the green dial alpinist is one of the better seikos and for many years. there was also a cream colored dial released at the same time but it was discontinued
Just got a Seiko auto watch for $200. Interesting that it has a triangle for 12 o'clock, and stripes for the rest. But this watch is like you said, old timie... I love it, $600 ain't so bad...
Really glad I was able to snag a green Alpinist when Amazon dropped the price for a few hours. Fantastic watch at $350. Is it wrong to have a Timex/Redwing strap on it? A divers bezel works better as a compass- actually stays in position.
Nick, a perfect review. Especially when you critique the limited edition side of things. If I may suggest, please try an Explorer, it'll be a revelation for you.
I’d like to venture a new name for it The Hodinkee FOMO I would like to ask Seiko to release a grey or black dial to apologise to all the people left irritated or disappointed by this watch.
I think this is the first time Nick has not listed "Seiko's accuracy warranty" as an ugly thing for a Seiko product. Mind you, I have the green SARB 017, and I agree with most of Nick's points as they apply to the earlier version. I do like the novelty of the compass bezel, and the semi-sunburst of the dial under certain light conditions. I *will* say that the black strap is an improvement over the fake croc strap that Seiko had included with the SARB, and this is one of those watches that I will take hiking during the day and bar-hopping during the night.
So, I have the SARB017. It was my first mechanical. Is it a good watch? Sure...I suppose. It runs about -20 sec a day, which is within spec. Could it be better? Of course. I could have it regulated, but it's running fine. Is it the best thing since the discovery of the atom? Not really. It's very pretty, and yes, I love the green dial. That said, $600 for a blue dial, when I got my green dial for $325 is utterly ridiculous. Seiko has been trying to place their 6R15 movements in an upper echelon when really, it's just an upgraded 7S26 with a Spron mainspring. It's not a great movement at all, and forcing people into the $600+ range to get one in their watch is absurd.
This watch upsets me more than just about any watch released in recent history. A lot of people have been asking and waiting for an Alpinist in something other than that obnoxious green dial, and this is what happens. It's a damn monkey's paw wish come true. Such a simple request should not be this cursed.
I love how youtube audience adopts the wording of the video narrators in their comments. First I noticed it @AvE's channel, because that's easy to spot, but it's evident through out most of the channels I watch. Ok, I get it, that's how it works to fit into a peer group, but common, it's the interwebs, nobody cares who you are trying to be, so you mights as well use your own words...
2500$ 😂😂😂😂 you can pick up a second hand Tudor Black Bay Heritage 2012 Basel World release for that price if you look around a bit.... I think it already ridiculous at 600$ but when people ask from 800 - 2500$ just because it's a Limited edition blue dial Alpinist, they aren't in this game for the love of watches, only to speculate and make a quick buck off of a random jackass who isn't that into watches and their true value.
I really feel you were biased towards this watch Nick. I know you have a bad opinion on limited editions, but 0-4 seconds and you're complaining ?! and on another one, you said it was good accuracy at 2-7 sec!! I do agree with most of your points and they are your opinion, but I am sure you are a fair man and you havent been so to this one.
I feel like people just use capitalism as an excuse to be a dick .shame it really is .as for the watch i so wanted it to be stunning and it really seems lackluster what a shame but hay hodinky effect right it was bound to be a screw up
That’ might be your most nick picky review ever Nick. I know you’re not a watch guy, but to bitch about the accuracy of an automatic at this price point is ridiculous, buy a freaking quartz if you want better for under a thousand. I’m really tired of you slamming Seiko for features that aren’t applicable at the price point of the watch inq
In question. This particular watch is worth 450-600, review it at that level, it’s a great watch, the compass bezel is not a gimmick, it’s a cool feature. I do not own this watch, but get your head out of your ass and stop being so ridiculously petty.
The Alpinist just doesn’t do it for me......even though I love Seiko watches.Guess you cant please everyone .....every time. That squished Mercedes just kills it for me😞

I love my original green SARB017. One of my fave watches, i've had it since 2016 and I think it'll stay with me forever.
Why didn’t you use the Spyderco Delica for size comparison?

The green Alpinist looks great on the two tone Jubilee....
holy crap. I heard the term ¨sun burst ¨ for the longest time. Now I know what it means. Thanks Nick!
11:10 The indices look rounded off because they are stamped from behind the dial. They aren’t applied indices.

Beautiful. But I'm to much of a penny pincher to buy into limited release and secondary market action.
I’d like to venture a new name for it
The Hodinkee FOMO

I have a very attractive Recraft I like, but yeah, my least favourite feature is the super reflective cheap looking crystal.
TheMasonator777 thx mr put down , so i’ll take my blue Alpinist under the car , run it over , and than walk right into a truck
I have to say the green looks way better. :)

Iam looking a waTch Alpinist SPB089...please fair price
Not a fan of this watch but, for the record, the "compass" function can be used as a timer, much like a diver bezel, 5 minutes for each 30 degrees.
Wow really amazing watch review!!! :D
Does Nick have a review of the sarb033?
You can get the Seiko bracelet from Seija.

Hey... hey... is that for s- *batarang to back of head* *face slams into keyboard*
The Alpinist was always a $200 watch in $400 fancy sheep's clothing.
Wasn't this posted earlier? Maybe I'm confusing it with the first impressions vid?
He had a "one minute" video on this watch earlier
@@thomash4578 I swear there was another.

Pretty looking watch.
Too bad Seiko forgot about AR
Secondary market is crazy and I feel sorry people paid that price when more are coming out
If I only could find numer #60/1959 of this watch, I'd buy them.

capitalism, comrade. vote with your wallet.
Beautiful watch...unfortunate it wasn't a general release. Blue Alpinists would sell like hot cakes for years to come.
Pretentious watch blog hahahaha. Oh god that got me laughing.
Nice review !
i think its a little boring compared to the green alpinist.
Still prefer the Original Green :)
Accumulating Seikos isn’t a hobby, it’s an addiction. Want proof? People paying over a grand for a watch a 6R15 movement. You have been warned, folks.
Oh I'm quite thankful I'm only into knives-- They're the only piece of daily gear that hasn't been replaced by technology.
Yep. F**k limited editions. Just a slimy way of capitalizing on social media fomo.
I bet the Hodinkee mafia are sending a team to blade show to eliminate Nick as I type this.

I’m thinking you might be new here, but being demanding and ridiculously petty is sort of what I do. 🤣
Nick Shabazz I’m not new here, I just thought you were being overly harsh.
