No scientific or technological advancements for 1000 years until the Rennaisance. You can see the utter lack of sophistication reflected in their military tactics when they fight outsiders. The knights were awesome fighters individually because they trained that way, for tournaments and whatnot. They had zero ability to fight together, as a unit. Battle of Legnica, Battle of Mohi River, Battle of Nicopolis. They were clueless as to how to achieve success as a cohesive army. Or how about the First Crusade (the People's Crusade)? Nearly 100% eliminated by the Seljuk Turks.

I really hope that, despite how much time and energy it takes to make long videos like these, you will continue to put together long videos like these, whether making series of your existing videos, or brand new ones. Thank you for making this video... I really enjoyed it.

    Like the time his army retreated and he raced ahead the get food and supplies ready for them, shows the type of guy he was.
    Richard had funds granted. But to travel so far in the time that it was and to put up a solid fight was impressive.

    Hey my brother I must say I truly enjoy your history research narrative and expository telling. The fact that you pronounce place names correctly as they were called in that time period shows the depth and accuracy of research you bring to your program and each individual episode. I especially appreciate your understanding of the relationship between Richard and Saladin. Given my understanding of human nature I would venture to say they both the respected and appreciated each other more than they did their backstabbing half-stepping countrymen and so-called allies. Yeah both of them were betrayed by their so-called allies, Richard by French allis and Saladin by his Emirs . I do believe both of those leaders were men of God following their God the god of their understanding to the best of their ability with honor and chivalry. I salute your effort as a historian and truly appreciate what I see plainly and clearly as your labor of love. Bon vie Mon ami 😊

The Sultan was wroth thereat and left the battlefield in anger

    A really exciting narrative. I realise how strange our vision of nationalities for these characters is . "King of France" : "France" is only a region around Paris; this part speaks french....but the rest speaks provencals, flemish (Belgians or netherland ?) , Lorrain (oh ! maybe they are german !). Richard king of England...but his mother and his father were fren....oh no ! they spoke occitan. He had probably a high number of occiitans than Brittish in his army as he ruled over twice more "french" than "english". Guy de Lusignan speaks french, i believ but he is the former king of ...Jerusalem. The only thing that counts is the title, the higher they had and it is not representative of todays geogrphy. Ah never forget that all these guys are rivals .

      ....or England is a part of the Plantagenet possessions. They come from Anjou and Aquitaine and were dukes and counts there before reigning over England. Henri II is born in Fance (Le Mans) Alienor grew at Bordeaux and is buried at Fontevrault, Richard is born at Oxford, but he died in France and is buried at Fontevraut too. Did they speak english ? Just bribes. England, France has no sense at this period . I know history.

    A great overview of the 3rd Crusade!

  • @alexanderb5726
    @alexanderb5726 10 місяців тому +3

    Richard did not loose a single battle against Salah-Al-Din, recaptured the entire coastline and its trading cities, and had probably easily taken Jerusalem back as well if only he would've had a united front. The Muslims were bankrupt on morale from having their army almost destroyed against the Crusaders as well as Saladin failing to recapture Jaffa, so they might well have surrendered the city had a united crusader army reached its gates. The third crusade may not have achieved its main objective of taking the Holy City, but in terms of battles won and gains made, it was a success and victory. Many chastise Richard for a ruler who put England in poverty with his wars, ignoring his monumental contributions for Christendom, as well as the fact that he was shown to be a capable manager from a young age, controlling the rebellious factions of his Angevin holdings in France. He was coming home to sort out affairs in Britain, but it was hardly his fault that was captured and died before reaching England. Had he managed the journey, he could've well stabilized the realm and maybe prevented the First Baron's War in revolt against his brother.

    • @robert-surcouf
      @robert-surcouf 10 місяців тому

      For being captured, it was Richard's fault to made a feud with the germans in his journey to the holy land and he reached England in 1194 while dying in 1199.
      Unfortunately for him, he was more a general than a ruler and know how to win battles but not how to end wars.

