  • This is the complete version (Part 1) of Xu Chenggang’s series on institutional genes and China’s sysyem. The entire series spans nearly eight hours, and we will release it in three parts: upper, middle, and lower segments. Key excerpts can be revisited via the Xu Chenggang interview playlist on Dasheng.
Recently, Dasheng host Vivian Wu revisited the West Coast of the United States to interview Professor Xu Chenggang at Stanford University’s China Center for Economics and Institutions. In this conversation, he provides an in-depth analysis of institutional genes as a preface to the forthcoming Chinese edition of his new book, Institutional Genes: The Origins of China’s Institutions and Totalitarianism.
The interview also explores the reasons why the communist totalitarian system took root and flourished in China, using more examples to answer and delve into key concepts. Professor Xu also addresses questions raised by Dasheng viewers regarding the Institutional Genes video series.
