This was so unhelpful. What a useless time-wasting video. Just remove the device that causes the deficiency. If i don't have a pad that removes the phosphate? Doesn't even address that. You talk about fertilizer but that doesn't solve any of the underlying issues. I could figure this out myself with google. Worthless.
4 yrs later and ur still helping us newbs with these vids 👊 but I been searching non stop and can never get a straight answer ... what is this anubius rot !!! Can u save the plant by cutting the rhizome or is it an urban legend cause I tried a few times but it always comes back 🤦♂️ I quarantine the last 3 anubius I bought for 1 month put them in with one of my big ones and then couple weeks later one has the rot and infected my big one 😒 now I cut the big one tossed that rotted one kept the other 2 but wonder do I toss the big one now 🥺 since it touches so many will it infect all of them 🤣 what is this rot !!!!
I have to say after researching aquariums for many many hours on the internet this channel is a God send. Dude. You know your stuff! I can generally find any info I need here and no one does a better job at presenting the information than this channel. Keep up the good work!
Most of this sounds like common sense when you explain it but some of us need that spoon fed to us cause no one talks about it! Thank you!!! I’ve had a planted tank for months and I honestly didn’t think about the food thing I just kept replacing the dying plants, knew about the melting back thing but I didn’t have a clue about the fertilizer. Been so worried about overdosing my tank, I want even thinking about feeding my plants! Thank you!!
I'm new to keeping tropical fish. Still haven't introduced any until I get the plant life up and running. Found your video extremely interesting. You were straight into the info....and I didn't have to listen to any waffle as I do by most other presenters.....some who start by telling about their recent illnesses LOL. Thanks indeed
Thank you for making these videos, I was a newbie try hard. Lol Not enough nitrogen sounds like my issue. Luckily just java moss. I've spent hours watching because you're so informative and it's put in an easy to understand format.
This makes sooooooo much more sense. I am new to the live planted aquariums and my poor Java Fern is taking a small beating since i am still learning. THANK YOU!!!
thank you so much for this Plant 101 series...I really appreciate the way you speak, I can follow the way you think beautifully and I personally really appreciate how well you stay on topic and don't spend time with how you feel about things outside the hobby....your videos are time well spent. I am in Taos, NM so I will not be in your store anytime soon!
That's really good advice on the Phosphate, people tend to think it's the cause of most algae. Also I've found with my set up I kept having an issue with GDA and I found it was due to low Phosphate and Nitrogen.
Ok I love how the big gold fish is back there photo bombing you at 4:49. He is in the back like hey look at me I’m on tv!!! He sits there for a little bit just staring at the camera!! Too funny!
Hard water has a high amount of Total Dissolved Solids. This is usually stuff like calcium or potassium or even things like sulfur. the higher the amount of Total Dissolved Solids, the harder the water is. Reverse Osmosis/De-Ionized water has zero (or close to zero) Total Dissolved Solids in the water, making it VERY soft. Plants usually like harder water because they can utilize the total dissolved solids as nutrients. Soft acidic tanks like discus or blackwater tanks (acidic, soft water) doesn't have a high amount of TDS, and plants don't tend to do well in these environments.
love your videos!!! Im researching plants and proper fish for a nanotank experiment that ive always wanted to do.... Ive never done live plants before, ( been afraid) but you have really helped me overcome that fear.... Thank you sooooo much!!!!#
So I just started getting into aquarium and believe me I have been putting the time, I have done research online for a few weeks straight you my man have not only gotten a new member but I will be buying your merchandise. Thank you so much for all these videos.
Thanks for all that you do. I'm learning so much from you Your awesome. I ordered your True Green. I think I'm trying to hard. I have 0 on everything . Tank been cycled for 4 months now. Thanks!🙂
Thank you so much for these videos, I am just starting up my first tank and am feeling more ready because of these informational videos. Excited for my order from your store! Thanks for helping us newbies to the hobby:)
Thanks for the info. Very informative! If a plant is struggling (brown leaves, etc.) and you start to dose, will it 'heal up' or do you just have to wait for newer growth to replace the unhealthy leaves?
I love the way you say, " when the fish go to the bathroom" ...super sweet!! Made me smile 😊 . I like the way you explained the plant using n old leaf to grow new ones, wow that's really interesting, your clear understandable & easy to follow. Thanks.for this informative video 📹 👏 👌 👍 So what I'd like to no is any fertiliser safe for the fish, or is it only specified aquarium fertiliser s that should be used. I no this video is old so don't no if your able to reply NO PROBLEM..
Love this video! I just started my planted tank and I am trying to have healthy baby tears that I inherited from a friend. They started turning a yellowish green color but I also see new growth. Not sure if over time, the new growth will overtake the old stuff that looks like it's dying. I am using Flourish Excel & I have the NPK combo. Tanks a 45 gallon with 30 tetras and 1 clown pleco. I am injecting CO2 with a citric acid & baking soda mix as well.
I love the flourish brands because I have control of the exact amount fertilizers i can use, for what I want instead of having to dose everything with one type of fert.
Please explain why the leaves of my S. Repens are falling off? I also have baby tears and that plant is doing good. I have LED lights, fertz, press. CO2, Oliver Knott substrate.
Very useful! I was getting worried of one plant i have and the solution was to trim the old leaves -.-' so obvious. Many thanks for the informations! Very useful
I want to say thank you. I've been trying to control my plants for the last month. New to planted tanks, just ordered some of your fert. Can't go wrong with over 250 5 star reviews!
