- Welcome back for another Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire video. In this video, I will be talking about George R.R. Martin's new NotABlog update. According to George R.R. Martin, HBO is preparing to film their new Game of Thrones prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This new series will chronicle the life and adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon "Egg" Targaryen. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be based on George R.R. Martin's three Dunk & Egg novellas, The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and the Mystery Knight. As of right now, this story doesn't have an ending. George said he needs to write roughly 7-12 more novellas before this story is finished. This is a major issue because HBO has already started making A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, before George has written it's ending. He said he will not start writing anymore Dunk & Egg novellas until he's finished the Winds of Winter. This might not happen anytime soon, considering he's been writing the Winds of Winter for over a decade. This might be Game of Thrones all over again. A Knight of the Seven Kingdom's writers might catch up to George before he's ready to start writing more novellas. What will they do if that happens? Will he delay the Winds of Winter even longer, or will he allow the show's writers to create his ending again?

I hope his heirs follow Robert Jordan's widow's example and find another Brandon Sanderson to finish the series, but it's unlikely to turn out as well as Wheel of Time. When he realized he was likely to died of an altra-rare blood disease before he could finish it, Jordan reportedly started mapping out the rest of the series, prepared a slew of notes, and wrote key scenes, including the final chapter of the series. He did all of that while actively dying.
I seriously doubt GRRM will do the same for ASOIAF because that would require he have a clue where the series is going and how it ends. Hopefully he has enough of his world building documented that someone can step in and at least create a plausible ending, even if it isn't GRRM's ending.

i do think well get winds..at some point in the nezt 5 years crazy as that sounds but ADOS nah thats dead af at least TWOW is about 70% done he could honestly rush the rest and push it out if it REALLY came down to it
George seems to think he's gonna live forever.
He‘s probably very aware of not living forever and plans to die before people realize that he has no idea how to finish the story.
What do you want him to say? That he'll stop writing and make plans because he's old? His story is very complicated and I'm sure he's frustrated about it himself, it is what it is. I'm grateful for what he's already given us.

You guys don't understand his brilliance. George knows he is going to die. You are the ones who don't know. Don't know that he is waiting to die and be reanimated as a wight in order to finish the book. Just imagine it, the invasion of the dead in our own world also ushers in the armies of the dead in ASOIAF. This is one of the most stunning meta-narratives in the history of fiction, but you all lack the imagination and patience to appreciate what George is doing.
By the time the last novel " a dream of spring" comes out, Prince William's son, George will become king of Britain and the Commonwealth.

I started reading A Song of Fire and Ice in 1996. I refuse to buy any more of his books until he finishes this series.

If he even finishes which I highly doubt, we’ll be lucky to get Winds of Winter at this point considering it’s been over a decade since the previous book was released.

You can bet that if the Dunk and Egg TV series is a hit George will quickly shift his focus on writing more in that series. It's clear the last thing he wants to do is finish the original series.
In fact it wouldn't surprise me if he has the next Dunk and Egg novella already written.

George's first love has always been tv script writing. They always told him he wrote too big. I think if Dunk n Egg takes off, he definitely will write it. Dunk n Egg is his favorite child ❤.
So I could see this happening too.
Back then, when I was a devout member of the German ASoIaF-community and we were in London to see George (I think it was 2012?), he talked about writing Dunk and Egg up to the North to Winterfell and the two of them being in Dorne. I believe he skipped Dorne but Winterfell and the Starks could still be a possibility.
I also think that since GOT is finished, he kind of is done with the story of 'asoiaf'.
he may be thinking that writing the last book will be the end of the world he created. in a way, he'd be killing his child so he's putting off as long as possible.
Someone give George a clout in the ear to keep him focused on Winds of Winter.
I doubt he'll ever finish any of the books at this point.

Winds of winter isn’t coming thats just a fact but I don’t think he’ll even be able to get any dunk and egg novellas out in time for that show either. He’s literally going to do it again, let another show get ahead of his books. He really doesn’t learn his lesson at all. The man is insane.

Duncan and Egg are really good reads. Winds is never coming out from George. Perhaps after he dies someone will edit what he has written and publish it.
He's mentioned that he has plans in place for all his works to be destroyed after his death because he doesn't want anyone else finishing HIS works.
Compared to Brandon Sanderson, he's lazy, selfish and petty.

For a guy who wrote stories that he never intended to have translated into tv, he sure is writing a lot of stuff for tv. Just finish the story we’re all really invested in, please and thank you.

At this point, I need him to hire writers to finish The Winds of Winter. His involvement in the creative process and writing of the adaptated series is slowing him down and it’s not like he is super young either. 🙁

He’s said many times he pinned himself into a corner with how to end game of thrones that he truly doesn’t know what to write to tie it the ending. The fact that he was doing side story writing is because he has writers block on the main story. He’s old fat and rich who hasn’t finished writing the next book over the last 15 or whatever years. He’s never finishing it let’s just accept it.

