I once attempted suicide and was in a coma, what I didn't think about was my two boys I was leaving behind with their Bastard father. What I'm trying to say is stop and really think about what you are doing and who you are affecting by your actions. Thank God I survived and got to see my boys grow up!
It's their most famous song, but I don't believe it's their best. For me it's always going to be Radio Free Europe, Driver 8, Oddfellows Local 151, Exhuming McCarthy, or pretty much anything off of the Monster album. Not to say that they have much that's bad. Huge REM fan...
As somebody who has been there, I can tell you that when you are in that place that is so dark, so crushing, the only way you see to get out, is simply to not exist anymore... you *won't* call a crisis line, you *can't*, because you don't see yourself as something worth saving. If you don't get lucky, like I did, and have somebody from outside of your situation intervene directly, you probably won't survive. I nearly didn't. Check in on your friends. Especially the ones you have always seen as strong. I was always the rock, the one who was there for everybody else when they needed somebody. I think knowing that I could break really scared a lot of my friends. I lost quite a few in the years since. The road to recovery is a long, arduous one. It's never one that has to be travelled alone, share your load with those who offer to help, and be willing to help shoulder the load of another. Together, the load becomes lighter. And look for the ones who have isolated themselves from any group, they're usually the ones who see themselves as outcasts, or not belonging. A compliment, or a brief conversation about the weather, could be the bright spot in their week. Never underestimate the power of your words, or of a single, random, act of kindness.

The only thing that helps is medication, my fur babies, and music especially this song. I have played it so many times. The past year has been the worst so far. I lost my lab mix to cancer, then found my husband dead. He was sick but I always thought he would die in a hospital so that was traumatic. I had to sell my house of 26 years and move to a mobile home that I only could afford as is which means it needs alot of work. I'm also in a part of town away from all my friends and I don't have family. Two months ago I lost my chihuahua who was closest to me out of all the animals I have had to cancer. I've finally agreed to try therapy again but I'm on a waiting list. I'm a strong person and people keep telling me that but a person can only take so much so I am thankful for music because it's always there when no one else is.

There have been times when I was younger, closeted, and unmedicated that what kept me going was just knowing that I was not alone, that other people had felt like I did and I was not beyond being understood. This song definitely reaches out to give people that connection.
I think that's the real power of this song. It's so sort of direct in a way that can, in so many cases, come off as ignorant or condescending because telling someone in a dark place to just stop feeling that way is so deeply unhelpful, but then it completely flips the script by putting that imperative ("so hold on") into the context of absolute validation and understanding of that dark place.

I always forget how hard this song hits until it starts and he says "when you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on. Don't let yourself go.." and I just break down. It's a place I live in most of the time, so hearing people sing about it is extra emotional for me.
R.E.M was THE College Station staple of the 80's, and then had a huge crossover hit in '91 with Losing My Religion and had many mainstream hit singles. You can't go wrong - so much to check out! It's the End of the World (As We Know It), The One I Love, Losing My Religion, Orange Crush, Fall on Me, and the aforementioned Losing My Religion. (to start) Thanks for the react!
I first heard them on our college radio station. One of the girls in my dorm was a DJ there and was really into REM so I got to hear them in the early 80’s when they were just getting started.
This was filmed on the I-10 in San Antonio. I couldn't drive that stretch ever again without thinking of this song every time. A huge song that really meant everything to people who were struggling. Still as powerful now. Legendary band. So many good songs.
The song and video are so powerful that I immediately got teary-eyed with the first notes. When the older guy in the car thinks, "She's gone," about his late wife, that really gets me. My mom just passed away, and I can't help but believe my dad is thinking that right now.
This so much hits home I have been fighting depression for 9 months since my wife passed away and it is true you have to fight it every single day hoping the next may be better
I just recently found you guys, maybe a month or 2 ago and I gotta say I love you guys and your channel and just thank you for being you. I don't have any friends and recently became disabled, and I only have a couple family members that talk to me, but still I'm alone everyday besides my dog. Watching your videos make me feel less alone and a little less depressed so I thank you guys
You are beautiful and you are loved. It's hard to be lonely. I've been there. I don't want to give you a bunch of feel good talk that really doesn't mean anything. You do have people who care about you. Sometimes it's something that we go through. While it may seem impossible today, we still don't know what tomorrow brings. Chances are that you have a friend out there that you just haven't met yet.
