A lot of bonsai demos you see the artist working with top notch material, but for the average home bonsai enthusiast you often have to work with average material. So this is a great demo of how you can still create something beautiful. I'd love to see you do a series of these videos. Gives you a point of difference from other bonsai artists.
Great job Jason, love all your videos. I have a few small bonsai trees but now struggle, after spinal surgery I am no longer able to use my hands and arms, but that doesn't stop me enjoying your wonderful work. JOHN.
Awesome Peter, I finally grown some gut to wire my first Shimpaku semi- cascade. It's turn out pretty good looking. Can't wait for this baby to have a new home when the right season to repot. Thank you for sharing all the great and educational video.
Thanks for this video! I found a small Juniper for $10 at my local nursery has some similar issues to this tree, no wire scars but some rough pruning for sure. I'm excited to put some of these tips into practice.
Loved how it turned out & can envision a good result in the future life of this tree thanks to Jason’s description! Just happened to pick up 3 “misfits” from a big box store this week to practice on... 😎
Nice work. I bought my first real bonsai tree from you maybe 5 years ago, not sure about timeline, but it was the grand Chinese elm and had super nice movement. I cut it down and it started to become a really nice shohin but two years ago we had a really warm spell before spring for about a week then dropped below freezing overnight and I lost several trees that being one. I have really nice trees now but still miss that one because it was really the tree that started my journey
Great work and I really like your reasoning. I like how you take the tree to make something that is not like every other tree out there. Very well done. The only difference I would have done is that at 6:00 min you were talking about a branch that I would have used as a jin. Also at the top of the tree you cut a large branch that I would have make into a jin and then made a shari to connect those two to the jin at the bottom. As you can tell I like jin. I find it so interesting how different people take the same material and create something that is so different. I loved this.
this video is like my many junipers and others . have potential. I liked them with out much experience when buying. you give me inspiration. thanks. Keith Australia
hello jason thats the beauty ,when you buy any material from nursery you have to create from unwanted tree or undesirable material that is the hardest part . i do it all the time my garden is full of collected and nursery plants
Even with the wire scars and the too thick branche, it still looks good. However, for my taste, I really don't like the lowest thick branch. I think I would jin it.
Maybe everyone does not want to jin it or see it Jin. Not everyone has the same taste that's the beauty of art get over yourself.lol just so you know a lot of you guys come off as cocky and phony experts or bonsai snobs . If you were an expert you already know what you like to do this is obviously a video for beginners or people looking from inspiration but not from the comment section you feel me? Probably not have a nice day
@@dirtysouthhc2936 So because we are bonsai enthusiasts and not pro experts we are not allowed to speak our mind? Did I say I am a pro bonsai expert? No, just a bonsai enthusiast that speaks his mind. In case you missed the last part of my comment here it is again. "However, for my taste, I really don't like the lowest thick branch. I think I would jin it." What do you not understand about the 'for my taste' and 'I think I would jin it'. If you don't like these comments then don't react to it.
The low thick branch does look a little off. What do you think about training the movement down into a cascade for that 1 branch. I think that would be very unique.
Looking at the tree my first thought with that first branch....could you have used a branch splitter to wire it and bring it down so that it eliminated that straight area???
for me that's the most fun, too. creating great stuff out of basically nothing where pretty much everyone else would just ignore it and move on to better material. it's like stone sculpting: the thing you want is already in there, you just need to find it. that's the real challenge and beauty of this craft :)
Excellent job. One thing I’ve always wondered about wire scars: is it possible to carve away at them in order to hide them, or at least diminish their impact by making them look like they’re part of a bigger scar? Just a thought...I’m not experienced enough to have tried this or understand what the negative impact would be.
Jason, you did a beautiful job with this tree but I would make a jin and shari out of the long straight bottom branch. The angle at which that bottom branch moves breaks up the movement you have in the rest of the tree.
I like what you done with this. If i was in your position, that bottom straight branch has potential. Even to thicken up the trunk, then make some awsome gin.
Hello Jason, thank you again for providing these amazing, helpful videos The needles on my Chinese Juniper appear to be much longer than any of the ones I have seen in images/videos (more like a pine tree) vs my Japanese Juniper. Should I trim these to a desired length, or is there another way to accomplish this? Or should I just leave them as they are? Thank you
I think the lowest branch is messing up the bonsai. The plant no longer looks like a tree. If you remove the lowest branch, I think you would get a really nice Bunjin.

