent.
It's more along the lines of films in which the villains are the protagonists like the upcoming Cruella.
Beauty and the Beast did much better by literally adding the thing missing from Cinderalla...
Tons of musical numbers though to be fair Cinderalla didn't really have plenty of sings in it...
Aladdin did the same as Beauty and the Beast with literally adding the musical parts and making slight changes to some characters and plots without doing much deviation.
Though Mulan's plot seems to be so far removed from it's source material they could have just slapped any other name into the film and it would have been better...
Honestly, the only good thing I heard from this that the original Voice for Mulan appeared in the end...

Yeah. Mirrors my thoughts exactly. It basically telegraphs its ending and thematic throughput from the moment Raya's father says "I believe we can be Kumandra again" at the beginning of the movie. Some people may criticise that as unambitious or boring, but honestly, I feel Disney is at their best when they tell a simple story well as opposed to telling a sprawling story haphazardly (*cough* Frozen II *cough*).

IMO Raya and the Last Dragon was the lesser version of Moana, it had a McGuffin based story with characters that initially have contrasting personalities and had to find some way to fix the world.
The issues I found with the movie was there were too many characters, that caused the development of them to not be as fleshed out and the growth seen is rushed. Some of the core values of the characters were inconsistent at times. It would’ve benefited from maybe 2-4 characters, there’d be more time to help create arcs, unique characteristics, etc. The writing was pretty average, it’s something you’d expect from a regular animated movie. The visuals were excellent (why wouldn’t it, it’s Disney).
Overall it’s pretty average so it’s a 6/10 for me.

Wow, just a 1 to 1 copy of Schaffrillas's words. How original.
Too bad Moana DID have only 3 main characters, yet only Maui got some development, which is just being nicer to Moana. Lalutai, the monsters land, was on screen for only 1 minute (technically 6, but 5 of these minutes were spent on Tamatoa), which makes it very forgettable. Most of the movie takes place in the ocean, which is non-stop blue scenery and it gets boring. The only thing Moana does better than Raya is the humor.

@@Flome810 Korra got exactly 1 thing handed to her and it was also handed to Aang. The ability to remove bending was as given to Aang as much as it was given to Korra.
Korra had to struggle hard for everything else she got. And part of that struggle comes from losing access to her previous lives. Something every other Avatar was able to rely on was something Korra has to move on without.
And Bolin is easily one of the best characters in Avatar. Tenzin is pretty interesting. And the villains in Korra were generally top tier, especially in comparison to Ozai (yes Azula is fantastic but Zaheer, and Kovira are very close in quality while Amon had a more compelling motivation.) Asami was also a really good character for others to bounce off of.
Just because LoK isn't more of TLA doesn't mean you need to act as though it is lesser. Korra had more struggles during creation yet managed to create a more compelling protagonist and tackle themes of mental health far better than most western media has historically. Korra is one of if not the most human character in The Avatar Universe we have seen thus far and I think it is quite commendable for that.
Also the armadillo/pill bug pet in Raya was a *lot* More like Naga than Appa. Which is nice because Naga is fantastic even though they got less screen time and Raya certainly didn't have the time for something like the episode on Appa being abused for 20-something minutes straight.