@@vitus33 I WOULD suggest it because it's one of a mountain of great REM songs.....so why not? Need to start with a few WOWS to entice a person to go down the REM rabbit hole.
R.E.M. is a universe. The most poetic, successful and artistically honest band (all at the same time!! Incredible!!) in the last 20 years. They're like reading a good poetry book. Different.
This song is so wonderful. It reminds of my son who took his life at 14 years old …8 years ago .It takes a long time to heal but sometimes songs touch your soul .
I actually met the lead singer, Michael Stipe, a few years before they released this song. They were just starting to get known. In the midst of pre-concert chaos I found him to be one of the most intense, focused, and engaging personalities I have ever come across. It was strange. Mayhem was going on around us, but there was this bubble around him of....calm.....We spoke for a bit, he asked some pointed questions then went to get ready. Really a great personality.
Having seen him in many interviews, I really relate to the picture you’ve painted of this meeting. Not that I doubted he would be genuine, down-to-earth and curious, but it’s still really nice to hear it affirmed. Thanks for sharing! REM are my favourite band and I’m so happy I got to see them (London, 2008, their last ever UK show). I would absolutely love to meet Michael.
Another great song that has been credited with helping many people change their minds about hurting themselves or suicide is "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. It's an incredible duet from two musical geniuses (in fact Elton John said this song saved him from drug overdosing). ua-cam.com/video/VjEq-r2agqc/v-deo.html
Yup , my two, go to songs when I feel depressed,( 4 redundancies before 26, and several other job losses in last 30 years ,then got EXCLUDED . Peter Gabriel , lucky Barsteward spending 7 minutes holding Kate Bush , who wouldn’t . Another great anti suicide song is , The Great gig in the sky, by Pink Floyd ……I’m hanging on daily
This song is one that would not be out of place in church...or anywhere. All about the Love and Hope, my friends. Thanks for another great take on an old favorite; so fun hearing it for the first time again, through you.
Jay and Amber, with you both being teachers, you are in an excellent position to help so many kids who may be going through something they dont know who to talk to about it. I would suggest you play this song for them and let them know that they're not alone. Sometimes, a teacher can be the best person to talk to about a personal problem, or the teacher can "sense" there is a problem
R.E.M. has as deep a rabbit hole as any band in history. Their first six albums are among the greatest of all time (and the ones that came after sure ain't chopped liver, either).
You should do Soul Asylum's "Runaway Train". That is about lost children [a different video for a few countries, as they show pictures of them]. Some where found [alive and dead]. Great song too!
Much love from Toronto, guys, thanks for being two warm, genuine, open-hearted people and taking us with you on this amazing journey of discovery. ✌😘🎶💞💃
Great reaction. Love this song. As someone who suffers with depression this song means an awful lot to me. Always reminds me to hold on, things can hopefully get better. It’s comforting to know other people feel like you do.👍❤️✌️🌼
This is INSTANT wet eyes 👀 fantastic track with a very deep meaning to the lyrics … it’s sweet , comforting and unbearable all in equal measure and that’s talent right there . Respect to REM 👍🏴
This song absolutely applies to everyone. I've heard it 100 times and I still cry when I hear it. Please listen to Over The Rainbow by Izzy Israel Kamakawiwole
This was definitely the main band of my youth. I took the whole ride with REM. It really was a blessing having MTV with them for that ride so that you get visuals with their beautiful lyrics. That was when MTV actually played music!!!
Was never a huge REM fan but I have LOVED this song from the first time I heard it back in the 90s. Our acts of kindness towards one another can go a long way. Brighten someone's day today. Say hi to a stranger. Hold the door for someone. Go out of your way to befriend the "weird" people ( aka, people different than you), which we all are. You know, the Golden Rule isn't dead. Never was. Never will be.
I think I remember Jay saying that he likes the piano, so I would recommend REMs Night Swimming. It's another slow song, but the piano and lyrical imagery more than make up for the tempo.
and both of these songs' string arrangements( and a couple of others from this album) were composed by John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin - a little factoid not known by very many people!!
