- More than 8000 churches and mosques have been shut down in Rwanda this month for not meeting health and safety standards. Nearly half of the country's places of worship have been found to be in violation of several regulations. Its the first major crackdown since a law tightening up operations was brought in 5 years ago. FRANCE 24's correspondent in Kigali, Clement di Roma, reports.

imagine thousands in a small country like Rwanda
I've lived in Rwanda for three and a half years. I have never seen anything like this. It is devastating.
@@brittanyhoward9186 churches everywhere here in Colombia, MUCH MONEY INVOLVED
😂😂ur very sharp
Same in Jamaica, we have a Guinness record for the most churches per square mile. Pastors here do have degrees and have to be a part of an established group (example: Adventist, catholic, Jehovah witness, baptist, etc). However, the government definitely needs to check out the safety of these buildings and cult pastors who are on the rise recently.
Most churches in Africa have become a make it rich quick business...very sad
Like the Vatican
africa doing better than vatican..
That is every where. Ever met a poor preacher?
@@MarkousMajorSurf True. Same here in the states. Religion is a big money maker here in the states. Robbing poor people.
They're not permanently closed. Some are closed because they don't have fire extinguishers, a few toilets, unhiegeine or too small for the crowd they receive. If they correct those things, they will operate again.
I have a close friend from Rwanda he told me that a lot of those "churches" there are just scam markets. It's sad how they trick poor people into giving up a portion of their hard earned wages. A good move by the Kegame government in my opinion.
That's what a lot of people in the US say about churches. Sounds like sour grapes.
the christian churches ask 10 % of their wages and the priests who never work drive around in beautiful cars

Churches are business centers in Africa now. I agree with the Rwanda government. Stop criticizing this move. We need to make progress in Africa
Without education Christianity turns into evil lying.
Soon those lunatics from Amnesty International will show up and say that they are persecuting Christians there.
For media barons to make money and go for a trip to a non Churchy places with their girls.
Wonderful! Africa need more industries. Not churches!
The clip is about Rwanda and you just had to bring in the whole continent.

This is sad that places of worship were shut down. This shouldn’t be the case anymore, as they are needed to keep the faith in God alive.
The government of Rwanda respects the right to religion and the right to have a place of worship, as long as that place meet the standards. Churches have tolerate substandard, where you could find church premises receiving 1,000 people with one toilet for men and one toilet for women.
I understand the frustration of people whose churches have been temporally closed, but they have the effort to ensure they are meeting the standards.
Rwanda Government Board (RGB) has done everything in good faith.
it is a disguised move to secularism, do not be too naive
I wish they could be closed forever
It all depends on the standards in question:
Enforcing building codes is good !
Shutting down places that contravene noise pollution regulations is great ! !
But insisting that the leader of every religious gathering must have some sort of formal educational qualification is ridiculous, and goes against the very basic principles of religious freedom.

Smart move
My Rwanda will always surprise people
We need this in Kenya. I can count more than 10 churches within a half a kilometre radius both at my parents place and where I live. Some next or directly opposite each other and usually open at Fri night throughout the weekend in residential areas
If a mosque is in your residential area and they are blaring their microphone for call to prayer, I bet you won't complain because you know what they would do to you if you do.

Funga! Absolutely awesome leadership and courage. Too much nonsense disguised as freedom of worship. Other world leaders should follow suit. This will make the difference between true worship and madness.
How many shops have had this kind of inspection?

So called preaches preach to poor uneducated market women and threaten the with "gods word" so they give money to the preachers.

Very soon what is happening in UK will start in your Rwanda, refugees indeed
If sanitation is the real issue, they should also close all unhygienic facilities; schools, clinics etc
Its an excuse. They want to tax and share the money from the churches.
Thank you President Kagame
The one thing he took from his former colonisers, secularism
He's gonna fail
Oh no, he closed down churches that take money from poor people and refuse to meet the standards. Whatever shall we do?