    • @alexanderb5726
      @alexanderb5726 10 місяців тому +4

      @@robert-surcouf To my knowledge it was a mutual feud and not just Richard being a jerk for no reason. And so not I can't agree that being imprisoned by supposed allies in crusade was his fault.
      As I said, we do not know what would've happened had he made his way back to England unhindered. By indications of his early life in Normandy he did possess some administrative skill. So to just say he was worthless as a king is without merit in my book.

    • @robert-surcouf
      @robert-surcouf 10 місяців тому

      @@alexanderb5726 For the mutual feud, yes and no.
      Leopold had put his flag alongside Richard's and Philippe's flag at Acre as the HRE biggest noble even if he wasn't a king and Richard's men threw the flag down.
      It seems also but it's not proven that Richard publicly insulted Leopold.
      After the feud, Leopold quit the crusade and Philippe made the same not so long after for different reasons.
      Richard was indeed imprisoned by fellow crusaders but the crusade was already over and it was in HRE lands, not holy land.
      If Richard had come back sooner, it will be likely that Philippe and John scheming will not be so damaging but the revolt will hapenned for all of Richard's life whatsoever.
      In his early life, Richard didn't manage Normandy but the county of Poitiers since 1170 then the duchy of Aquitaine in 1172 because Henry the younger was supposed to inherit their father's land as the first born and Richard will inherit their mother's land as the second born (Henry 2 was only duke consort of Aquitaine as Aquitaine will not stayed with the angevin empire after Henry's death but Henry's the younger death changed everything)

    • @alexanderb5726
      @alexanderb5726 10 місяців тому +1

      @@robert-surcouf I'm aware of the flag incident but we don't know the context. Could be that Leopold claimed the city as if it was all his own doing which Richard's men then understandably took issue with. We don't know.
      I also know of when and where he was imprisoned but over or not, they were allies just returned from conquering in the Holy Land. To imprison a king over a something which from what we know seems to add up to a simple squabble is highly uncalled for. It could just as well have been done out of jealousy by Leopold at Richard's momentous success on his own in the Third Crusade.
      "If Richard had come back sooner, it will be likely that Philippe and John scheming will not be so damaging but the revolt will hapenned for all of Richard's life whatsoever." I think that is speculation. Richard was widely charismatic and a harsh ruler. To say the revolt was inevitable even if he was there is to underestimate the effect of strong kings. I still conclude that we do not know whether he would've performed well or poorly since he was never given the chance to return to England.

    • @robert-surcouf
      @robert-surcouf 10 місяців тому +1

      @@alexanderb5726 You're right that we don't know the context but the only facts accepted was that Leopold flag was threw and everything else is just assumption.
      They were allies in holy land but they don't returned at the same time and their alliance end when the crusade end.
      The reason for Leopold imprisonned Richard is likely petty and he will be punished by the pope but Leopold was smart enough to not keep Richard and give him to the emperor instead.
      When i talk about revolts, it's not only about those made by Philippe or John but by any noble whose vassal to Richard.
      The plantagenet empire at the late 12th century was diverse with england, part of Wales, Ireland and half of france and ruling it was hard, especially for someone like Richard who was more a general than a king and had never showned that he was politically brilliant but it's still assumptions.

    S-Tier content as usual, but as I was listening from the other room, something hit my ear and gave me pause. The bit about King Philip landing at the siege of Acre on 4/20 1191 bringing 'vital supplies of grain and corn.' 18:54
    Corn (as we now think of it) being a New World species would be totally unavailable for another 300 years, so I looked it up. Apparently, the English have been using the term 'corn' to refer to various foodstuffs such as oats, barley, and wheat for ages. Next time you see any medieval sources talking about corn in Europe, trip ye not citizen, for they're just talking about other grains/crops. TIL.

    30:25 before dying, Frederick founded a Hospital Order, and sent a message to his brother, now Emperor Henry VI, to approve of this Order, in 1199 this Order would also be approved of the Pope and would be known as the Order of the Holy Mary, in other words the Teutonic Knights.