My bestie died on the 12th April 1997 from cancer aged just 34. She had already chosen this to be played at her funeral months before she died as she knew she was terminal. I sat with my darling friend the night before, she was in a coma in her room at home, and I told her how much I loved her and what she meant to me, fully believing that she would still wake up. Her little 2yr old daughter Grace came into the room and called Mumma, and there was no reaction, and then I knew and started to sob. We came home that night, and we’re coming back the next day and my husband had a phone call and walked over to me and said Cass (her older daughter) had just rung, and I said please don’t say it, I don’t want to hear it!! She had just died and they wanted us there so we got into the car and I was sobbing, and this bloody song was on! I knew it was her, trying to help me, and comfort me but I just cried harder. I sat with her for ages, stroking her hair, talking to her and thanking her for her love and loyalty. This song has come on at various times in my life since, usually when I need her, and I know it’s her. I miss that beautiful girl every day of my life. I love you so much Meredith ❤️
R.E.M. is awesome. This album in particular was the album that helped me in coping with my father's death as a teenager. Love your channel. Thanks for being here 🤘❤🙏
One way to take the end of the video: Everybody has chosen to leave their problems (represented by the traffic jam) behind, and have gone on into some unknown future. Another way: If hundreds of people vanished in such a public way we'd pay attention, we'd care, we'd wonder what happened... but we don't pay as much attention to the lives lost by suicide.
One of the great bands from Athens Georgia! Used to watch them live at the 40 watt club in the 80's. Saw them and another Athens band, the B52s live on the square in downtown Athens.
R.E.M. is one of my top 10 bands! Michael Stipe (lead singer) has one of the most beautiful voices in rock. Here are my suggestions: "Man on the Moon" "Orange Crush" "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" "Stand" "The One I Love"
This is the song we need right now. And excellent PSA - Thanks !!! Sweet ones: Don't isolate. Reach out, especially if you don't even feel worthy. Someone out there really wants to help and wishes you well. 💗
R.E.M reminds me of when I graduated from Army Basic Training. A bunch of guys were gonna go see them and I had never heard them. I didn't start to appreciate their music until now that I'm older. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this. I am almost 54 years old and still cry my eyes out at this song. It hits so hard. I used to be in a very dark place and probably thought of suicide more in one day than most people do in their lifetime. I felt as if I failed at everything. That feeling, oddly enough, is the only reason I never tried. Because I thought I’d fail at that, too. I managed somehow to change my thoughts and with that came a change in my life. I’m somewhat successful, I live in a beautiful home with a beautiful wife, I have 4 incredible grandchildren and life is good. I’m so blessed to be here today and every day. My wife and I do a thing every single day at dinner where we say one thing that we are grateful for. That alone keeps us grounded and humble. So please, if anyone is reading this and struggling inside, message me. Talk to me. Talk to someone. You are special. You are loved. Please hang on. It’s worth it, trust me. ❤️❤️❤️
This song is on my playlist for when I'm dealing with bad depression. It's so beautiful and the things you said about it are so true. Y'all have reacted to so many songs, it's hard to tell, but if you like this one, have you ever listened to Depeche Mode? I'd suggest Enjoy the Silence.
R.E.M. Can't get there from here. It's outside every else's box, step outside the norm and do something from a great band that's a great song that never gets played. Every reactor does losing my Religion. "Can't get there from here" is up beat and fun as hell, and a great song...
I can't hear this song without Crying. It really hits at your heart and soul. If you want to hear another set of Tearjerkers, listen to Country Music like I Miss My Friend, and He didn't have to be. If you do listen to these songs, please have tissues.
Hi guys, so glad you found this one. Such a powerful song. REM were a superb band from Georgia. Saw them live in Nottingham, UK in 2003. Much love from England 🏴
Beautiful song and choked me up as a good friend took her life 3 years ago next week and been thinking a lot of her with the date coming up . She was the life of the party and nobody saw it coming , most people who take there own lives hide the darkness very well and as the video shows you are on your own with those depressive thoughts . Great message from you guys as well 🙏
This great record brings back sad memories of the time Princess Diana died, it was played on tv , when all the flowers were outside Kensington Palace, very sad song, brings back memories of this wonderful beautiful woman ,,
1st time listening to your reaction...have been a lifetime fan of R.e.M... had the great pleasure to see them live in concert a long time ago. I can't express in words that feeling when you have awave of 80,000 + voices coming together on Everybody Hurts.