What I have done with you're iron when setting up a tank I put some of youre iron supplements in the substrate and then use the easy green regularly and with in a month or two I have a jungle in my tanks
Cory, wet spot is selling their own fertilizer now, in a pump bottle. it literally looks exactly like yours with a different label on it. Just thought that was kinda interesting.
I have watched many of your videos and this one has really helped. No get a plant for new cycles tank, my minnows we're loving the this tall stem plant to sleep in at night. Within 3 weeks the leaves went brown and started dying but you have answered my question and hope that it's because it grew out of water, the smaller leaves look fine but my minnows have nothing left to sleep in because I had to cut the leaves off. Going to see how the plant does, I got a planted substrate bellow gravel and the bag says it will feed for up to 6 months so I am sure it can't be deficiency because I have other plants bought at the same time that are doing really well.
Thanks for this. Am a first time aquarium owner and was wondering why my anubias were turning yellow with holes while i was starving the tank to combat hair algae. Will now increase my liquid fert dosage and add glutaryl to get rid if the algae instead.
This series of videos and the one on making selling fish are why I subscribed. Super on point and helpful. Still diagnosing plant issues. Always learning . Thanks.
Thanks for the video, it's very helpful. My water source is extremely low in minerals and I found that water changes make more bad than good for the plants and I need to manually balance the plant nutrients.
Best aquarium channel on UA-cam by a long way love this channel and well delivered and informative videos keep up the hard work Cory love the show and the shop and what a fish room I'm now to the hobby and enjoying making my first aquarium and now planted tank do you ship to the UK
Hi Cory, thank you very much for the great info. Can I ask you a question please: when I add fertiliser for my plants I get really high nitrates in the following days requiring big water changes that impacts PH. Any suggestions on how to balance this?
Have you heard about eggshells? I haven’t done it myself, but in a regular plant garden you can soak them in water for 5 days, then use the water as fertilizer. I’ve seen people put them in directly into their tank.
I started a new Walstad method tank. I've been checking the nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and PH levels. Everything is fine but my plant's roots keep turning black and the leaves are turning transparent. Idk why I have root rot, I have organic soil and gravel as my substrate and I just added flourish tabs.
Still a great video. With your help, I may be able to keep my plants alive! My first plants had the roots turn brown and then turn to mush. Would that be a deficancy? I use EI method, root tabs and Eco complete substrate.
Thank you for this mate I can't tell you how helpful it been! I thought my Heteranthera was being eaten it looked bruised and see through with holes and it's gone a line green but I've never dosed ferts. And from this video it's just clicked that they are clearly starved of nutrients especially nitrogen and iron. It's weird my other tank is heavily dirted and not having issues or not nearly as many so I was so confused haha I'm such an idiot.
i transplant alot of my plants from rivers and brooks. So far its working great! be sure to rinse them off really good before you put them in the tank.
Super helpful. What deficiencies might cause Anubias after Anubias to die the day after I put them in and never come back, the roots and stem rotting away?
I find that typically in that case, the plant had rhizome rot. usually cutting away all the mushy parts can save it, but it would be best to claim the plant with the vendor and get a different one entirely.
Thanks for the tips setup a planted tank now know what to look for but is there any home made remedies to improve the iron and phosphate and so on in the tank?
Good info, one question though: isn't aiming towards a full cycle the most beneficial thing you can do in any tank? And even more so in a planted tank? With a full cycle there's less need for water changes, which is caused by anaerobic bacteria converting the nitrates into nitrogen, which in turn should help the plants immensely?
As usual, a quality video from Aquarium Co-op. Thanks. I think what's lacking though are ways to actually test your water for things like iron, potassium, etc. I'm left hoping my translation of your description can apply somehow to my sagging plants. Then it's a kind of a crapshoot as to how much is needed to supplement. Might be easy for the experienced. But there really should be a way to scientifically analyze the chemistry, non? If you want green grass in your yard you perform a soil analysis. If you want clean, clear water in your pool you do water analyses. Etcetera. As an aside, I'd like to see an objective analysis of the API product "Bio-Chem Zorb". This is a charcoal alternative which has done wonders for clearing the greenish tint from my tank, but which I suspect is robbing the plants of nutrients as well. Thanks Cory!
Great info. What ppm in nitrates would you recommend for Java fern and Anubias? I change my water before it hits 40ppm, but what would be the minimum nitrate level you'd recommend?
This guide is great, nitrogen deficiency here, no fish in my 190 Litre tank except 3 baby flying fox, and a few Amano shrimp. Although i do have a lot of algae growing, but my lights have been on 10 hours + when I've been in work and not had a timer. bought one yesterday. Hoping with the lights on less and 3 groups of small fish added it will settle...(Still unsure). If i add Fertilisers don't i stand the chance of algae getting worse?
Is there a plant that will, 1)...survive with Yellow Labidochromis, and 2) be able to live in a clay pot right in the middle of my 60 gallon aquarium. I don't want to plant in the actual sand since the cichlids dig so much. Someone let me know what they think! Great channel BTW!
Hey Cory! I hope this finds you well. I just had to tell you about my Dwarf Lily that I got from you. (Remember me? have a black thumb. Okay it goes all the way to the elbow, lol) Anyway, all my "kids" left was what looked like a dirt ball. I left it in there anyway, thinking maybe the "melting back" had just gone to the extreme in my case. I now have FOUR Lily leaves all the way to the top of my 125 gal and more coming up!! You sell sturdy plants! (they have to be to survive at my place!) THANKS!

