I am currently learning this piano track, with no experience what so ever in piano. In 2 weeks i managed to learn the first verse. You might think its easy to memorise this piece but this man has the emotions to play this song so well.

I'd say the Gary Jules version is better for what it's been used for. The original was the best for its time and because it fit into the theme of the albumn. I think the original version was more for like the emo melancholy era it was written for but the newer adaptation really reflects its surroundings and the state of the collective universal emotion. Perhaps because I'm older now as well that I am not an angst filled teenager calling this place a Mad World. I actually know enough now at 35 that this place is absolutely mad in every way and getting worse.. Although it was used in a movie (Donnie Darko) to show it's original lyrical narrative where the world, as seen by a teenager, is absolutely mad. I think That the newer arrangement actually can capture not only what one feels when they see the world that way but I think the way he sings it and the tempo also allow the listener to be able to envision how mad it all really is no matter what age. I think it's safe to say that not only has the song evolved from its original but the listener also evolves right along with it and this song does change the perspective ,even if only temporarily, of anyone who listens to it. It actually has had quite a lasting effect on me since Donnie Darko. .
