Beset on all sides by tough competition from the Fractal North, Lian Li Lancool III, 216, and Hyte's own Y60, the Y40 struggled to make a mark when it came to thermals. Build quality is good, but watch the review for the caveats!

I have not used an SATA SSD or SATA HDD in years, and neither have most of my PC friends, even at work now. So the lack of space for them would not bother me. If you are building a new PC these days with the new chips, an AIO liquid cooler is almost needed anyway, so I like cases that focus towards that. I would never buy this case for air cooling, but would seriously consider it if I was building a new unit and use a nice AIO. I guess this review doesn't help me with that thinking.

They should make a case that's a triangular prism, with square sides, a triangle base, and a triangle top. That way, it would fit the corner of a room. They could fit the motherboard IO into a compartment that allows you to route the cables through the bottom of the case, letting it sit flush with a corner. Or, they could let the motherboard IO poke out of recesses in the side faces that can be covered by a plate when not in use. It would look unique and cool. They could call it the Y80.

I think in a way this is what they were doing. From what I gather, the case was designed for an AIO to be mounted on the side by design.
In fact if you look at their own site, any time the case is shown with any fans mounted in it at all, there's always an AIO on the empty side mounting area.
With an AIO factored in, the case comes with only the fans needed to get adequate cooling to all components.

Im running an i9-13900 with a 360MM Galahad and a PNY XLR8 4070ti with 2 Lian Li fans on the side, one on the bottom, and one in the rear, plus the 3 on the AIO ofc. IDK, maybe im just not a picky as some, but I love the set-up, though again, I wouldve preferred the chopped corner. I will never for the life of me understand why anybody still buys Corsair. Owning a Y40, I definitely agree with some of the points about airflow being average. I was getting ready to get roasted by the review for my choice over the Y60 for the extra graphics ventilation, but it wasn’t as bad as I expected.
The system copes pretty well overall with a full complement of fans and a side mounted 240 AIO. The lack of full height expansion card support is a bit of a pain considering I wanted to get a Thunderbolt 4 card, but I have a few ideas of how I can mount one behind the graphics card vertically 😉
The fans are configured as recommended in the user guide:
    Top Exhaust
    Rear Exhaust
    Side Intake
    Bottom Intake
    Specs:
    I5-13600k
MSI Z790 MPG Carbon Wifi (why aren't the diag segment displays on cheaper MSI boards 😢)
    MSI Ventus 3X RTX 3080ti
    32gb (2x16) Corsair Dominator 5600
    5 x Thermaltake Pure 12 ARGB fans
    Thermaltake TH240 ARGB AIO
    Thermaltake GF3 850w PSU
    EDIT:
The temps from running through a pass of Timespy extreme, so not prolonged, but an idea of what it would be like. Definitely not to any standard of testing. Massive props to GN for the quality there!
    Ambient: 28c/83f (Because 'straya)
CPU Max: 91c/196f (with a rough negative voltage offset applied, gaming is typically more around the 50-60c mark)
    GPU Max: 78c/173f (stock)
Fan RPM Max: 1300rpm (still plenty of headroom with my fan curves)
Came out with an overall score of 9447
I wanted an aesthetic build that wouldn't choke off the graphics card. I feel like it's delivered. I certainly would love lower temps, but these are certainly low enough for me that I'm not too concerned.

You just install it and you have the best cooling configuration: 1) the CPU draws chill air from outside the case; 2) the GPU has a bit of extra chill air from the fan at the bottom. This is also why the bottom plate only has wholes till the midle: to assist channeling that air into the fans of the GPU when the GPU is installed in the vertical orientation. This seems like a very well thought out case for the specific group of people who want a showcase PC with vertical GPU mount. And this is the configuration GN didn't test at all.

    I have the Y40 with a 13900k and a Strix OC 4090.
I use a 360mm AIO for the CPU and replaced both fans with beQuiet Silent Wings 4 Pro to a total of 3x 140 and 4x 120mm (incl. AIO).
While gaming CPU and GPU are around 65°C, BUT this is only possible with an offset of -70mV for the CPU and 70% PowerLimit of the GPU with a noise level of 26db.
Nevertheless, I sure have not the possibility to compare it to other cases, but for me if works perfectly and I love the design.
Criticism that Hyte only adds 2 fans, I can agree 100%.

