- This chessboard is made of cocobolo and curly maple, along with eat Indian rosewood for the frame. The top and bottom of the board are 3/16" veneers glued to an MDF core. The frame is attached with glue and splines. The bottom is covered with a high quality felt. Each square is 2.125" x 2.125". The finish is a semi-gloss lacquer.

It seems the HD version is still processing for some reason. Hopefully it finishes soon. Sorry!
Top,, good job friend 👏👏
The UA-cam algorithm is weird, I started watching the better call Saul scene where Saul wants a Cocobolo desk, later some chess games and I ended up here hahaha.
The first thing I thought when I saw this was that episode of BCS
Don't know about you, but the differences between pieces gave them some individuality, for me. I liked it.
It's kind like you carve 7 dwarfs in wood and realize all 7 are different, unique, and it's nice.
Beautiful work John. Love the technique with the MDF core to eliminate movement...clever. Great video as well...as usual.
Gorgeous piece!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Personally I would have put some felt feet on it so I could look at that ambrosia maple! Too beautiful a piece of wood to hide!
Hello sir ☺☺👍
agreed! Seeing that maple getting covered hurt
Great job. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing the project. Beautiful work.
Thanks David!
Great job!
When I glued the border on mine in shop class I glued it raised as yours. Shop teacher was so mad at me he said supposed to be flush. I think the raised is better. Very nicely done. I’m sure your client will love it
Neat and clean job, I love it!
Was wondering where this one had been! Fantastic as always!
Great Build, really like your videos, the projects, how you edit and how you present/do voice overs! Big fan, have learned a lot!
Thanks a lot James!
You got a subscription out of me for this video. Very clean. Nicely done. I want to make one at some point.
beautiful chessboard!!!
Beautiful, dude. Fantastic work! 😃
Really amazing looking board!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Super job. I love the cheat tongue and groove method. Will have to try that myself.
👍
Beautiful!!
nice work and presentation
Great video. Love the hardwoods you have access to. Here in Scotland our exotic hardwoods consist of 9mm ply, 18mm MDF, and if we can get our hands on it OSB
🤣
I'm so early the glue hasn't finished drying
Very nice work, I am looking forward to making one of my own.
I would love to see a chess set pieces of yours. They look incredible.
Great looking chessboard
Beatiful chess board! 👍💪
It's not a bug, it's a feature. I kinda like the idea of a chess set where all the pieces are unique.
That was what I thought!
good job
GOOD JOB....💛❤
Great! But for some reason I can only watch it at 360p and this deserves high def
Beautiful. This is one of the first real projects I am taking on. I've wanted my own Cocobolo and Curly Maple chessboard for years. I have the equipment now and I have the wood. Gonna give it a shot.
What thickness did you cut the squares to please?
Also, I dont have a jointer. I have a planer and necessary saws. Is the jointer critical to getting it right?
Thanks so much. Looking forward to watching the rest of your videos!
Thanks! I think the squares were around 1/4" thick or so. I didn't want to go much thicker because the substrate they're glued to doesn't expand and contract like the squares will.
A jointer definitely makes life easier and is always a part of my workflow. That said, if I didn't have one for this specific project I would most likely set up some sort of jointing jig on the table saw (or router table if you prefer). That would allow you to rip a clean, straight edge. Just make sure you have a solid ripping blade because these will be surfaces that see glue.
Let me know if you have any other questions! Good luck!
First off WOW! This chess board is stunning! Out of curiosity, you mentioned that this was a client project, why the long break in the middle?
Thanks! I tried to squeeze it in my schedule ahead of the two large cabinet I had to make. But I ran out of time and had to focus on the cabinets first.
Beautiful, I just quite did not understand the felt at the bottom... Did the client request that last minute? Because why would you put that nice ambrosia at the bottom if you would cover it later?
Thanks! The felt was planned. I had some leftover ambrosia maple from a previous project. These were off cuts at the exact right size. If we didn’t use felt, I probably would’ve used more curly maple on the bottom.
Very nice 👍👍👍
Thanks Keith!
That turned out really nice John! 👌 What saw blade you using on your Sawstop? Thank you for sharing!
Right now I’m using a thin kerf rip and thin kerf crosscut by Freud. But they’re old and dull; I’ve had new ones in my Amazon cart for a while. Might finally buy them now haha.
@@parillaworks Thanks John… I know about dull blades! 😀
👍👍
That utility belt 😍
😘
I wouldn't have used mdf more like a piece of 1 inch plywood just for the stability
What were you using as a turn table when spraying?
That was a little under sink organizer that spins haha.
Out of curiosity, what about the wood movement? Is that going to be a issue?
Hey Eric, missed your comment. The top and bottom “veneers” should be thin enough that they stay stable on the MDF. Assuming that, the frame should be safe.
Belo trabalho, pena que não habilitou a tradução. ( Nice work, too bad it didn't enable the translation )
Only 360p showing on my end.
Great project, thanks for sharing!
Thanks! Sorry about that. Hopefully the HD version shows up soon!
@@parillaworks It did finally. Now video needs rewatching, so luck's on you :-)
to me only shows in 360p, and it was uploaded 1 hour ago
First let me say... Wow! Really amazing piece of art. May I ask a question? I maybe mistaken, but I think I noticed you using a paint coated saw blade, and was wondering if you feel any concern about the safety mechanism on your saw, loosing sensitivity and not effectively shutting down, should you accidentally touch the blade by mistake? Of course I'm assuming you have a Sawstop table saw. IDK.
Thanks Neil! I haven’t heard that painted blades inhibit the Sawstop mechanism at all. I’ve actually set it off before (by hitting my metal miter gauge). And when the saw is off, you can touch the blade and test to see if the mechanism is working. A light will blink on the power switch.

Very good. Ok. Thanks. I just bought my 3hp 36" Sawstop. The Instructions specify in bold letters, do not use paint coated blades. However, your right. If by slight touch, you can see the safty activate, then it must be ok. Thanks for the reply.
You champ.
how much is it
Jimmy McGill likes cocobolo. ("Better call Saul")
What size squares did you choose?
2.125” or 54mm.
I keep reading the video title as "Making a Chocobo and Curly Milk Cheeseboard" 😂
🔥🔥🔥
look at that sexy new toyota! lol
Credit card boogers! Ha! How'd I miss this vid? Really noice, John.
Thanks Shawn!!
Somehow this made me think of better call saul 😅
I know these mask companies are trying to find other uses now that covid is tapering off in places, but an activated charcoal mask will not block vapors or particulates nearly as well as a dedicated respirator. A 3m 2097 filter will keep you way safer, but any NIOSH approved filter will do better than something that isn't approved by them. Stay safe guys, you only have one set of lungs. Loved the chessboard, the moment where you lined up all the squares was so satisfying.
I like your projeect 👏👏👏☺
Hello friend excuisme 🙏🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🤝
I have done very similar with Woodbex designs.
To be honest I really hate my RZ mask. Very hard to breathe out of and much too small and can’t return it
Mason, I feel the same way. Bought an RZ a year or so ago, and it just felt weird and I had to hold my neck a certain way for it to fit. Stopped using it and just went with a respirator instead.
