Shooting In RAW With CHDK For Beginners

  • BigNate84.com - In this video I will explain the required settings in order to shoot in a RAW file format using CHDK. This is for people who believe pressing the shutter button is only the beginning of the photographic process. I will also show you a comparison between JPEG and unedited RAW pictures. RAW files are much larger and contain much more information compared to JPEG. Professional photographers like RAW files because they capture a picture in its purest form like a digital negative. Remember those little black rolls of film? They were called negatives. RAW pictures are like having the highest quality master or negative. But JPEG's take up less memory and your camera can process them faster. I don't shoot in RAW all the time but when I do I run CHDK on my Canon SX30is amzn.to/OWSNt2. Hope this helps.

    Thanks for following my tutorial. You can choose whether the RAW image is saved in the same directory as the JPEG or a new directory all together under the CHDK RAW parameters. You can also change the extension of the RAW image so that it is easier to distinguish from the JPEG. This can also be done under the RAW parameters CHDK menu.

    Yeah I think your right. CHDK won't knock your socks off when it comes to shooting video. But it does offer many great features pertaining more to photography.

    Spot on! I have put CHDK onto my little Ixus 70 and couldn't get RAW to work/be recognised in Photoshop... but thanks to this video... it is now working!

  • @BigNate84

    Pretty much yeah. You gain overrides that are previously not available. You'll be able to dial in your shutter speed, aperture settings and much more.

    That's a tough question to answer. It really depends on your camera since they each have different video specs. CHDK will most likely be able to increase the quality slightly. I personally use an SX30is and dont' need CHDK to get 720p video.

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  12 років тому

    Good question. I have no idea what drives Canons decision making. I could speculate that it has something to do with gearing consumer products to consumers and professional products to professionals. Most people looking for these extra features are trying to get the benefits of a professional camera without paying big bucks for one. It's probably more cost effective for the PowerShot brand to appeal to people who just want to point and shoot.

  • @BigNate84

    I pretty much found out about CHDK the same way you did. I bought the SX30is for the zoom and overall good reviews. The first week I got it I tried to figure out how to take time lapse and realized I need CHDK to do that. I've been using CHDK ever since. It's a great little hack.

  • @BigNate84

    Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. I'm always looking for ways to improve my videos too. I know shooting in RAW is a big draw for many people. I'm not really that enthusiastic about editing. For me the big draw was the ability to run time lapse scripts. There is also a lightening script for capturing those elusive bursts of light during thunder storms. Haven't tried that one yet though.

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  12 років тому

    I know exactly what your talking about. Time lapse sunsets can be tricky to capture. There is really no way I can think of to program the exposure to change incrementally to compensate for changes in light in manual mode. The only way I've been successful at this is to use auto mode. There might be a way to do it, but I'm not sure how. In manual mode you should get a nice natural fade to black with a fixed exposure time. But if you don't want this fade to black effect I'm stumped.

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  11 років тому

    Thanks Irwin. I have not played around with it much. I know how to shoot in RAW but I don't use it a lot since I don't have much time for processing images. Cropping could solve the problem but that's not the best way to handle it. I wish I knew more about this issue.

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  12 років тому

    @ChuckwagonCowboy cool man! I found out about it last year but never dabbled with it until I made this video. make sure you have plenty of memory on your memory card!

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  11 років тому

    I'm not sure about that. To answer your other question your camera should/can produce JPEG and RAW files at the same time. The RAW files will have an extension like .DNG and are located in a different folder in the memory card.

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  12 років тому

    When you take a picture in general there are 2 things that impact speed. The processing time of your camera and the exposure time (also known as shutter speed). Even at the fastest exposure time your camera still needs time to process what is happening. You can think of this as response time, or how quickly the camera can react to your finger pressing the shutter button. I wouldn't expect CHDK to improve the electrical or mechanical limitations of your power shot to get a DSLR response time.

