A Fallen Star with Don Helms

- Hank Williams has been one of my musical heroes since I could walk, and I have been lucky to meet many of his friends and family. I was blessed to tour and become friends with Don Helms. Don recorded this song with me, and this video is my tribute to Hank and my friend Don Helms.
In 1952 I was 6 years old, Hank played Live at the calabrese club, in Westerly RI. I was 6 years old, I went to see him with my uncles and my grandfather. I will never forget it. I remember it like it was yesterday. At my uncle funeral 40 years later the played all of Hank Williams songs, I sat there in tears.
If Hank Williams was alive today he would be 96 years old I wonder if he would still be singing his songs today 🤔

Andy, to expand the history some more for you, the fellow @ 3:10 beside Hank is Gene Fye. Gene is the reason I took up pedal steel guitar in the late 70's. As it turned out, he lived 15 miles from me and I spent a lot of time learning from him. He became a great friend and I took him with me to the Smoky Mtn Steel Guitar gathering one year in the late 90's. He met all his old friends and spent hours talking with them. Sadly, Gene is gone now but I will always treasure the memories.

A bit of history about Hank Williams and Don Helms. Before Don was playing on Hank; he had Jerry Byrd. And Jerry was the Greatest laptop Steel Guitar, there will ever be! Plus, a close friend. And I miss him so much.
Thus, Hank hired Jerry. So, Hank recorded with JB on a few recordings. But Jerry was SO "beat down"; by recordings with other Singers. That he just couldn't go on the road any more!
Hank was very "teary" about it. But he knew Jerry couldn't do it. And it was then, when Hank got Don Helms. And Don was in the recording room; when JB backed Hank, for the last time.
Now, most won't like what I am about to say, "i loved JB's style of playing of his SG. And Don didn't play like that. And I never liked it". But I met Don Helm later; and he was very kind to me; and we had a long talk. Plus, he gave me a signature'd photo; of the band after Hank died.. And I still have it in my 92 old age!
End of me history...and may Jesus rests HW's, JB's and DH's Souls. AMEN!
I have enjoyed Hank since his first record was released in the late 1940s. I saw the Hank for the first time at Louisiana Hayride in 1949 with my new Bride and Hank was wonderful. Now that the Good Lord has the whole gang back together listening to great songs, at my age I know I will see them soon again. a wonderful video of memories.
Every once in a while I hear a country song that calls to mind what country music used to be and ought to at least acknowledge again. This is one of those. I was exposed to Hank's music as a child by my mom, and that's the reason that I play guitar to this day. She had attempted to learn guitar as a younger woman, but only got as far as buying some of the old Hank Williams folios. I learned Hank's songs from those books and his records. Thank you for this post!

But the other thing I wanted to say is that Hank is the progenitor of everything to follow in not only Country, but Rock, and Metal. Most of these musicians don't even realize where their roots come from.

A lot of truth in this song , Nashville executives were as much to blame for Hank's death as Toby Marshall ( the fake doctor ).
Nashville kept Hank on the road , squeezing every dime they could out of him .
The Opry is a joke . Hank along with all the other great artists are NO longer considered Opry members after their death because the Opry can't make no money off them ( basically use them ) . Now days you show up in Nashville your a Opry member .
Hank was - is - always will be bigger then the Opry .

Great song here andy....thanks for sharing it on here. I was looking for some of dons stuff on here and came across david churchs' tribute album for Hank and listen to some of the tunes off of it after learning via his interview with don on being asked to play n do that album with david, he's done a great job on some of Hanks old songs and love what you've done here with this one...country music needs more songs like this!

In case anyone was wondering, I, Clint Dennis played All the other instruments on this recording, excluding steel guitar and Fiddle, though I didn't get much credit for it, and I also wrote this one for the museum, but it didn't go on the midnight album, give it a listen.

Hank had such a severe back condition and a doctor that sucked so bad, you cannot fault him at all for his drinking, or drug abuse, as the drugs were from the dcc, the alcohol was from the pain. It's the one thing from the Outlaws and even his own sons later that I wish they'd not attribute to being a rite of passage. Hank didn't want to be a drug addict, or an abuser, so don't emulate that.
Meanwhile, the terrible marriage stuff wasn't great either.
