What Risen got right, was make you feel the character progression. At first you run from a pack of black wolves and some hours later you manage to defeat them with just a few HP left.
2 years late but that s pretty much all PB games
@@bladebk5537 True...but I'd still say that in Gothic 3, Risen 2 and 3 you can whack most enemies from the beginning.
Risen 1 was, still, one of the best game i ever play and prime example of small not mean less in RPG.

Risen 1 is in my opinion best game after Gothic 1 & 2 (+NoTR) that Piranha Bytes ever made. Personally, it has the best melee combat system out of all of their games. I had an absolute blast while playing it, and can definitely see myself occasionally replaying it. I wish it had an expansion pack with more lands to explore tho! :)
Risen 3 definetely matches Risen 1 at its best
Mages usually get OP in RPGs. Melee is a bit harder in Risen, but yes, you do get rather powerful at the end.

Props for the well thought-out review, people tend to dismiss Risen 1 as garbage right off the bat because of that atrocious X360 port without giving the PC version a shot. I know you focused mainly on Mage, but what is your opinion of melee?I've read that it tried to improve the Gothic formula, but somehow ended up worse due to being less responsive?
I enjoyed this game a lot back in the day. I was very Gothic-starved when I played it, though. :D

Have to say, I'm not very partial to the Risen series. Risen 2 and 3 were big disappointments to me. The original Risen though? I sitll play it from time to time and have a blast.

Yes!..probably wont review it right after release...maybe a couple of months ....but I do want to review it and not take forever to get to it ... Im also doing a video about my hopes and fears for Outer worlds. ...should be out in June or July. ..just waiting for them to show off the footage they have saved for e3

Good review man, but you are gonna be diasappointed with Elex if this did not impress you. When I look back at Risen 1, its the last good game from PB. Now that they are bought by THQ I hope Elex 2 will be a proper game, otherwise thers nothing to look forward to with that company for years. Sad to say that as a big fan since 2004, but its reality.
risen 3 was good, you need a IQ above 100 to understand
Much better than the 3rd one in my opinion. Pretty much on par with G1, just with better combat. Too bad they've fucked up combat so much in the 3rd installment...

Hell yeah. Is it weird that you begin to sound more and more like old Che as the video goes on? I think balancing in RPGs is always difficult, though. At some point player will simply break the economy or power curve unless he just sticks to critical path and ignores everything else. Risen may have been some people's first contact with an RPG that doesn't hold your hand and I remember some being put off they don't begin as some Chosen One top dog or such. At the end of the day Risen was really another Piranha Bytes attempt at Gothic-style format and clearly lack of budget caught up with them in the last third or so.

I dont know what goes on at PB but after Gothic 2 it just seems like a rollercoaster of ups and downs ...which is odd cause usually that happens in the beginning of a developers life span ...but Gothic is a worthy game ...even with its issues ...and im excited to review ELEX after im done reviewing Aeon of sands

Good old Piranha Bytes, 2/3 of the game a joyous ride ... last part of the game, absolute snoozefest.
Your videos would improve exponentially if you wrote scripts, revised them, then did more than one take for your voice over. And use a thesaurus please. It will help because you repeat yourself an awful lot. I enjoy your videos, but you can do much better. Thanks for the content.
