    I want to come back as a Grumman in my next life. These beautiful airplanes were coming out every day to my ship, USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14), back in '67 and that was a long, long time ago.

    The Providers of VRC-30 Is the only C-2A Greyhound squadron I was not attached to in the history of the COD. I was at RVAW-110, VRC-50, VR-24, VRC-40, and VAW-120. I worked on almost every COD in the fleet both SLEP and Reprocurred. including the second prototype 148148. Sad to see the Mighty COD Going away.

    A friend and I trapped aboard the Big "E" in the early 80's. We had gone to "A" school together which was actually TF-30 school in San Diego The second class to graduate. The COD crew attempted to get us to eat lunch prior to the flight. Lol. We were not that dumb! And they banked it at the break almost 120 degrees to get us to Ralph (joking) really well about 45 degrees at least! The arresting gear sounded like a loud Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz sound. We got an Ok 3! Of course they wanted to see if we puked but we outsmarted them. We were seated looking aft and could see sky thru a small opening as the cargo door was not completely raised up and we didn't eat prior. We are briefed on escaping thru the hatch and that opening became my second go to. You never know. It was kind of neat to have caught the wire and trapped as not everyone gets the chance. I did cruises on America, twice on E both about 8 months, Nimitz twice, and Connie. Retired early, brown shirt, and engine mech-a-nik. Also got a Helo ride on an H-3 off a supply ship off of Oman. Maybe the USS Sacramento in 84. That Helo had a hard landing on deck (loss of power) and I was ordered to get on it and fly to Masirah island which I flat out refused. It was getting dark and there were sharks in the water. But also, I mentioned those in charge that Helo required a hard landing inspection so I left the next morning for an uneventful 5 mile trip and then flew on to BIOT Diego Garcia in an Air Force C something or other and there we watched movies on the beach and got to drink beer and kick sand at the same time. Fun times!

    • @COIcultist
      @COIcultist 4 роки тому +4

      You are afraid but after it all goes wrong options are available. I'm a Brit. Our new large (OK not that large to you) carriers can only take F35s Boeing Ospreys and we are still hanging our airborne early warning radar in an inflatable bag out the side of helicopters.
      Wept the US Navy got rid of the worlds best fighter (Notionally) because of its cost per hour of flight time. Then they want to introduce new planes that cost the earth and have low reliability and availability.
      How on Gods earth can you not have a low cost replenishment aircraft for a catobar aircraft carrier? Osprey lift weight OK but no range, even if one is working.
      I curse the Us Navy but how did the Royal Navy forget that we had key personnel jumping out of Hercules to parachute into the ocean in the South Atlantic in 82 to join the fleet.
      Why can't you have a simple replenishment aircraft?

    • @barringtonwilson4794
      @barringtonwilson4794 6 років тому +5

      I know this is really late but no one answered you. They can absolutely hold a standard pallet in the back. Actually can even fit an engine for an f35 in there (I think there's about a quarter inch of clearance between it and the ceiling). To the boat we can carry up to 26 passengers or around 10,000lbs of cargo. Youd be surprised how much can get shoved in that cargo space.

    • @joescheller6680
      @joescheller6680 5 років тому +1

      it was wide enough for a pallet but very seldom used them, all cargo was put in a cage to withstand a launch and trap, when you go from stop to go in 3 seconds airborn anything lose would be like a trajectile inside the cargo area and all passengers and crew were in the aft of the cargo. it was the same dimension from behind cockpit to the ramp.
