Delving Deeper Into Front Body Structure & Fixing Alignment Issues - 2008 Smart Fortwo Pure 451

  • In this video I clean and dismantle the front body panels on my 2008 Smart Fortwo 451 Pure and replace the o/s/f right front wing / fender which had sustained body damage and been poorly repaired with filler. I examine the vehicle's structure beneath and discover that a collapsible crash / impact cone had partially collapsed. This had not been replaced / rectified and instead a headlamp had been mounted with washers to bring it forward to compensate for the misalignment.
I sourced a replacement component from eBay and partially removed the front panel / slam panel in order to swap this over.
I thoroughly clean and jet wash the front of the vehicle and the sills, usually covered by the side skirts / sill trims - these were also cleaned with the Karcher.
The Front of the vehicle is reassembled and alignment is now correct.

    Very helpful video.
As a recent Smart owner with many needs of repair, I am viewing your whole catalog of videos and of course each new one as it posts.
The front clip removal was quite enlightening and allowed me to see so much of the front section.
I live in Hawaii, but up in the high desert of the volcano 4,600ft/1,400m elevation.
My morning temps are around 39F/4C and warm up to a balmy 58F/14C. My neighbors just up the hill get ice on their pet water dishes in the early morning.
The weather up here is actually quite similar to Uk. I have a British neighbor who says it's just like home.
The mornings are brisk and clear and usually by 9 or 10 the clouds begin to form and any time after that we can literally get surrounded by the clouds. Basically the same as the London fog, coming and going until the temperatures and dew point get far enough apart for clear night skies, which are amazing for planet, star, and meteor shower watching.
    Thanks for the video.🤙

Steven you are such a good teacher. You take your time and explain everything very thoroughly. I share your love of Smart Fortwos. I have 2 and am constantly adding bit's, bobs and gadgets. I am a retired auto mechanic but I still learn much from your videos. I could sit and listen to you read the phone book ! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and for working in damp freezing temperatures so that we can sit in our warm houses and enjoy your videos and learn ! You are the best !

Very nice job, I stripped mine to the same extent just to replace the washer motor!
The lower fastening on the wing were as brittle as crisps too. I had to use fat plastic rawl plugs in the tridian temporarily. Enjoyed that thanks. 👍

Hello Stephen, first of all I wish you a happy new year and hope to see many more interesting videos from you!
You're not letting the cool temperatures or the British weather stop you from your plans, and even the battery in your camera doesn't feel like working 😉
Enjoy the new year and your hopefully warm home. 🙋🏻‍♂️

If you look carefully near the middle of the screen windscreen, you'll see there are marks that show where the wiper blades should be when at rest.
A light smear of grease on the sidelight bulb holder stems helps removal in the future.
I see you topped up with MB325.0 . That'd concentrated antifreeze so if you hadn't already premixed it with 50% water, that will lower your boiling point. Obviously not by much as it was only a top up.

@@evilution_ltd Thank you for this. I’ll be in for a full coolant change at some point as I’m figuring it may be the original. Great tip on the sidelight bulb holder. I have some red rubber grease that could be just the job there. They’ve always been a cow to remove but after the knuckle stripping job on my previous 450 cars I don’t complain 🤣

Good to see you back Stephen, I always enjoy your vids. I'm too old and inflexible to attempt such things, and don't have a garage, so have to go from S Wales to either Giles or Ben for such work, but I love watching how it all comes apart. I appreciate your little extraneous explanations such as the heater input, sidelight bulbs etc. Keep up the excellent work.

Can you get a camera with loud alarm that goes off if battery low or about to fail? Would have liked to have seen how dirty your drain area was too. Is there a certain porduct you need to foam clean the front area, I was woried for electrics, so do you just wait to dry or spray something on after cleaning?

    Great job 👏🏻
‏I wanna ask you about some problems on my 451 ا hope you see my comment
‏I have 71ps smart and i wanna make it 84ps (could I add an orginal turbo on it? And how?)
‏I have smart 450 brabus steering wheel with “paddle shifter”
‏(Could I add the paddles on my smart 451 steering wheel?)
‏ I asked someone and he tell me that it can’t fits on my 451 steering wheel 🤷🏻‍♂️
    Another question
My 451 suddenly stop the engine when it goes on low speed and I can’t change the gears so i can’t start the engine again but when I remove the battery and connect it again i can restart the car (in rare cases)
    OBD shows me the faults
It says the clutch actuator failed
Could we fix it ? It’s so expensive to replace

    • @autoknight747
      @autoknight747  28 днів тому +1

@@Koki_HB Adding a turbo would be an involved process and it’s not just a case of bolting it on, there are many components you’d need and there’s the ECU and electrical side. It would be easier to buy an 84bhp model.
The 450 and 451 are different so you’d need one from a 451. I’ve never done it before but it would need the required coding at a Smart/MB dealer for it to operate.
It’s very hard to diagnose faults remotely and whilst the clutch actuator isn’t difficult to change for a technician , it’s important to be sure that is the actual fault. The presence or non-presence of a fault code is only one aspect of investigating faults and the car needs to be present to diagnose fully.