The Dunk and Egg series would be perfect to engage with a writing partner. I get not wanting to do that with ASOIAF but for that more episodic and adventurous series getting a talented cowriter would be perfect
Just imagine how nicely things would've fallen into place if he could just finish writing in time.

I genuinely think he doesn't know HOW to finish a song of ice and fire and I think it's because he's created to many plotlines and instead of closing them his mind just keeps making more. I once read somewhere that a dream of spring could actually end up being 2 books. He's right when he says he's like a gardener, he's a gardener with an infinite amount of land that he keeps expanding into instead of fencing it and being like now I have to actually tend to the garden that I've already created. I definitely think that both the show and book fan's strong reaction to the ending of GOT also has something to do with him being unable to conclude his story because amongst all those lies there were some specks of truth spinkled in (e.g. Bran becomes king). Also hink him waiting this long has added to the pressure because how much fans expect - the fact that there are fan theories that have resulted in people making videos spanning 20+ hours tells you that much. So in conclusion, what's keeping him from finishing the books? 1. wanting to expand the plot when now is the time to bring it all together 2. too much ground to cover in terms of addressing and concluding already existing plotlines 3. increased expectation/ hype from the fandom on the actual ending of the books from having to wait 10+ years leading to added pressure. I think Winds of Winter is his big hurdle, if he's able to actually finish it and put it out there (and people like it) then I think he will be able to write spring faster. As a procrastinator myself, there's a sort of guilt that comes from delaying the work you knew had to be finished already which then results in you procrastinating even more.
Completely agree. People forget that GRRM himself said when he writes, he doesn’t do an ending because it makes him lose interest and creative flow because he ends up restricting his creative process to the point that he stops writing.
He gave GOT his ending and now has backed himself into a corner as he saw the backlash and can’t change it without causing contractual issues with HBO as he has promised that the book ending will be the same as the show.
I suspect he is dragging his feet because he hopes the vitriol will die down by the time his last book comes out and he can figure out how to tweak things to make the ending more palatable.

I didn’t read all of this but I read enough. I’ve never even read the books and know that this guy has written himself into a maze he cannot solve or written himself into a corner in dark room that he cannot escape.

I’ve already accepted the fact that he’s old rich and fat who hasn’t finished writing the winds of winter even after 15 or whatever years. I have accepted that he will never finish it even if he lives another 25 years.
I've tried reading every other GRR story besides Thrones. Including Sworn Sword and the rest of them. Some are fair, some are awful, none of them are in the same class as Thrones by a long shot. Everything he's written besides song of ice and fire is pure mediocrity. When you develop them into a TV show, the TV show is pure mediocrity. HOT D was a fair effort but who literally GAF about Targaryens? Their story is not interesting, except for the dragons, it's completely forgettable.

Dunk and Egg have the luxary of being able to jump around in time. It starts when Egg is a child and ends with him a man grown. Maybe George doesn't "finish" Dunk and Egg. But we can at least tell the writers what happened at Summerhall if they want to end if that way.
Also they have the world book to help guide them.
@@kjellduteweert9262 exactly. It would be all that different from how house of the dragon is being developed. They have the broad strokes, they would just need to fill in the details. Also, they could just end the show after 2 or 3 seasons. They don't have to move past the written material.
Tbf he did say he knew what he would write the next DandE novel about and it was supposed to be based at winterfell. He's even dropped some hints in brans visions. So I think he'll write it pretty quickly but there's probably some hints about the main storyline in the novellas

Nah, because George will actually write it well with proper build up if his ending is the same. But I'm certain Georges ending isn't identical, because D&D made up Arya killing the Night King etc.
Even with the same ending, he would know how to execute it. I don’t think he envisioned Arya killing the NK, nor Jaime and Cersei dying together happily? I do think he probably had Bran as the King, which many people hated as well. But with Bran, I think it’s more about how poorly he was written in the last 2 seasons. I don’t mind him being King if it’s done right.

We know of at least 2 novellas that exist in some form:
The Village Hero which is likely to be about events of Pennytree & how it became a royal fief. It exists on the border of Stone Hedge & Raventree hall lands for context (Bracken & Blackwood disputed area).
The other is The She Wolves of Winterfell - a working title but dealing with a succession crisis in the North when multiple Stark lords have died in rapid succession.
George has started a 4th novela Shewolves of Winterfell.
As much as I love HOTD I wished they had started with Aegon and his sisters.

Martin should reach out to Brandon Sanderson, LOL. Pay Sanderson big bucks to finish one of these two projects. Sanderson could pump one out in record time.
With Sanderson we would have had dreams of spring and a trilogy of Roberts rebellion, already.

Its getting so absurd my mind went full circle and I am just hopefully imagining everyone eating their hats when winds of winter unexpectedly hits the shelves :-D
Seems like George needs a long vacation at Cauldron Lake to get over his writers block.
Not to mention that there are no dragons or direwolves in the Dunk and Egg series, mostly about medieval knights, no magic, which means the show is significantly cheaper to make and was therefore chosen over other stories, like the GOT sequel for instance they cancelled.
I have to say. I have come to accept he will never write anything again.