Sometimes you just have to appreciate the slower songs for the emotions they invoke, not to mention the purity of the vocals. There are so many good ballads out there that I think you’ll like even though they’re slower songs.
It’s like finding a hidden gem to catch it on the radio etc. Everybody Hurts and Losing My Religion are quite commonplace and not nearly the treasure as that early REM.
Thank you for this one. Absolutely beautiful song! As others have mentioned, it has saved countless lives. I tend to prefer their earlier work, this song is a notable exception. By the time they recorded this Album, "Automatic for the People", you could understand the words Michael Stipe was singing. In the early years, you couldn't understand half the lyrics... but they were no less powerful. You should watch Eddie Vedder's speach from REM's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Here's a direct quote: "And I can say, there are things that I hold and feel [hand on heart] very deeply about inside here that Michael Stipe put in there himself. What’s really incredible about this is, is that while this is happening… this all happens without ever being able to understand a f^%#@g word he is saying." The sound track of my 20's, 80's alternative on mainstream radio, one of the greatest bands of the late 80's to the end of the century, #97 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the greatest musical acts of all time... thank you again for this one. My favorites... "Talk About the Passion", "Oddfellows Local 151", "Green Grow the Rushes", "Radio Free Europe"... and every other song from their first six albums. I almost forgot, "It's the End of the World as We Know it". It's actually our family song. (Corny alert) We, my wife and I and our 3 boys, all shout 'Leonard Bernstein'. I'm guessing if you're still reading this far into my comment, you understand . I'd love to see you guys react to my current musical obsession, Porcupine Tree. You should start with "Arriving Somewhere but not Here", live from Chicago.
Thank you for doing this, it has a very special meaning to me, i lost a brother to suicide. But i love at the end as well, it shows you are not alone, and to hold on, their is help. Suicide just transfer pain to your loved one left behind.... Again guys, thanks for doing this.. i love your channel and reactions
The live version of this brings tears to my eyes every time. The singer,Michael Stipe, stands at the edge of the stage near the end as if he is imploring someone/everyone to hold on.
What's the frequency Kenneth has such a weird background - In 1986 journalist Dan Rather was attacked by two people while walking home in NYC - they kept screaming "Kenneth, what is the frequency?!"

Hope you are ok today mm
@@markb_123 thanks. Been an okay day actually 👍🏻
I’m rooting for you!!!
Please know that you have gifts to give, someone needs you, though you may never realize who you've helped.
Imitation of life is another great one!
@@AleAT Driver 8, Gardening at Night, Daysleeper, Be Mine.....it's endless
I have always been partial to Half a World Away. Hit the trifecta with great lyrics, a hauntingly-beautiful melody, and a mellifluous voice. Love!
I first heard them on our college radio station. One of the girls in my dorm was a DJ there and was really into REM so I got to hear them in the early 80’s when they were just getting started.
First heard them on Beverley Hills 90210 many moons ago
This was filmed on the I-10 in San Antonio. I couldn't drive that stretch ever again without thinking of this song every time. A huge song that really meant everything to people who were struggling. Still as powerful now. Legendary band. So many good songs.
Great song.
Anybody out there hurting....
I love you. ❤️
*Amen. God Bless you*
I love you too❤
@dawnhall2400
You just put a smile on an old Navy Vets face. Lol ❤
Take Care 🍺😎👍
@alibabaoofandangle
Thank you, and God Bless you too.
In this day and age, we can all use a little. ❤
For faster, fun R.E.M. song: “It’s the End of the World as We Know It”
Love that song. Adore that song. Words are important so they should look at lyrics while reacting.
@@foxandscout Are you kidding?!?! They'll have to pause and rewind every 3 seconds lol LEONARD BERNSTEIN
@@steviekc9057 great comment love it
because you need to hear happy REM too.
