Awesome sailing vid........thanks for sharing your adventure
Thanks for watching Bud!
Pyjama trousers and down jacket for the big downwind sections, I love it!!
Keeping it real, this how we camp and cruise too. Best of luck you two.
😁 and I thought I’d get slagged off for it 😁 Thanks a lot Alex! Fair winds
Your Vids are put together very well.
TY for sharing.
Thank you for watching! 😊
Great to see you enjoying such champagne sailing.
Haha thanks Paul!
Starting to behave like old salts I see. 2 1/2 meter swell, 25 knots o' wind , 9.5 knots o' speed and not a hair was turned!😀 Keep 'em coming guys. Loving every one.
Thanks a lot Michael, we definitely pushed our boundaries a little bit further with that one.
Cool, good vibe! Mixing it up with the big ships.

Wow what a passage! And a great youtube video thank you
Excellent video, really connives the cruising experience well.
Hi Guys, great channel, good to see a small cat get out there and doing it in a low cost way. We used to sail a 31ft Prout and know how it feels surfing down the fronts a following waves, exhilarating!!!
Cheers! Yes, the smaller Prouts are very similar to the HT. Fair winds!
Hi, yes we have now traded up to a 37ft
Prout Snowgoose and are getting ready for our adventures, haven't sailed her yet in any big seas ;)
Lovely! That was our dream cat, but we couldn’t afford it 😁 look forward to seeing what you get up with on her.
Loved that following sea...Go Kittiwake! 😎👍
Thanks Clifford, she handled it beautifully :)
Is yours a custom Twins? I've looked at a few and couldn't get from the salon to the aft cabin unless you go via the cockpit .
We believe it’s been modified, but our PO didn’t know the history of the vessel. Are you looking to buy one?
PS gotta love autocorrect 😂 afternoon cabin 😁
Sailing Kittiwake I’m in a mono right now, but would like the extra room and stability. I spoke to a marina in Falmouth who said they don’t entertain cats. Seemed strange as a Catalac 9m is a similar width to a blue water 40+ foot boat. I like afternoon cabins. Especially if they are aft. ;-)
The HT is a bluewater cat 😊 many have crossed oceans and a few even circumnavigated.
I used to work in Algeciras & Gibraltar Ports & I have a sail boat is berthed in Alcaidesa Marina La linea. Its not unusual to have many merchant ships drifting 20 miles east of Gib. Tankers are there waiting for a favourable price for their cargo or they might load or discharge alongside to each other . There might be ships kept out there to avoid congestion in the bay & proceed in when its their turn. Ships anchor at Gibraltar to take bunkers make engine repairs & crew change . I really enjoy your videos.
Ah thanks, that explains it. Just never seen ships drifting around like that before.
That was a good video (loved the music too). A good start to your Med season. Let’s have more dialogue about your wind vane experience - the fine tuning et al.👍⛵️
Thanks a lot Norman, in the video where we start using it, you'll get plenty of wind vane chat :)
Hi Elena/Ryan. Just thought I'd drop you both a line to say good morning to you both. Hope the weather is good where you are. It's cats and dogs here in merseyside. Terry....
Thanks a lot Terence! It’s sunny and hot here, sorry 😁😁😁 we don’t miss the British weather.
If you fancy a video and a cuppa, our next episode goes live this afternoon 😊😉
Great video thanks for sharing it with us :)
Cheers! Thanks for watching.
Enjoy this time period at med but also be carful the wind. Have nice seas!
Thanks for the tip, we've definitely found it changes a lot more quickly in here than on the Atlantic side, and we experienced our first 'water bomb' storm recently - bit of an eye opener!
GREAT video! I've teased you before about not pressing the boat but you were really flying this time! 9 knots is hauling the mail! I too, am looking forward to more information about the windvane, especially because of your twin rudder setup.
Thanks a lot Ajax! Admittedly, 9 knots was faster than we wanted to be going!
Thanks guys great video with excellent shots. Looked like you learned more about your boat in heavey weather and honed your sailing skills aswell, 9.5 knots is impressive, been on my boat (30 foot mono) before doing 7.6 on a reach she was burying her in rail got a bit twitchy soon as i could i reefed in. Might be diffrent downwind but i know i have rigging over 18 years old so is always in the back of my mind!
We were completely reefed down when we did 9.5knots 😁 it’s because we surfed the big waves. Without the surfing we were doing about 6 knots, reefed. It was an exhilarating experience 😉
@@SailingKittiwake thanks guys bet it was exhilarating looking forward to your next update
brilliant so good.
Yay! So glad you enjoyed it 😊
Some of those container ships were HAULING! Maybe you're finally getting your Sea Legs, Elena.
