- Thanks for watching this 'Old vs New Tubes' comparison video!
Some notes:
To hear the Rectifier in a full band context with the new JJ tubes wait for the Dual Rectifier vs Mini Rectifier video which will be on here soon.
I was able to dial in the amp with the new JJ tubes a little bit brighter so that they would sit in the mix perfectly.
I did not have new Rectifier tubes available so I left those 2 from the original set in there.
The signal chain:
-ESP LTD EC1000T with an EMG 57/66 set.
-Fractal Audio Axe Fx III (for recording DI's and cab simulation)
-Dual Rectifier
-Fractal Audio LB-2 Loadbox
-Axe Fx III (load with OwnHammer 412 ZLCS V30 MMMC IR's)
-Cubase 10 pro

Thanks!
That riff is so freakin good
I personally prefer the Mesa tubes. It seems they have more definition.
Great video 👍
On the Clean, more noticeable noise on the JJs, but John mentioned he bumps up the treble.
Modern = I prefer OLD tubes
Crunch = New tubes !
Clean = I don't know lol
I like the Mesa tubes more
Loving the amount of videos you've been putting out
Very nice and informative as usual Jon! You are the tone lord!
Cheers!
Bunn
Bredrin!
A great and informative video as always. Cheers to you man!
Cool riff, love your videos!
JJ tubes - a lot more low end and less high end (above 6k)
Mesa tubes - a lot more balanced tone overall IMHO.
Dunno why, but I prefer the sound of old tubes in this video (in general).
Might be that you are are already used to setting up nice balanced tone on old tubes setup, and now it's a bit harder to translate the tone. Or that JJ tubes needs a bit more play time to settle ...
On the other hand, I agree with your statement, that new tubes sit better in mix due to mid range bump, which I agree absolutely. And that's in the end what matters I think. :)
In my own experience JJ's lack treble....which isn't a bad thing depending on what you are going for.
Sounds great, Bruv.
Great comparison.
Subtle difference mate!
I still keep the old ones but undoubtedly I will try the swap!!
Dude those riffs!!!
much bigger difference than i thought it would be!
I really like the huge bass Mesa Boogie tubes have. I tube rolled with like every brand of 12ax7 tubes and the Boogie had the most bass out of all of them. Also a nice fluid sound. Amperex sounded the most hifi, with more detail than the rest of the tubes. JJ and Electro Harmonix and Groove Tubes all sound about the same, with warmth and a good amount of detail.
Dude are those your own riffs? They sound freaking sweet! The video is great too! Do you think you could make a rectifier comparison, diode vs vacuum?
Put a tung sol in the V1 slot and mesas in the remaining 🤘🏻
Just what I was looking for. ;)
THANK YOU
You should do a side by side comparison with a full retube kit from Eurotubes or Doug's tubes. Vs the stock Mesa labeled tubes.
thanks, man
The mesa branded str 445s are JJ 6l6s.
Edit: only stock on the more recent lines
Definitely prefer the jjs on the gain channels
like the video. ive heard that the amp may need to be adjusted to accommodate different power tubes. ???
thanks
old for modern, new for crunch and clean both are similar
God I love the sound of a Rectifier
Would be a little more interesting if the mesa tubes were also new
Both tubes sound good. They just sound different.
wooww,,the new sound more compact,,and cleaner,,more bite,,,nice
A lot of Mesa preamp tubes are JJ anyway. I replaced the Mesa tubes in my Mark V and then I found out the stock tubes are JJ already.
Worried I wasted money but now I have lots of spare tubes.
try jj el34 v2 in your rectifier and this will blow your mind no joke
check out this power tube swap: ua-cam.com/video/9d4kbgAjfkE/v-deo.html
Next time you retube you should test some of the eurotube retube kits, would be rad to hear a comparison with the KT88/kt66 or kt77/6v6 set with a long plate preamp tube. That would be a rad video
I have a Dual Recto Roadster combo, I will try this settings with mine to see how close can I be, what IR you use? because the Mesa is BIAS fixed you supposed to use Mesa Tubes, I know Mesa set the Bias for a Cold tube, are you worries to damage the Recto using a JJ tube? How do you know is running good?
Mesa tubes for modern and clean!
DId you need to re-bias the Mesa after changing to JJ's?
It's funny when people find out Mesa tubes are JJ tubes just re-stamped they come from the same manufacturer.
Nice man, keep strong!.. any name or video with the outro song?? thx!

Sounds like you removed a blanket from the cab with the new tubes. The old ones just had a woofiness about it where the new ones were bright and clear but not shrill.
Cool stuff man, cheers!
Mesa Tubes are JJ tubes.. they even list the country of manufacture as Slovakia.. There are only 3 facilities that currently manufacture tubes.
Mesa tubes can be many brands, the current 6l6 STR 440 are Chinese.
Hey john. Could you send me a link or let me know where I can get those shelves?
Home depot, Lowes
bonjour, avez-vous fait un réglage de bias après installation des lampes jj ? ou n'y a t'il rien de spécial a faire ? merci
Did you have to rebias the amp?
it sounds like the bias is hotter with JJs.
hey what jj tubes did you use. have you ever jjs in the preamp? and if so which ones? any issues?
Ok, so this is a test of old Messa tubes and new JJ tubes? So the tubes aren't the same brand and model?
Old tubes = mushy sound
New tubes= better definition.
I don't like Mesa tubes either. My favorite in my dual Rectifier are EHX or Tung Sol 12ax7's. They seem to have more bite than Jj
Can I put any Brand of tubes on my Mesa triple without any problem?
I really prefer the sound of the new tubes (after you adjusted the settings) and it's not just by a little bit. Do you know how old the mesa tubes were?
No idea...
@@SonicDriveStudio bought a used XXX a couple years back and after a tube change it was a completely different amp. No idea if the preowner ever changed the tubes at all :D
Both sound pretty much the same to me. I guess you have to use headphones
those aren't older tubes in the mesa. I run 1970's and 1980's Sylvania's in my boogies and they are the most articulate warm and toneful tubes there are, I've never heard a jj tube Ive liked.
The old ones are much much better for me.
Wow... way worse in my opinion. Thanks for the demo!
Hey Dude, new here but, having a mesa brought me here. Ever tried a pair of EL's ? Would love to hear your honest oppinion on that. Use Mesa's EL's. THe video they made showing off diffences between 6L6 and the EL's were really enourmous. Cheers
My ears hear more shimmer from the "old" tubes. I choose old....
This is a classic example of why you need to stick with Mesa brand tubes
I prefer the new ones. The tubes work harder with distortion so that's why clean channel is hard to tell. I think it's similar to a race car with with new tires put on. Everything just sounded a bit "tighter", and especially when driven harder.
Turn your presence off the red channel. 😑
Dude the JJs sound worse and less definition in both situations
JJ tubes/valves are UTTER CRAP. I've been gigging tube amps for almost 30 years. I've used JJ 6l6, el34, e34l, kt77, kt88 in lots of different amps, laney, marshall, fender etc. and every set I've had has failed way before they should have. There is no way that any set has ever come close to lasting 6 months of doing a couple of gigs a week and some a laughably short time. I don't bias hot, maybe 55-60%. I've got a set of svetalana el34's in a Marshall and Svetlana 6l6s in a twin which are still great after 15 years.
Did you just shit on your Dual Rectifier vs plugins video
No wonder the sims were darker just like your new tubes
Your old tubes have a sizzle so to speak
