- A middle-range support mobile suit developed simultaneously with the RX-78 Gundam and the RX-75 Guntank as part of Operation V. Due to its role as an artillery support unit, the Guncannon's design prioritized durability over mobility and it was not equipped with any melee weapons. Similar to the Guntank, the Guncannon's main weapons were a pair of shell-firing cannons, chosen for their reliability over beam weapons. These cannons could be optionally swapped out for a pair of spray missile launchers. Unlike the Guntank, however, the Guncannon's generator output allowed it to equip a beam rifle. It was also equipped with a pair of head-mounted vulcan guns, hand grenades for attacking enemy strongholds and a chest gun.

to be fair a Guncannon has badass moments compared to a GM unless you count the ones used by the Iron Calvary Squadron.
Those Guncannon were only built for support purposes as they don't even have proper hands. They only have the shoulder cannons as their only armament which did jack shit on the bugus.
to be fair most dont go 1 on1 vs these spec of zekes, unless u count Kai in
iron cavalry squad are not bad anyway, they only lose because plot wanted them to lose. they knows exactly if their mobile suit are slow but pack a lot of firepower so they choose the best strategy for thick armor and heavily armed mobile suit, attack those zeeks from range and catch them off guard. their aim is perfect, they literally making saturation attack that normally cause heavy or even completely destroy mobile suit
These are Origin Guncannons, upgraded late war ones, yes, but inferior to Origin GMs in almost every way.

This is Gundam: the Origin version of the guncannon. Both the guntank and the guncannon werent developed as part of Operation V in the Origin, and im not sure they ever explicitly stated it shared the same armor as the gundam, as they seemed to be mass-production units.
And yet they got totaled.

In the original, they were all prototypes as the Federations mobile suits cuz up till then they didn't have any while Zeon does. Even with the powerful armor, many of the machines were destroyed in the attack on Side 7. And as early as episode 3 or 4 or whenever they escape to Earth, it's shown that not even the Gundam is invincible, as its shield, which is made of the same armor got shot up and torn up. Or when Sayla stole the Gundam and got its foot chopped off. xD
If all that can happen to the Gundam, the same is certainly true for the Guntank and Guncannons.

@@blahblahboii That if they had mobile suits, then what's the big deal about the feds having mobile suits. Origin literally just devolve it into simply feds just suck and it was just the kids Bright got stuck with who had any competence. It's simply less for the sake of having more giant robots fight each other.
In the original, the federation and zeon were at a stalemate even though zeon had the advantage in weapons technology. When the feds got on even footing along with having those kids and Bright, zeon started to lose. But it didn't take long at all for the Gundam to stop being special. In Origin, the Gundam isn't special from the start.
And I wouldn't be surprised if eventually when we cover the past again, that we'll have another Gundam before the Gundam BEFORE the Gundam BEFORE the Gundam. lol
28 seconds of showtime and it gets a retail HG kit while the Zaku that’s in the TITLE OF THE MOVIE is P-Bandai. Crazy.

At this point, it's not that the federation mobile suits are bad; it's a matter of the writers consistently failing them, especially in the origin where the Guncannon got done dirty.
If you're talking about the Iron Calvary Guncannon those ones suck as they aren't even built with working hands with fingers. They were built to be walking artillery battery meant for long to mid ranger combat. To be fair they were tough, but not tough enough to take Zaku I machine gun along with the anti-mobile suit hawk as the heat hawk wasn't invented yet.
It used to be that GMs were around a one to one match with a Zaku which was the entire point of having mass produced mobile suits and not just tanks. Now though, popularity power has made the Zaku almost unbeatable if its not against a Gundam or "hero" unit.
also back in the old OYW, zekes werent as nimble as this ( dom skate shoes plus vet pilot plus custom load, and light armor)
takes a GM custom or Spartan at minimum just to par with em

It's a shame that the Guntank wasn't in the Cucuruz Doan's Island movie with the Guncannon and the RX-78-2 Gundam together.

The cockpit of a heavily armored Guncannon blew up because of two indirect hits? I know Feddies are just cannon fodder to Origin writers, but come on...
gundam series has serious issue with inconsistency. sometimes they showed guncannon as very tanky mobile suit zeon even frustated to destroy, sometimes its showed get sniped by jagdgewherh although jagdgewehr are just shotgun that gets easily loose its velocity in longer range, and sometimes guncanon can be as fast a GM
Remember, Guncannons have a higher output than Guntanks--it's why they can use beam rifles--so even though they have dense armor, a hit to the back can cause the generator to explode. This is also one of the first generation models of Guncannon.

@user-se4ij9vy8s Guncannons get a little better, but I do not think they were part of Operation V. It has been a long time, but I think the Guncannons were already on White Base when it arrived to pick up the Gundam.
IMO Hayato and Kai definitely should have at least taken out one or two of these Zaku's. By this point in time of the story they already had a few battles under their belts and Kai's Puerto Rican Cannonfu in particular is not to be messed with.
They would if the writer didnt give the Zakus too thick of a plot armour.
I could’ve sworn the Guncannon was made of much sterner stuff in the anime. It went up against Ramba Ral in the Gouf and lasted surprisingly longer than one would expect; both with Kai and Amuro piloting it separately. The very same Guncannon is also capable of punching out a Zaku and dragging it across the desert by the face pipes.
i agree, basically a tanky mecha that can absorb as much damage as dishing it out.
this one just feels like the Guncannon in Thunderbolt OVA where they've paper thin armour.

