I did not like Echoes, specially the dark world and the constant dmg, it felt like playing on a timer all the time, very stressful, not my cup of tea and the third entry finished last in my book, mostly cause of the gimmicky motion control scheme. Super Metroid isn’t just the definitive Metroid game, it’s likely the most refined side-scrolling platformer ever made. Easy to access, difficult to familiarize, and even more difficult to master, it contains layers upon layers of nuance that game designers are still trying to approximate nearly 30 years later. Limited only by the technology of the time in which it was made, Super Metroid is about as close to a perfect game as you can get. I’m glad that’s still recognized.

I love the fact that I got into this series already as an adult, so there's no nostalgia attached when I say that the Metroid series is one of the best franchises to ever come out. I tried playing Super Metroid as a kid and it didn't land with me, I was really confused all the time, so I dropped it and never played another game in the franchise. Then, fast forward to, I don't know, 15 years later and as I was watching The Completionist's video on Super Metroid, I got the urge to try the game again just because of how passionate he was when talking about it. And then it clicked and I instantly enjoyed the game. Not only that, but I got on such a roll that after beating it I played Zero Mission, Fusion, Samus Returns (and the unnoficcial AM2R) and Metroid Prime, all back to back! I went from only knowing Samus from the original Smash on the N64 to becoming a huge fan of the franchise in less than a year, such is the power of this franchise!

The movement in Super just doesn’t compare to Dread. And more importantly, the level design is quite simply obtuse. Im not young, so I’m well aware that’s how games were designed at the time, but that doesn’t make it good.

@@fury_saves_world Super has developer intended sequence breaking. In prime you must use the ever living shit out of glitches to sequence break anything. Besides the backtracking in Prime is tedious. Prime 2 masterfully solved that issue
I have like played Prime 1 like 40 times in my life. All of these games countless of times. And let me tell you how absolutely tedious some backtracking is. Especially the space jump boots, X ray visor, plasma beam and gravity suit.
I played Metroid games so many times infact that I forgot my first playthroughs, so these games are ranked on personal enjoyment based on combat, backtracking and replayability. Fusion is on top due to a bias, but as for Dread, Prime, Prime 2, Super it’s based on personal fun and replayability

My personal List from the games I’ve played:
10 Metroid: has anyone that I played this game in the past 20 years really enjoyed it?
9 Other M: A decent action game that makes a lot of stupid story decisions.
8 Zero Mission: why do some people like this game so much? It’s 10x better than the original and is an amazing remake but as a Metroid game it’s just so average
7 Samus Returns: 95% of the hate this game gets has nothing to do with the actual game. A great stepping stone for Dread and is very fun to play
6 Super Metroid: I’m sorry if this placement physically hurts you and I acknowledge that Super Metroid is a feat of level design genius but it’s just not that much fun and unintuitive
5 Corruption: Even the prime games at their worst are still amazing. The motion controls are tacky but the bosses and levels are fantastic
4 Fusion: weak level design and exploration is made up for by being atmospheric, hard, and very fun to play in an arcadey sort of way
3 Echoes: I’m convinced you have to play this game 2-3 times before the frustration goes away and you see it for the most bold and interesting game in the series
2 Dread: it’s just peak 2D Metroid and is nearly flawless
1 Prime: it’s perfect. Just go play the remaster right now

Metroid prime 2 echoes was the hardest game i ever beat, "I'm a SoulsLike fan BTW", but its difficult isn't about fight enemys or bosses, the hardest thing in this game is to know where should you go next, the most part of the time you will be lost, thats a common thing on metroid games but its get worse on Prime echoes because of the dark world, sometimes you need to cross the dark world through portals to reach an objective in the light world and the portals are tricky, some need special things to be activated or its only functional in one of the two worlds, its a very challenging game.

Prime 3 and Samus Returns should switch spots. Prime 2 and 3 improved on the first in terms of story and environmental design. I'd go as far as saying that Prime 3 has some of the best environmental designs in any Nintendo game. Bryyo and Elysia had a really nice aesthetic.
I think Dread was really good and refined 2D Metroid a great deal, but I think its environments and OST are forgettable. I don't think it had as strong a sense of Dread as Fusion or Prime 2. The EMMIs only being a threat in specific areas removed some of the tension for me since you never had to worry about them popping up in regular areas, like you did the SA-X and Dark Samus. I also think that Dread didn't do enough with Raven Beak as a character. You meet him once at the beginning and don't see him again until the end when he gives you a plot dump, and then you kill him. I was hoping they'd make him a rival on par with Dark Samus or Ridley, but since they've killed him off after one title that seems to be off the table. Dread also didn't explain the fallout from Fusion very well. It was odd to see Samus still working for the Federation after the events of Fusion. At the very least, the game could have touched on how the Feds addressed the rogue groups within their ranks. There are some interesting story implications in Dread that they can continue with in future titles, though.

    • @theclaudfather6436
      @theclaudfather6436 Рік тому

People always bring up how the EMMI's aren't a threat because you only encounter them in certain areas but praise SA-X and Dark Samus but fail to realize that them "popping up" is a scripted part of the game. Just admit your opinion is based on the voice of the Internet and you have no opinion of your own.

