  • The Metroid Prime games have quickly become some of my all time favorites, and today I'll be reviewing each one. These three games are all great in their own way, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing through all of them. And thankfully Metroid Prime has become a current topic again thanks to the new incredible remaster. Here's hoping Prime 4 isn't too far away. Thanks for Watching!

One of the best things about these games is the world building. From the lore to the architecture, there's rime and reason to everything you do and see. Scanning the floating platforms in Phendrana Drifts, for example, explains how they're being levitated, and you can just straight up see the propulsion mechanism yourself. I love these games, can't wait for my copy of Prime Remastered to arrive!

Man, Metroid Prime has been a trilogy of game I've played for my very first time fairly recently. I played through Prime 1 when I bought a GCN in January 2021. It took me a while to get into it and learn the controls but man I was impressed. I would still rate it a solid 10/10 game. I love everything about it. I then bought my Wii U second hand(got a good deal on it 150 for the system, 3 games, 3 wii mote, 2 3rd party wireless nunchuke, 1 3rd party USB controller, and all the little nick knacks too) in Jun of 2022. I factory reset the system and connected my nintendo account to it and merged my switch account with it. I then bought the wii trilogy for just $20. Much better than finding a loose version for $80. I played through Prime 2 over winter break and that is another solid title. At that point I was going "Why the hell is this not on Switch? These are some of the best games I've ever played, I don't understand it". Then I looked up metroid sales numbers and I understand why. Even though the metroid games are always at least a 8/10 they do not sell well when compared to Mario or Zelda. I finished up 2 and then jumped into 3. And 3 is a lot different from 1&2. It being on the Wii means jankey motion controls. But so fat I've enjoyed myself with it. Having the ship be another piece of equipment to use and upgrade is neat. Traveling around is a little clunky. 1&2 had one map which all connected to one another. In 3 its separated into little sections on the planet. But maybe it will give me that wow moment if I play it some more.
What's even more crazy is I've technically always liked metroid prime even when I didn't know the games existed. Thank you Sakurai for making Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I would say Brawl is where I really experienced my love of gaming story modes and music. In the Sub Space Emissary there's a few missions where you play as Samus. The music that plays in parts of them is Prime 1 menu select theme. This right here is what I loved about metroid prime even though I didn't know these games existed. And thank God for Brawl in general for preserving gaming history to that point and to expose different and obscure games to new players.
I'm so glad Prime 1 got a remake, it desperately needed to get one. Just so that more people can play it. I would of liked the trilogy but they might release a remaster of 2 next year in 2024, Prime 3 in 2025, then finally Prime 4 in 2026. One can hope. Glad to see you review this amazing game series

Metroid Prime was the first Metroid game I ever played to completion and I've always gotten bashed for having this opinion, but I hated how the story was told. 2 and 3's very forward approach of involving Samus was so much better IMO. Even if 3 suffered from 7th gen FPS tropes other games were skyrocketing with at the time.
Still, all 3 games are classics. Now time for Hunters.

The amount of enjoyment you can get out of Prime 1 totally depends on how much you like scanning lol. I really liked it, but I do prefer the narrative style of Prime 2 more overall

  • @ExtremeAce

I love all 3 games for different reasons. And that's a good thing, a trilogy shouldn't feel all the same and I'm glad Retro had the courage to make each entry feel vastly different from each other. If you want classic Metroid in 3D, you have Prime 1. If you want a darker and tougher experience, you have Prime 2. And if you want a more cinematic and action styled Metroid, you have Prime 3. My personal favorite is Prime 2, but I really like 1 and 3 as well. I always replay the trilogy once or twice every year, it's almost like a tradition for me now. And with Prime 1 having got a remastered, it's making me desparate to see a Prime 2 and 3 remastered with the same amount of love. I really hope Retro gives us those remasters, even if they release after Prime 4 if they want to take their time with it!

Prime 1 is my favorite game of all time, and 2 and 3 are probably in my top 20. I bought a Gamecube when Prime 1 was released specifically for that game, which I had been following for years after the first trailers were released in like 2000. 2 and 3 I didn't have to play with the same desperation, but I did get around to both of them and ended up loving them as well. I love how each has it's own feel but they also all have a cohesion that makes them work well together. Prime 1 is a space epic with a knight exploring the ruins of a fallen civilization to slay a dragon and free the world from corruption. 2 is a survival horror through hell itself to face the knight's doppelganger. 3 is a sci-fy miniseries about clashing super powers and the fate of the galaxy with the knight leading the charge all while dealing with a corrupting illness. For me, all three games are 9.X/10 titles, and some of the best games ever burned to laser disc.
Also, about the Aurora units, they were intended to be a nod to Mother Brain from Metroid and Super Metroid, implying that she may have been an Aurora unit herself (this is left vague but implied). For me, personally, I thought they were really cool because of that. Following the orders of AI units that parallel Samus's greatest foe was an awesome easteregg.

Great video! I disagree with how you think the Prime Trilogy is tacked into the timeline between Metroid 1 and 2. I believe that the events of Metroid 1 happen, then the prime trilogy happens, then something with Prime 4 happens that convinces the Federation that the metroids should be destroyed, leading into Metroid 2, which then leads into each other game in succession. In Prime Federation Force, Cylux steals a metroid being kept in the federation, which could lead into prime 4 having some sort of big metroid thing go down, leading to the Federation ordering Samus to destroy all remaining metroids. It all depends on how they handle Prime 4 to see if the games are tacked on in the timeline or not.

I played the first two games when they came out and I remember being disappointed with Prime 2 at seeing what I felt were some Halo-inspired elements (honestly, my first thought at seeing those troopers overwhelmed in that early cutscene was, "oh look, it's the flood"). They even added a multiplayer battle mode which felt like heresy to me and like the devs were caving in to what mainstream gamers expected from FPS games at the time. And I didn't like how Samus was made to look less realistic and more like an anime barbie in Prime 2's ending.
That's part of why I thought the first Prime was a masterpiece which felt fresh while still being faithful to the Metroid formula (and the scanning was a way of giving people lore details without interfering with that). The second one was a good game for sure but one which also rubbed me the wrong way a bit. I couldn't shake the feeling that Prime 2 was trying to alter the series to appeal to non-Metroid fans who wanted more edginess, more story, and more twitch FPS action.
Saying all that, it would be interesting to play them again and see how I feel. Maybe I could appreciate Prime 2 more now. Also, I've never played the third one because I never had a Wii. I do have a Wii U and I've thought about trying out the trilogy (and I know the eshop is closing for good soon). I'm just not big on motion controls.

They are pretty good games, I got a trilogy Steelbook on Wii pretty cheap towards the end of its cycle and my corruption was bugged(hits don't register on the creature with wave beam targets using the visors) at the halfway point of Phaaze, so I never got to finish it, but all of the rest was amazing back in the day.

Why do people keep saying that there's a fetch quest at the end of the game? You're supposed to visit the Chozo temple as soon as you get missiles and collect the artifacts as you go along. That's the way I've always played it since the first time I played on Wii a few years ago. It never occurred to me that people would wait until the to start looking. You do a lot less overall backtracking if you just go back and pop every missile door you spotted once you get the missiles. It's the same thing with bombs. I spend a few minutes going back to blow up every bombable wall I spotted before moving on.
