    It's time for an upgrade! Turdy is getting way too big for her 125 gallon aquarium so I went to Tractor Supply and bought a 300 gallon stock tank! It's really awesome, but it leaked at first. Time to decorate it and make it an amazing place for my turtle to live!

      Matthew Otis i read some things saying that it’s bad for the turtle to be in the water all the time but i can never get him to bask or anything. i was wondering if it was ever a problem with ur turtle or if you did something different with it

    • @motiszm
      @motiszm  4 роки тому +7

      @@draketingler6249 It is a problem with painted turtles and sliders, but with snapping turtles it is not. They can be fully aquatic if they want to be. That being said, your turtle will eventually bask when it feels like it! Mine will go for a month without basking, then all of the sudden I'll see her basking for hours at a time.

      Matthew Otis alright thanks! also, when yours was younger, did you notice him shedding on his shell and skin?

    • @motiszm
      @motiszm  4 роки тому +3

      @@draketingler6249 yes, she did shed more frequently. Now whenever she does it makes a huge mess! As they get bigger they don't shed the scutes on their shell anymore, but I seem to remember that happening when she was small.

    I think its awesome! I would rather raise water much higher for the fact that in the wild they are in deep deep water. I would raise the water till it hits that first line and raise the basking area! Great project!

      4 years old! They grow fast. I went from a 20 gallon tall to a 125 in the first two years, and then to a 300 gallon stock tank at 4 years old. It's probably cheaper in the long run to upgrade to the 300 as soon as possible since that can be it's permanent enclosure.

    Hey man cool video. My turtle is starting to out grow his 40 gal breeder tank.. I was thinking of getting a big 300 gallon Rubbermaid container just like the one that you have but mine will be made of plastic.. it will help dampen the sound a bit. So what all do you feed your turtle.

    Nice and large. If I had the space I would start like that with a baby snapper. It seem that anyone who owns a snapper has to constantly keep pace with the snappers growth rate. I think snappers grow faster than babies need new shoes.

    I would just have welded a long bead along the bottom rim and that WILL seal it forever lol.

    • @motiszm

    I went through two of these (new) galvanized "troughs" in a few months. Mine was a bit smaller. Mine was 6' long by 2' tall. I had mine all set up and full of water inside my house and it started leaking. From the seam. What a nightmare. No idea it could leak. I took the second one back (they had tested it in the store) and they gave me a different rubber one. I had no idea I needed to put silicone on it. You would think they would tell you??? Not happy but they were good to me but I wasted hours and water.

      What a nightmare. Yeah I'm happy to say that it's still going strong, but I'm sometimes paranoid about it leaking when I'm away on a trip.

    Hi! I’m desperate for help!! I have questions about fungal infections on a nearly 2 year old common snapping turtle. I’ve had mine over a year now he’s palm almost hand size and he recently got a fungal infection causing him to be red and kinda raw bloody in some spots, he had it once before from wrong sand I used and lost a claw but it grew back, he’s now in a 125g like yours with new everything but the infection came back. how do you care for a fungal infection on your snapper? I’ve been using instant ocean sea salt (this is actually m first day using it) and noticed better results in the wounds but he seems more sluggish. I’m desperate for help!!!! I’ve tried literally everything I could think of I’m at loss and your snapper looks healthy how do I properly heal mine ? Have you had any fungal infection problems with Turdy? Please and thank you!

    • @mackenziefrance
      @mackenziefrance 4 роки тому

      I’m also not able to find a single thing on UA-cam , google, or any other sites on how to properly treat a common snapping turtle youngin for a fungal infection so if you respond it’ll be a life saver!! I’m so desperate!

    • @motiszm
      @motiszm  4 роки тому +1

      @@mackenziefrance hey, sorry just seeing this now. First off you should join the snapping turtle fanatics group on Facebook and ask this question to them. I have never had this problem but it sounds like your filtration isn't adequate and your water is out of balance. The type of sand doesn't matter. First you should start dry docking your turtle. Just put it in a big Rubbermaid tote with a towel on the bottom and let him chill for a few hours on dry land. This will help him heal, but you've gotta get the water under control.

    @Matthew Otis , I recently acquired a baby snapping turtle any advice on what I would need for the baby snapper to assure it’s growing health? And do the snappers need a certain water temperature as baby’s and do they need a uvb/uva light? Really appreciate any answers you or anyone else can give me. Thanks!

    • @keniya4666
      @keniya4666 4 роки тому

      I recently found one the size of a quarter and have a I family friend who is a turtle educator and he told us to find small turtle diet pellets and shallow water if its a baby with rocks bigger than it is so it doesnt mistaken them for food, they need a basking area with a heat lamp and a water filter as well as a water heater and you have to feed them in the water

    • @keniya4666
      @keniya4666 4 роки тому

      We have another turtle weve had for a few years and hes thriving and we used the same technique so it definitely works well, and turtles dont need to be fed daily so if you dont want yours to grow huge really fast then feed it every other day to start and when it gets a little bigger like the size of your fist then start feeding it every two to three days. The more often you feed it, the quicker it grows.