Thank you, big fan of your channel and your work! I totally agreed and laughed when you pull out the bottom filter, from opposite sides, design failed. I also appreciated and used the bottom cable tunnel you pointed out to hide the extra cables. The two included 120mm fans are a waste for me. I use a 140mm for the bottom and RGB fans to dress this case up. This case is slightly shorter as I can only install two 120mm fans on top; since I installed 280mm AIO cable up. From your video, 360 AIO on-the-top look is even worst. With all that, still I feel that you are being too tough on the Y40 and missed some highlights. I really liked the top side & rear panels that are made of steel and nicely painted. This is the best looking “clear corner” case on the market. It is solid built with a removable front glass (by removing six screws) which helps a lot with the built. My cooling is PRETTY GOOD with two 140mm side intake fan (w/AIO), one 140mm bottom intake; one 120mm rear and two 120mm top exhaust fans. My 6800XT fan only spins in games. Nonetheless, Hyte could improve on its design; such as reduce the screws holding the front glass and improve bottom air / fan design instead of the current ugly plastic black box. With everything considered, I still think this is a top looking case, solid built and reasonably priced; especially considering fans are the cheapest components on my build list.

However I will say this about included case fans--from my perspective the rule should be "go big or go home". Either include a full set of high quality fans (not RGB necessarily, just solid performance and not an eyesore) or nothing at all. I expect that nearly everyone who buys the Hyte Y40 replaces the fans, like I did. So, knowing that, why do they include fans at all? It's the easiest cost saving measure in the world.

First of all, they include a Pcie 4.0 riser for the vertical GPU mount. This is a massive saving compared to buying your own brackets and cables to suit like other manufacturers. Sometimes upwards of $100 aud. (Lian Li/Corsair)
I am also considering this case because of its vertical GPU mount, this is unique in it's own right, very hard to find a nice case that can handle a 360 Radiator + Vertical Mount + overall nice to look at.

I am surprised with how negative the overall was. I have always appreciated the standardized testing, but the reality is that nobody building in this class of case gives a rats backside about the included fans. You don't by a case that's got so much visibility without throwing in your own fans. I would of liked the case to be a couple bucks cheaper with no fans as the first thing I did when I got it is toss the fans. Same as I do with every case. I have a 280 AIO as intake with a 140 intake in the bottom. 3x 120's as exhaust on the top & no fan in the rear. I lack the testing equipment you have, but I can say definitively that this case is quiet & cool with a 5900x & a TUF 4080. One of the things I would love to see from your case reviews is the cases fully populated with the appropriate sized fans. Outside of the low end of cases it would paint a much more clear picture of the performance most of us can expect since even if its just the arctic bundle packs most folks will be populating most if not all fan locations.
It would also be a drawback for most enthusiasts if all fans were populated from the factory. The fans are one way that we now use to customize the aesthetics of a build. I know that of my 6 fans I have 3 different model fans all from the same manufacturer (NZXT in my case as I wanted the 140's on the side intake to have the backside RGB).

The Y40 is perfect. I personally think Hyte has the best-looking cases on the market. And i feel this review is somewhat biased. Just because they didn't include extra fans for thermals. That's sorta like intel, not supplying a cpu cooler anymore. Most people building a computer like to add their own fans, etc. Hyte supplies the locations. You add ur own fans. Im currently running a Corsair top mounted water cooler with exhaust fans. Two Corsair 140 mm intake fans. One Corsair 120mm exhaust fan. And the stock Hyte 120mm fan at the bottom beside power supply. All running through the icue software. Set color to solid white. And my computer runs nice and cool. No thermal issues at all. 9:37 IMHO, those bottom-intakes, and the shroud-through-vents seem actually quite clever. It directs air flow towards the glass side panel, which ultimately feeds fresh air to the GPU. Although, i DO see a flaw - there should be some kind of baffle, in order to redirect & avoid recirculation of spent/hot air at the bottom/near the PCIe end of the GPU.