And if you want to hear it even faster check out the Great Big Sea cover of it
The song and video are so powerful that I immediately got teary-eyed with the first notes.
Wishing you peace and strength.
So very sorry for your loss. Please, don’t give up. Breathe. Much love.
Hold on, it does pass but so very very slowly. One day you’ll remember her and smile instead of cry, promise!
Amen...know what you mean
Stay strong my friend sending you my deepest sympathy
Thats the only reason i watch reaction videos so it feels like I'm watching with someone. Totally relate
I think this song tugs at everyone's heartstrings. Another R.E.M song - "Losing My Religion"
With all the great REM songs, why wold someone suggest Losing My Religion?
@@vitus33 I WOULD suggest it because it's one of a mountain of great REM songs.....so why not? Need to start with a few WOWS to entice a person to go down the REM rabbit hole.
Don't Go Back To Rockvile, Orange Crush, Driver Eight, World Leader Pretend... there are just so many.
@@vitus33
Michaels very personal lyrics maybe?
R.E.M. is a universe. The most poetic, successful and artistically honest band (all at the same time!! Incredible!!) in the last 20 years. They're like reading a good poetry book. Different.
R.E.M. did some great music in the 80s too. We’re talking 40 years!
Nicely put!
This is a wonderful song, other good songs from them "Losing My Religion" "It's The End of The World as We Know It" "Man on the Moon"
While those are amongst my favorites, don't Forget "Discoverer". That's one of their hidden gems.
I really enjoy watching y'all. You seem like very kind-hearted people that share the same mindset as I do. I appreciate what you all do.
I love this song. Im holding back tears right now. This song touches my heart in a way that is unique. ❤
This made me cry, thanks a million folks. Your intelligence and decency are beautiful.
This song was written by the band because of the concerns of the high amount of teenage suicides
This song is so wonderful. It reminds of my son who took his life at 14 years old …8 years ago .It takes a long time to heal but sometimes songs touch your soul .
"Be kind... for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle..."
They’re the type of band where you can buy the whole album and every track is amazing. They’re a great band.
REM, one of my top ten bands, consistently great, well written and beautifully performed songs!!😁😁🇬🇧
Such a cool band. Loosing My Religion amongst many more. Defined the 90s IMO
90's was the last of great music...from the rock and Karen Carpenter of the 70's.
Losing my religion.... Not Loosing my religion
@@abbyboyd5111 thanks, typo.
@@markbarnwell942 you are most welcome. I assumed as much. 😉
Yes, definitely. and its video is great too.
Well then there needs to be more songs like this with all the suicides...terrible world we live in...all the violence, the border, Biden...just crazy.
As others have said…Losing My Religion is their most famous song. It doesn’t mean what you think it means. It’s a southern phrase.
R.E.M. has as deep a rabbit hole as any band in history. Their first six albums are among the greatest of all time (and the ones that came after sure ain't chopped liver, either).
Agreed 100%!
You should do Soul Asylum's "Runaway Train". That is about lost children [a different video for a few countries, as they show pictures of them]. Some where found [alive and dead].
Great song too!
Definitely. All these great 80’s and early 90’s songs brings me back to innocent times. Teenager in the late 80’s and young adult in the early 90’s.
Great song 💜🕊️
absolutely! excellent song and video!
Love that song. It’s one of the first ones I learned on the guitar. Can’t watch the video though. Too heartbreaking.

Respect to REM

Okay so you're mad that they're not sobbing yet?? ;p Why else call for Iz...
@@reanimated what.???
I agree that song is amazing done by him.
Oh yes! That one is beautiful 😊💖
and both of these songs' string arrangements( and a couple of others from this album) were composed by John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin - a little factoid not known by very many people!!
I'm so addicted to your channel. Bringing me smiles Every Single Day :)
This is an absolutely BRUTAL song.
Anytime I witness real humanity I am moved. We have so much potential.
Here are my suggestions:
"Man on the Moon"
"Orange Crush"
"It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)"
"Stand"
"The One I Love"
It is great to see someone review the song and actually GET IT. Excellent review
Not a very big R.E.M. fan but the power of this song is undeniable. And I heard they filmed it in a really cool place!