      @haruhirogrimgar6047 3 роки тому +6

@@Flome810 I have to hard disagree that Korra is lesser than The Last Airbender (stop implying Korra isn't part of the Avatar series.)
Bolin is his own unique character away from Sokka. They are completely separate characters with the only somewhat similar traits being they are more aimed towards being comic relief and having exaggerated reactions. Bolin is a naive and kind guy who is deeply motivated and enthralled with Romance who struggles with the idea of standing out on his own and being loved by others. Sokka is an isolated misogynist that learns to value his mind over body and show immense compassion to those around him as well as recognize the strength of women. Both have light elements of trying to be a "ladies man" and both utilize sarcasm somewhat regularly but that is where their similarities end.
The giant robot didn't cater to my tastes since I prefer fantasy over sci-fi and don't care for gundamn but it stands fine as its own. But the great part of S4 and the finale was Korra and Kovira as characters. How Kovira works as an amazing foil to Korra. That Korra who desperately wanted to be Aang, be the saviour of the world on the brink of war was unable to help when the Earth Nation needed her the most. Kovira stepped in a head-strong confidant young woman who is considered to be a bending prodigy did what korra was physically unable to but also started going too far in terms of power to where she also mirrored Ozai (Aang's final villain.) Korra by showing compassion and forgiveness to Kovira was the expression of Korra learning to show compassion and forgive herself, finally able to express the peaceful solution Aang was looking for. Aang taking action against the Fire Lord in the majority of situations would end up in the death of Ozai, he had to struggle to find a way to beat him without death. Korra without even acting would have resulted in the death of Kovira, but she instead managed to save her through action. And mind you Korra did that without the help of some Lion Turtle just giving her the peaceful solution she was looking for like Aang. I don't know how your takeaway to the finale of Korra was "giant robot dumb" when that is the apex of Korra learning to confront her mental illness and the abuse/trauma she experienced over the last 4 seasons.
Amon is incredibly intimidating and represents a very reasonable movement. Even Zuko, the master swordsman, was unable to stand-up to a mediocre earth nation soldier back in Zuko Alone without his bending. There is great potential and it is very easy to understand there would be a power imbalance between the majority non-benders and the bending minority which would result in tensions. As technology had the opportunity to advance so that non-benders had access to powers previously exclusive to benders there was a lot of social conflict. This is the type of movement Aang would have been perfect to solve. The hero that travelled the world, saw all tribes equally and wanted to help everyone and resolve things peacefully. By comparison Korra grew up isolated in a small camp away from society being told of the stories of all these powerful great Avatars ending violent wars through their bending might. Where Aang ended the 100 year war by *fighting* Ozai and the fire nation, the head-strong girl with a fear of losing her physical might has to fight a man whose movement is empowered by violence and can physically cripple Korra. Amon is even the closest the Avatar series came to horror, his use of blood bending, the sound effects, the movement, the cold demeanor is terrifying. His use of bending is somewhat hypocritical but it doesn't defeat his movement that a world with non-benders would remove inequality, but bending is the sole way to remove that inequality. He is only a hypocrite if he kept his bending after removing everyone else's. But lastly Amon was great for representing one of the main issues Korra faced. Aang didn't want to be the Avatar in a world that needed an Avatar, Korra desperately wanted to be the Avatar in a world that told her the Avatar is not only unneeded but actively hated. Amon was the start of that.
The love triangle that existed in S1 and Korra as a character matured over the course of 4 seasons. She wasn't a 12-year-old with the wisdom of Aang. She was a sheltered 17 year old at the start of the series with hormones going crazy and she was in a new world, by the end of the show she is incredibly introspective and compassionate. She tempers her emotions and works to understand everyone's perspectives compared to the start. Korra isn't Aang and Aang although lovable is unreasonably mature for his age. Mako is definitely under-utilized and I disagree that he is "hollow garbage." His relationship with Bolin is enough to pull him along especially with the finale where he was a perfect vehicle to display Bolin's progress where Bolin saves Mako for a change.
Varrik is okay, Tenzin is hilarious and has a fun character arc. But you are massively discounting other characters namely Korra. The most well-developed and journeyed character in Avatar in my opinion. Zuko is great but Korra had quite a journey and came so far as a character.
S2 is the only problematic season for Korra, fans just accept that S2 is poor and move on. The only thing that the show was really missing or could use more of to improve the pacing was character episodes. But Korra Alone is singlehandedly one of the best episodes of any animated show so it carries quite a bit of weight for S4.
And your comments have exclusively been degrading Korra and her show.

I know a lot of people will disagree but that's my opinion a movie should not be critiqued for who made it or who was in it. Second thing is that I don't think that Sisu made this movie good in my opinion she down graded the movie, yes they needed a dragon for the movie but while I respect Awakafina I think Sisu's voice was odd for a dragon and a bit over the top at times. I think Raya was the strongest part of the movie, she was badass. I know that's just my opinion but her conflict with Namaari and the entirety of Fang was, by far, my favorite part of the movie.