    • @icehole503
      @icehole503 Рік тому +1

You are correct about the bottom vents. I can feel the hair being blown up in front of the GPU fans in mine if I take the side off. The re-circulation thing is valid, but what case doesn't have this as normally this air would be bouncing off the motherboard. And at the end of the GPU most new GPU's are flow though. I was worried about this initially blowing against the intake on the back of the case, but even in the review the temps were cooler with this vs side exhaust which would be the cleanest air flow.

Nice detailed review. I found the design and quality of the Hyte Y60 far superior in many ways. I built both the Hyte Y60 with the RTX 3080 Ti FE and also the Y40 with the RTX 4090 FE and ended up changing the Y40 for another Y60 as I am disappointed with the quality and design of the Y40 and also because the RTX 4090 Founders Edition is exactly 3 slots wide and fits in the Y60 anyway. The only advantages of the Y40 over the Y60 are the 4 vertical slots for the oversized GPUs and the lower dust filters that are easier to remove for cleaning. Other than that, it has no grommets to hide cables and has less space for cable management with the bottom fan installed. The single fan location beneath the plastic floor of the case is a nightmare for cable management and PSU connections (no dedicated chamber) and this fan proved to be absolutely useless for improving GPU and case thermals because the floor is only partially open for airflow, compared to the Y60 which has an open floor made of metal with a dedicated chamber for dual 140mm or 120mm fans just below the GPU. Also, the mounting location on top of the Y40 does not allow for a 280mm radiator to be installed and it overhangs the motherboard a lot, even hiding the RAM sticks by over 2cm (TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI motherboard used) which does not look good for RGB RAM. Also, it is not possible to install a rear fan with a Corsair H150i 360mm radiator installed on top, unless you only use 2 screws to install the rear fan lower, or drill an additional hole to fix it with at least 3 screws. No such problems with the Y60.

This video is extremely misleading... Who in their right mind would run their case with only the two stock fans that came with the case..? CPU temps were only 3c warmer than the Y60 once adding a proper fan setup and gpu temps even lower?

If you had any critical thinking skills then you would have listened when they explained why it was tested that way

@@tmbocelot Their reasoning is the company should provide more fans - 99% of people who buy cases that come with crappy stock fans simply swap them out for 3rd party fans anyways..? Hyte was able to make this case extremely affordable, even with things like the vert GPU mount, even running those graphs with 2 fans is stupid, OBVIOUSLY this case was not mean to be run with two stock fans ONLY lol . Not sure how you even found a year old comment but these guys are just nit-picking issues, the vast majority of people are going to load every possible space with 3rd party fans.

This review makes absolutely no sense.
While I do understand the need to use the same components from case to case, the case should not be air cooled. Condemning a liquid cooled focused case for poor thermals when only an air cooler is tested, is like saying a Toyota Corolla is a bad car, because it failed the off-road test. At 8:35, you specifically say the Y60 and Y40 are liquid cooling focused as well!! Yet no liquid cooled testing was done, just to even see the difference.
And then at 27:48, you proceed to say that if you want a $150 liquid cooling friendly case, then the Lancool is the way to go. This seems very hypocritical when zero information about the Y40's liquid cooling abilities were even discussed, except a weird section about radiator sizing. The Y40 fits a 240mm and 280mm side radiator just fine. As well as a top mount 360mm AIO, with no interference with RAM, the rear fan or any part of the system, I have tested all 3 and thermals are just fine with all configurations.
It seems like you went into this review, knowing that you were going to bash it, and I just don't understand.

Hello GN love watching your vids and you are my go to channel for sure. Thanks for your hard work!
I know its a bit unorthodox and Im not too sure if youd review it. But could you check out the Jonesbo D41 case? Is it too gimmicky? Or is it actually a functional case? The screen is a very unique feature I havent seen on any case before.
Also the PSU is located in the front of the case.

The Y60 case is sweet looking with that angled side and adding the lcd display onto it. Looks like they took a backwards step from the Y60 instead of improving on an already decent design.

