The green Alpinist is the classic. Anyone who can't integrate a little green watch into their outfit doesn't know how to dress. Green is one of the most used neutral colors in nature and goes with most other colors. Seiko definitely charged a premium for that blue dial.
walked into a jewelry store looking for a g-shock. walked out with one of these sitting in the back of the store. Also have the green in the collection. Cream dial one seems pretty sweet.
I own the Green Alpinist, infact when i got into watch collecting in my modest way about 2 years ago i clapt eyes on one and fell in love with it instantly. I love green so it was right up my ally ,it was and still is the most expensive watch in my collection ( i did say it was modest). Not keen on the blue it just dose not work for me i am afraid. As for the new ones it seems that Seiko as much as i love the brand are doing the same as they did with the Seiko 5 range making modest changes and pushing the price up! Great vid Jody as always.
Hi mate i am only 14 and have just started loving watches i purchased my first ever watch as a casio and am loving it. Found the channel about a week ago and have gone back and watched a ton of your previous videos.

@@JustOneMoreWatch also as i am only 14 i don't have a huge budget to spend on watches so it is good that there are a good range of decent watches out there for a fairly low price.
I think the green alpinist is absolutely gorgeous. I put mine on an oyster from strapcode. It fits it perfectly and has been banging around on my wrist for a year and a half.
I have this one. Gorgeus watch and I wear it regularly (wearing it now actually). I love how the coloring changes depending the light.. When it's darker you have this dark sunburst dial and outside you get that matt lighter blue color, like on the renders. And the size is perfect for my slim wrist!
The green and gold are classy and have more character IMO. Also looks amazing with the right brown leather...which we all know Seiko most definitely did not send with it. A bit small for me though so I sold mine and unfortunately I do miss the little guy.
I actually prefer the new models. I think the date cyclops looks great. I can't get my head around why more companies don't go with cyclops more often. When done right, (not the case for the Steinhart GMT you recently reviewed, I'll give you that), I think it looks class. The decrease in text on the dial is also another winner for me.
I got the blue one. it grows on you. never had a blue that changed so much in different lighting conditions. I'll pick up the new black one or green next year!
Being a student in this channel. I learned what type of watch i can buy with 500 to 700 usd. Too many options i like more than this watch. Nice work Jody.
Picked up the blue alpinist this holiday season, truly beautiful! For the folks worried about the new seiko price, no need, it will be popping up at your local macys for a staggering discount. Just like the rest of the prospex line sold at macys
Great video. 'Hodinkee' have just dropped an article a couple of hours ago with new photos. Also a couple of hours ago 'A blog to watch' has just released an article with photos of wait for it...4 new Seiko Alpinists. 1 Green, 1 Black, 1 White and 1 Cream.
I got my SARB017 in March, so shortly before this was released, and have never regretted it at all. The green Alpinist is just so classic and has so much character, which I kind of feel this one lacks unfortunately.
I quite like the green and gold color of the original SARB017, although I am a bit of a sucker for gilt indexes and I like that the green is a little more rare in a world filled with blue, black, and white dialed watches. But I agree that almost double the price for an extra 20 hours power reserve, a cyclops, and a display caseback isn’t really worth it for the new one
Great video as usual. This is my dream. I think this is the pretties Seiko out there. I love the blue. I liked the green ones also, but that blue is incredible.
I love this watch, but not the price. I’m one of those apparently odd ducks who actually like the green and gold. I just wish I could afford to pick up the old version.
The pagani design two tone bluesy I ordered after watching ur ali Express 11/11 video finally arrived, and man I was impressed at the quality for the price. Great call on that one!
Seiko are releasing the Alpinist with the green, black and white dial, to get back into the market with a lot of variety and increase in price. I think Seiko is now trying to raise the ceiling for their mid-tier watches, and offer less lower-tier models.
Blue being my fave color I thought when this came out I would prefer it to the green but nope green is still king for me. Not sure I get this watch at the price of the new ones, I guess well see what they actually trade for when the dust settles.
The old green alpinist pops way better than the blue ive the green my m8 had a blue the green just plays better in the natural light im a green kind of guy lol 👍
So glad I got my 017 when I did, aesthetically I prefer it over the blue and much more so over the new ones! Hoping for a couple of strap options from Santa for it as it’s still on the factory strap.
I had the standard green alpininst on a strap code jubilee and selling it is my biggest regret.. such quality for the 400 quid I paid altogether and so unique.
As much as I enjoy and appreciate my Seiko 5, I certainly wouldn't consider myself a Seikophile either. Interestingly enough, I was surprised to find out that we also share two other commonalities, that neither of us are Japanese nor mountaineers! I think I'll also wait until someone sends me one, before I spend that kind of money as well. Great review, Jody!
My alpinist was the only 6r15 equipped seiko I’ve owned that ran in an acceptable fashion lol. All the others I’ve had were right at the outer bounds of what was considered “in spec”
Seiko did not release all 1959 of the blues at once through Hodinkee. There were some for 25% off Black Friday on the Seikousa site, which were gone by the time I saw it! On the new ones, the 6r35 is a little thinner than 6r15, so will that shave any height off the watch, or is that taken up by a thicker display case back?