    The raw picture shows the sides of the lens as its raw, very raw, its what the sensor sees before the cameras 'jpeg' routines crop out the bit that you see, there's always more sensor than 'saved image' thats why the quoted specs show a larger pixel sensor size than the output file size, your just seeing the bit the camera normally throws away

    hi Big Nate, when i use Counter.BAS i was unable to create Badpixel.bin on my Canon SX50HS
    the error says "You need to be in REC-mode for this operation"
    but i still have the same error in REC-mode, it says "badpixel.bin failed"
    what is the problem? thanks

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  12 років тому

    In the CHDK menu you will find exposure overrides. You need to enable the override and then set the time in seconds to the exposure you would like. I believe the maximum exposure is about 30 minutes.

    As they say....7th times a charm lol. Glad it finally worked. I didn't really have anything helpful to suggest. I'm currently working on a new do-it-yourself video for making a low budget USB remote shutter for CHDK enabled cameras. Can't wait to get this one uploaded! probably sometime next week.

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  12 років тому

    Yeah I have noticed similar issues. I just figured it was due to the fact that shooting in RAW puts all the processing power in your hands during the editing & post production phase. I haven't gotten into that too much. It may look grainy in the initial RAW format but I believe you should be able to adjust the parameters to your liking, much more so than a compressed (processed) jpg file. That's my understanding at least. Good question.

  • @lezbriddon
    @lezbriddon 12 років тому

    @BigNate84 I think there do have more sensor than saved image in most, its model dependent i guess, and the sx30 no doubt shows it more as they are really stretching the optics...
    one thiing i have noticed is when zoomed out, the edges of the image show very bad chromatic aborations, take a wide angle shot and have a street pole at the ver left or right, then zoom that up in windows, it will have purple edges one side and green the other...

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  11 років тому

    No you don't have to create a bad pixel bin every time. The latest stable full version of CHDK with scripts and extras is about 13MB. You can use a light version if you prefer. But with an 8GB or 16GB memory card you won't notice much of a difference.

    Good question. I have heard of a program called "chdkptp" that lets you view the same image as your LCD screen on your PC over a USB cable. It also lets you control all the camera functionality from your PC and transfer files between your PC and camera. I have never tried it out though. Might be worth a shot for you to look in to.

  • @BigNate84

    That is the only way I know how to shoot in RAW. I'm not sure what other options you have.

  • @BigNate84

    No CHDK will not void the warranty or damage the camera. As long as your not doing 60 minute exposures in the middle of the desert while shooting directly into the Sun you should be ok.

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  11 років тому

    After you enable RAW (dng) you should also have an option to tell the RAW dng files to be stored in their own folder or with the jpeg. try looking on your memory card for a new folder where the RAW files are hiding from you.

    Big nate. In comparing the like images of one jpeg to the same raw ,the jpeg image seems to be cropped when processed. So cropping the raw image works out. Also if yo take a shot at 50mm(not wide angle) it will eliminate this phenomenon as i found out. Great videos nate .Keep up the good work!!

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  12 років тому

    @lezbriddon Hey thanks for the feedback. That makes sense to have more sensor than saved image size. Out of curiosity, do professional DSLR's experience the same results shooting in RAW? By results I mean seeing the inside of the lens at the corners. I wasn't sure if this occurred because I was hacking a consumer grade camera or if the top of the line DSLR's experience the same thing and require cropping when shooting RAW. Thanks!

    I believe there is a way to do that, though I haven't experimented with it yet. Depends on how much light you have in the shot but I would try setting the shutter speed very high and playing with bracketing.

    to fix the barrel distortion, you need to create a lens correction profile for your camera. there may be one already created by someone else... I had a similar problem with my fuji f600 exr in raw and its great now i have the fuji .LCP file installed in photoshop adobe camera raw.. where there is an adjustment tab in there for lens correction..

    Hey BigNate84, thank's for your CHDK video, I installed it on my Powershot SX200 IS tonight. It took a few tries but its working. I wanted to increase my TV mode, open shutter time from 15 seconds, now it goes to 59 seconds, Eureka,"You the Man"!
    I also learned about Raw from your video selection, thanks for that. When I tried to enable the create bad pixel setting I get the error message "must be in REC mode", I'm not sure how to do that. Thanks very much Bignate84.

    Well the primary goal is to use latest and greatest small point and shoot camera to mount to a Quadcopter.
    But just reading more in depth about the video, the only improvements are increased bit-rate and record zoom. That being said, I would guess the GoPro3 Black will win this game. Back to the drawing boards.