Also of note just 4 months ago they rated the Hyte Y60 the best case of 2022! Now why are they showing its case temps to be shit compared to the big list of cases in this video? I smell something fishy.

I avoided the Y60 because GN said to avoid it for air cooled GPUs. So I picked up a Y40 as it had that fish tank look with no corner post. I'm fine with the thermals in it. Running AIO on top, 2x 140mm as intake on the side and a modest GPU 6750xt. The CPU hits and maintains 95c under torture (all cores boosting over 5ghz so it's not throttling, just aggressive boosting), but that's just zen4 being Zen4. I got the Y40 with full knowledge I'd be tossing the fans and doing it differently. I feel it's still a good case if you know what you're getting into and you really want the aesthetic.

Thermals have been good for me too, so far. I haven't done any torture tests. LOL. I just play my regular games. My AIO is on the side.

I'm usually on GN's side. But, this time, I strongly disagree with GN. The extremely harsh criticism on the matter of the 2 additional fans is very unjustified. It's not about "buy two additional fans". It's about "use the 2 fans which will come with your AIO anyway".
Hyte is pretty clear in the marketing that this case is built for AIOs. They write the max height of the radiator just to make the life easy for all those 12 people who will use it with an air cooler. Why would they complicate things, on purpose, and loose a couple of potential clients when it costs them... nothing (an additional line in the manual)?
Considering GN's frequent remarks about sustainability, avoiding single-use plastic, and other environmental subjects. I would have expected an actual praise from their side for building a case which doesn't force you to throw away 2 perfectly good fans in the first 10 seconds after unboxing. The standardized test here is a very wrong tests. It smells like lazyness from GN. All the video is about testing the case with an air cooler. No liquid cooling tested at all. Followed by a conclusion at the end : "lancool 3 is a better choice for liquid cooling".

Actually bought a new case recently. I settled on Antec DF700 Flux. Its been 2-3 months now and I love this case. Doesnt matter how big a gpu gets itl always fit. Quite suprised uve never covered that case. Its an $85 case that can fit a 360 top or front. It also has a 2nd intake zone on the other side panel that an intake fan sitting under the gpu pulls air from the side panel. It even comes with a full RGB/fan hub. I dont think its gets much better value for money.

Great review and content as always! ... but I think the info on the advertising rejection was information that maybe should have stayed internal. The review made its point of the product not being good, I think it's unnecessary to share this with the general public. IMHO.

The chart @19:18 shows the Lian Li Lancool 216 at the top for cooling under load but I’d like to point out that while the $114.99 ARGB version (white) includes two front mounted 160mm ARGB fans and a non-RGB 140mm rear exhaust fan…Lian Li doesn’t offer any matching ARGB fans to replace the plain exhaust fan or any of the other locations that could use them.
The closest matching ring-type ARGB fans I could find was a $29.99 CoolerMaster MF140 Halo for the rear exhaust and a $61.68 3pk of MF120 Halo to replace the Corsair LL120’s in my AIO. I’m sick of the RGB failing on the LL120’s and CoolerMaster fan quality isn’t good IMO but I took another chance and I’m sure glad I did since they look great.
My Godlike E-ATX MB easily fit inside the 216 and the same could be said for the Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC (but my EVGA RTX 2080 TI XC Ultra provided all the FPS I really ever needed. The 4090 is a waste IMO.)
Anyway, Lian Li is missing out by not offering those optional matching ring-type ARGB fans, plus they could offer optional riser feet, or even wheels, to increase the bottom air intake. I use a modified file cabinet caddy.
So $114.99+29.99+61.68= $206.66 + $13.71 for the optional magnetic front filter = $220.37 (+ tax) for a decent positive pressure case but the Lian Li 1.5mm mesh hole size allows more dust to enter than say the Phanteks 1.0mm mesh hole size so that’s something one may want to keep in mind.

I must admit, I still went with this case because I have a new AIO I plan on using. I’m very very excited, even if this case doesn’t perform thermally, that’s okay to me, because I had a 216x and it’s just.. kinda big, kinda boxy, not what I want for my build. Fantastic case. Just not what I’ve grown to like.
I’m okay with sacrificing a few degrees for something I love looking at
