I saw a Smart car camper around 10 years ago.. it had a full-length bed for sleeping on the passenger side, and a full kitchen out the back hatch, it was for sale for like $3,500 at the time in Los Angeles.
Citroen had 3 bolt wheels a long time ago, probably before you were born. Those wheels were one of their get-your-attention trademarks. Plus, those Citroens did NOT have a jack to change tires. You raised the air suspension all the way, inserted a simple metal rod in a socket by the tire, and lowered the air suspension, which raised the 3 bolt wheel off the ground.
There's an American woman who's converted her Smart Car to a camper, and she has a bed where the passenger seat was located that extends to the tailgate. This allows her full length sleeping inside her car, I saw it featured on the Cheap RV Living UA-cam channel.
I'm in line (queue?) for an eventual Aptera... however, if that doesn't play out I've decided I need this! Great ideas are always someone else's, thank you Max!
I had a smart car a few years ago and it was great and even more practical than I expected. The only down side was finding anyone to actually work on it which was a shame. I ended up selling it as a none runner.
As a veteran Smart owner that loves the brand ……. You sir are…… a Bloody magician! I love the look the engineering and the video .. sub from me and I’m now wondering how I can convince the wife we need one. I tip my cap to you sir! ❤
A mechanic friend of mine helped me get a drill bit adapter for my torque wrench. I can loosen the tire bolts with the torque wrench and then use a drill to finish the job. Also...glad I'm not the only one that uses my drill in short ZRRRT ZRRRT ZRRRT ZRRRT spurts.
Correction. It is not the first with plastic panels. Saturn did that in the late 90s and early 2000s. All plastic bodywork except the hood, roof and trunk.
That’s really cool, but you might ought to look into the CLC teardrop camper kits from Chesapeake Light Craft. You can actually tow one with a smart car
you forgot the fifth gear crash test, 70 mph head on at a concrete wall. and i thought it would just fall to bits, in fact it did far better than all the other cars they tested.
@@SilverlineToolsTV Yes I have seen the built...but this little car is more brilliant! We have quite a number of this car but it is not popular may due to its size
Looks cool but I wouldn't want to take a corner at speed with that weight on top. Maybe I'm thinking cautiously but I nearly flipped a Land Rover Defender with 40 litres of diesel in two Jerry cans on the roof rack with a truck coming in the opposite direction and top heavy vehicles are off the menu for me.
I love the project. But I’ve got a feeling that wheels standing proud of the body line is a regulatory no no, and getting road legal insurance for this would be tricky…
@@max_mcmurdo Thank you. I wish I understand more about lifting my 451. I'm confused about you keep the axel straight after lifting, do you need a steering extension,. Anyhow, I love it and want to do it on mine
Well, I'm a bit disappointed at that build....the off-road look will hardly let you get off the road, the roof rack has definitely changed the conduct on the road that you be really careful when steering even at 35km/h.... I'd definitely stick to build a tiny camper to tow, since no off-road is for the Smart even with the off-road look... For that you'd like Suzuki Jimny...
I love how chaotic and "unofficial" this is🤣. Not to mention the fact that you actually checked all the main boxes for accessories/off-road builds and needs! I also love how it's all a miniature version too lol
OK, credit goes where it is deserved. Very well put together video, the editing is great quality and Max and the fabricator do an amazing job. I was surprised it was produced from a tool company! Props for great content, commenting to help the algorithm along!

Great idea! And probably a lot less work then building an external roll cage
I turned my bicycle into a camper by carrying a tent with me
Love a bit of bike-packing!
Thats "exo-skeleton"-rollcage was a brilliant idea to mount the roof tent
Thanks, looks great as well
You’re not left with much storage in the car so how about a small off road looking trailer or even a teardrop caravan.
Great idea!
Smart cars are not homologated for towing though.
@@johnleaver1868 where there’s a will there’s a way, I’m sure he’ll figure it out 😉
I think keeping it as minimal as possible is better.
He'd be better of getting a larger car then, i think this is pretty neat
Is it silly? Is it awesome? Can't it be both? Love it! Now I want one for my car. It could haul my kayak!
Right on both counts!
this is one of the best custom builds ive ever seen!!!!
Have you seen the Beetle Pick Up yet?
no????@@SilverlineToolsTV
Thank you 🙏🏼
This is amazing! I would love to experience this myself, if only I had the skill and welding buddy like you
We all need a welding buddy! Why not start small and build up to something like this. We're sure you're more than capable 👍
Love it. But needs a side-hinged bracket door at the back like a jeep that has a bolted-on spare wheel and jerry can.
Nice touch!
The cage is cool however the front lid can no longer be removed due to cage design.
You can remove it, it's just far more difficult that it used to be 👀