Well done!
Thanks a lot :)
Welcome to the med. No real tide but plenty of wind. your going to have a great time. Enjoy the scenery and culture. Sip the ouzo and not to much.
Thanks a lot! Although Ouzo... not so much haha. Amaretto for Elena and Rum for Ryan!
Have you thought about adding a bowsprit of some sort? It could help a bit with sailing into the wind. Also sad to think of we were in spain at the same time and I didn't know...
I read of someone doing that on a Twins, but we've not really thought about it that much, the points where the bridle would have to attach would be tricky to get to, being low down right in the bow.
Hi Guys, well you are officially in the med. the ship traffic in the straits can be awful and they have a law unto themselves at time. At least you don't have tides to contend with now???. enjoy the sailing and the sun. fair winds and calm seas to you both. look forward to your next vid. Take care. Tony SV Kedim.
Thanks a lot Tony! Yep, no tides is a luxury although it has its own little challenges!
that looked like fun, tackling higher winds that your used too and surfing the waves.well, I watched a video explain how a wind vane works so i'm a little bit wiser(I think). it looks quite a complicated set up to me so well done for your practicality in fitting it. excuse my ignorance but I may be asking a stupid question here, I think I understand that the windvane steers the boat with the wind but if you didn't have one, wouldn't the wind steer you in that direction with just the sails?? you can tell I have never been on a non engine boat. another great video, I really am hooked and binge watching thanks guys.
well done you two. keep up the good work :-)
Thank you Iain! 😊
What a shame you didn't get to visit "The Rock"! We did so on a cruise a couple of years ago and so glad we did so. Amazing! So sorry you've been under the weather but with that down wind leg, things looked to be a bit better for you kids. Your boat looks to be very stable and quick. Love watching your site and look forward to each episode.
Would you please get rid of the stupid music it may be your taste but it's not mine. It is a distraction from the overall experience. Just just the sailing is enough and it's interesting. I doubt that you have music blaring at 90% of the time when you are sailing. Obviously I like your posts. It would be so much better without the music thanks
Hi guys. How are you getting the AIS info onto the tablet?
Have you ever tried using one of those yellow/orange earplugs to deal with seasickness? Its supposed to work but I have never tried it.
We've tried it without much success to be honest. Worth a go though, might work for you!
So much for Mr. lit man and his musical preferences! While you are at it, maybe you can block him from your site so the rest of us can Enjoy All of your postings Including the music!!!!!!
Haha we get 20% saying 'shut that music up' and 80% saying 'we enjoy the music' so we go with the majority and our own preference, glad you like it! We always welcome constructive feedback though, its led to us making some improvements I think.
Easy watching on the screen but I tend to spend the entire time trying to really place myself in the moment.. another cool video guys, well done! My day is coming! :)
Thanks a lot Steve, glad you enjoy following along!
Hey it's good to know the boat will be good for some of those trade wind route you might take some time in the future . So glad its comfortable ( ish)
Cheers warren
Very cool, well done both of you. Growth only comes from getting out of your comfort zone 😁
But what about the new wind vane? I was eagerly waiting for a report on how it was doing, or did i miss that in a previous video? I wld be very keen to know how it performed, tks
Cheers! 😊 We released a video all about the wind vane yesterday and episode 21 went live last week 😊👋
Sailing Kittiwake thanks, I'll check it out!
Next time try le canal du midi, should be a smoother ride.
what boat you got?
Ps; how’s the wind vein working out? Looks like it’s ok !
It's great so far! Although we wanted some friendlier conditions than the trip up to Ibiza to start using it. Definitely more of a learning curve, but rewarding and definitely gets you thinking about sail trim more :)
There have been best conditions for the windvane, but it was not in use as it was to see, 25 to 30 kn from behind ,best conditions to make distance into the med, southern med spain is no good sailing revier, nearly no anchoriges and the harbours are expensive.
Hi Peter, we actually found some nicer anchorages than we were expecting in south Spain but they're definitely a bit spaced out.
Maybe I see them in following videos?
Yep. One was in this video - Roquetas De Mar. There’s more coming up 😉 We didn’t spend a penny 😊
Did you get to give the wind vane a good try out? I'm really curious how your rig works out. Looked chilly to me but your becoming seasoned passage makers. Cheers.
Hi Ken, not on this passage - we wanted some calmer conditions to get to know it :) been working great though, more fun and rewarding than the autopilot! Thanks for the kind words :)
😁 Nice job once again!!! Thanks for taking me along...what time frame is this episode from?? I believe we are close to the same longitude and its hotter than blue blazes here in America in the month of August. Safe Journeys Young Travelers!!!
