I cannot thank you enough, I've been trying to find information on how to bonsai larger trees (I have a 7ft oak and 6ft acer), but not knowing where to start, and scared of killing them. You are a wonderful tutor, concise, understandable, informative, and enjoyable. Thankyou!
Same! I came trying to find out how to train some a.j. coral bark we let grow from seedlings in our garden (from the full-grown mama) and I didn't know what to do to rein in but also kind of honor the crazy growth patterns they'd gotten themselves into. Thank you!
Ich bin so begeistert. Ein grosser Meister seines Faches Immer gut gelaunt und tiefenentspannt, passend zu dieser Arbeit🤗🤗 eine grosse Bereicherung auch für Anfänger. Vielen Dank🙏
"...but there are no hard and fast rules to doing it"... Thank you Peter. And may God continue to bless you and your family. And of course your awesome videos on bonsai and life.
Thank you very much for all of your videos. I have been learning about Bonsai Maple trees and other trees from these videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
I absolutely love watching you teach! Especially about Japanese Maples! Your such an inspiration and give the courage for me to achieve things I don’t think I would otherwise have achieved! Thank you
Thank you so much for this video. You've just saved the little mapel I bought. As a complete novice I was going to start chopping branches and cutting roots to fit it into a bonsai pot. I've now put it into a bigger pot to let it get strong and hopefully a nice thick trunk. Looking forward to watching your other videos.
Thank you.... 🙏 😔 🙏 Dr. Chan, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It is now one of my references videos. The video has so much tequnique in it, you show how you make decisions, there is so much here that you could not tell someone. They just have to watch you, as you "Cut Boldly®". 🎄🙏 🖖 🙏 😔 🙏 🙏 🙏 🎄
Interesting insight into your method for growing maples for bonsai. Also very good point about allowing for die back and compartmentalisation of cut wounds.
I am new to bonsai and making them but so far your video's have helped me a lot and in time I hope to be a good scolpsher of bonsai trees thank you so much for taking time to make video's
Wish I had Peter's 'eye' for what the finished tree will look like and also another life so I could come back and work with him! Excellent presentation as usual.
I loved that last multi trunk. I think I'm being drawn back into working on my trees. I've had my tools and books packed away in boxes about 3 years now. I planted my trees and what survived are looking good. Even wired a Japanese black pine for movement. Ya, I think it's in my blood. Thank you
Thanks for this video. I got a maple seedling from my neighbors about 35 cm height. It has a bare trunk for the bottom 30 cm. I am not sure what to do ... I think that it is too tall so I might just have to chop it shorter and see if some side branches will grow. So easy to watch you doing all the cuttings ... :)
my goodness I just stumbled on to this site.. FANTASTIC! I have always been interested in bonsai trees but was always busy with life.. But the kids are grow now the working is over and I have all the time in the world until I end.. you set the spark back a light in me my friend.. and I have a japanese maple in my front yard!... one question though.. don't the trees freeze in the pots over the winter? We do not have a bad winter here in vancouver washington very often.. But once and awhile it can be.. I guess my wife gets her green house this year!
Hello tinkmarshino, it's a good questions please check out our video on Overwintering Bonsai ua-cam.com/video/x8JwO1n9-hg/v-deo.html - if you haven't already please do subscribe to our channel.
This is very interesting, can you start telling us how old each tree is in the future? One of my guys is about the same trunk size and it’s about 9 years old, they grow very very slow but I like that about them. Thank you so much Sir. I wish I could visit your 7 acres someday I will get there from California ❤️
I just did my first Acer "Kiyohime" it was $45 so a little scary but I did remove a lot of stuff, it was just a bush, had many broken branches, looks beautiful now as an informal upright. I may buy one of the expensive 6' tall trees and air layer it to get a thicker trunk, it would be nice to hear how old each tree might be when you are talking about them, gives an idea how many years of training it has had. Great video as they all are.
Good evening sir. I just subscribed to your channel. So much for me to watch here. This year I would like to start a couple of outdoor bonsai. I am thinking of a Japanese red maple and a pyracanthia. Do you have any videos of the Japanese red maple? I am going to have many educational and enjoyable hours watching your videos.
every video you make is very nice to see !!! we are learning a lot with you !!! I will have a question on the soil, what substrate do you use to grow maples in containers, and what proportion please ???
I think I'm going to give it a go ..... so inspiring .... and you can be so brutal .... I would have expected the poor thing to die with such severe cutting ... gives me hope that I can do this too.
I’ve been trying to be a bonsai grower for years now and I sometimes get good and sometimes I don’t...I just love bonsais and I have seven that I’ve dug up in the forest.. I have a couple still in the forest that I’ve been training now for 8 years and I’ll dig them up this fall and bring them home,,,
i have grow osakazuki from seed they are 2 feet tall, can i cut the growing point so my tree grows new side shoots many thanks you have lots of lovely mapels you are a master of the mapel tree
I have a 6.5 ft. Japanese maple I bought a week ago. My plan was to do exactly what you were demonstrating in this video. My question is, when can I cut it back and if I was to try and air layer the top to keep it as another tree, when should that be done? Thank you for your videos. Yours are definitely the ones I look forward to watching. Amazing job sir.
Wow, wee, this is a fantastic tutorial, so informative. I absolutely love my Japanese Maples but am often scared to make cuts in fear of them dying or something. Would love to know if there are specific Maples or Acers that suit being a bonsai better than others? Are there some that you could not do this too at all? Thank you so much for going to such effort of making this video 🧡🧡. Greetings from Ireland
IT WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE ONE THAT HAS GROWN UP AFTER ONE OF THESE PRUNINGS, SAY FROM 10 YRS AGO TO THIS POINT IN TIME, JUST SO WE CAN GET AN IDEA OF WHAT SHAPE WE ARRIVE AT, LESS WE CUT IT WRONG, THANKS A VERY HELPFULL VIDEO 10 OUT OF 10
Hello...i really like your way of bonsai making...i love maples .... i would like to grow maples here in India.... please explain the right way to grow maples in New Delhi in India.... thanks
Hallo Mr. Chan, thanks a lot for another interesting and inspiering video. How old are the maples, when you get them on your bench, to take first real decision in wich direction you will develop the tree ? Best wishes and greetings from Germany.
I've watched a few your videos now and I can't help but notice how healthy your Maples are particularly because how small the pots are that you grow them in... can you please tell me the best fertilizer to use for Bloodgood Maples ??
When they grow in the field and transplanted into flower pots - we use either plain garden soil ie mud - or a mixture of bark and mud. Nothing sophisticated.
Just before early Spring is best. We do ours from mid Jan to March. but it is also OK to cut in Summer as the cuts heal very quickly. Autumn is not a good time from my experience.
peter i have to ask, do you have any deer around the nursery? the scar the second tree has is something i would associate with a rub from a deer's horns.
I just love watching and learning. I'm new to bonsai and I feel like I learn something from every video. Thank you.