  • @ianlake3174

    Great video, you have probably found an answer to eliminating the vignetting by now but the simplest way is not to shoot at too wide an angle. If wide angle shots are necessary then you may need to go down the path of lens profiling.

  • @MegaSasha500
    @MegaSasha500 11 років тому

    nate, i found a better way to correct my distorted image and that is to go into pse 10 filters,camera distortion and play around with the distortion slider and then the edge slider. This eliminated the vignetting at the 4 corners of the image so i really do not have to crop. Have a Good One!! Also the edge slider straighted out the bowing of the desktop accessories and the curved edge of the desk.

    I'm definitely looking forward to finding out if this is possible. I wouldn't have thought that it would be that difficult (but then, don't even ask me where to begin on how to do it).
    Tethering via USB really ought to be a whole lot easier. I have heard that Lightroom does this (I don't have it, so I don't know for sure). It also seems to me that anything Adobe can do could be done by anyone else... using open source. :)

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  12 років тому

    @xxxxxxxJIGSAWxxxxxxx Did you have any trouble installing and running CHDK? You need to be in CHDK mode. You need to create a badpixel bin and you need to select DNG formatting. Also you need to choose what folder to put the RAW files. They can be placed in their own separate folder or be placed in the same folder with the JPEG's.

    It worked perfectly, but I'm used to shooting in continuous mode and my SX700 is so slow that I can't do that in RAW. As I'm using my camera for shooting birds I think the benefits of continuous outweigh the benefits of using RAW. It's a shame because I always use RAW + jpg with my bigger cameras, but my lenses can't always get close enough for the shots I want.

    Good work Nate, do you have any videos on the video quality of the CHDK?
    I'd like to know if any of the newer cameras with CHDK have a comparable video quality to the GoPro 3 Black. That would be amazing if we can push high bit-rate video with the sharp canon lenses.

  • @BigNate84
    @BigNate84  11 років тому

    On my main channel page there is a link to the CHDK community. So you should be able to find it that way. If you're not into social media it might not be right for you. G+ is starting to become the next facebook. If you use two step verification to sign in to a google account theoretically a hacker would have to have your cell phone or be at your land line number to hack your account. It's probably safer than most social media. I'm just trying it out for now.

    Always helpful Big Nate. I wonder if you know why Canon doesn't install these relatively simple software programs on their PowerShot cameras? The camera is capable of doing all these things, why not simply install the software? Can't cost that much. Didn't cost me anything to load the software on my camera. Maybe they didn't want to increase the size of their manual.

    lol come on bignate, the edges are black because if shot in JPEG the image is cropped (means that all sides are cut) to the maximum of the sensors area.
    So the sensor can see things like they appear trough the lenses. As this is displayed with black edges, the software is set to crop it to have a nice image.
    Same with all the other effects (camera distortion), .... The RAW is unedited (!). All corrections (cropping, colors, distortion) is done afterwards by camera's firmware if shooting in JPEG.
    So to have nice pictures with RAW its your task to do that yourself!

    BigNate if i sign up on google plus how would i find the chdk community? What category would it be under. I"m not into facebook,twitter or the like so what would be the advantage of google plus other than the chdk commun. started by yourself. And how safe is it as far as being hacked. Thanks!!

    Nice work! Glad you were able to find a solution. Thanks for sharing your results. I also started a CHDK community on Google+ if you want to share your pictures and join the discussion. Have you experimented with HDR yet?

    Great videos BigNate84. I loaded CHDK on my SX50HS camera. Got all the various menus, etc. How do I make them work? Do you have a video of that process? For example a simple thing like "flashlight" is on the menu. I choose it and nothing happens. The LCD screen is supposed to light up. Doesn't. Help.
    Thanks

      You need to get familiar with the toggling CHDK mode (turning it on and off). For the flashlight feature do this. Navigate to CHDK Main Menu --> Miscellaneous Stuff --> Flashlight --> PRESS FUNC SET --> Exit the CHDK Menu --> Toggle CHDK mode to OFF --> Your camera screen will light up similar to a flashlight app on your phone.