Since it is made with the same armor the Gundam has, but as early as the Earth re-entry, it's shown that even the Gundam isn't invincible. And then there's the first time Sayla(?) piloted the gundam. Lose a foot immediately.
This is the Origin timeline where the Guncannon is as old as the Zaku4 prototype, and very badly designed from the start, its upgrade kits not really keeping up till they started fresh with the Gundam and GM.

@@maramba32 The guncannons in this scene are actually piloted by the White Base pilots. And this version of Cucuruz Doan's island took place after Jaburo, which was after they encountered the Doms.
I mean, it's fine if the guncannons didn't win the fight on their own. But they should've at least put up more resistance than what was portrayed in the movie. Especially with 2 veteran guncannons, an ace with a fine-tuned GM riding a core booster flown by an experienced pilot.
Regardless, still a great movie.
If the Dom's hovering ability is this amazing, then why didn't Zeon win the ground war when they released the Dom? The GM and Guncannons can't keep up with it. The hovering ability should realistically be a game changer.
In short, logistics. Zeon made too many different MS with specialized parts. Sure the DOM was a game changer but politics and logistics always got in the way. Even a DOM that survives and is successfully taking down enemy MS needs maintenance and you can't do that without parts. Federation had time and resources on hand so ZEON on Earth was basically getting spent. Also just taking the GM ground type into account, they were made with Luna titanium and actually had really good performance and battle records. Even being a match for the DOM in some respects.

Politics would arguably be the bigger issue compared to logistics since, if I'm remembering non-gihrens greed lore properly, wasn't Ramba Rals squadron supposed to have been completely equipped with Doms before the encounter with White Base but M'quve redirected them to the Black Tri Stars? That exact issue aside, requisitions being wasted on nepotism was a massive issue for Zeon not even counting Logistics, Over-extension of research resources, etc.
M'quve lost the ground war, not Zeon. They would have almost certainly won had Cecilia put someone more competent in command.
Yeah, had Ramba Ral gotten his doms, he likely would have taken down the Gundam and the white base, he did manhandle amuro with a gouf, a stock gouf not a better performing gouf custom.
@@RedFlameZero I'll certainly agree politics was the bigger issue with ZEON, zabis were being downright incompetent with their decisions. Though logistics would also still be a major issue, you can't fight a war without good logistics, which is a direct consequence of bad politics still but netherless, ZEON should of had the foresight that making too many specialised versions of your primary battle weapon was going to be a stupid idea. But I guess they assumed their MS would just overpower whatever the Feddies could pull out (they were somewhat correct but they didn't have nearly enough numbers to pull it off). And even by the time they did make a general purpose MS that basically outmatched what the Feddies did pull out (gelgoog Vs standard GM), most of their vet pilots were dead (akin to the Germans STG 44, great gun but too little too late for it to make any real impact on the battlefield). Though I do agree that M'quve was an issue for them, should of given Ramba his DOMs and not just focused on mining

Realistically, if Feddie mobile suits were this useless, Zeon would have won the war, both in space and on the ground. And just imagine Zeon mobile suits going up against the Federation before the GM was introduced. Shouldn’t they have won the war in the first few months going up against ships, tanks and fighters?
Problem was that the Principality Over extended their campaign too fast. They had the overwhelming advantage the first few months with Mobile suits, but the problem was they couldn't keep the supply lines steady because of the overwhelming demand their lines needed.
1) It's not that they're useless, it's that they're full of inexperienced pilots and untested weapons. This is directly addressed in multiple canons--the Zeon pilots were more skilled, in general, with mobile suits since they'd been using them for construction and other purposes for years before the war started. (For comparison: give a novice driver that barely has a driver's license something like a Mustang or an F1 racecar and see how well they do on a track lmao.) It isn't until the next generation of Federation suits come out--which, at that point, Zeon is investing more in super projects instead of mass-production units--that the Federation had any real chance of fighting back. And, by then, Amuro and Char have basically wiped out Zeon high command and most of the Ace pilots on the Zeon side are dead or in hiding.
2) Zeon was "winning" the war, technically, even from the very beginning. If it hadn't been for Amuro killing so many of their ace pilots, generals, and politicians on multiple fronts, there is a good chance the Federation would've both lost the Gundam and every major engagement they had in the proceeding year.
Edit: IN THIS MOVIE, yeah, the pilots aren't rookies. But they're still using RX-77 model Guncannons and those Zakus are ALSO being piloted by Aces with suits that have better specs.

Sometimes i do wonder how they didn't win then i also remembered that there are pilots like Yuu in the Federation that at one point literally had a kill count higher than Amuro which means the man killed more than 100+ MS so Bandai had to tell sunrise to change that because it feels strange to have the Main Character be overshadowed by a character from a side story. Like i get it that Zeon had so many ace and MS but when you think about it, Federation got crazy good pilots where one of them was literally shown to shoot down multiple Gaws using a GM Sniper II and was responsible for halting a Zeon Invastion. Then there's Amuro who literally took down all their experienced pilots because they were all sent to destroy the White Base. Then there's the politics and infighting with the Zeon. I don't think the Zeon would've won to begin with with how much problems they have. Sure they would've last a bit longer than 1 Year but they were bound to collapse to factions like we saw in fiture iterations. Like Zeon pilots are crazy good but Federations got hacks.
I was under the impression that the Guncannon was almost as durable as the Gundam. Since when were they able to be damaged so easily by weaponry carried by Zakus?

Anyone ever notice Hayato's Guncannon is conceptually similar to the Royal Griffin from Battletech? Shoulder missile pods, rifle-style particle beam weapon on its right arm, jump thrusters. The only difference is the Griffin doesn't have a machine gun mount in its head.
Well battletech uses designs from japanese anime like dougram and macross anyways