Great video, Jody. I've come to love my sarb017 after purchasing it more as an opportunity buy when it was announced to be discontinued. The blue Alpinist has generated interest in the new Alpinist models, but I can't help but think Seiko is making a risky bet in the style changes when they could have easily duplicated the blue in a black and creme color way.
Im always fascinated when I read many watch fans saying the seiko alpinist is to expensive , in my opinion with the specs and build quality of this watch it is equal if not better than many watches costing double the price.
Just wanted you to know, I purchased the Pagani Submariner dive watch and I couldn’t be happier. Adjustment with the screws was easy. Fits perfectly and looks and feels fantastic! I’m very impressed and appreciate your thorough and honest review! You are the man I’ll go to for my next watch as well. What have you got for an Omega seamaster homage? Anything from Pagani? Thanks again my friend!
I love my SPB089, purchased at list from Hodinkee. The blue is certainly versatile, and I love the way the light reflects off the silver indices/numerals on a cloudy day. I just received the Strapcode Super-O brushed bracelet for it for my birthday, and I plan on getting a blue sailcloth type strap for it as well. I don't think the included strap is bad, but it could be better. My wife does like the vintage look of the strap. As for the new Alpinists, they've just announced the U.S. releases of them today (they even get U.S. model numbers, not just imports!). The black one is my favorite, though I do like the color matched date wheels better. I've seen a lot of fuss about the Prospex logo, but it is an absolute non-issue for me. The Alpinists have been in the Prospex line for years, so it makes sense for them to finally get the logo. The cyclops doesn't bother me too much. Having seen the display case back, I don't see the point. The movement certainly is not anything pretty to look at. Seems a waste. I did notice they added anti-reflective coating on the sapphire. Also note that the leather straps apparently have deployant clasps. There is a limited release e-retailer only cream one with champagne dial/gold indices. It has a deployant clasp version of the SPB089 strap. That one doesn't do much for me personally. I think after the initial release hype dies down, we'll see some slightly lower prices on them like we do most Seikos. Thanks for providing your usual honest review of the Blue Alpinist. I definitely enjoyed it.
Jory, Hate to burst your bubble, but the Alpinist does not have applied markers. They are stamped into the sail and ?painted?plated?.. somewhere I have in my memory an image of the back of one of these dials showing the stamped marks. Still looking for it tho.. That said- still a great watch. I am gonna try to mod a compass bezel- removing the directions and painting (Hah!?) markers for time on there.
Personally I've never been into that type of hands and I have no need or desire for a compass on my watch. If they switched the inner bezel to a normal minute track like on the skx and then switched to sword hands... That is very close to my perfect watch.
@@christianwilliams4795 fair enough. Not really the same style of watch as this but if you haven't maybe check out the Boldr Expedition, a SW200, and a bezel that has some sort of clutch system in it so it doesn't move when you screw the crown back down. The fully lumed one is pretty epic. Also Stratton is releasing a dual crown 200m watch with a miyota 9000 series in it for pretty cheap, they look quite nice.
I think the new 2020 alpinist will eventually retail for less than the rrp (as most big manufacturer watches do), possibly in the US$500 range. In Japan, the sarb 017 rrp is ¥54,000 ($500) but now still available on the Amazon Japan site for ¥41,580 ($380, bargain?) and that’s including 10% consumption tax.
Could be mistaken, but aren’t you a fan of a ‘Hulk’ Jody? If so, what’s your beef with the green of the SARB017? Personally, I love mine and think it works brilliantly with all sorts of outfits, although, IMHO, it only really starts to work once you’ve ditched the crappy croc and paired it with a strapcode jubilee in SS and gold. Then it looks way more classy.
The engraving on the back of the green version looks much better than on this limited edition. For around 400 bucks I probably pick up an extra Alpinist as a reserve or to flip in a couple of years. The new ones don't even have a signed crown at that new price point.
Nice watch and review, Jodie. That really is a nice shade of blue on the dial. Like you, I'd prefer to buy one of the older models in new condition as they're still readily available and considerably less $$. I've been wanting a SARB for quite some time. A couple days ago I purchased the Seiko Prospex Special Edition PADI 200M Divers 62MAS - SPB071 and it arrived today. It is far nicer than I thought it would be. I definitely won't be in the market for any new time pieces for a while.
Jody, for me the blue dial and silver numbers takes the "SPECIAL" out of the Alpinist. For me the green dial of the sarb017 is the focal point when I dress and don't try and combine it with like clothing colors.
I don't know what possessed Seiko to put a cyclops on the new Alpinists. I'm excited that they're back since I want to own one some day, but really not a fan of that new addition.
I actually prefer my green alpinist. The green and gold is beautiful with a black or brown lizard strap. So glad I got it for under 400USD from new before the hype and price started to increase.
Sarb017 was an absolute mess with the green gilt and white. The seiko logo not matching the colour of the text on the dial was pretty disorganised too. This is a beauty.
