Thanks for being here for another piano video at the Merriam Pianos UA-cam channel. In this video, we’re going to be unboxing the Roland FA-08 synthesizer.
While the Roland FA-08 has been out for several years now, this is Stu’s first time getting behind one. Stu’s background prior to entering the piano business was as a full time touring.studio musician, so he’s got a ton of experience with synths and workstations. Let’s get the FA-08 unboxed and see what Stu has to say!
If this is the first time to the Merriam Pianos channel, please subscribe, we’d really appreciate the support.
    Background:
The FA-08 came out originally in 2015, but it’s still a highly relevant piece of gear. The most recent version is the full Fantom, which we’ll also likely get to on the channel soon. The FA-08 remains a really great midpoint, bridging the gap between the most advanced workstations and what you can get in a stage piano, both in terms of functionality and price.
    Weight:
While you wouldn’t call it light, it’s also not too heavy either (36 lbs.) and feels noticeably lighter than my RD2000. For a full 88 note keyboard (PHA4 Action), with multiple tone engines and tons of ports in the back, 36 lbs isn’t bad at all.
    Appearance/User Interface:
The FA-08 looks super cool, especially the colour in-lays. In terms of the interface, there’s a lot of stuff present here that Roland have been incorporating into their work stations for many years, such as the 16 pad assignable triggers and easily accessible rhythm pattern button and sequencer. Overall, most people should be able to find their way around this instrument pretty quickly. There doesn’t appear to be a panic button (i.e. button that returns you to a default setting in the heat of the moment) which is a bit of a drawback, but not a deal breaker.
Super Fun & Enjoyable to Play:
My first impressions after starting to play the FA-08 is that this appears to be an incredibly fun workstation to play with. The action (Ivory Feel G Keyboard) is more than functional, the sampler is laid out in an easy to understand way, the assignable knobs are easy to access for easy connection to software instruments. The control screen is bright and easy to navigate, as is the sequencer.
Multiple Sound Engines More Than Deliver:
As you can hear as I test out various patches, despite being a 5 year old product, the FA-08 still sounds really good and not at all dated.
    Conclusions:
Before we bore anyone to death or I get too lost in figuring this thing out, we’re going to leave this video as is, and dive much deeper into this instrument in an upcoming review video. Thanks for watching!

The FA08 is a product way ahead of its time. And I got to love it even more after this review. Thanks for this Stu. 🙏🏻

Would love some synth videos if you're thinking about taking the channel in that direction! Maybe on starter synths and workstations specifically for people with piano backgrounds.

Nice chops as always. But a little surprising you'd be covering this as it's a pretty old model. Tasty jazz licks however. :)

Ok keyboard newb here but I thought the FA-06 was a workstation but I think you said it is an arranger. Is it both perhaps?

Nice review, also your F08 review is great. I own both FA and F0 and to be honest, the FA Super Natural engine is far more superior to the one offered in the F0 series. The sounds are warmer, the editing capabilities are superior. Super Natural pianos in the FA are superior to those in the F0 series and I would dare to say on par with the Vpianos in the Fantom series.

Thanks! We appreciate you tuning in. :)
It is a matter of preference of course. I certainly understand where you're coming from though. Some players will prefer the SuperNATURAL tones over the V-Piano tones.

Could you please do a video on running sound for digital pianos. Your recordings sound so clear and solid. I have run the Kawai ES110 and the Roland FP-30 through different sound systems, but they both sound very dinging in the mid and high range unless you play really soft. Played with just the internal speakers they don't sound like this, and I don't hear it in your reviews. Please help. Thank You!!

Planning to get new keys I am torn between Rd88 and FA08. Which should I choose?

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  4 роки тому

Hmm - really depends on the use I'd say. Super different functionalities, but both sound great. The RD88 certainly is the easier of the two to use from every angle: weight, interface, range of features. The other big consideration is action - they don't feel the same, PHA-4 Action vs GF action... so that might be the deciding factor right there if you're a fairly experienced player. Also the onboard speakers may be another consideration. More or less, the RD88 is designed as a slightly more stage-pianoy solution to the FP series, without going full-blown RD2000 or workstation.

julio 15 it's a nice thing for the money. I nearly bought one but went with the Roland Juno Ds88 instead cause it has some awesome sounds onboard.

Moving more toward the electronic instruments in my mind is a good way to go. I see acoustic pianos as being relics of the past. I've always been a Roland fan. They are at the top of the game in electronic instruments of all types. My believe is that you will eventually need to read the entire manual very carefully. What I have against an instrument like the FA08 is that is looks to be eight inches longer. than the keybed itself. Personally I think Casio is going the right direction with smaller and lighter. Nevertheless a talented musician such as yourself will be able to create a lot of really interesting music with an instrument like this. Just think if J S Bach was alive today, what he might do with it. How good is the built in sequencer if it has one? I'd like to see you do some full synth orchestrations like Hans Zimmer.

Hi there, that's a great suggestion, doing a few videos on how to build a robust sequence with the onboard sequencer. For sure the FA-08 isn't built for a typical user, and so width considerations don't come into play nearly the same way that a home digital or a gigging portable would. And yes....I know I'll have to break down and get into the manual...it's a bad habit of mine to resist! :) -stu

    • @tonylancer7367

Apparently the FA has a dated sound set, some of the sounds come from the Roland Integra 7. The MODX has "newer" sounds thanks to its DNA from the Montage. But the Roland still has an upper hand in VA (virtual analog) sounds.
Can't stand the small screen on the FA though.

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! While I have had a chance to spend quite a bit of time with the FA-08, I have never personally altered the scree saver/background on the screen. Perhaps, one of our helpful community members/FA-08 owners can chime in and provide some guidance. :)