I do think we will get Winds of Winter within the next year or two but feeling more and more like Dreams of Spring is something that will never come out or someone else will have to write it. Also I have a feeling that fan reception to Winds of Winter will be very mixed even if it is a good book, as the expectations are just through the roof at this point. (probably part of the reason he's taking so long).
Sometimes when you're working on something and get into a rut, working on something else for a while helps you when you go back to the first project. Maybe he should work on some Dunk and Egg novellas to give his mind a break from Winds of Winter and when he goes back he might see the path he needs to take.

It’s funny to think that we are talking like the TWOW is the end of TSOIAF story… there is still one more book slated, ADOS… that book will never ever see George’s hand.

I’m currently on a Storm of Swords and I’m excited to “finish” the books, however it weighs on me that there may not be a prize at the end and Gurm may never finish. Sad.
He is 75 years old..... if we are lucky we will get the winds of winter.. at the most.....but i doubt he'll be able to write the final book if we consider how long anything is taking him.
Perhaps he needs a co-writer? Or someone to help him keep track of the many storylines that are happening? I can imagine that it must get very complex at some point.
In his mind, he knows how asoiaf ends and what happens to the people in the story. I would be happy even if he would finish the story 'sloppy' and shorten it, as in cut some pov's.

I think Winds of Winter & beyond will be great reads - I've always loved Brandon Sanderson's style and am curious what he will do with the material.
HBO needs to eff off with the speed running of the content. There's no reason for why they kept cutting down episode length and coverage. More and more each season.
For real , I don't wanna The Winds of Winter be released anymore. I'm waiting for sooo many years that I forgot pretty much a lot from the books. If he releases , I will need go back and read all over again to remember. I dunno if I want to do it.

The best, and most GRRM thing, that could happen is that he’s already written WoW and ADoS and they’ll be published posthumously to avoid any backlash, because they diverge significantly from the TV show.
He wants to build a world like Tolkien did but with less wrinkles ..it's not ez to maintain a true lure that is over a few centuries
Perhaps his books 6 and 7 are nearly along the line as the series ending. And GRRM saw how people hated hated that. I hope I'm wrong and some days we'd have the complete series, whether by George or another author.
I don't think that we are going to see anything new until after his death and his estate has a chance to heavily edit the mountains of Westeros expansion that he's been writing for fifteen years. If he forbids his estate to do such, and wants all unfinished work destroyed, then this will be it. I don't know what happened to him, but at least he gave us the world of GoT and all that it holds. I hope that it can be allowed to flourish in future works, but I don't know.

So Happy that they gonna make Dunk & Egg, as a reader who haven't seen Game of Thrones only House of the Dragon, when they anounce the second season I asked myself; do I really want to go through this pain? Nah man, The Dance of the Dragons is a crazy hurting story that gets bad to worst. Dunk & Egg is a beautiful and chill story, yeah it has violence, injustice, tragedy and more, but it's a hero's journey... with a fiery ending, but again, it's a beautiful story. I wish to live to se the romance of Jenny of Oldstones and Duncan, man, that love is what I want to see. My life is ugly, dramatic and sad enough as The Dance, I can stand the reading but to see that horrible tragedy for fun on the TV? Nah, I'm self destructive, but not that much.
HBO should have just done the spin off of jon Snow..
HBO never wanted to do something like this! Why would they? What to see, Jon Snow hunting? There is so much material in the A Song of Ice and Fire universe! Why waste time inventing hunting stories when you can adapt from what is already written?

At least with the jon snow story, it would be straightforward without worrying about an ending. Let's face it. The writer is 75 years old yeah he a great writer, but he slowed down as he aged. At least with the jon snow series, it would have been something to redeem the end of the Game of Thrones series.

We might get Winds plus one or two Dunk & Egg stories (if we're lucky) but Dream of Spring is never gonna happen unfortunately.
If any of you have ever written a novel, it’s hard work. The hardest part is getting started.
Not sure where you're getting stuff after the 3rd novella has to be made up. Like HOTD, we already know the outline of Dunk and Egg's life. They will visit Winterfell and meet old nan. They visit the Bracken/ Blackwood where Egg will meet Beth Blackwood, his future queen. It goes all the way to the tragedy at Summerhall, where Egg dies.
This is the third show that is going to get ahead of the books. Don't forget House of the Dragon, in addition to Game of Thrones and Dunk and Egg. We should learn from history.

His publisher and HBO never forced a ghost writer upon him. Considering that millions are at stake, that baffles me.
He literally said after he finishes The Winds of Winter... so how is it doomed? And they could very well have screenwriters finish the Novellas, they're not exactly A Song Of Ice and Fire so it could never be botched on the level D&D did GoT.
