And I`m only 65 and this song can bring me to tears, a classic from 1967 when my mother was still alive, she passed away just 2 years later, if ONLY I could go back in time.
This story was shared with me by an old friend: Before I left to serve my country in Vietnam, when I was a teenager, I would go to Diane’s house to listen to records. Diane’s parents were very friendly and with 4 teen and preteen children of their own they were glad to host the neighborhood kids as long as it didn’t get out of hand. Other than noise and foot stompin’ to the groovy tunes of the Beatles, The Monkees, The Doors, The Turtles, The Buckinghams and yes, The Rascals, we were well behaved. I was a skinny kid, weighed about 115 pounds and stood about 5 foot 5. I hadn’t begun my growth spurt when I first started going to Diane’s. And neither Diane, whom I adored, or her girlfriends paid much attention to this little goofball. And then as years went on and as I grew, one by one the guys in the group were shipped off to Vietnam and things at Diane’s got quieter and quieter. As I grew Diane started to pay more attention to me and by the time it was my turn to go, well, I could honestly say Diane was my gal. But, with my impending departure off to war I couldn’t be sure if Diane would still be there when I got back from ‘Nam. The Rascals song “How Can I Be Sure” played over and over in my mind. I wouldn’t be surprised if Diane found someone else during my absence and I told her if she did find another guy that I would understand. On our last night together we were alone on her couch, Diane’s parents respecting our need for privacy stepped out for dinner. We held hands and listened to music and as this song played in the background we kissed pleasantly but somewhat awkwardly for the first time. How could I know at the time that it would be the first of thousands of kisses we would eventually share? But still I wondered as I shipped out, how can I be sure? As often as Diane tried to assure me it constantly nagged at me for the 11 months I served in combat. Well, it needn’t have bothered me. When I got home Diane was at the bus station to greet me. It was the happiest day of my life. It turns out that I could have been sure the whole time. Just before this past Thanksgiving I said goodbye to Diane for the last time after nearly 50 years together. Yes, it was and still is sad for me. But I know one glorious day when I am called home, I will say hello to Diane once again. How can I be sure? I just know, Diane told me I would.
My favorite Rascals tune. What a vocal range. Wonderful writing. It's got it all and I love it. Loved it for a gozillion years now. Peace to all you Rascals fans out there.
I absolutely love this song it is the most amazing mesmerising video is the blonde lady in the video Julie Christie she is beautiful. The lead singer is so handsome, could listen to this song on repeat for ever.
Yeah isn't it funny how much the sounds exactly like the studio cut on their album that's so strange I wonder why that is oh yeah it's because everybody especially the ones who made these little television Studio show appearances would lip sync and thats facts facts facts all day long do your homework and research and find out yourself and I apologize for bursting your bubble of ignorance but like when a woman has sex for the first time her hymen is broken and its just gotta be done. I mean sure you can go about trying to do it a certain way but the way i see it is it's just gotta be broken so just get it done & over with you know?
+Wolf Boy Ok, not my favorite Rascals songs but it doesn't matter because this guy's voice was so incredible, I love to hear anything he sang. I wish the guy eternity.

The key to Eddie’s vocal prowess is quite simple. He was gifted with those incredible Italian singing genes. Pure and simple. (and I’m not even Italian!) Kudos to the Sons of Italy.
It's not that simple. I'm thoroughly Italian and I can't sing to save my life. Now, I've got relatives who are pretty good but it looks like there's a lot of scatter in singing talent among the Italians I know. But Eddie Brigati, yeah, he can sing.
Bravo, Eddie Brigatti. What a great singing voice you have. How Can I Be Sure was such a great song, the words had such meaning. You sang it great. The Rascals are #1 to me. All the members so talented. Thank you for the great music.
If you grew up in the Northeast, The Young Rascals were like The Beach Boys. It was impossible to spin the radio dial and not hear them. They were the Northeast's Garage Band.
I have loved this song since The Rascals recorded it, I was 16 then and I'm, almost 70 now. Thanks for the live video. So many memories of that time in this.
Always loved the Accordion playing in the background; gives the song kind of an Italian/Jewish "Old World" quality, like when you fall in love for the first time with a Jewish girl from college. I remember those days :)
David Weiss..... Yes. I do believe just as you do. NO ONE ELSE COULD HAVE DELIVERED THIS SONG AS EDDIE BRIGATI DID! That is because.... Not ONLY did he have a great voice.... but... Eddie Brigati had an AMAZING VOCAL RANGE!!!

