I am 81 yr old. Too late to start THIS hobby. That said, I paid 40$ for a juniper and ended up chopping over 1/2 of the green growth off and ended up with a mutilated tree. Whatever. We will see what it looks like in a year, assuming I am still here😋

Sounds like you did the right thing then old timer. :)
That's what you got to do to make it look good in the future.
And you can learn and enjoy a hobby and make a sweet bonsai for your grandkids to cherish and refine more than hand on to their grandkids in those three decades+ you got ahead of you. 🙂
Main thing is if you enjoy doing it I guess.
Idk but they say that even just having a hobby and learning it and enjoying it and looking forward to it progress etc in your latter years can both increase your lifespan and just sort gives something to keep you going i guess... and also help keep your mind and body healthy and stave off things like dementia.
(I mean not every hobby i assume... probably not my other hobby mma cage fighting and stuff like that haha but bonsai might be ideal. )
Best of luck anyway my friend and God bless.

In Japan bonsai masters will work many years on trees they know they will never see the final form of, instead they work to make it better for the next generation of bonsai enthusiasts, you could do that and leave the trees to someone

Now this is exactly what I needed. Shown in detail, explained, on how to try to develop pads on Junipers. Nicely done man.
My junipers are my "trouble trees". I have just never gotten the routines for developing them properly. The result is, my Junipers are examples of my years of mistakes and lack of knowledge. Too late this season for any trying to start new on mine, so this will help me next season..I hope....

Do you have any advice on wiring still green growth on junipers? I’m noticing if I’m wiring a young tree that doesn’t have much woody branching yet, I have no choice but to trap the green scaly “foliage” on the main branch, and twice now it’s killed the whole branch.

I'm learning, just did a Youngstown Juniper this morning, using these techniques! I have more that I cut off, than what is left for the bonsai. But that's okay! I'll try to root some of them. I have 2 Blue Rug Junipers that look very much like this and they are NEXT! They are so short, I'm not sure how to show off their form in a planter/pot.

Hi Josh Richard from England fascinating videos just started into bonsai as I can only use one arm due to a disability I have had since birth I find it quite difficult to keeping the wire on the branch whilst I use the other hand to wind the wire around at the moment I hold The Wire firm with a clothes peg and wrap the wire with the other hand I also use some spring loaded pliers to keep the wire but the peg is not strong enough and if I don't support the pliers they are sometimes heavy and the weight bends the branch
Just wondering if you or any of your viewers have any idea regards Richard
