A really interesting documentary. My dad knew Oliver Hardy. They met when Hardy moved from Georgia to Jacksonville, Florida. At the time, Jacksonville was a thriving film town and the railroad hub for the southern U.S. My dad worked for the railroad. He lived in the downtown area and had a favorite cafe he would eat dinner (supper: the evening meal) at 2 or 3 times a week. That's where he met Hardy, who was not famous then. My dad said they both had dinner about the same time and one day he was there when Hardy came in. The place was full, and he asked my dad if he could sit in the little booth with him as they had previously spoken several times and had a nodding acquaintance. Afterwards they would dine and chat several times before Hardy moved on to New York And L.A. Long story short, my dad did Oliver a small favor one evening which Hardy apparently never forget. After he moved, he would write on occasion I think there were about 20 letters total and a couple of photos, including one of him and Stanley from one of their movies. All of this was long before I came along as I was from my dad's 2nd marriage, and he was approaching 60 when I was born. Mom was 20 years younger. As far as I know they never met again. I've no idea what happened to the letters and photos, but these are nice memories from my dad.
I count myself fortunate. I belong to a generation that grew up when Laurel and Hardy's short features and films were still being shown regularly on the BBC here in the UK. I would have been about 5 years old the first time i watched them and laughed. The watching and the laughter have never stopped for me.
My great uncle was Charlie Hall who starred in a lot of their films. He emigrated from Birmingham UK to Hollywood back in the 1920s and made his fortune!
I was working in Birmingham a few months ago and took the opportunity to visit the Charlie Hall wetherspoons pub in Erdington where he was born. It has loads of pictures of Laurel and Hardy and your great uncle Charlie, it also tells a bit of his life story and how he became involved with them. Well worth a visit.
Your great uncle did great work with the guys, but you don’t need me to tell you that. He played an important part in entertaining countless people. 🇨🇦
When I was a child, in the early 70's we grew up watching Laurel and Hardy. I made sure to buy most of the video's and DVD's and when my son was growing up fed him on Laurel and Hardy too. I think their brand of comedy should be a staple for all young children. It's innocent fun and helps them not to take themselves too seriously. And when mishaps happen in life, as they often do, learn to brush them off, as Hardy often did! It also teaches them history and that the world had big idea's and a lot of funny ones long before they were around!!
I’ve always loved Stan and Ollie and enjoyed introducing them to my grandchildren. Just out of interest, I’m a retired vicar now but in my time, I served a church in Bishop Auckland, where Stan’s family lived for a time. I used to baptise children in the very font that Stan was baptised in - that always gave me a thrill ☺️
My comedic idles! Watching their movies now reminds me of happier times as a child listening to my parents laugh at their movies back in the sixties. Thanks for the incredible trip back in time!
Fantastic, thank you very much for creating this wonderful video of the world's greatest comedy duos filming locations. Hopefully one day when crossing the pond and revisiting the US I will get to visit these places that you have worked so hard to find for us. All the best from the UK.
Thanks for your research and all your work to post this! I am a fan of Laurel and Hardy as long as I can remember. It's great that almost a hundred years later, the world still hasn't stopped laughing at their brilliant work. More countries should show their work on tv like Italy.
Thank you thank you for your dedication and hard work i to at 64 am still a great fan of the boys they will never be forgotten especially with people like you around keep up the good work and thanks again
Never will you ever see a duo like these guy, pure comedy, Hal Roach ripped them off financially, and Stan stuck to his guns. Not working with the studio for 18 months. I still watch their films now. RIP both you will still have them laughing in heaven 🙏🏿
Sincerely to Bob Satterfield/Ross Owen/and Matt Holt: God bless you guys for this well done video. Just last week I said to my youngest son when we were in Hollywood on unrelated business that I desire to hunt down the L&H filming sites soon! Your video was a wonderful surprise. I noted immediately that you introduced the “2nd most” inquired-of filming site at the beginning. After a few minutes I FFWD’d only to discover that what HAS to be the #1, The Music Box steps, was not in here but its location is teased delightfully at the end of this video so I expect you guys will be filming a longer segment on that in the future. I was thrilled that you used what is my most cherished Hollywood tome, Laurel and Hardy, by McCabe, et. al. Like others commented, I introduced my sons to L$H and will God willing do so for my first grandson when he’s ready. Back in the late ‘70’s a best friend and I joined the Sons of the Desert as teenagers. These two gentlemen (especially Stan) have shaped my comedy stylings and I love kidding around so I get to emulate them both a lot. I cannot tell you how overjoyed I am that this showed up on my YT recommendations today! Great work.
Older folk still talk about Stan and Oille coming to Belfast in Ireland in the early 1950s - they had time for everyone - they took a walk around the city center and chatted with all the children and grown up's - they remain well-loved - unlike some - they were just as happy talking to ladies and gentlemen working as extras on their films as rushing off to spend time with other big names - pure class as performers and considered gentlemen and that's as good a title as one should hope for