I hoped that you would explain your thoughts as you worked but it was such a graceful dance...
Then you presented your thinking. Beautiful.
Has given me several ideas to address two of our rather gnarly looking Trees. 👍👍
That is an amazing transformation. So wonderful to see what a skilled person can do, and Jason, you are skilled! Thank you for sharing.
Excellent transformation... material very challenging at the least... I like how you explained about the thick problem branch up top...
Great Job Jason! As always you compacted this tree very nicely. I liked the way you talked about being patience with the design for the future.
Awesome Peter, I finally grown some gut to wire my first Shimpaku semi- cascade. It's turn out pretty good looking. Can't wait for this baby to have a new home when the right season to repot. Thank you for sharing all the great and educational video.
Sorry Jason!!! I apologize for my mistake 😃
What a beautiful final image! Great tree, and great work!

Jason, can you release a long real-time video of this same material so we could see all of what you do?
this is too fast for me. beautiful work!
oh that turned out gorgeous, I was skeptical at first, good job!

You do a great video I hope to see more as they are very practical. Keep the videos coming I learn a lot.
Found a overgrown pyracantha that I bought on a wim it's one of my favorite trees now. Keep the videos coming I really enjoy them
Very nice. Hope to see more videos about redesigning Bonsai styles and bending techniques
this video is like my many junipers and others . have potential. I liked them with out much experience when buying. you give me inspiration. thanks. Keith Australia
That is amazing ! Never would have seen that in the starting piece
Wow. Really outstanding work. Really like your videos. Please keep up such good work.
Wow, that was awesome. You are so talented. Thank you for the video. I wish I could take classes with you.
You have such great vision and style Jason. Loving your work 🤗 Keep safe.
From NZ
Thanku Jason. Beautiful work. I loved it when u mentioned the flaws too. 😊🌳
I really like you video style. Just bought some supplies from your website. Keep the videos coming please.
That transformation is spectacular! I have so much to learn! :(
hello jason thats the beauty ,when you buy any material from nursery you have to create from unwanted tree or undesirable material that is the hardest part . i do it all the time my garden is full of collected and nursery plants
For material you thought may not come out all that good, it sure looks great man. Good job
Jason you have great talent and skill. My trees just aren't there yet after 3 years. Still making improvements though.
Well explained! Always fantastic content!
Amazing transformation Jason
Yes so glad you styled it. I was hoping to see this.
Gran trabajo. Gracias por compartir. I really think the first branch can be removed and trunk line would have more interest?
What a beautiful job, thanks for the lessons
Even with the wire scars and the too thick branche, it still looks good. However, for my taste, I really don't like the lowest thick branch. I think I would jin it.
Either that or semi cascade it

Wow amazing! From zero to hero, I like that 🌲.
Looks awesome 👏🏻 what a transformation !

Hi Jason, any updates on this tree? It would be great to see some progress!
Looking at the tree my first thought with that first branch....could you have used a branch splitter to wire it and bring it down so that it eliminated that straight area???
love the transformation. Candidate for a slab?

amazing..... do you give suggestion on how to style a tree if I sent you picture?
Nice work. When will you repot it?
Looking beautiful 👍
Beautiful job

Too good, looking so beautiful 👌👌👌
good job!! Congratulations!!
I think it looks great! What would you charge for a “not desirable” tree such as this?
Awesome tree, love it

Great video
wow only took you an hour.. nice..! Could you split the two thickest branches to bend them more? left a like
Wow great job I didn't see that style being possible.
Amazing my friend.
Perhaps the first branch could have been removed after all? Beautiful transformation regardless.
BEAUTIFUL
Wow nice i am huge fan of you
Que buen trabajo
Thank you
I love bonsai ❤
wow I thougt that was a lost cause awesome job
I can not find steps How to create crown, can you suggest me ?
Oh man, you are really good!
Maybe remove the left lowest branch and bend the straight one on the right around behind to fill that space. Just thinking out loud.
What is the best way to germinate Japanese juniper and Japanese cedar from seed.
i would cut off the lowest branch..🙈
nice work.
Its beautiful😍
Love it love it love it!
Super brother you did a good job
What kind of juniper is this?
That’s awesome!
Nice
chia sẽ của bạn rất bổ ích
Thanks. What a talent b
Wow
Might look better if you Jin or remove the lowest branch
WOW!!!
Material like this is not easy to find for everyone. Here in Ohio there are no nurseries that have material but cookie cutter airlayers and babies
I think the lowest branch is messing up the bonsai. The plant no longer looks like a tree. If you remove the lowest branch, I think you would get a really nice Bunjin.
Would disagree, not all bonsai trees have to look like trees you would find in nature
Average material
So...basically everything in northern California
