    Dude. You saved me the cost of a new switch. Good job. And I loved how you explained why the x terminal is on the switch. Never would have figured that out.

      Glad to help! It’s easy enough once you know how they work.

      We don't rebuild the motors in house so we probably won't get around to that one anytime soon, sorry!

    When does the x terminal get power?

    • @Sam_Mebane

      ua-cam.com/video/Oq8j6BrLVMI/v-deo.html - the switch receives power from the ignition switch

    My 70 bug has the 8 pin switch and I received the newer version with “x” prong I get no headlights. I know I can jump #30 to it but is there a way I can do it differently to get headlights to turn on so they go off with the key off? Also, is it normal for the #30 prongs to be getting 12v constantly even when the key is off? Because my old switch allows you to turn the headlights on without the key

      Original style 68-70 headlight switches have not been available for quite some time for some reason so the industry has had to deal with adapting the 71-77 switches which have the X terminal. We typically jump power from the 30 terminal (which is battery power, so yes it should always have power) to the X terminal so the switch operates like all VW headlight switches made prior to 1971. The headlight switch was completely independent of the ignition switch, up through 1970.
      With the use of a relay, it would be possible to get the ignition switch to turn on and off power to the X terminal, yes. The relay would need a ground, battery power, a wire from the ignition power, and then a wire to the X terminal.

    X terminal will not trigger and continuity does that mean my switch is no good

    • @Sam_Mebane
      @Sam_Mebane 9 місяців тому +1

      The X terminal is an input connection, not an output. It powers the 56 terminal, and the 2 will only have continuity when the knob is pulled all the way out.

    why 30 terminal has 2 pole or incoming ?

    • @Sam_Mebane

      The headlight switch, depending on the model, is a distribution point for the main battery power. On some models, power comes from the battery, to the headlight switch, and has terminals to send power to the fuse box and to the ignition switch.