Thank you fellow, you are a very dedicated man, that was really great to see, Laurel and Hardy the comedy is so clever and funny, nothing will ever compare with these very talented Gentlemen . Neil in sunny old England
I am so glad you're doing the history of Laurel and Hardy. Because I used to follow Stan Laurel's daughter with a gentleman who would discuss the history of Laurel and Hardy on You Tube. I had the pleasure of being able to chat with her off the show and Stan Laurel's daughter was a very nice lady. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Absolutely love your passion for the greatest double act of all time! I'm 65 now, and have been watching Laurel and Hardy for 61 years! Never get bored watching the geniuses at work!! Love all the videos you upload, and appreciate a the work you put in, though I guess for you, doing what you love isn't really work!!! Mick in UK 🇬🇧 ❤️
Amazing research, Sir. I grew up in the late 60s and I used to roll around laughing at Laurel and Hardy films. I was very young but still remember how my mum used to put me on the sofa with a cup of milk and a Buscuit and leave me watching them. Since then I have always had an interest in them. Your video is great, your research is impeccable. Thank you so much for sharing. Brilliant. From an English girl. ❤
Thank you for this mate. British bloke in a French forest here. Like diving and finding coral, I recently happened upon a rich seam of Laurel & Hardy DVD's in a local charity shop, and now... I have found my happy space! Best wishes to you... Subscribed. 🇬🇧🎬 🇺🇲
Great presentation! About Hal Roaches story of destroying the wrong house, he said that when Stan was alive, because Stan did not like the story at all, and said it wasn't true. He said " what did he think we were, stupid? "
I recently went to the Laurel and Hardy Museum in Stan's hometown of Ullverston, England. If your ever in England-a must stop! Their statue is around the corner in front of the library.
Это очень трогательно, мило, и одновременно грустно, что всё подругому и наши ребята Stan and Ollie...Эх. В такиие моменты ещё больше понимаешь, что ничто ни вечно. Thank you for video.
Excellent! I appreciate your research! Its remarkable how Laurel and Hardy transcend generations and it is also impressive that many of the film locations are still recognizable. Thanks for making this video!
Man walks by at 0:59 with bowler hat....L & H are great! So were many of their co stars. Even when L & H went into those more sophisticated films in the 40's, they left us with many great laughs.
Great location scouting! I've been to the Music Box Steps and the Perfect Day house on Vera Ave. Both are Meccas for L&H fans. Would love to see the location where they filmed Towed in a Hole. I'm sure it has changed. "Fresh Fish!"
Brilliant research. Well done. I live in the UK and during a couple of visits to California in the past few years have managed to visit The Music Box steps and Stan’s apartment block in Santa Monica. 😊😊
As a black man who grew up in England in the seventies,I will always and forever have a soft spot for STAN LAUREL and OLIVER HARDY they got me through my childhood, may they both R.I.P.
I'm a black woman who also grew up in England in the 70's ... My dad was hooked on Laurel and Hardy,.. Pure all-round entertainment. The most famous and genius, comedians on mother earth😊🙏🏽🩶🌎
Wow, I’ve just discovered your channel and I’m hooked. I used to watch Laurel and Hardy with my Grandad in the seventies. BBC2 at 6pm. It was either L&H or Harold Lloyd. It was great, in the autumn we would roast chestnuts on a shovel over the fire and Laurel and Hardy would keep us entertained. Fantastic memories, great video. So good of you to put the time in to show us these fascinating places.❤
What a very interesting video! I always liked Laurel and Hardy and watched them when I was much younger (I'm 72 now). I've always found it so interesting to visit places that have a rich history. What a thrill it must be to actually live in a place where historical activities, like filming L&H, took place. When I visit places like that I always think maybe I'll catch a glimpse of that earlier time...lol, of course I never do, but I am always hoping some time warp will happen. Thanks for providing this very interesting and entertaining video. With technology now we can visit the streets and look around just like we were there from our computers. Definitely going to do some virtual visiting soon! Thanks again and I look forward to your next video!
First heard of Stan and Ollie as an adult, when I read Ray Bradbury's Quicker Than The Eye collection of stories. I've watched almost all their surviving films and each time I watch one, I feel like a kid again! Seriously the funniest act I've ever seen.
Merci beaucoup d’avoir pris le temps de partager ce qui m’apparaît être une passion pour vous. Oui, un francophone du Québec qui se passionne pour les passions…😊

Saw them, live, in UK 1948. Great memory - couldn't believe there i was and that's LAUREL and HARDY!!!!
Wow . . . still!!!

I loved them and I wish I was born in their time. Los Angeles must have been so clean, uncongested and beautiful
I would love a time machine just to see how it was almost 100 years ago.

It would thrill me as well! What a blessing for you to experience. Stan was by all accounts a kindly fellow.

Beautiful video presentatíon for us Laurel and Hardy fans. Thank You.
Stan from Lancashire 😁
la photo au tout début du document de laurel et hardy au far West ont ne pourrais pas la voir elle est très très très rare merci infiniment.
As great as Stan Laurel was, he needed Oliver Hardy, as a partner, as much as he needed him, as a friend!.
Together, they are legends of comedy
Stan was the 'brains' of the team. He wrote and directed many films and scenes. Hardy was the 'follower' who played off of whatever Stan came up with. I agree they needed each other to achieve the greatness they found. At one time in his life Stan was the understudy for Charlie Chaplin.
That was great. Thank you. You look like Oli. Lo ed it.