1.) Thanks for the video! 2.) The blue is too dark for my liking 3.) I'd choose the black dial Alpinist because I like the versatility 4.) I hate making lists
I do find it frustrating when photos don't colour match well with the actual item. Blue is a hard one to get right when it comes to my tastes. I like the inky blue dials but do not care for the mid-blue look. It can make the difference between a purchase or not so surely it is worth them trying to get it right?
Just One More Watch it was you in a pre-video ad before your video started. Sorry skipped it so don’ t remember what the watch brand was, but you cannot mistake the Aussie voice!
I loved the green an gold. Ended up getting a green and rose gold Undone Basecamp instead as the SARB017 is still too much $$ for me. Or at least more than I'm willing to spend right now on one watch (3 incoming)
Very nice review! The old 017 is nicer overall than the blue one and definitely nicer than the new one that's due for release in 2020. Seiko is doing with the alpinist, the same thing they did with the Sumo, with the mention that the new Sumo looks better than the new 2020 Alpinist. I think older Seikos are a better investment overall, as the new ones are way too pricey, without being really justifiable. And yes, I have the old 017 Alpinist and the old 033 Sumo, and they are both awesome watches. PS: I kinda dig that new black SS Alpinist, but not at over 700$ though.
Ok a nerdy comment.... If you can see the sun depending it northern or southern hemisphere you can get either due north or south just using the hour hand ( taking into account DST) The compass bezel ain't that much use ?The minute hand gives you the before and gone mid day reference.Cheers and sorry for such a dire comment!
I love these alpinist especially the blue one & I like white in the new models but you are right Jody it’s not worth it to spend $300 more on a slightly upgrade movement and a display case back when on the other hand you can still buy original one and you know the original is original alpinist i mean the real alpinist. 🙂
I think it would look great on a nice light gray suede strap, frankly. Gotta admit, though, that I'm not a fan of the alpinist. I mean, I get the attraction of keeping or resurrecting old styles -- love the recraft series, for example -- but if they're going this way, why not give us the Pogue with an updated movement? Why this thing?
While I think it is fantastic (and very much appreciated from my point of view) that people loan out watches to reviewers it did make me wonder whether doing so increases resale value? I know these are done by fans of the channel and for our benefit. Again this is NOT criticism merely curiosity. Fantastic looking and nice wearing watch btw. I prefer the blue to the black cream or green ... maybe a boring preference but hey I like what I like. I like the small red splashes on the blue and the silver hands and numerals and in my opinion the markers around the dial stand out just right.
“I am neither a Japanese, nor a mountaineer” lmao Jody!

You put the Sun to the direction of the Hour hand. South is right in the Middle between 12 a clock and the hour hand.
Old Boy Scout knowledge - seems not many left who can remember it....
In the North point the hour hand at the Sun. In the South point 12 o'clock at the Sun.
Jody just needs to do a hand stand and the northern hemisphere compass directions still apply.

I like the inky blue dials but do not care for the mid-blue look. It can make the difference between a purchase or not so surely it is worth them trying to get it right?
Weird had a JOMW commercial before watching JOMW. Double dipping!!
Mate! Can you please tell me what it was for? Thanks!
Just One More Watch it was you in a pre-video ad before your video started. Sorry skipped it so don’ t remember what the watch brand was, but you cannot mistake the Aussie voice!
Like the new seiko 5 compared to the skx, and the pre-x sumo, I like the lastest/recently discontinued versions SO much more...
In the pictures the dial looks like a Matt Blue as opposed to a sun burst blue.
*matte :)
@@gerritsevereid4657 Either/or.👍
Looks a lot nicer than the green one...
I loved the green an gold. Ended up getting a green and rose gold Undone Basecamp instead as the SARB017 is still too much $$ for me. Or at least more than I'm willing to spend right now on one watch (3 incoming)
Gorgeous, I love the blue!
You are the best youtuber🤩
Wait.. I had your review of that bonkers carbon watch as an ad before this video! Meta.
the sarb 17 didnt have a white background date
Thanks Jodie, another great review. Lovely looking watch!
PS: I thought TGV was the only one allowed to say "eKcetra" :))
I loved how Seiko designed this one so the date wheel is permanently on "3" to preserve the symmetry of the time.
Why this thing?
can you do review Orient President?
While I think it is fantastic (and very much appreciated from my point of view) that people loan out watches to reviewers it did make me wonder whether doing so increases resale value? I know these are done by fans of the channel and for our benefit. Again this is NOT criticism merely curiosity. Fantastic looking and nice wearing watch btw. I prefer the blue to the black cream or green ... maybe a boring preference but hey I like what I like. I like the small red splashes on the blue and the silver hands and numerals and in my opinion the markers around the dial stand out just right.
Love that shirt!
What a lovely specimen.
017 Urinates all over this from a great height for me , also afaik the dials are stamped / pressed and none of the numeric or indices are applied.
Beautiful Seiko!
Simple Seiko beauty!
Great review great watch
if that off white alpinist is full lume dial im all for it!!!!!
Ooooooooo! That would be good mate!