I had issues with the movie. I wish we spent more time in the kingdoms and that getting the jewels was a bigger threat and every character other than Sisu and Raya is not too memorable but otherwise I really enjoyed it: the animation, the worldbuilding, the score, the high stakes, the fight scenes, Raya and Sisu’s bond, it’s mostly funny, it’s emotional and it really felt like a post apocalyptic world because a lot of the places we visit are sparsely populated. 8/10. It’s not amazing but I’m glad we have an original movie again and not a sequel/remake (and this is coming from someone who thought Frozen 2 was better than the first). Hopefully Encanto is good

Honestly Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar seem to switch places every decade.
During the 2000s, WDAS was struggling critically and at the box office, meanwhile Pixar dominated Critically and at the box office.
Then in the 2010s, WDAS performed well with amazing new originals stories that did great critically and at the box office. Meanwhile, Pixar made a ton of sequels and only a few originals, with the majority of their films being let downs and only a couple masterpieces, however they still succeeded at the box office but it was at the cost of Pixar’s reputation.
However the 2020s seem to be changing things around once again with WDAS entering the sequels zone (with Frozen III, Zootopia 2, and many more likely around the corner) and they’re originals so far don’t seem to be as good as they once were. Meanwhile Pixar, is looking to create a ton of originals (and if Soul was an indication, they will be critically acclaimed) and since it’s Pixar, it’ll do good in the box office as well. Granted this is only the first 2 years of the decades but it makes sense as Pixar is clearly looking to get back in the original world while WDAS looks like it want to make powerhouse franchises.
I have mixed feeling about this as I’m happy to see Pixar get back into what it’s best at but I’m sad to see WDAS enter it’s unoriginality phase as it has been one of the only Disney entities to be successful at making new original stories while the rest of the company became a money hungry unoriginal entity. It’ll be sad to see WDAS go on a decade hiatus but at least Pixar will dominate this decade.

No music , no love interest , no theme of teen rebellion / seeking of independence / coming of age. 6:23 _"Giving starring roles to a more diverse set of people"_ is generally fine, as long as race doesn't become some virtuous component in and of itself. Companies hire talent, not race.
But the line _"correctly representing characters through their casting choices"_ is ALL KINDS of messed up and makes ZERO sense. This is because voice actors do not "represent" characters. They voice characters. The character within the media is its own separate entity from the voice actor. Always has been. A voice actor lends his or her voice to allow the character to come alive on screen. The only thing that matters when "representing" a voiced character is (you guessed it) the voice. If you have the opinion that voice actors need to "represent" characters in anything more than voice, then you're consuming movies the wrong way. It is not their job to be the characters. It is their job to voice the characters.
Because this opens up a never-ending rabbit hole. Must a Southeast Asian model the characters? Do the rigging? Do the hair physics? Can a non-Southeast Asian design the set pieces? Clothing, objects, plotlines? What about compose the music? The studio might do well to consult Southeast Asians on cultural knowledge, but the answer to all those questions is no. Neither must a Southeast Asian voice a character of any origin. They can. But I'm saying it's not a requirement. Neither is it a positive metric to pursue in creating a movie.
Voice actors do not "represent" characters in anything more than voice. That's why they are called voice actors.

    • @eliyahs6725
      @eliyahs6725 3 роки тому +4

I mean, it would be better if there were South Asian voice actors voice acting since there are not many south Asian characters out there, so there are not many chances for South Asian people to voice act. Then after that they try and hammer it into the main characters head that they're weird for not trusting people even though she had pretty much no reason to, especially when the dragon died. When she was shot by the crossbow due to the Raya trying to whip it out of the enemies hand, Raya had every reason to believe they would shoot seeing as how she tightened her grip instead of loosening it. And the writers need to read more into show dont tell as you can't go five minutes without them saying the word trust. It was really not a good movie but it had some good fight scenes and a few really nice emotional parts. Also the dragon was incredibly annoying, she had one good line but otherwise she was awful, her jokes were terrible and not funny at all.