I’ve always love watching these old videos because it feels like I am in a fish class.
I have never tossed a dying plant lol so far they all pull through eventually. If only fish did the same :’(
True. So long as the root system is still alive thats all that matters. Dying plants can bounce back up and flourish again.
this is by far the most informative and helpful guide I've ever come across for plant deficiencies - THANK YOU!

I have watched at least 3 other videos about aquarium plant care and this one is the most useful by far! So detailed, thank you so much!
I love the Plants 101 course! Please keep doing it! I'm new on this hobby and I'm learning a lot! Sorry about my english, I'm brazilian.
Your english is perfect! Thanks for watching Eduardo.

Please help

Thanks for the compliment :)
not only is your video very helpful but your gold fish are absolutely beautiful!
Super helpful tips, thank you!
Please share a video with an actual fish tank as an example. So that we can see an example of dosage for mid/low/high planted tank
can I put in banana plants to help with potassium? ;)
Sure, get a pacu and feed them bananas they love it.
UM it was a joke

Will these liquid fertilizers harm the fish?
Ok, thank you Garry for your reply, I appreciate it. ;-)

Good timing on this vid, I've got plants that has a leaf turning yellow. Yesterday I trimmed the leaf, but now I know the plant was feeding itself.
Yeah, so either it needs more nitrogen, or it was an emersed grown leaf that it was consuming.
Thank you for your video's, i have learnt so much, your a great teacher :-)
4:51 That goldfish behind that CO2 bottle literally cracks me up-🤣🤣🤣
Grateful i found this video so I could identify the problem and correct it.
thanks Cory for always putting out amazing videos
Hi Cory, thank you very much for the great info. Can I ask you a question please: when I add fertiliser for my plants I get really high nitrates in the following days requiring big water changes that impacts PH. Any suggestions on how to balance this?
0:24 like the way you explained those types of people...definitely seen them
Legend, you just sorted my problem out. Thank you! New sub.
Great advice as always..and the plants you sell are amazing. Not to mention your fertilizer are fantastic
Great information! I never New what the different deficiencies looked like on the plants
Have you heard about eggshells?
I haven’t done it myself, but in a regular plant garden you can soak them in water for 5 days, then use the water as fertilizer.
I’ve seen people put them in directly into their tank.
this guys the most helpful guy ever
This chart could also apply to non-aquatic household plants. Nicely done.
Cory, you make beautiful videos. Thank you so much for sharing.
I started a new Walstad method tank. I've been checking the nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and PH levels. Everything is fine but my plant's roots keep turning black and the leaves are turning transparent. Idk why I have root rot, I have organic soil and gravel as my substrate and I just added flourish tabs.
try sand for cap
feed he plants like you feed the fish, is probably been a game changer for them! Thanks!
Still a great video. With your help, I may be able to keep my plants alive! My first plants had the roots turn brown and then turn to mush. Would that be a deficancy? I use EI method, root tabs and Eco complete substrate.
For a business man Cory is honest that’s why stick with him. I’m tired of being lied to and manipulated so company’s can get richer

Hey thanks alot cory you really give great advice with in-depth knowledge i really appreciate it
Ah... That explains why some of my new plant's are down in the dump's after 2 days. Grown outside water.
Just have to be patient.
Great info. What ppm in nitrates would you recommend for Java fern and Anubias? I change my water before it hits 40ppm, but what would be the minimum nitrate level you'd recommend?
I'd say the minimum I like to keep is 10ppm.
This guide is great, nitrogen deficiency here, no fish in my 190 Litre tank except 3 baby flying fox, and a few Amano shrimp. Thanks Cory seems I'm over cleaning my tank my poor anubias has a few yellow transparent leaves
So if we have a planted tank with fish, snails and shrimp what is the nitrate ppm level do we want to be at?
Hey Cory! I hope this finds you well. I just had to tell you about my Dwarf Lily that I got from you. (Remember me? have a black thumb. Hi Cory, love your videos sir. Can u tell me how to quarantine the plants I add to my aquarium?
Thanks
Only way to quarantine them would be to have another tank to quarantine them in.
