The reason Freddy looks different in Wes Craven's New Nightmare is because it's not technically Freddy...It's a demon that has manifested and embodied itself in the persona of the Freddy character. That's why he's not burned and his claws are part of his hand, not on a man made glove.
Millers make-up for the win. First Freddy was the best - but with that said, remember Freddy is a nightmare - a dream - a ghost - a phantom - it really doesn't matter if he looks overly real or bizarre in appearance, just needs to be scary!
Hands down, part 2 is my favorite. The sunken in eyes and the skull like face structure is how I've always pictured Freddy. But I also love the original. It's not as "stylized," but it creepy in its simplicity. The wounds are fresh and there are pieces of skin hanging off of his face. Good stuff! New Nightmare looks good when it's wet and covered in darkness, but when he's in the underworld realm and the makeup is dry,it doesn't look great.
If that Freddy Vs Jason video is coming soon, you should check out the book "Slash Of The Titans". It goes over every script and treatment over the 10 years the movie was being developed.
I have to speak in defence of the part 5 makeup as I think it's one of the best! To me, It's clear David miller took some design cues from Kevin Yagher’s work by blending the "witchy" features of part 2 and 4 with his original vision of Freddy from part 1. Dream Child Freddy has the gaping "pepperoni pizza" wounds from part 1 with the prominent brow and hooked nose from 2 and 4. There are some shots in the film where the makeup looks great. For example: In Freddy's resurrection scene when Amanda krueger appears and he hisses at her. Ultimately, the makeup in this film was let down by the overexposed lighting- and dare I say it, Robert Englunds excessively campy performance. Would love to know what you think of this take, Chris. Great video and please keep up the Freddy content!
Yeah say what u want about the reboot but the actual work on the mask was great. If you’re just judging it off sculpting, paint, and final result… I think it’s much higher ranked. When you start brining in your feelings on the movie I could see it changing the ranking tho.
Part 5 makeup was just Ill-conceived in general, cool idea I guess it feels like the decision to make Freddy look older was more of this idea that “well he’s been around for a while now” it doesn’t even make sense because he’s dead and more importantly it made him less Scary which the franchise didn’t need at that time
Solid list, I'd have to agree with a lot of it. Part 1 would never be my mental image but it's so distinct with things like the depth to it, the shredded ear and it was lit and shot so well. Part 2 is by far my favourite, never heard the witch comparison until now and that 100% nails it. For me part 3 and 4 border on identical, 3 definitely felt like it was better shot to me, I just feel that what they lacked was darkness around the eyes and maybe some contacts to make the eyes less human, that I feel would've gone a long way to make him scarier, same goes for his regular FvJ makeup but like you said, those films weren't really trying to make him that scary. I love the idea of Freddy's design in part 5, the movie as a whole I wish leaned more into the idea that Freddy lost the souls that gave him power in the prior films so he would be weaker and would probably in turn look weaker, maybe concealing himself in the shadows again only this time it was so he wouldn't be seen as weak at the risk of his victims not being afraid of him. For what it is at times I think the makeup is shot well, but overall it doesn't quite work. Demon Freddy in FvJ is an awesome look and I love how unique his New Nightmare design was, but elements of the execution don't entirely work for me. I feel like New Nightmare could've used more contrast with the split skin look for the makeup, the red flesh parts underneath would've been much better with a bit of a glossier, Hellraiser type look, as is they just look very rubbery to me. Maybe there's a way that and the FvJ demon design could be merged, like the shredded skin is barely holding back not simply red flesh but actually a more demonic façade, that'd be fun. The other designs don't do much for me. For future designs I'd love for them to draw upon part 2 again, but maybe even lean more into the original poster. I always thought a design where Freddy is missing an eyelid or maybe even both of them could be creepy, emoting for the actor would be tricky but I always figured since he's a dream demon why would he need eyelids, it's not like he's ever sleeping. That and also as weird as this sounds, I always thought the sweater being partially merged to his body could be interesting, like in a surreal dream-like way it's been burned into him.
Hey Chris I just wanted to let you know that I was saving up my money just to by that p5 glove of yours on etsy and right when I was about to finally purchase it it had already been snagged!!!!!!😢
Nothing beats demonic Freddy from Freddy Vs Jason. One look I do think would be cool to try though is a black, charred look, where it's like a black, charred, almost skeletal look. I think that would be a cool thing to try out.
I think Jackie is underrated as Freddy. I feel he deserves a second chance at the role. While the movie itself wasn't the best, he did a great job, he was terrifying.
Yeah, I thought he had potential in the role, he just wasn’t in a particularly good film. They couldn’t decide if they wanted to do their own thing or just ape iconic shots from the original, so it’s this muddled middling result.
Kevin Yeager's Freddy make-up from part 2 will always be the scariest to me and the best. David Miller's make-up from part 5 is my least favorite.. after that turd of a remake of course.
When I picture Freddy, it's definitely Part 3, Dream Master Freddy. That's definitely the most iconic look. But my favorite overall, mostly for scare-factor is Part 2 Freddy. Our boy looks INTENSE in that film.
Just read another interview with heather. She's doing alot. Saying Robert could easily play freddy again. (Its getting close) i can taste it. I know it
The OG NOES is my all time favourite horror movie and always will be, so that make up gets an automatic 'top tier' ranking for me - I just love how pissed off he looks, and cruel, and monstrous and just 'wrong' - like something like him shouldn't exist in our world. I also do like how creepy the pt 2 make up looks too though. Pretty much agree with your rankings here, I think I would personally put pt 3 in 'decently charred'. I've never seen that FvJ test make up before, that looked amazing!

Fantastic job on the tier list. If I had to make a headcanon version of Freddy Krueger, it would be a blend between the remake, Freddy vs Jason, and Nightmare 2. Keep the realistic burn victim quality, but add the tight to the skull skin with sunken red eyes and juicy sores. It has to be mobile enough for the actor to emote through the make-up.
I think A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 is the worst film of the series but yet it has the best makeup IMO (When I bought a Freddy Figure I made sure it was the design from part 2)
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout wow man I’m kinda a dork but super cool to get a reply from you. Love your videos and along with you and Cody leach are my go to for rankings even if the videos are 3 years old. Gets me through my rides to work🤙🏽🤙🏽
For me, my first thought was, both the New Nightmare and the remake make up belonged in the bottom. But that's just my opinion. I was surprised when you ranked them higher. I actually liked Jackie Earle Haley's voice. If he had been in a more traditional Freddy make up, I would have been much more forgiving of the movie. Every time I saw that make up, it was like a dissonant chord in a song and it took me out of the movie. Basically, my brain was telling me: " That's not Freddy."
The reboot makeup isn't even realistic. It's supposed to be realistic but they made a very simple mistake. They based the look on burn victims irl. Burn victims who actually survived and had time to heal as much as possible following their accidents. Freddy was burnt to death. His burns would be much more severe and wouldn't have healed at all. The reboot makeup is actually the second least similar to people who died in the same way as Freddy irl (the least similar being New Nightmare). They intended to make it the most realistic and ended up doing the opposite lol.