    • @Dzzy123
      @Dzzy123 Рік тому

@@theclaudfather6436 We know the SA-X and Dark Samus are scripted. The point is that, on a first playthrough, the player doesn't know when these enemies will pop up. In Dread, however, this isn't the case. In Dread, you always know beforehand where the EMMIs can appear.

nailed the top 3 tbh, although i would be tempted to put prime 2 echoes in the number 3 spot.
Prime 2 imo could be better that prime 1 its soo damn good, but i do understand why people love prime 1 more.
It's just a simpler version of prime, and it uses all of the classic biomes from super metroid which are hard to argue with, same with why ocarina of time is so great. it's alot easier for people to get a grasp of and feel a stronger connection to using the four elements.
Snow, fire, forest and desert, then phazon mines, as opposed to echoes light and dark worlds across the temple grounds, bog and sky temple.
But i love the power ups and bosses in prime 2 and the mechanics with the light and dark beams. great to have the screw attack back and wall jumps, and dark samus is a great villain. also the maps are across a much larger scale and i love the morphball canons across the map.

Super is great don't get me wrong but personally I never liked how floaty Samus feels, and things like the wall jump and overall movement feel a little clunky. It's still the best sprite based Metroid though easily, game is gorgeous
Dread is in a weird spot for me. Game feels...incomplete but not like Pokemon did. Everything works but the ending is really abrupt, there's strange blank areas on the map and doors that go nowhere. Supposedly the development of the game was troubled and they had more in store but ran out of time and it certainly feels that way at times. Movement feels phenomenal in Dread but I really don't like the speed booster and invisibility being mapped to pressing down on the joystick. Speed booster especially feels really awkward and I wish it was automatic like ZM/Fusion. I liked the story but I honestly didn't like Samus' characterization that much. Sure she was cool but she didn't feel like Fusion Samus at all which was jarring since Dread is a direct sequel

I love Dread totally, but hated the introduction which was poorly written. Also, Dread tries to be mysterious about Samus being a ……. But we know that from Fusion already. So the story to me is- Dread just replaced Galaxtic Federation with Raven Beak and Metroid’s/Space pirate X variants with Chozo robots and dead X soldiers. Also music in Dread is subpar. Bosses in Fusion (not saying better than Dreads-which were great) were more diverse. I wish Dread just had a better twist to the Chozo/Metroid lore. Otherwise gameplay was awesome, just wish Dread had more organic environments-they all feel too similar-more backstories to bosses. And anyone sad Samus didn’t have the chance to absorb the experiment Z-57 parasite? What skill could that be?! It would be sweet if you could gain slightly different built which would affect your playthrough. Overall, it might be one of the best 2D Metroids, but it still lacks in comparison to Super/Fusion. I can’t wait now for more Prime remakes! Thanks for the great video!

Super Metroid is definitely the best Metroid. It’s atmosphere and graphics are unmatched. Fusion is also a big contender.

Samus Returns marked the franchise’s return, Super Metroid may be superb, but I found Metroid Prime to be a prime example of good game design.

I’m so thankful we got the Prime Remastered, now I just new Super Metroid remastered with Dread’s controls.

Super Metroid doesn't control flawlessly, there are some things that were handled better in the GBA games. Like the quick selection of missiles, not having the run button, easier wall jumping (the wall jumping in the SNES game is a little unreliable) and not having to use five missiles to open a red door. But there are hacks that fixes these things, making the game even better.

Great list! I do agree that Super Metroid should be #1 for the sole reason at how incredible the level design is and is still the best one of all Metroid. Games to this day try to meet the quality of level design of Super Metroid and it's the game that really created the Metroidvania genre

@@starchild4627The only way I can see MP4 topping Super is if the game turns out to be the Ocarina of Time of the Metroid series (in terms of the impact and innovation)

Super and Prime are blinding people with nostalgia. Dread is #1, Prime #2 and Super #3

My first exposure to Metroid was dread, so I have no nostalgia for any of these games. I fell in love with the franchise and since then have beat, samus returns, dread, super Metroid, fusion and am currently playing prime remaster. That being said NOTHING compares to Super Metroid. The feeling of isolation, claustrophobia, and exploration it can achieve is unmatched. The asthetics, the level design, the atmosphere put it in a tier on its own.
The entire game has a less is more approach that has its own unique charm. The minimalistic story is beautiful, the almost non existent tutorials for upgrades and direction of progression is refreshing. The game remains mysterious in a way due to its reserved story and information it provides you.
    What a masterpiece

Honest the only changes I'd make, are:
    3rd: Super Metroid
    2nd: Metroid Dread
    1st: Metroid Prime
For one reason. As great as Super Metroid is, and it is fucking fantastic, at times it borders on obnoxious when it comes to progressing/exploring. But that might just be me. Otherwise, pretty spot on list.

Metroid Dread is a perfected carbon copy of Super Metroid. It’s like putting Ocarina of Time at the top of every list instead of saying “it changed the game forever, but it’s been improved upon”.

All the Metroid games are good, except the one which will not be named, the real answer is whichever you prefer to play. For me, that's Super Metroid, for a lot of others that will be Prime, Zero Mission, Prime Echoes, Dread.