Thanks so much Jerry! This was the second half of April. It’s been hot hot hot since June here 😊
@@SailingKittiwake I look forward to your next adventure installment with great anticipation!!
Do you have an AIS transponder?
Receiver only for us. Is a great addition though!
How long did you prepare yourself before starting the travel? I mean have you take any sailing courses or make any exams - like radio usage for VHF? Ryan looks like to have very good knowledge to fix_ repair boats. As well you both knowledge how to paint boats. Thanks so much for your videos. I am virtually travelling with you...
Woo!9knots!Go Kittiwake!!Check out the song Lee of Christian Island by Gordon Lightfoot.See if you like it!Lovely video keep safe tho pushing it!x
Thanks a lot Andrew we'l check it out :)
9 knots is good time for that boat, we are hugely dissatisfied with anything under 10 knots but it's hugely unreasonable to expect a cruising boat to match a 64' Simonis designed Robertson and Caine custom built Cape to Rio ocean racer, we average around 11 knots with only a fully furled cruising Genoa, around 130℅ with 15 knots apparent on the beam, it's good fun racing on her, we've clocked 21 knots SOG before with the racing rig (Hank on Genoa, jib and main) If you've never sailed on a racing yacht, you should try and set something up, really good fun but you need at least 8 crew to handle a big fast boat like WARRIOR, the boom is longer than 'kittiwake' at 9m with a 26m high triple spreader rodded standing rigging with running backstays, hydraulic inner forestay, backstay and vang, 13 self tailing cockpit winches and twin interlinking pedestal grinders on primaries and main sheet. Cool video, I want to see 10 knots from you guys👊👊😎
Did you notice the Mosque when passing Europe Point, just behind you at min 2.27?
Didn't notice it, no. Nice spot for one though!
Highly symbolic: Gibraltar means Mount of Tarik, the Moor conqueror who crossed in 711 AD. Not a good message for Europe. (My personal opinion). Changing argument: could you be so kind as to give some info on your wind vane? Bye and Buon Viaggio.
Sure thing. It’s a South Atlantic windvane 😊 Been working great so far 😊
@@SailingKittiwake Yep, that's right, Gibraltar comes from the arabic words Jebel Tarik (mountain of Tarik), named after Tarik ibn Ziyad, the muslim leader who crossed from North Africa to settle in Spain. But the mosque doesn't date back to those early days. It was built in the late 90's with donated funds from the king of Saudi Arabia (at least that's what is writen above the gates).
Those drifting tankers look strange first time you find yourself in the middle of them. They just sit there and drift around waiting for their orders.
No tide in the Med, but be double wary with the weather in the Med. As you have probably discovered by now, it can change pretty fast.
Yep, it can be very variable, as we found out. Now there’s daily thunderstorms instead.
Nice passage planning to match your reserves. Good sail plan set up to maintain a comfortable speed. And bravo for seeking one of the alternative ports to rest up and let the fronts blow through.
I am proud of your wise thinking.
Thanks a lot Nigel, we definitely feel like we're learning a lot and improving our planning and decisions. Thanks for supporting our videos, following along and leaving such nice comments :)
What’s the boat ? Put it in the description. 🤷♂️
... go through the videos. I think two or four more you got the sales video.
Not bad. It's currently £1.34 a ltr in uk
It's currently over €2 in Sardinia!
@@SailingKittiwake allot of sailing liveaboards are going electric. With all the solar panels etc. Wouldn't it be worth going hybrid and keeping a smaller engine (to keep weight down) as a generator to charge battery and or run motor if needed. Best of both worlds.
30 pounds for 45 liters of petrol! What does that come to in American?
40usd for 12gallons
@@jorinator123 I wish:))
@@TheReclinerPilot yea, prices have gone mad since my comment. When the other guy asked his question, that was the actual price. Insane
$3.17 per US gallon. [At today’s (5/5/23) exchange rate]
Four days with no sleep on a passage! Nuts?
Hi,
when I sail downwind longer distances I never use the main, but instead two foresails, the genua with the fixed Spinnaker pole and a smaler fock with a second pole, this way is much safer, you have not to watch the boom and the reducing and increasing of the sails is very easy. And it is easyer for the windvane to do its work.
Thanks for the tip Peter! Our wide sheeting angle makes it a dream to sail downwind under just Genoa - the headsail will stay filled until very almost dead downwind, we haven't used our spinnaker pole in ages which is really nice as I find it a pain in the butt.
Please! Please! Please! What’s the music on 9min?!
Go to Trieste!
Thanks for the recommendation although it's a bit out of our way!
Maybe next time!
