The greatest Country music and writer that ever lived. This song is from his Luke the Drifter Album. It is so true and very sad like many of his great songs. Live and learn. I first heard this performed by the Seldom Scene, many decades ago. Until today, I had no idea Hank wrote it.
He didn''t, it's a traditional song written at the end of the 19th century, Woody Guthrie did also his version in the 40's i guess, he just wrote the part of the last picture of the soldier in Korea. Hank absolutely nailed it with his interpretation, his heartful voice it's perfect for this little gem of compassion and brotherhood and he didn't even sing except for the chorus just one time, mesmerizing to say the least. This recording in particular is pure gold, i much prefer this live version to the studio one in 1952 for the Luke the Drifter LP.

The hillbilly Shakespeare. Mr. Hank Williams. As Luke the drifter. Best!
