You know... I had a beaver coming up into my yard marking trees. So I put snares next to the trees he was marking. I didn't want more damage done to the trees if he got caught, so I nailed the washer of a drowning rod to the tree and drove the other end into the ground and fastened the snare to the drowning lock. So when he got caught he would be 10 foot from the tree and couldn't reach it. Worked like a charm, in the morning he was far away from the tree at the end of the rod and all he could do was dig and rip up the grass.
I thought there were more, but the marking stopped when I got him.

Your'e quite the enabler , I just made a order from Southern snares. I ran out of money so I'll have to make do without the expensive bush craft knife. I've got a few traps left over from the around 1980 ish when I was trying to make some gas money to cruise town trying to impress the chicks.

Great video, Tim. One thing i'd like to mention about the part where you were jamming #9 wire in the ground. The "Redman Snare Tool" from Dakota Line (or made easily at home) makes that work great in frozen ground. A piece of bright tape on the wire that ends up below the ground aids in retreaval after a catch so it can be re used.

Quick question, MT. Do you advise boiling or dying trapping wired that used to anchor traps or to support snares? The stuff I ordered seems to be coated in oil or a similar substance. Thanks.

I play the angles. I also think about what speed the animal will be traveling when my set is hit. The different snare locks are loaded to fire like i want an the o'clock you set lock at is a tool for letting smaller critters slide thru. Them split sticks are slick aint they lol .

You had mentioned something about snaring a deer, that's something I'd like to try, which snare do you recommend for that? And do you have an instructional/tip video specifically for deer?
Why would you want to snare a deer?? He's talking about a survival situation. Pretty sure all states it's illegal to snare/trap deer.
One comment kinda verged toward this question but didn't completely hit it. You've spoken about fast firing snares; does it also matter where the lock is set? That is, do you want it to be always as much as possible at the 12 o' clock position on your loop, or should you try and place it more at 11 or even at 1 to keep it maybe a bit more out of line of sight of the intended prey animal?
Excellent question - I cover this topic in my demos at the nta , but I think this would make for a good video in and of itself. Stay tuned and thank you for the suggestion.

And at the risk of being more annoying than helpful, could I also ask about what other critters you've trapped that perhaps you've had and enjoyed as table fare? Nutria or muskrat or such? Utah has beaver of course, but are some of these other types of aquatic mammals good for getting snaring experience while still being a viable addition to food supplies?