You guys made a great video choice and thank you for the beautiful message out to everyone 🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍🥲🦋🦋🦋😇😇😇😇 thank
you for making me smile 😊😍
They really did name their band from "Rapid Eye Movement." I remember Casey Kasem telling us about it. :)
Top 40 count down every Saturday night
R.E.M. happens while dreaming.
Peter Buck said it was just a nice short band name that can mean anything to anyone.
Thus song still gives me goose bumps everytime I hear it. So sad & beautiful at the same time. I'm sure it's saved many lives.
Great reaction and you guys got it 👍 most beautiful song ever written . ❤
Iconic song. Iconic video. 5 out of 5. Memorable from MTV.
This is the song we need right now. And excellent PSA - Thanks !!! Sweet ones: Don't isolate. Reach out, especially if you don't even feel worthy. Someone out there really wants to help and wishes you well. 💗
This and 'Don't give up' have saved thousands of lives.
This song saved so many lives. Amazing masterpiece
This is as much a message as a song to people suffering from depression, letting them know there are answers out there
Hold on and be kind people ❤️
My favorite R.E.M. is "E-Bow the Letter," with Patti Smith. You guys should also check out Patti Smith's version of "Gloria."
Nightswimming. Please.
Or just do Shiny Happy People.
One of the great bands and artists to come out of Georgia.
So many songs in the last 30 - 40 years that touch people’s hearts and change people’s lives. Music can mean so much to the individual or groups
These guys are tight. Finally got to see them live and they were amazing. One of the best shows ever.
Emotional song. Lyrics /video cut deep. Very relatable because, sooner or later, "Everybody Hurts."

It's outside every else's box, step outside the norm and do something from a great band that's a great song that never gets played. Every reactor does losing my Religion.
"Can't get there from here" is up beat and fun as hell, and a great song...
That's a bit obvious.

Such a classic and beautiful song that we all can relate to, hands down!
Beautiful song and choked me up as a good friend took her life 3 years ago next week and been thinking a lot of her with the date coming up . She was the life of the party and nobody saw it coming , most people who take there own lives hide the darkness very well and as the video shows you are on your own with those depressive thoughts . Great message from you guys as well 🙏
This was filmed on the I-10/I-35 double decker in downtown San Antonio (My hometown)
This great record brings back sad memories of the time Princess Diana died, it was played on tv , when all the flowers were outside Kensington Palace, very sad song, brings back memories of this wonderful beautiful woman ,,
Love this song. It is another one that everyone can relate to.
Sometimes...
Blew my mind when I first saw this video.
R.E.M.'s first single Radio Free Europe still holds up in every way.
It’s like finding a hidden gem to catch it on the radio etc. Everybody Hurts and Losing My Religion are quite commonplace and not nearly the treasure as that early REM.
Yes! Early R.E.M. is terrific. They defined my college years in the 80s.
Wolves lower = great tune
I like the message that you took from it…”we don’t know what day everyone’s having so we can make a difference by helping them smile!” Thanks 🙏
Here's a direct quote:
"And I can say, there are things that I hold and feel [hand on heart] very deeply about inside here that Michael Stipe put in there himself. What’s really incredible about this is, is that while this is happening… this all happens without ever being able to understand a f^%#@g word he is saying."
The sound track of my 20's, 80's alternative on mainstream radio, one of the greatest bands of the late 80's to the end of the century, #97 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the greatest musical acts of all time... thank you again for this one.
R.E.M. has offered many pieces that have touch so many. This particular video was phenomenal...even the ending.
So very sorry for your loss❤
Sending prayers to you 🙏
😥 so sorry you had to go through that
The live version of this brings tears to my eyes every time. The singer,Michael Stipe, stands at the edge of the stage near the end as if he is imploring someone/everyone to hold on.
A couple of great up-tempo REM songs: WHAT'S THE FREQUENCY KENNETH and IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT.
What's the frequency Kenneth has such a weird background - In 1986 journalist Dan Rather was attacked by two people while walking home in NYC - they kept screaming "Kenneth, what is the frequency?!"
Don't forget Shiny Happy Ppl featuring Kate Pearson of B52s
Older REM had a lot of stuff that's borderline punk rock.
I have seen REM live numerous times, the best band ever for me!