I have a 451 just for advertising, love these cars .... But this one is just on another level! ...Seriously impressive job!
Not tempted to keep it and add a roof tent and waffle boards?
Cheers mate 💪🏼

It's a "Scamper" 👨🏻🔧

you created a power-wheels camper the kids can use out in the yard! awesome

Gutting! Would you get another after seeing this?
Those stick on reg plates are illegal to use on roads
How cool is this?! Looks like a moonrover!
Next big adventure 🌕
Creative use of space.
Thanks!
this is now my dream car
Pretty snazzy
Best built i ever saw.
Best wishes and always a good voyage from Germany 👍👏👏👏

Wish this car was still available in the USA. Miles are climbing on the two I have. Always checking adds for the EV ones used.
not the only one with 3 wheel bolts, citroen had it, my fabulous ax had it and it was an amazing
fun car
Had a few sent over now, lesson learnt! Never claim anything is "the only one"

Brilliant video. I'd happily spend a weekend away in that. Liked and commented to help the algorithm.
Amazing! thanks for the support 😍
60 miles per gallon? I think not but still worth a watch.
7:24 is my laugh when I happy in my own world.
The Indian Nano car only has 3 wheel nuts too😊
Good to know, thanks!
I’m not going to lie I was about talk some 💩 but you proof me wrong. 😂 I will take that fishing every weekend will fit anywhere 👍 cool build
Front steering geometry offset is massive
Only problem is that for some reason the steering wheel is on the wrong side.. how did that happened?
you forgot the fifth gear crash test, 70 mph head on at a concrete wall. and i thought it would just fall to bits, in fact it did far better than all the other cars they tested.
Not sure it's getting anywhere near 70 these days, but that roll cage is surely only going to help
6:40 Some Peugeot 106 and Citroen Saxos had 3 stud patterns on their wheel hubs too.
Such a fun little car and idea
Thanks, definitely ready for a few adventures now 🏔
Incredible!
Thanks!

Awesome!!!!!! love it and what a brilliant feat of engineering ! where do yuou source all the 'bits' like wheel spacers and wheels etc????
More on the way from Max very soon! We'll also ask him where he got the parts from

Nice...😁👍
Optional tow bar transport rack (Box) 🤔
Good call!
Maybe a small ATV front box would fit on the front roll cage too.
2. Video: lighted baja pole flags...😂
I want to see you doing a curve without overturning lol.
Great job anyways.
I'd like to be there when he actually uses that winch and it's the car that moves.
Looks great. Top work Max 🔥🔥🔥

With the lift kit and all the weight up top, I'd be interested to see how stable it is.
Straight lines only
Loved it

How slow is it? That said it looks amazing
It ain't fast, that's for sure! 🏎
Love the ride but where did you get the lift kit and spacers also what size tyres and wheels please ps wicked job

Great little car, better with a roll cage and roof tent though!
Do it they are awesome!
Use loctite for those adapters
Thanks for the advice!

Throw a lock and diff in there and you got yourself a little rig

Thanks to the wider track it’s great 👍🏼
Did a pretty good job in the Van tour video, you should check that out
that is so cute
Thanks!
Would’ve been cool to see a hatch into the tent from the bottom so you could grab something out of your car without technically going outside
Max was tempted
But where do you put your camping backpack?
welcome to India we well come you
Thanks
Bet it doesn’t get 60MPG anymore. But fun looking. Better crash survival probably too.
Not sure it ever did
I doubdt that it is legal to drive it on the public road with those protruding front tires.
Protruding tyres not part of the MOT! 🙌🏼
could be a mars rover👍
I totally see it!
Up to 33 city / 39 highway MPG not 60. The Toyota Yaris beats it, costs less, more room and better gas mileage.
Doesn’t look as cool though! 🤙🏼
I want one
We'll ask Max if he's willing to part with it
Oh, I thought it was a camper VAN build video.
The van build is when I converted an ambulance a few videos ago 🤙🏼
how does it handle now?
Lets just say It won't be setting any nürburgring records anytime soon 🏎