+Karen MacGregor Agree completely. With the rap crap and other hate songs, I enjoyed this era's much more. And there were no songs with cussing and such. Times and music has changed.
Yes. All I knew when I was a teenager was... that I loved this song ( and... the Rascals were my favorite American group! ). But... as I grew older... These songs were played all of the time while I was growing up. As I got older I dug more deeply into the era. I discovered more music. It seemed as if it would never end, but eventually, it pretty much did, because the 60s ended. I laugh when I see people say "This music brings back memories of good times" and they're 20 years older than I am. It's because for me, it brings back memories of the good times as well. I never really cared for the music from my era. Oh; and yes, I agree, this is one of the greatest songs ever.
I know as the years pass, styles change with them all around, but I could never understand how this style of music couldn't keep going on forever, but it's not forgotten.
Memories when I was 10 or 11 in the mid 60's riding at the back of my old man's car, an early model AMC Ambassador station wagon, sky blue with the window roll down, Rambler. And this song was playing. Back than I didn't really thinking about song, just my old man's Rambler;🙂
Eddies linguine fueled vocals are right up there with Motown's finest soul singers. Makes me proud to be Italian. Oh yeah I almost forgot, I grew up about 20 minutes from these guys. Jersey is a great place.
With all of the anti war protests and songs (Viet Nam), this is a love song, that is pure. One of the best I've ever heard, as the song speaks of love and devotion. A needed song for those days, and possible these days, also.
I guess what Biden is doing to us is even more beautiful. There were a lot of non-protest songs then , really the protest songs were a small minority on the radio. You can never be sure. One day you're the young rascals then the rascals. Touch me but don't take me down ? I can't understand such depth.
How is it that this song evokes so much emotion. It has all the ingredients. Writing perfection. Instrumentation is excellent. Eddie's vocal range is impeccable. He certainly brings out the best in the lyrics and it's great to know that there was a true story attached to it. Timeless!!

One of the best love songs of the late '60s/"hippie" era in rock & rock-related music (since these guys were also blue-eyed Soul progenitors). Anyway, that's saying a LOT. Still brings me to tears, many years after hearing it around the age of 11, for the first time...
It just keeps getting better every time I heat it. What a great song to sing as well. You can't sing it without feeling it, you just can't; It's there.
Amazing memories. That voice this song just like yesterday. Thank you

Eddie was my favorite. I also loved his dancing! Check him out in Mickey's Monkey! ua-cam.com/video/mdqIwtYXF54/v-deo.html
Supebly written. Great key change and brilliant orchestral arrangement. Great band too.
Love this version... Never heard anyone else sing this song Apart from Gorgeous David Cassidy in the 70s. 😊
I was 12 and had such a crush on him!! Love these guys!!!
Me too! And still do!
This group...so Under rated.
No they're not underrated any longer. They were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
i love the oldies but goodies
A beautiful song--they don't make them like this anymore...
especially for "a girl like you"...those times are gone but live on in the music. they were miraculous times.. I miss them. you are one beautiful lady.
And they haven't for quite some time.
ronald lucero Ron are you the original " lounge lizard" ? shirt collar to your shoulders, unbuttoned almost to your navel, gold chains , blown dry hair, oh yeah ronnie that's you baby.

Oh my gosh! Feeling my teen years! So bittersweet in that they were wonderful years and I want back there! Love this! Thanks for the memories!

One of the five greatest love songs of all time
One of the best love songs of the late '60s/"hippie" era in rock & rock-related music (since these guys were also blue-eyed Soul progenitors). Anyway, that's saying a LOT. Still brings me to tears, many years after hearing it around the age of 11, for the first time...
It really does tug on the heart strings
It makes me cry as well
Every song ... excellent. One of the all time great groups
Great Band..this song is one of the Best!!!
This showcases Eddie's vocal talent nicely, thanks.
Mmm..No cell phones...no viruses...Very little TV...Best Music if ALL TIME...We were Truely Blessed to have lived in that era...Thank you...👍
Eddie!
One of the greatest songs ever written and performed.
It just keeps getting better every time I heat it.
What a great song to sing as well. You can't sing it without feeling it, you just can't; It's there.
