Thank you for doing this video & sharing. It explained to me why my Smart mechanic said the clutch is on the way out on my Smart4two and the repair will cost a minimum £1K.
Superb video, well narrated. So good to see a video compiled by someone with a working brain and a voice I can clearly understand. Shame you are on the other side of the country. All the best. My reason for watching your vid was, I was THINKING about buying a used Smart car - watching your vid was immensely helpful. Thank you
@@nigelswann2873 Well its 3yrs newer than the black one, has AC, is free tax (black one is £30 a year) and now has a lot more new parts than the black one....
Many thanks , very helpful. I have to remove clutch on an 03 but mostly the same procedure? Knocking noise on tick over sounds like pressure plate has come loose. Thanks again
My smarts gearbox (I think) is making a noise. I’m gonna use this video to put a new gearbox and clutch in - wish me luck 😅 thank you for this video 👍🏻
Thx for a good video..very helpfull...my smart roadster refuse to start.. fresh battery and immobilizer deactivated.. turn key still nothing... any idea where to start looking
my clutch is bald, i can feel it slipping so bad, i need to do this to my little bug asap, how long do you think this job takes, can you do a timing chain while the engine is on the car, whats your thought on ebay parts, mine just crossed the 190,000 miles on the road i am hopping to keep it alive much longer, i love this thing so much i don't know what i would do with out it 🥲
Good video bud, recently done an engine overhaul and clutch, can't start the car though and the clutch isn't disengaged even though the car says its in neutral...stater just slams into flywheel and nothing happens...any ideas?
@@DrizzDevelopments yeah, OG clutch bench tested fine but thought it may still have an issue so tried an ebay starter and that works too, I've got a feeling the clutch is not disengageing from the pressure plate even when the car says its in neutral
Thanks a lot for the insights! Although I definitely don’t have a clue, how someone who is capable of dismantling the whole car does not check penny goods like a dust cover prior MOT.. 😂
Clutch replacement. I would definitely test actuator first. After watching your video ofcourse. I was just doing research on the Smart car. I'm thankful to have UA-cam and all you content creators.
@@randyrobison335 Ok. Im. bit confused? Mine was the clutch itself? Or are you saying before going for a clutch change on yours, you would check the actuator first?
I just bought a 2013 Smart Passion Cabriolet. It has the automatic transmission with the paddle shifter on the steering wheel. My trans is making a rattle noise. Does mine have a clutch also?
First things first, do your brake lights work? If they don’t illuminate when you have the ignition on and press the pedal, change the brake pedal switch first. If they work then it depends on the model you have. If MHD then the starter is built into the alternator and you need to drop the subframe to lower the engine enough to be able to change it but they’re not cheap. If it’s non MHD then it’s bolted to the gearbox like any other car
Great video , thank you. Please could you tell me the socket o need for the axle bolts? I only have up to E24 and this is too small. Are they torx or something else? Many thanks
Someone help me, the car starts fine with no dashboard lights, it goes into R and N and gear 1 but the car won’t move when peddle is pressed? It’s as if it’s still in neutral and just revs
Used my 451 to tow my brother's stuck Berlingo van, I know I know. Seriously overheated and smoked the smart clutch and now after two weeks the burnt smell is still there. Any ideas?
@@DrizzDevelopments i think a lot of smart mechanics just say outreagus amounts for any work on smart - cause its a smart car and everything is hard on it ;) I understand air condenser is a lot of work (not hard maybe but time consuming) while clutch change looks really quite easy even for novice. Also it seems a lot of things is easier to do than on olderr models (450 i mean).
Thank you for doing this video & sharing. It explained to me why my Smart mechanic said the clutch is on the way out on my Smart4two and the repair will cost a minimum £1K.

Thank you for posting this video it is very helpful. You didn’t waste your time because the clutch was broken. Great little cars keep them alive 🤓
What an amazing video I was engaged all the way to the end. Glad you were able to find the issue and get it up and running !
Thanks mate. Appreciate the comment :)
Great detailed stripdown, that pressure plate was well shot, made a nice little car in the end.
Its really nice TBH, Especially the free tax 😂
Is this one better than your old daily?

No problem at all
On a 450 the "spider" frame that attaches the flywheel to the crank can break which causes a bad rattling.

Check to see if you have brakelights. Faulty brake light switch is a known cause

Takes a morning. No idea on the timing. Not done one yet im afraid. Id go with the OE Sachs clutch every time. Was very reasonably priced.
Good video bud, recently done an engine overhaul and clutch, can't start the car though and the clutch isn't disengaged even though the car says its in neutral...stater just slams into flywheel and nothing happens...any ideas?
No not really. Have you tried another Starter? Obviously this one was MHD so used the Alternator as a starter

Thank you very much :)
was that a government inspection? ours aren't nearly as in depth here in Texas!
Yes at the end of the video thats our annual MOT test
Does the replacement gearbox need to be coded to the car?
No. They’re not that ‘smart’ 😅

This a diesel one?
Nope, MHD Petrol

I did indeed yes

If its a 451 (this shape) then definitely it will have a clutch. If its the next shape along then i dont know as not had one in yet
for 451 80k-120k on clutch is unfortunately max it will do. 60k if you dont bother to adapt gearbox at least every 15k.
I’m never against reusing any serviceable parts because as you say it’s all about recycling 👍🏻🏴
In this day and age it certainly is!
I draw the line at used brake pads, they are so cheap new and it takes forever for used pads to bed in to different (used) discs.
Hallo, i want ask i have smart Fortwo same like the video, my car cannot start , i want ask where is the starting motor located?

Probably full of worn clutch material from the tow and as it warms up it smells
