    By far the best video I’ve seen. As a beginner it’s hard to figure out what actually needs to be done, with the wealth of information online it’s easy to get confused, pruning and styling is everywhere on UA-cam etc but not many development videos that really give an understanding of how this all works. My first 5 trees were all in bonsai pots, I recently bought my first starter tree which is a lovely juniper in a plastic pot. After seeing this video I can now understand and envision how my tree wil develop. It’s also made me realise that one of my trees in a bonsai pot may need to go into a bigger plastic container as it’s struggling to grow foliage. Keep up the good work👌🏻

    This is an almost well-kept secret. Your comments about soil make perfect sense to me. My desire is to DEVELOP large bonsai. I am not in the position to collect large stock in the wild. So I plant my trees in oversize containers. However, I am continuing to use granite grit as my soil. Although I water frequently, I now realize I need more organic soil. I have long suspected this but everything I read or see and hear online is rocky, well-draining soil. Thank you.

Very easy to understand and has saved my brand new Chinese Elm from a possible mis-step in growing mediums. I was about to pot up this very thin little sapling into a 1 gal pot with bonsai mix!! Hi! Love your videos, they go from 0 to 10 covering all minute details in a proper flow. Thankyou 😬
    I have one query regarding pine, so by rule of 2 we have to keep 2 branch otherwise it will cause swelling, but during trunk development can we keep all the candles despite of them causing swelling as main focus is at trunk and not on refining?

    • @BonsaiEn
      @BonsaiEn  7 місяців тому

      In development you have to keep in mind where your tree will eventually end up. i always say in development leave as much growth on as possible where it wont cause any issues. if you have multiple shoots in one place that will cause an issue so prune to avoid the swelling. There are also a lot of trees that become apically dominant so if the tree isn't a species that can be completely trunk chopped to restart branching then you will have to also make sure you balance the tree to ensure you don't lose the lower growth you will eventually fall back on.

It is beautifully shaped already, and the trunk and branches are the right thickness for the size of the tree as well as the shape being well established. I’d like to change it from a small Bonsai to the same shape but bigger and taller. If I were to put it in a large pot that is used for development rather than making it into a bonsai would that work for a tree that’s already Proportionately correct.? I have heard that putting a bonsai tree in a pot. That’s much bigger is not good for a plant. So I am concerned about doing this with my tree. What would you recommend?

    • @BonsaiEn
      @BonsaiEn  2 роки тому

      you could have a sacrifice branch on the top of the tree, this will allow you to style lower branches and begin that process while 1 single branch pulls energy through the tree. although be careful with this as some species might favor that top growth and you will see some die back of lower branches.

    Does the rule of 2 apply if you have 2 branches right at the bottom of the trunk? Surely that will just thicken the base quicker, 1 of my cork elms I'm growing and developing at the moment has exactly that, I've taken any doubles off any distance up the tree but I've left them as abit of an experiment.

  • @michaeleber4752

    This was an important class for my development. So I have two questions. Using course sand between 1-2 mm in size should give my development trees stretch out the roots while getting lots of oxygen. Is this what you mean by course sand? I'm also planning to follow the teachings of Peter Chan and place them in a pond plant planter. So in your discussion of pruning yes or no? You had a branch to the right, a branch to the left, a branch to the right and the two branches that threaten to form a swell. So you showed removing the right branch but wouldn't it actually be the left branch you remove?