I love these hands-on illustrations on how to prune and analyze for future growths. Soo very helpful and informative. Thank you for these videos!

If you get the opportunity, Definitely worth a visit, I've always wanted to collect a natural seedling from under the beautiful deshojo he's got.
The amount of inventory that you have is staggering!!!
Does it matter what time of year you make your cuts? Never mind - you answered the question at 9:16

You really can be patient, when you have so much trees to work on. Good video!
Look at his trees, that's how you know it's solid advice!
As usual, most nicely done, thank you. If you would please explain what you are using to seal the cuts ?
I think I'm going to give it a go ..... so inspiring .... and you can be so brutal .... I would have expected the poor thing to die with such severe cutting ... gives me hope that I can do this too.
I always enjoy the videos.
Amazing as always.
One of my Maple look like one of them that you made. I thought I did it wrong. ☺☺☺

This is serious bonsai! I love it!
Excelent video!
I always enjoy your videos. Very helpful.
Your videos are always fascinating. What time of year do you do this pruning
Wonderful!! Why do we have to choose one leader? Why not have several leaders? Is this a choice of how tall you want it in the end?
Thank you for sharing.

I really enjoyd this one
Very nice
When you say feed. What do you recommend? What has worked best for you?

Do you recommend ever using bonsai cutting paste for significant cuts? What is the purpose of cutting paste? Thanks
The maple trees in this video are mostly about 15 years old from seed
Very nice Videos... helping a lot. I wished i had more space than my balkony....
Thanks a lot for the video
Your videos are the best
I really like this bonsai cutter! Where can I get it? ... Gret Video by the way!
In our area I found Cranberry Hibiscus, which was sold there with the name tag of Maple.
I've watched a few your videos now and I can't help but notice how healthy your Maples are particularly because how small the pots are that you grow them in... can you please tell me the best fertilizer to use for Bloodgood Maples ??
Biogold or prodigy plus (prodigy is more affordable but stinks)
YOU CUT THAT TREE STEVE!!!
thank you and many greetings from Germany.
When is the best time to make these cuts? I reside in New York we are in Winter here.
Thanks
Hi Peter, Do you use regular garden soil for the grow out phase ? I didn't spot any aeration type of soil in the potted maples. Thanks, Des
When they grow in the field and transplanted into flower pots - we use either plain garden soil ie mud - or a mixture of bark and mud. Nothing sophisticated.
Preciosos arces. un saludo desde España
Good video, good tips. Now i can take a decision with my Mapple. One question....when is the best period for this kind of cuts?
Just before early Spring is best. We do ours from mid Jan to March. but it is also OK to cut in Summer as the cuts heal very quickly. Autumn is not a good time from my experience.
What do you feed them, and how often?
I think im falling in love with maple's
peter i have to ask, do you have any deer around the nursery? the scar the second tree has is something i would associate with a rub from a deer's horns.
Yes we do have deer
Very interesting