I'm sorry but raya the last dragon just somehow felt basic. Even with all the mystical elements with the film.

I still think we need to split Disney and Disney Animation studios. DAS isn't responsible for the live action films, the main branch is. But we're blaming both of them lile they're the same entity.
"But it's still Disney!" Right and I'm saying that both branches don't control each other. It takes a long time to make 3d films which is why we've seen more live action films from the mother branch.
People complain about DAS's sequels but they've only released two in the past few years lol. And their sequels have never been great with few exceptions.
Also films don't have to be "great" or "bad", it can be good. And I think that that's where Raya lies - just a good, visually stunning and moderate run-of-the-mill DAS film.

Notice how Raya's sword is a fusion of two Fire Emblem swords? It's shaped like Robin's lightning sword but functions like Byleth's Sword of the Creator.

The thing that makes mad about this movie is that it’s premium, WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Soul were all free while Raya and the Last Dragon is heckling premium, Disney is still money hungry

I did kinda enjoy this movie but I also hate the Dragon with a passion. She doesn't look like a dragon, they just put a human face on it and made it move like a human which just really bothered me.

Nope. Disney hasn't had it in over a decade. Good films becoming more rare, and bad ones being shelled out more often... it's gotten so bad, I'm fairly certain that the last bit of Disney magic was released with Christopher Robin and Mary Poppins, as I haven't seen a good film from them since.

I'm gonna have to disagree with your assertion that it's better off that the voice cast is Asian than any other race for the film. I think one of the most beautiful things about voice acting in animation is that ANYONE can play ANYTHING, regardless of their race, background or cultural status, and I think that's a truly beautiful thing. Stripping away the barriers to entry that traditional films would have to consider when looking for appropriate casting. I think anyone can write a good animated film regardless of culture and anyone can voice act the roles in the story too. Culture can and should be something we can understand and celebrate together and not something that should be guarded off from others by way of "diversity quotas". If there's one thing I would say in counterpoint to this video that would be it. Otherwise good video, you're probably the only person I've seen say they liked the dragon character, which took me by shock as everyone else has seemed to have given her the boot.

When I first saw the trailer before it came out, I was very excited because 1. The artstyle was different
    2. It looked very original/ something worth watching
    3. It had more culture in it
And when I watched the movie I was NOT disappointed.

Honestly this movie was a major disappointment for me. Gorgeous visuals and animations, really interesting premise, but ultimately that just makes the flaws hit that much harder. One of the reasons why the runtime is so short I legitimately suspect is because they actually didn't have anything else to pad it out with. The world building feels more like a first draft of an interesting idea with almost no time spent on actually fleshing it out.
So yes the premise is interesting but that alone is just setting up potential, if you don't follow through on it you are just wasting all that potential making things feel much worse. The world building again seems cool enough but it also feels like they really only thought up two or three places and the others just feel like set dressing, empty and hollow.
And then we get to the biggest downfall, the story, or rather the story and the messaging. I find it almost amusing how you show Zuko on screen when talking about the uh, antagonist girl when we get to see almost no character depth in her. Seriously she alone is probably one of the biggest downfalls of the whole movie. A character with no introspection, who gets chance after chance after chance to do the right thing or to even show a shred of personal responsibility or character, or anything. Still she ends up doing nothing. Like you mentioned sure she does the "right thing" when she literally has no other way out, it's the only thing left for her to do, and that is somehow supposed to be celebrated?
I have heard people complaining about Sisu and given the role she plays she can be a bit jarring but I don't mind too much, especially when you have antagonist girl.
The other characters are fine, but we don't get to see enough of them really. Again they feel like set dressing, fitting in to some fairly common character stereotypes. You got the brute with a super soft side, the cute but super manipulative and somehow strong and capable toddler, and the witty kid running from his emotions.
I think what bothers me the most about this movie is how utterly wasted the potential is. The setup is great, but the payoff is horrible, like they fired the writer halfway through the story and they left and took all their notes with them, so they let an intern finish the story with only what was written to go on.
