    Snappers look sort of aggressive, but they're really quite docile once you don't seem threatening (always be careful - they're fast!). I'm talking about those that are in the wild. I've now rehabbed one (recently properly released into a location that is the turtle's native habitat). I'm no expert here. I've had to move a bunch of wild snapping turtles just off my property (relocated just far enough so the turtles live longer - safety reasons). Ha ha, Turdy has that look of "Hey, throw me a treat or two". I mean, even the wild snapper I had for a short time was taking food I dropped in the water of my temporary setup. Turdy is like "Hey!!!!!" This was a video from 4 yrs ago, so I'm hoping Turdy is in a way BIGGER habitat. These snappers have so much personality.

    I have a baby snapper, I believe he was born in July. So my question is, how do I help him go bask on land? He hasn't done so in months and I'm worried he will get shell rot from all the times he stays submerged. Also, my second question, what vitamins do you recommend for healthy shell and bones? Thank you for your time and also, that turtle looks very happy

    • @motiszm
      @motiszm  4 роки тому +2

      Just make sure the basking area is easily accessible. Some snappers hardly ever bask, but don't worry, they won't get shell rot. I fed mine hikari turtle pellets when it was small, and switched to mazuri crocodile diet as it grew. I also feed her fish, rodents, cuts of meat, worms, crayfish, shrimp, etc. Just give them a wide variety and use a high quality pellet as a staple and they'll be healthy.

      Sun sun 404b from amazon filled with plastic mesh pot scrubbers from walmart and poly fill. It worked fine for a while but I eventually had to get an inline pump after the sun sun stopped being able to push the water through. I don't remember what it is but I'll look it up for you. If you buy a few dozen minnows eventually some get smart and become too quick for the turtle to eat.

    • @motiszm
      @motiszm  5 років тому +1

      The inline pump I'm using is an Ecoplus 633 fixed flow pump. It's rated at 590 gallons per hour which is similar to what the sun sun 404b advertises as it's flow rate.

    See your snapper is sleek like a race car. My Rufus looks like a Volkswagon Bug. OK Rufus your going on a diet. Who am I kidding. Rufus just begs and stares at me. I've gotta make a deal with a kid to feed Rufus in 2 months when I go away on vacation. I'm weaning Rufus off the 10-inch tweezer, and just creating a feeding spot in the tank. He does learn fast. Rufus doesn't like kids. He stares at them like a bird dog. I will move him and his head still faces at the kids.
    I have been noticing that you big snapper owners are always checking the foot padding and belly on your snappers. i have to give Rufus more walk time so he can used to lifting his heavy pork-eating butt off the ground.

    Okay so I have a question I’m getting a snapper soon and I was wondering if I needed a uvb light and if not what kind of light would you recommend and how do I test the temperature of the water

    • @motiszm
      @motiszm  5 років тому

      I don't have a uv bulb in my setup. I take my turtle out weekly for some natural uv in the yard. It's been shown that snappers live healthy lives in captivity without uv. Not saying that they don't benefit from it, but I feel satisfied with the amount she's getting from exploring the back yard.

      Also, heaters are not necessary and are actually dangerous as snappers have been known to bite cords. Room temp is fine.