Please forgive them, they do not know, what they are doing

Such stupidity so we need more scammers to keep on enrich themselves while their followers are starving c'mon you're better than that
Very difficult to understand from afar. Closing places of worship is like turning against freedom of speech, association & cultural activities. While the details are unclear & perhaps not identified, a major reason for such closings would be criminal, inhuman & suchlike practices. It is DANGEROUS for any people if such 'bans' are NOT justified before GOD.
😂😂😂
This is the beginning of kagame's downfall
Absolutely
@vre7474Christianity didn't
We must find human in very corner not division (like religions which have many division and small groups)
Man we need this in America
Rwandan from France here. I think it's the best thing that could have ever happened, given the context. Rwanda is still, overall, a poor and undereducated country. At one point, its population was significantly uplifted-intellectually, financially, and academically-by the powerful institutional influence of the Roman Catholic Church. Over the past 20-30 years, however, various homemade non-denominational Protestant churches, influenced by Americanized practices, have emerged in Kinyarwanda.
These churches are often led by self-declared miracle workers and pastors who can barely read and have never set foot inside a rigorous theological university program. In traditions like Catholicism, Lutheranism, Anglicanism, and Eastern or Ethiopian Orthodoxy, such training usually involves about 10-12 years of university-level theological education. Therefore, I'm glad to see the growing trend of Eastern Christian Orthodoxy, particularly the Patriarchate of Alexandria in Egypt, supporting the religious needs of converts across Rwanda with government backing. When it comes to Christianity, Orthodox Christianity is the real deal
This move is a way to protect people from exploitation, while the organized high churches-such as Roman Catholicism, the world’s largest denomination, and the theologically well-preserved Church of Holy Orthodoxy, whose patriarchate is in Alexandria, Egypt-are not affected. Smaller congregations, such as Lutheran and Anglican churches, also support the government’s vetting process. It's fascinating how, in such a short time, Rwandans have embraced non-denominational 'scripture alone, faith alone' mini-pastors, prophets, and prophetesses lol.
it is only you who is making sense here. you are very informed and realistic

Are you kidding me? The Only place people find hope and bad people can change for good. This is not a good move. If you remove religion you are also removing moral standards. I do belive its important for religious centers to follow the law of a country but this is a bad move from Rwanda and they will regret it.
I understand, but they didn't closed all religion rather they closed substandard churches. They are many churches which are working. Is it preferably to open church of more than 1000 participants with one toilet, or with no lightening conductor??
😂😂😂 Many (perhaps most) of the most immoral people are religious folks
@@e-reproductivehealthcaretv5473that would be realistic but some of the offices of those who are coming to close the churches also have less than enough restrooms. Bars? Most them don’t have these standards either. If this is something that applies to all public buildings it would be easily understood but if it only applies to church then you can’t blame people from feeling like there is an agenda against them really.
@@yasuke4593 standard is standard in Kigali...every other industry is complaint, and Kagame has been lenient for years with church on this topic due to the sensitivity of the matter. It was bound to happen.
Go tell that to the hundreds of people who got starved and burnt to death y their pastors both in Kenya and Uganda.
These stories are why its a good idea to investigate information from different sources. When i first heard of the closing of churches i thought it was religious freedom being interfered with, thank goodness i was wrong in my assumption. Later it was learned that many such churches didnit have the correct permits or trained cleregies, after being given appropriate time by the government to complied but failed they were closed.
The people who touch the church are going to be judged this Government has crossed the red line
Pleasee😂😂
Having a degree in theology as one of the requirements set by the government shows just how they don't understand how Christianity work. And the sentiments of the president saying that Rwanda doesn't need so many places of worship just shows again that he doesn't understand what God is doing in His church. Nations rage , but the King of kings sits enthroned and he laughs at such tyranny. He will build his church and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
I understand the health standards but the others requirements just make me think his motives are evil. He maybe just doesn't like the church and wants a pagan society like the West.

You must give importance to all the Lord's houses because it's a part of TOURISM infrastructure.
Tourism is hurting a lot of people who want only some nicer ones to come to the area and buy a lot from them..like rich elite ones..why would rich elite go to a Church when they have many shopping malls and restaurants and fun activities to do in bars etc?.I see no use of Churches anymore..they are only taking space when new structures like a playground or dance ground could be made for better people. I think most Churches will be swallowed by sinkholes...big sinkholes..and then new structures wil be built in their place...it will stop tourism too for a bit in those places like wherever famous churches are..I see that coming next.
I hope that Muslims in Rwanda are well and that they protect their rights by force of arms.🫡☪️
